I do have a theory. The whole Utah thing is actually mocking fans, with all of our lore Expectations. It is also meant to harken back to the early days of the Dream SMP as well, with it being more funny and nonsense. So yeah, Utah is for comedic sakes

My theory is that Wilbur by travelling to Utah is actually in Season 2 already. So everyone is gonna have different characters but Wilbur is gonna be the same as Season 1. Would be a cool idea and could be why Wilbur isn’t going to do as much lore in Season 2, he has mentioned this before, as his character will already have lore. 🤷♀️
Just a theory!
I actually think this theory is more than plausible, my reason being that if wilbur really didn’t intend to make the ending about him dying (and, i should mention, not just dying on accident, he intentionally sailed off into a storm, to quote him, “i better get going because i don’t think i have much left of this storm”), then why would he write that part in eret’s book where he associated utah and the desert to a (good) afterlife (as opposed to the train station, a not so lovely place)? Why give people a reason to believe something when you don’t intend it to come into play? It’s chekhov’s gun again, you can’t not use it.
I think what really happened is wilbur killed himself in the finale, but instead of doing it like he did last time and making it all sad, he used this whole good afterlife utah thing to make it a good ending. Wilbur finally apologized to everyone and finally got peace.
And also i think this interpretation of the ending works really well with some other details form the stream like the poem Ozymandias with wilbur being Ozymandias, a statue of a long forgotten (and most importantly long dead) ruler, surrounded only by the ruins of his once great kingdom (lmanberg).
And the thing about this poem ending that works the best with this theory is the bit he adds after the poem, the part where he says “but i never did quite forgive myself”, a response to the part where tommy said that the person he should apologize to the most is himself. Wilbur apologized and wilbur didn’t forgive wilbur, so wilbur killed himself.
I don’t know, that’s how i see the ending. I think if you look at it this way, a lot of seemingly random and unexplainable things add up really nicely.

I'd like to think there's some deeper meaning behind this conclusion... But it's entirely possible that it's just a joke, and we're all part of Wilbur's experiment to see what the fans will do with this confusing ending.

@@averagegenzguy2751 idk if you’re talking about the server or the anime because the server isn’t canceled and the anime is still being worked on
I think when Wilbur writes that one day they will “all finally pass on” (2:03), I think it’s a metaphor for passing on from the server. In a sense, their character died in a metaphorical way because they left their character on the Dream SMP and are now ‘passing on’ to the real world.
This makes so much sense! It could very well be what Wilbur intended.
He choose Utah because it's funny, no-one who has even seen a photo of that place is excited to go there. I like to think that in the epilogue when hes in the desert cheering, it's because hes managed to escaped the smp (maybe once you've died and been revived it's possible to escape, or maybe the decades of limbo time allowed him to learn how). I dont know how it's going to tie into season 2, but I think taking Wilbur off the board is overall a good thing. Ffor season 2 to be it's own thing, a few of the main characters probably need to become ancilliary character's, and the ones with really complex lore could probably do with taking a backseat for a while to figure out what they want to drop and what they want to keep.
On Eret's note he references Ozymandias actually!
I love how Wilbur referenced Ozymandias in the finale stream, I feel like it describes his character well (a man who looked down on people, got too ambitious and too powerful, and ended up losing it all)

Real out there theory. What if DSMP Season 2 is actually SMP Earth Season 2, with DSMP style lore and all DSMP members. Also featuring some Live-Action lore segments in the actual locations IRL where the lore is set.

To me it seems like Utah isn't a limbo, it's an afterlife. Limbo is traditionally the place between life and death, I think that since Wilbur finished all his goals and made peace he was finally able to go to the full afterlife, being Utah for some reason

I think he went through a portal. I feel like it's important that he sailed off into the sea in the direction of Foolish's summer home, it's the only real desert on the server (all others were terraformed) plus there was a storm at the time which can be connected to him. The summer home has frequent god activity with DreamXD + Callahan visiting often too. what if the area is so magically dense that a portal can open off the coast into another world?
If he was from Utah it would mean he lied from the very beginning about making lmanburg for Europeans, thats why he's always felt so bad about what happened he was never telling the truth he never fit in and all it did was hurt people. That's why he can't forgive himself
What if after you get "revived" you aren't actually alive again, you're back for the moment, to fix your wrongs, forgive yourself, etc
And if you dont, you go back to limbo
Cause i like to think limbo is a place you go if you have regrets.
And the desert (utah) is where you go if you forgive yourself, or no longer have any or at least close to no regrets left, and you can start anew in the afterlife.

Basically you get revived to fix your mistakes, and atone for them.
You aren't revived forever until you die again, you're revived for a certain amount of time depending on how much shit you did while you were alive and if you managed to get others to forgive you? Awesome, one step closer but what you really need to do is forgive yourself then you can pass on to the much more peaceful afterlife instead of the painful limbo.
Didn't Wilbur edit the poem "Ozymandias" to fit him as the king? And doesn't that poem take place in a desert wasteland? And didn't he mention the poem way back in the beginning of the server?
I feel like your idea of Will having a new character will happen… I mean, Phil said that Techno was going to have a new character who loved government. Technoblade, the character was supposed to go on a vacation or something. So I think we might get a few new characters.

My friend and I have formed a crack theory pile to try to explain all this crap
Theory 1: run of the mill, just that Utah was a euphemism for the afterlife
THEORY 2: (this is where it goes off the rails) C!Wilbur was born and raised in Utah. Why was he british you ask? BECAUSE IN THIS ALTERNATE UNIVERSE the Americans lived in England, and oppressed the British, who lived in America. (Explains the accents and stuff)
Theory 2.B: Explaining why Wilbur liked sailing: California and Nevada had gotten climate-changed and drowned out of existence, so Utah was no longer a landlocked state
THEORY 3: Ok so we think that SMP Earth was where Wilbur went "home" to. This is based of f the fact that after wilbur joined the DSMP, he pretty much didn't log on to SMP earth again. He got called home to SMP Earth.
Theory 3.B: instead of swapped-role-revolution-thingy,, we just said because SMP Earth was mostly British, there were no Americans in this situation and the British have had America since forever.

This feels like the finale of Lost.
Imagine all the SMP members start off season 2 in live action and then they go back into Minecraft
if i’m honest him saying that he was going to Utah 100% has a deeper meaning than that. Think about it. Utah has literally no water around the country so how the hell is Wilbur gonna sail there. Second of all, he already said to “not trust the Americans” despite himself being canonically American, so he might have been lying about something. Third of all, on one of his QSMP streams he has literally described Utah to be an allegory for death, which weirdly fits perfectly. Also, at the cutscene where Wilbur is seen irl at “Utah” it seems kind of weird that he would act that way. We can see that Ranboo’s limbo includes a desert surrounded by water, and seeing that the train platform and the flooded world are the only confirmed limbos could indicate that that little cutscene wasn’t even close to being Utah. All that explains that Wilbur did not in fact go to Utah, but instead probably died in some way (aka dying via sewer slide)

Idea: Utah is where Wilbur was initially born in Utah but was put up for adoption by his og parents and Phil adopted Wilbur (this would also mean Wilbur has a secret brother) which is also going to result in Phil and Wilbur having a huge falling out because Wilbur would go to his og home instead of the area where people cared about him.
