    While i was in Utah visiting Matts from matts offroad recovery I saw this awesome classic Rokon sitting next to the building, its a rare 2wd Antique motorcycle and I was told that it has not run in 45 years. Matt later asked if My team and I wanted to get it running for ed. Now we need to take it apart and figure out what needs to be replaced

    Excellent attention to detail and making sure the Rokon is going to be in the best shape for Ed I can not wait to see the look on his face when all of this gets revealed and he can wheel both vehicles again. The smile on his face when he opened your Rokon up and ran away from matt following him was brilliant showed Eds personality so well have a blessed day

    Craig, I really liked the explanation of the springy clutch thingie. Like only using 4x4 in your truck on loose soil or slippery conditions. Never thought about it on a 2x2 bike!

    When you're putting a tank on that has bottom bolts like that, make sure you have all the proper spacer washers and whatever you do, don't over tighten it. You'd be surprised how easily you can poke through your tank on an old bike like that. It happened to me once and I didn't crank that hard on it.

  • @dviljoen

    The spring on the front drive shaft looks like a kind of one-way differential. Since the rear tire doesn't turn but the front one does, the front one may need to go faster than the rear, but it will never go slower. So the differential only allows the front to go faster, but never slower. That's cool.

    • @mwilliamshs

      It's an overrunning clutch

  • @dmc2554
    @dmc2554 2 роки тому +2

    that thing is called a "spring-wrap clutch" ..... I know this because I researched 'em for a company I used to work for...they are VERY tough and are square in cross section! use no lube, this is a dry clutch and relies on friction, so the square cross section gives more surface area to grip the shaft like a dry python with great tensile strength and high wear resistance

    • @pikesticker
      @pikesticker 2 роки тому

      On the Rokon's override clutch assembly it comes from the factory coated with an Anti-seize compound to prevent rust. A rusty spring will break and then you lose your front wheel drive. Its a real pain to tear the bike down to change that spring assembly so they added a keyhole access port under the seat so you can spray additional chain lube in the driveshaft housing to prevent rust from any water that may enter the tubular housing during wet operations. That was the first "warning" the dealer told me about when I bought mine in 1972 for my mining operation....don't let the spring get rusty or else. The upside is you would still have rear wheel drive to get back.

    Just stumbled upon this video. At 73, I remember well the presentation of the Rokon in the early 60's. I remember less fondly that West Bend (Chrysler) engine as I had one on a mini bike about the same time. When rebuilding that engine make absolutley certain that you get the thickest head gasket available. My engine was setup for go-karting and came with a thin head gasket (higher compression). Pulling on that starter rope or trying to kick that engine over might be likened to starting a 441 Victor (BSA). The kick back was VERY unpleasant. Some of those engines even had a compression release, see if you can find and install one of those. Eight years ago I was given a motorized 'ski cycle' to restore. It also had a West Bend 820 engine with thicker head gasket and compression release. Starting that rig was much easier. Hope it all works out for you folks and ED. Take care.

    You know, I found out about your channel through MORR (of course). As you know, Matt and crew as well as their fellow auto-truck centric UA-cam creators from the Utah area present their material wholesomely and with a family vibe. Which brings me to you, Shawn. To hear someone openly profess their Christian faith through Bible verses is refreshing considering where we seem to be at these days. To see them do it on UA-cam is awesome! Glad you're part of the 'family/faith' sphere of UA-cam content I tune in to decompress from an increasingly depressing overload of negativity and distastefulness. 👍and God bless!

    My dad had a 1971 Trailbreaker looked a lot like this one. I was 14 at the time. We took that thing everywhere from elk hunting in the Bitterroot Mountains to me flipping it on its side shutting it off and floating irrigation canals jump shooting ducks. I can’t tell you how many handfuls of half moon keys I replaced on the drive sprocket ends over the years. Noted an Army ammo can on the tail rails just to carry all the tools you needed to keep the thing moving.

    Pretty new to the channel, loving it! I have a 1976 Rokon, so really learned a lot about the guts of my bike! I don’t ride mine as much as I’d like because every ride = a fouled plug. But in this series it’s mentioned you’re running 40:1, that may help. I also purchased a motorized wheelbarrow with the same power bee plant for a spare at a yard sale, but it’s such an awesome machine on its own that will never happen. It has 3 fwd gears and a reverse, can carry 1200lbs up a 30 degree slope!

    For the driveline clutch there is a fix to keep the two bosses together tight. Sometimes if the two bosses are not touching the spring can get pinched then all is done. Also I still recommend adding hydraulic brakes. There are kits for the front, or you can just make something from pit bike parts. There is also a way to add brakes to the rear miter box. It gets set up like the front.

    I raced this engine to a track championship in a sprint kart, they called it “820” class! A single cylinder, two stroke engine with a chromed bore, making it easy to catch cheaters! Hundreds of these motors were purchased to find the perfect port heights then were built into “blue printed” engines as nothing could be altered with its port heights and such. I lucked into purchasing one of these handpicked motors, marked with HP on the block! I was told these motors were originally used to power bilge pumps on ships!

    Probably could have bought Ed a little 125 Cristini to get two wheel drive at less cost. But I get it. Where would the adventure be? Great show guys. I know all the players here but Bikes and Beards. Hope ya both show in Hurricane for meet and greet.

    ACTUALLY, in a turn the Rear tire cuts the corner, makes a smaller radius IE: Travels a shorter distance than the front. Therefore Sprague type clutch allows the front tire to freewheel and STEER! UNLESS the rear tire loses traction then its 2wd! If there was no Sprague clutch- it would steer horribly bad.

    Came over to your channel following Ed's Rokon. Really liked the description of the cool drive train. Thank you so much for your valuable contribution. And thank you for the scripture quote. You are now one of my favorite channels!

    make sure that slip joint in the shaft is working good, otherwise you will dump it in turns in the slick stuff.

    It's hard to believe what all you've done to it. Great job hats off to you. I know for a fact Ed will like abs appreciate it. I have one just like it. And a little younger than Ed. Could we get numbers and addresses where to get parts? Cause I know I'm going to need some. I'll be happy just to make mine run. Thank you. I 👍👍👍👍

    Interesting to watch you work on Ed's Rokon. It would help if you kept the music a bit more subtle. We're going along with no music, just talking, then it's blasting out the music, then back to soft talking. Turn the music down to about 1/4 of whatever you used for this video and it would be better.

    Rokon sells new fuel tanks but they are plastic and you need to weld a threded boss to the frame to mount it the old metal tanks are hard to find. I have had several of the old TAILBRAKERS good luck!!

    If you have trouble finding peace in mind with patience.. Remember you are doing what is already written in time. God test us in our weaknesses and strengthen.. As know that God granted me the cerenity to accept the things I cannot change and the courage to know the difference. Love the hard work. And thanks for sharing.
