  • I had a go at recreating some of Ivo Peter’s classic Somerset and Dorset railway footage on my layout this week.
    The Somerset and Dorset was a line of quirky individuality, great scenery and one that seemed to struggle against overwhelming odds. Its main line climbed to 247m above sea level and it contained several single line sections, but on summer Saturdays it managed to handle a huge volume of holiday trains, when it seemed every possible locomotive was drafted into service to handle heavy trains requiring double-heading and banking over the steep gradients.
    Locomotives featured:
    92211 BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 (Bachmann)
    73030 BR Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 (Bachmann)
    76114 BR Standard Class 4MT 2-6-0 (Bachmann)
    75062 BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0 (Hornby)
    44044 Midland 4F 0-6-0 (Bachmann)
    34032 West Country Class ‘Camelford’ 4-6-2 (Hornby)
    As always, thanks for watching.
    All footage copyright of respective owners. This video is for education purposes only and is not commercialised.

    Every time one thinks- "okay, he can't come up with a new presentation," you blow it out of the ballpark as we say here. That was a brilliant mix of reality and art. If you aren't pleased with yourself for that piece of work- you'll never be happy. That was supreme!

      @@MouldyRaspberry So do I. The best we can do is watch Ivo Peters wonderful films and photos and try to get a feel of what the line might have been like on our model railways as you have done. If you haven't already, I recommend that you watch Bath Greenpark on UA-cam. It is an O gauge layout and really gives you a sense of what the line was like.

    Lewis,
    What a treat - SDJR transposed to YDMR! Great to see the transposed context recreated with hints from historic clips from the great Ivo Peters, without whose work over many years the Herculean effort of the joint railway and an essential service to the former Somerset coalfields, would by now have been forgotten.
    Though I have previously mentioned to you my connection to & memories of GWR railway cottages in south Somerset, I probably didn’t mention 2 periods of my being a ‘near neighbour’ to sections of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway - a line shared between Midland (LMS) and LSWR (Southern), but passing through GWR territory, .
    1: in 1952, with my young brother, I was taken to a Somerset CC children’s home for months whilst our Mum was away in hospital. The children’s home at Bawdrip was on the Branch of SDJR from Evercreech Junction to Bridgwater. It overlooked Bawdrip Halt, but that section of line closed in late 1952. In June 1953 I remember being walked down the hill by the Matron, under the railway bridge, as the oldest child resident at the Home, so I could attend the TV showing of HM Queen’s coronation. The TV was on the altar as all the village residents joined in the celebrations and together watched the only TV set in the village.
    2. Years later, but not long before Beeching, my parents moved to Bath, off Englishcombe Lane, overlooking the 1 in 40 single track climb up Devonshire bank, out of the city, towards a tunnel shown at 9:08 clip. Since the S&D closed, I’ve often driven through towns, country and former stations along the former route of this idiosyncratic line. Today I live within 5 miles of the eventual destination of those southbound passenger services viz. the now demolished station at ‘Bournemouth West’. Peter

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  4 роки тому

      Thank you Peter, appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed this one. The only TV set in the village, crazy! Sound like good memories though. I wonder whether you ever passed Ivo Peters at any point!

    • @Pjs75
      @Pjs75 4 роки тому +1

      Lewis, My journeys over the Mendips toward the coast only really started years after the line closure, especially when we moved to Dorset. That was a long time after Ivo Peter’s Bentley was chasing trains between viewpoints.
      Bath has always been a focal point for my wife & me, as we met and married there. The winding journey via Radstock, Shepton Mallet, Templecombe towards the Stour, by road takes in beautiful countryside beating more direct routes unless time is essential.
      As for TV sets, like many, my parents only bought a 12” Echo floor standing TV after the Coronation. Consumer goods, like cars and household appliances really only became more affordable & so widespread from the 1960s.
      YDMR, a Great layout! Peter

