To anyone reading this, I have a tip. I am a goalie and I'd like to throw in my 2 cents upon the matter. The shooting for the ears tactic is all fine and dandy but for a goalie my size ( about 6 foot ) , the only way for that to even come close to working is if they're down in the butterfly. If a goalie is standing up and they have the ability to predict the shot then they will most likely be standing, if you're too close to get it over the goalie's shoulders then of course you'd want to go fivehole or just over the pad. So as a summary, Close up=Above pad or fivehole, Far enough back and the goalie is already down ( shot off of a rebound and good opportunity ) make sure to take advantage of that and take his tips to " aim for the ears " if you will. I hope this helps you and remember, if you can get a pass for an assist and your teammate score then that is just as good as if you score the goal, your team comes first and goals aren't everything. Have a nice day.
that was my thought reading the whole thing, but i also just gave some tips up above, in the end, you probably will never play with anyone seeing these tips, and most the people you play with wont ever get into the comments... why not help out the next generation, both players at shooting and goalies at blocking those shots
A few psychological tips, and personal bonus things to share. 1. First shot you take, pop it right to his ear. If it doesn't go in, you either hit him/her in the head and rattle them, or it goes over the net. If you hit em hard enough, it's cruel, but it makes them second guess the next shot. 2. Only works on your first shot: Score high glove on your first shot, and you're in the goalie's head. He'll second guess the ability of his glove and think about it next time you shoot. You should be able to go high glove on him all day. If he robs you though, stop shooting high glove. 3. Use the backhand! Goalies hate backhand shots because they're hard to read. 4. Don't forget shot fakes. Just a kick of the leg and a dip of the shoulder are enough to get a goalie in the butterfly, usually. High enough out, and you don't have to guess where the pads are going to sit. Additionally, those shoulder spots open up on high.
some good info here, some thats probably overstated, as a goalie of 11 years, and now still an off and on goaltender ive never once been phased by a helmet or cage shot, helmets are made well and leave you with little to be scared of. i am also with bloxhead, every time i got beat high up (didnt happen often, played 10 years of baseball as a second basemen and catcher as well, i had a good glove...) it only made me work harder at stopping the next one, i never doubted my glove, only my positioning and reflexes which made me work harder. i have talked with many goalies, and ive never heard one say they got down on themselves because a guy beat the, top shelf... that brings me to my next point, if anything, slipping it under our pads make us a THOUSAND times angrier... it always made me so mad to get beat under the pad, pads now days make it so easy to defend the ice, there was rarely an excuse to let one in that was on the ice. as for backhand, you are right on the money, all we can do for those is to make ourselves big and hope to block a badly placed backhand. if you are a righty, shooting on a lefty goalie or a lefty shooting on a full right goalie and can shoot backhand well, accurately, you will dominate that side. purely due to reading the puck as stated... number 4 you are pretty spot on, though i would say you better make it pretty convincing, as you play more, you tend to see fakes a lot, most of them the player decides at the last moment to do and its highly readable as they arent prepeared to really take the shot. but if you practice your fakes and go in knowing how to do them and make them look natural, you will pull the goalie into a butterfly a lot, which gives you that spot he talks about in this video, over the pad, under the glove, rarely do you see goalies that can keep their glove on their pad for long enough to beat an odd lower than expected shot off the ice... you arent far off, just giving my $.02 from the perspective of a goalie who has taken some shots to the mask and played a few games... haha, thanks for your comment, some great discussion points.
I have always done this, it's like all-day five-hole because once you smack the shit out of their helmet and bend their cage, they will be very reluctant to drop down.
Great point, I was keeping it simple in this video (walk before you run). For the younger players there are a lot of openings, but you are right, once things get more competitive the goalies do not give you much to shoot at. Having the information in this video will help build the foundation for goal scoring (looking for places to shoot, knowing where to shoot, thinking of goalies weaknesses, etc) I will do a more advanced video about making the goalie move soon.
Hey, when you're on a breakaway, take a page out of Jussi Jokinen's book: advance on the goalie at a slight angle, stick handle the puck directly in front of your body, then at the last moment, pull the puck all the way to your forehand and snap it just over the goalie's leg pad. I'm going to try to do that more often.
loll "more often". Like clean cut breakaways happen that often. jussi himself rarely gets one. only in a shootout will you get that much time to execute and think.
Andrew Persaud dude, I'm talking about when you get that opportunity, it doesn't matter how rare it is. I'm just saying that you don't need to do anything fancy, you just need to be quick.
