Man, this is so true, even for less film-focused creative works, too. I struggle with it every day.

You should never be too critical of the first outings. They are what MAKE you a better film maker. I did a job for an Amdram (Amateur Dramatics) Group who were putting on Carmen. I had a week to film from every angle you could imagine. All on Digital Hi8 Tape. (SHHHHHH). I worked with what I had, cutting and manoeuvring around the software of the day and the Amdram LOVED it. They were not DVD's then. But VHS tapes. (AHHHHH). LOL
All these years later I am now about to take the master tapes into FCPX 10.2.2 and "have at it" with more experienced eyes. It is not going to be for sale. It is to see how I have changed since then as a film maker. (hopefully I have improved).
The project of taking someone at random, a relative, a mate, and do a simple cut about (or Radio Cut, as it would be known) is a backward step for you, IMHO.
I have followed you from the start and admired your work ethic and how you are growing all the time. Take a few years and THEN go back and do a "Directors Cut" with todays advantages in technology and software/hardware.
Keep 'em coming, mate. You're doing just fine.

I remember struggeling for my last video. I was so angry of myself thinking that I was working on something so bad! But we actually won the 2nd prize on a film competition ;3 Thanks to you :)
When the crew members trusts you, it makes you worry even more. I mean they trust you, they expect something from you and the thought of dissapointing them is tough enough.

After having made film for a few years, I now have this tremendous sympathy for every film that gets bad reviews. I mean, knowing how much effort i put into making something like a 5-minute-film, makes me cry almost thinking about how much effort someone put into a feature just to have it slaughtered. It's important that filmmakers remind one another that we're not alone in this dauntingly difficult line of work. Making a film is hard - making a good film is really, really hard. Godspeed, everyone.

you can never like your own film.. beacuse you see the things you did wrong.. However those mistakes are only mistakes compared to what you had visualised before making it..but still this disatisfactions is what makes us become better
Two things I have never been able to do:
1) Watch any of your videos and not relate to it in some way and
2) Watch any of your videos and not wanted an apple by the end!

Great Video. I'm constantly feeling like this. Even when I'm finishing one project, all I can think about is the next one. I always seem to be asking myself, " When am I going to make something actually good?" I wonder if that will ever go away.

I love the mesage, but what I REALLY LOVED was the way you did a j cut with the audio coming in a split second before your video did. That was a really powerful effect for me.

Great work man! As an artist I understand that I am my own worst enemy. I pull my work apart and find every flaw, even though a hundred people may love it. I know the feeling and love your advice! Taking the focus off of you and the project and putting the focus on someone else and how it will impact them!
It's nice to hear this from a bit more of an experienced filmmaker

The amount of times I think "Ugh, this is garbage. If I start over from the beginning I can make it so much better!" is uncountable. You have to realize that's not the case and stick to it until the end.

Thanks Simon for making this. Most people don't state this obvious procrastination that we filmmakers have. I have such a hard time every time I make a film and feel like I want to quit every time because I'm not good enough. I love your idea of making something for someone else, you are definitely right that we are the most critical of ourselves. Thank you.

OMG this explains so much about what I feel all the time about my (small amount of) work...
My First film i shot, was an amature action Movie, ive done with my friends.
We decided to make a xmas present for our parents and it was a great project for all of us and now my parents have great memories:)

I'd say if you have the technical knowledge, the toughest part is always coming up with good ideas. You could be amazing at lighting, scene setup, shooting, editing, sound, special effects, but with 0 scripts and ideas, you have nothing but photographs. On the other hand, a lot of people have tons of ideas but spend no time learning anything so they're not able to create anything. Probably the easiest thing is to team up.
All the greats have surrounded themselves with the absolute best people in the industry. Watch any of their early works, shorts, etc. Gives you a more realistic view of what they did with no budget, & what you can potentially achieve with an adequate budget.
I'm am going to shoot my first film now, and this video was such a boost.