Added to the fact that I have been within metres of some of those filming locations, your skill at replicating the scenes is, as ever, well thought out and directed. Hi Lewis, fabulous video splicing footage from the real SDJR in with your own layout of trains that ran on the SDJR. The old SDJR route is local to me and I worked in Bath for many years so the shots of the trains on your layout with the two tunnels and viaduct reminds me of the old route climbing out of Bath through Lyncombe Vale with the Devonshire and Combedown Tunnels. :-) There is a great UA-cam channel called Bath Greenpark which is well worth watching. Stay Safe and look forward to the next video...a GWR themed episode..??? Gary

Just what I needed to lift my spirits up as I received a new prototype for test-assembly... can't wait to see what will come next... Severn ? Dartmouth line ? West Somerset ? Or perhaps the Settle-Carlisle ? Any of those would get me extatic !

      Thanks Eric. I did think the same thing - almost all the footage I could find was passenger trains, and the only freight footage I could find was hauling my 7Fs, which I don’t have! Now you mention that, there are plenty of these I could do! It’s got to be Settle-Carlisle next I think!

      @@MouldyRaspberry Yes ! I really like that line, even if it's not a former GWR one... The advantage also is that you'd be able to either run freight & passenger steam, as I know there are nice videos there of both type of trains on that line, or also you could run contemporary freight & passenger trafic with touristic steam trains intertwined between them like it is nowadays... Two videos I like about the line are the documentary by Michael Portillo in his "Great British Railways Journeys" serie, and an old VHS documentary on the history of the line I had found at my local club in Liège and inherited as I am the only UK-prototype modeller in the club and perhaps even in the area... (most UK prototype modellers apparently are located in the flanders & in the Netherlands it seems... ). If I come along the documentary on UA-cam, I'll forward you the link !

    Yep as I suspected!
    Despite the single track you’d of thought it was the S&D! Then again after templecombe it was single for a Stretch.
    Should’ve sent me an email and I’d of lent you my 7F to use.

    Fabulous, I know its a cliche but you could always get the model of Ivo Peters Bentley should you choose to echo some of his other films , or if he visits the Yorkshire Dales !

      @MouldyRaspberry  4 роки тому +1

      Ah yes I forgot about the classic Bentley! Now you mention that I recall a few people including it on S&D layouts I’ve seen in magazines. I wonder he’d think of it!

    Really enjoyed the way you have edited this. The youtube footage looks to be copied from old VHS Ivo's original was shown on BBC years ago and was really good quality I think he used 16mm film rather than the usual 8mm.

      @MouldyRaspberry  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I thought that might be the case, some of the footage I went through did look like really good quality. I’ll have to see if I can get a hold of them.

      Try searching The Ivo Peters Collection which is a series of his films on DVD. They may still be available

    Great S & D tribute. I now must watch Ivo's videos again! Good to see the complex reversals at Templecombe.
    What coaching stock was on the last train and the one at 9.22?
    Big thanks for this video! Best wishes, Bob.

      Thank you Bob, glad you liked it. They’re two Gresley suburbans and a Thompson suburban (or perhaps the other way around?). I still need a brake coach for that set but they are £45 new, so I’m waiting until one pops up second hand somewhere.

    Like your layout concept,and how to create scenery.Could you show how it is wired and the method of control, if you have not already.Watched most of the Videos and look forward to each new one.thanks.

      Thanks Dennis, appreciate it. Yes, but it will be a 10 second video! It’s just a couple of powered rail joiners at either end of the layout. I use a gaugemaster combi with an extended lead to walk up and down the loft. That’s literally it!

    How many years did it take to build this railway? it is stunning, but how do you keep the dust off it?

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  2 роки тому +1

      I started it in 2018 I think and had pretty much finished by 2020. I don’t really have any issues with dust luckily.

    amazing video mate and a very beautiful recreation of the legendary S&D only thing missing is a 7F but the trains were amazing recreations and gotta love the sound effects mind if i ask whats the longest passenger train the layout can handle?

    • @MouldyRaspberry
      @MouldyRaspberry  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you. So much of the old footage is of 7Fs and I couldn’t use any of it! As many coaches as my strongest loco could handle I guess, the longest I’ve had on is 12/13 coaches.