I have 5 goals and 1 assist in 13 games playing for the "Tokyo Fighting Salmon" in my university's recreation league... I'm really dusting it up. I scored twice in one period in one of those games, so really, if you remove that period, I have 3 goals and 1 assist in almost 13 games. Good lord.
third reason for not shooting top corner all the time is the puck rounds the boards creating a potential breakout for the OTHER team, as in old dogs hockey no one is backchecking. They are in great position to have a mismatched breakaway the other way. Can't count how many times I've seen this happen.
Low shots are also hit the net faster as they don't have to rise as much. Look at Kessel, especially if youre a leafs fan, and how he doesn't go bar down on all his shots. Plus if there's traffic, you can take advantage of it with low shots.
I've got an article for the role of a winger and the role of a centermen. There is a lot of information to cover when it comes to positioning so I thought a detailed article with a lot of pictures would be a good way to cover it.
I always go for the above the shoulder because a person first thought is move your head out of the way so they flinch which slows there reaction time down a bit . Have good accuracy nail it there you will score everytime I promise you . I am a goalie too and if he's good with his glove go to the blocker side . High blocker or low blocker .if he's good with both well deke him or go just over the pad or shoulder .
In my league it seems like 5 hole is the way to go. Most of our goalies don't have the flexibility to close that hole. But in adult hockey we aren't the young guys we used to be. I love your videos. I haven't been playing for long, but I'm addicted! Your videos are great for beginners, keep em up.
When taking a shot I usually get in close and fake five-hole. Then 'll push the puck out to the side of my body and shoot it wide once they go down to close the gap. That usually works pretty well.
Could you do a video on good ways to warm up for a Hockey game like what to eat what stretches to do. Or is that unnecessary and will it not affect my game.
Kieva Storm As a righty myself I do find that I can go low blocker fairly often but the lefties have a bit better of an angle than we do. Being a righty is definitely better for going over the goalies left shoulder and bar down though. Lower percentage for sure but it feels damn good!
yea as goalie myself the shot just above the pad..was the one i hated the most or when a player is coming from the wing than cuts across the slot n goes far side
Blocker high and 5 hole are my most successful shots. Sometimes straight at the head if I'm playing an inexperienced goalie. I play goalie when I'm not a forward too, so I basically play my own weaker spots.
18 inches off the ice short side. works everytime with a quick release and not the typical corner shooters aim for. and even if you catch the pads its usually a huge rebound.
3:53 another way to stop that is to direct your head into it. I've done it once, and all i can say is that its one of the hardest things to do. I goes against all instincts and reactions.
I usually go deke on breakaways but for shots just sling it right through the 5 hole im a peewee so i can usually toe drag past defensemen then fake shot to one side get the goalie down over to that side pull the puck back move to the other side and put it in. I dont know how well this will work next year when im a bantom
As a goalie, most of this is true haha. Hardest spot to stop in my opinion is in between the arm blocker side. Goalies have a tendency to almost twist and grab with their arm to stop it instead of just keeping the blocker out in front and knock it away. I think that is another one of those instinct moves and it leads to a goal. Not always true, but watching the NHL and playing, I see it quite a bit.
really nice vid! Can you make a vid on how to stretch properly on the ice because i always feel tight in the skating motion and i do stretch before the game and a bit during warm ups and they don't seem to work so that would be great if you would!
once when i versed a 14 year old in hockey and i was only 8 he shot it in the pads and he shot it again when i was on the ground i put my glove out and i SAVED IT.
Hi Jeremy, great video. I'd like to know something. See I'm a lefty and I'm playing left wing. I hate it but my coach is taking the decisions so.... When I'm coming on the left wing where is the best place to shoot ? Since I'm playing left wing, I always end up shooting in the goalie's chest! I'm really frustrated since I don't score anymore. A winger is a winger I should be able to play both but I have trouble making the transition.
and when I'm shooting near angle high like that it helps to aim at the goalies head or ears too. Just something mechanically and from the puck's view that helps. If you get multiple chances coming down the half wall i like to pound far corner low and get the goalie thinking, then later in the game its easier to catch the goalie near side
depend son how low it is, because, sometimes its so low it seems your pad is going to block it but its just high enough to go over it. (its optical illusion)
Before I played the video, I had a feeling you would say the best place to shoot is the five hole. So true. Remember you can easily miss over the net, but can never miss under the net. And the best tip is to shoot low because a pad save can give up fat rebounds while a high and wide shot ruins the entire flow with the puck sailing off the glass and back out to center ice.