It's so scary sometimes: when I'm at a really difficult part of filmmaking it just crosses my mind of the possibility of giving up right then and there. I never do but it just scares me that I think that sometimes!

Everyone even the pros have these thoughts. We all humans. Just that some are more advanced than others. Eventually with time and effort youbwill get to your destination. If you desire to be a filmmaker and work on it everyday. Perhaps ypu skip college because you are concentrated in filming. If you have to work for 2 years to get enough money for your films. Then so be it. Whatever you do. Do it because thats what you want. What will be your legacy? One life brother. One life to do that. Let's risk it.

+Paxton Wills The way I see it causing a creative block is when you are trying to make something really-really good and top notch, having super high expectations and putting a lot of pressure on yourself. This, to me, is taking it too seriously. The opposite would be doing something just for fun and not worrying about whether it will turn out to be groundbreaking.
I feel like this so often, when I make something without a vision I usually am content, like one I made for my choir a while back but when I make something that I plan it rarely lives up. I suppose that's a good thing though room to improve and when comparing the two the one I planned objectively looks better and I know I was aiming much higher so even despite missing the mark i improved

I'm working on also a project, and I wonder if I'm able to top my previous work.
I would like to add to the 'make it for someone specific', that you should find at least 1 fan who is knowledgeable, recognises your works core beauty, and you see frequently.
Having no film friends, you'll not get specific detailed recognition. They do not recognise the beauty, often cannot feel it, let alone be able to verbalise it. Their commends do not get past, I like it, love it, hate it. However these laymen can provide some value, for instance to know how 'accessible' you need your art to be. Often with a bit of prompting and education the can start to see the depth layers, and maybe they'll grow an interest and love for your (branch of) art. Having an expert friend can really be helpful at much deeper levels, though making something for them is really challenging because you know it needs to be perfect for you, but still your expert can see a 100 things that could be done better. However maybe the mindset then could be, make something short, something out of your comfort zone. Analyse yourself, and see how the expert's observations surprise you. It maybe more a tutor-student relation. But pleasing, or should I say surprising? experts is really difficult to do. What are experts looking for anyway?
What are you looking for when watching / reviewing other peoples work?
How has that changed over the course of your filming career?
Bonus;
Making something specific for someone also helps you to focus on the other persons mind, and learn how that person works and thinks in great(er) detail. This knowledge will make the characters you write in the future deeper, colourful and interesting, because you know people intimately. And like photography and other arts intimacy is the way to the receiver's heart.

Simon, after watching your videos the past few days I'm slowly remembering why I love doing this stuff. I can feel myself shifting into the storyteller stage. As a guy with similar talents, it makes me feel hopeful that I can make something of myself watching your great videos. Please keep it up.
I admire your candor. It is true that, in the end, we creative artists (not just filmmakers) must not lose sight of our goal: to create an emotional impression on the viewer/listener, whether by telling a story or sending a message. Everything else serves just to help us achieve that goal- every microphone, every paintbrush, every plugin, etc. If you were able to move the audience emotionally even in the slightest way, then, mission accomplished.
We all go through it but as long as you done your best at the time in which you shot it that means it's a job well done, when we can look at old work and see we can do better, that's when we're going places, because you can't be the best with no growth. You failed to mention the other alternative. That is looking at the 'greats' (as u say) and using them as inspiration, and accepting yourself that you are not there yet, but if u keep working you might be. The peaks and valleys you talk about can be avoided simply be refusing to allow self doubt to creep into your mind. It's not something that happens to you. You make it happen. You start to criticise your work, and that leads to a downward spiral. You are able to interupt that at any time, if you just allow yourself. I used to be like that, now I know how to avoid those traps, and how to get out of them before they start simply be learning to recognise when your mental outlook changes to the negative, that's when you need to intercede and find a way to change it back to positive. Then you can be truly creative. The idea that you have to have pain to be creative is movie clap trap.

great thoughts. It's all about having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. With a growth mindset you can use the things that discourage you and turn them into things that inspire you.