U have amazing tips! But if the goalie is out of position, then its a good to shoot high if you come from side because the goalie isnt covering that other side! And trust me i play at finland selects:)
Hey, I play beer league hockey and I thought it would be cool if you made videos on how to play positions better for example ways to play wingers, centers, and dman like tips to help us low level players play our positions better I would love to see some for d-man positioning
I agree with it all other then the ear. If a goalie at least 5' (roughly 3'6" on the ice) then the angle the puck will travel to score if he is challenging at all will be in the chest all day long. Other than that remember blocker low hardest for a goalie.
I like playing against guys who shoot high all the time. I keep my glove high, and barely have to move it in order to make the save. In close, the best spot to shoot is 5-hole for sure. As long as you're shooting lower than 11 inches, you have a good chance at a rebound if the goalie gets a pad on it.
I like to wrap around, goalie tries to hug the post and get the pads down. If your on the left post, you can generally put it top shelf by the right post.
I'm in peewee and it seems the goalies are quite tall I usually shoot top shelf but they stop it I tried shooting low but it's hard to be deadly accurate to get it just over the pad I go for the ears but there is only one team in my league that the goalie is puck sky the rest use their head literally what should I do PLZ help me I need more goals to help my team THX
That is the toughest place for a goalie to make a save. Josh Harding told me that in person. Whether you're a stand up or butterfly, right above the pad inside the post is the "sweet spot" If you get a good shot off you will score more often than not.
it depends on what league your in because when I play in the rinks majors (ages 13-18) once you reacht he blue line the guys are already in butterfly position waiting for a high shot with their glove and blockers up
I like to introduce myself before I give my opinion my name is Boyd decomenta I play junior hockey for the lindsay muscky's. NowI got to say u do sound like u know your stuff but I do have to disagree with you statement because a goalie doesn't start the from their butterfly. They start standing so in the situation where a player shoot low stick or glove the goalie simply has to slide over into their butterfly to make the easy stomach save.
Yeah, I need this video. Because of my speed I average at least 1 breakaway a game but am struggling. I must say though I do have a lot of success with 5 hole,
I have a really big problem with my game. I am a very nice skater (my dad was too) and I am very good at reading the ice and knowing where people are/should be. I rack up assists every year, but I never really seem to score any goals. I play with confidence, not afraid to take the puck up and I can always make a nice pass. I have a backyard rink that I would go and shoot 50-100 times almost every day and I would say that my accuracy is pretty good. The only time I really score is when someone passes me the puck in front of the net which rarely happens because I am the one that usually digs in the corners and gets the puck in front of the net. Any other time I shoot the puck I either hit another player or the goalie saves it. It is a huge flaw in my game and I wish I could just get better at it. Any tips as to what I can do to maybe help myself score more goals, or should I just not worry about it and keep playing as a play maker and just get assists?
I'm the same way, I'm great at reading the goalie and the ice but I can't seem to get the right shots off when I'm in a game situation so I end up passing to a wide open teammate to make the goal
I don't leave space between the pad and the glove i keep my glove as low as possible to cut down the lower part of the net. most of the players in my league struggle to shoot it high in close without missing the net
that's pretty smart. and then there is that one kid that is tall so when he shoots he's standing up and his shots tend to lift higher for some random reason and it gets you at least twice a game XD
Frist try to put it thru the fine hole if that does not work an there's a rebound off the pad go quick to the other side and bar down goal 🥅 if eneyone reads this thankyou
My favorite spot, ok not favorite but where most of my shots go is straight into the goalies chest. I'm better at scoring goals when I can't even see the net and just throw it onto the net.
Hey Jer! Got an idea for you! I came across a company in Quebec that makes hockey sticks! It's called baton de hockey baker! Or something like that! I just bought one, it's in the mail, but it's supposed to be a 200+$ stick quality for 95 bucks! You know best what to look for in a stick with excellent reviews! I'm sure if you shoot buddy am email or something on fb he'd send you one I try out and review! Would be sick bro if you could do that! Ps thanks for another sick vid bro! Keep em coming
i have watched this video about 4 times and just noticed what team that goalie plays for. i played them in a tourney at lake placid, i assisted on a goal against him
Or you can get pro goalie equipment like mine and left off no rebounds and another thought when i butterfly if I know its going low I put my glove right where hes explains to put it.
Did you forget the most important tip? Get the goalie moving... use your shoulders, head and your eyes to make the goalie move. If you're playing in a league that isn't full of complete dust you'll rarely score just by shooting for these spots. Making the goalie move first and having multiple go to moves is how you score goals. Or you're getting in front of the net and putting away the garbage/screening for goals.
This is all just based on guess work, as a goalie my self I know that 5 hole is difficult to cover in close, especially as I'm quite tall ! But u have to learn the goalie during the match ! Also if a goalie isn't prepared to leave his/her head in the way he/she shouldn't be stood there
My rule usually goes as “If the tendy’s out, deke him out, if the tendy’s in, shelf it in”
That is actually brilliant.
That’s good actually
To anyone reading this, I have a tip. I am a goalie and I'd like to throw in my 2 cents upon the matter. A few psychological tips, and personal bonus things to share.
1. First shot you take, pop it right to his ear. If it doesn't go in, you either hit him/her in the head and rattle them, or it goes over the net. If you hit em hard enough, it's cruel, but it makes them second guess the next shot.

where I am these goalies are really hard headed so if you do any of this they will just say "lucky shot" and cover that area 3X better than before
some good info here, some thats probably overstated, as a goalie of 11 years, and now still an off and on goaltender ive never once been phased by a helmet or cage shot, helmets are made well and leave you with little to be scared of. i am also with bloxhead, every time i got beat high up (didnt happen often, played 10 years of baseball as a second basemen and catcher as well, i had a good glove...) it only made me work harder at stopping the next one, i never doubted my glove, only my positioning and reflexes which made me work harder.
i have talked with many goalies, and ive never heard one say they got down on themselves because a guy beat the, top shelf...
that brings me to my next point, if anything, slipping it under our pads make us a THOUSAND times angrier... it always made me so mad to get beat under the pad, pads now days make it so easy to defend the ice, there was rarely an excuse to let one in that was on the ice.
as for backhand, you are right on the money, all we can do for those is to make ourselves big and hope to block a badly placed backhand. if you are a righty, shooting on a lefty goalie or a lefty shooting on a full right goalie and can shoot backhand well, accurately, you will dominate that side. purely due to reading the puck as stated...
number 4 you are pretty spot on, though i would say you better make it pretty convincing, as you play more, you tend to see fakes a lot, most of them the player decides at the last moment to do and its highly readable as they arent prepeared to really take the shot. but if you practice your fakes and go in knowing how to do them and make them look natural, you will pull the goalie into a butterfly a lot, which gives you that spot he talks about in this video, over the pad, under the glove, rarely do you see goalies that can keep their glove on their pad for long enough to beat an odd lower than expected shot off the ice...
you arent far off, just giving my $.02 from the perspective of a goalie who has taken some shots to the mask and played a few games...
haha, thanks for your comment, some great discussion points.
These tips are just as boss
I have always done this, it's like all-day five-hole because once you smack the shit out of their helmet and bend their cage, they will be very reluctant to drop down.

Yeah right, I saw you score against the Maple Leafs. I guess I helped you break your 4 season long scoring drought!
How To Hockey I kept the puck to
You just got absolutely trolled.
Donald Duck hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Donald Duck just ask to not be the benchwarmer

Andrew Persaud ;) s'all good
Hands of Cinderblock just did that tonight on a breakaway

I've been to that arena, its half hour away from where I live, and the Huntsville Otters logo on the goalies jersey, thats my towns team.
0:29 That's the tallest midget I've ever seen...
XD ikr
Midget hockey is a type of hockey
LOL
It’s the angle not that tall
You deserve more likes🤣
thanks Jeremy last season i only scored 3 goals......this year after watching this vid a long time ago i actually scored 71 goals thnx again jeremy
that's some insane improvement I wish I could do that lol I can probably manage like 13 goals a season. but then again I'm a heavy hitter not a sniper

Not a bad plan. I get a lot of garbage goals cause I live next to the paint 👍🏻
Very true about the area in which you are shooting, you have more to miss than hit when you go top shelf!

I only try to go high when the goalie is already down. Or when they are off their angle. Great tips!
"Where to Shoot to Score More Goals" The general rule of thumb is to shoot where the goaltender isn't.
sounds hard
Lol thanks, I had my first game of the season yesterday and I scored! Thanks for the tips
I love how the goalie got dressed and didn't do anything..

This video changed me from being a top level defenseman with just a hard shot to a top level first line center that can pick goalies apart.
depends on which goalie your on or how tall
Low blocker all day, every day
Especially for lefties!
***** Even a righty like me. All of my 'snipe' goals have been on the blocker side, I'm a left wing or center.

I agree with it all other then the ear. If a goalie at least 5' (roughly 3'6" on the ice) then the angle the puck will travel to score if he is challenging at all will be in the chest all day long. Other than that remember blocker low hardest for a goalie.
Dude thanks for doing this. Im an average player and i want to score more. You help a lot. Keep it up
Thanks This Might Help Me With My Hockey
as a peewee player the goalies are very good with both glove and blocker. so this video helps alot
Thx this is my first year of hockey
I love the five hole. I get it almost every time because I have a quick snap :D
Awesome video Jeremy.
I like to wrap around, goalie tries to hug the post and get the pads down. If your on the left post, you can generally put it top shelf by the right post.
I am in peewee thanks for your help
Hey, have you recorded any of your games that you played?
I'm in peewee and it seems the goalies are quite tall I usually shoot top shelf but they stop it I tried shooting low but it's hard to be deadly accurate to get it just over the pad I go for the ears but there is only one team in my league that the goalie is puck sky the rest use their head literally what should I do PLZ help me I need more goals to help my team THX
That is the toughest place for a goalie to make a save. Josh Harding told me that in person. Whether you're a stand up or butterfly, right above the pad inside the post is the "sweet spot" If you get a good shot off you will score more often than not.
I like skating in really fast and when i'm about 10 feet from the goalie I can usually get 5-hole about 50% of the times that I try it.
it depends on what league your in because when I play in the rinks majors (ages 13-18) once you reacht he blue line the guys are already in butterfly position waiting for a high shot with their glove and blockers up
I go low blocker, 5 hole if i'm feeling saucy, or far to the inside of the post.
I must say though I do have a lot of success with 5 hole,
I'm in peewee and I still usually don't shoot top shelf...I usually go low stick side
I keep telling my friends and teammates to shoot there too!! :)
Awesome video. Thank You
I'll try this tip today in my roller match because ice is where the competition is at
what curve do you most prefer?
Does this also work for inline/ roller hockey?
Is this some place in toronto? Looks familiar to an arena i go to...
Love your videos! Thanks!!
i love hockey
its the best :3
where can I find this article? on howtohockey's site?
What are the numbers for the goalie holes?
Try dekeing more maybe?
I'm the same way, I'm great at reading the goalie and the ice but I can't seem to get the right shots off when I'm in a game situation so I end up passing to a wide open teammate to make the goal
I don't leave space between the pad and the glove i keep my glove as low as possible to cut down the lower part of the net. most of the players in my league struggle to shoot it high in close without missing the net
I got so many goals because of you
Game day tonight, hope this video helped!
I have hockey practice today I am going to try this 2:18
Of my 34 goals this year I've gone bar down on 35... One was not a goal since I batted it out of the air above the cross bar.
wow you beat gretzky you are our father we worship your hockey skills oh great one
When I butterfly unless I know its going high I always drop my blocker and catcher no matter what especially on slap shots.
***** It's not bad though, If you know they're shooting low you drop your hand while butterflying.
that's pretty smart. and then there is that one kid that is tall so when he shoots he's standing up and his shots tend to lift higher for some random reason and it gets you at least twice a game XD
Frist try to put it thru the fine hole if that does not work an there's a rebound off the pad go quick to the other side and bar down goal 🥅 if eneyone reads this thankyou
Helps a lot
this is great idea !!!
I love the five-hole!
My favorite spot, ok not favorite but where most of my shots go is straight into the goalies chest. I'm better at scoring goals when I can't even see the net and just throw it onto the net.
I'm a goalie and I hate blocker side
If you shot for his ear from the hash marks or closer , wouldn't it always miss high?
Keep em coming
i watched this and two games later i got 4 goals in one game and assisted 3 from rebounds thanks
I play midget major AAA AND T1V for my highschool team. And we shoot writers 60-80 mph so
i have watched this video about 4 times and just noticed what team that goalie plays for. i played them in a tourney at lake placid, i assisted on a goal against him
when did you play in lake placid
Also if a goalie isn't prepared to leave his/her head in the way he/she shouldn't be stood there
i like to shoot 5 hole or over the pad like you said
Thanks
I’m a goalie so now I know more to stop
6 inches or so off the ground blocker side is my favourite spot
