Walt Disney World Doesn't Have A Plan For The Future

  • Walt Disney World Orlando is not prepared at all for Universal Studios Orlando Epic Universe. Recently announcing their Walt Disney World new rides for the coming years at the D23 expo, the future of Disney World is clearly bleak as next to nothing is coming to the Orlando theme parks. Disney World Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney Hollywood Studios all have their own internal issues as well, which are not getting addressed either. It seems that Walt Disney World is just not concerned about Universal Orlando Epic Universe and believe that they can do next to nothing and still succeed.

Something I wanna point out is how nervous everyone looked when “announcing” the blue sky projects. That wasn’t an average announcement look. They knew their panel was lackluster, and pulled out those ideas as a last resort. They aren’t unaware of how big of a threat Epic Universe is, they are FULLY aware of it and realize just how much they screwed up when they realized they had nothing planned. They literally announced those pitches out of *fear*

I think of this whole thing as a bit like internet explorer. It was good, but didn't keep up with other browsers (parks) in terms of addition because they got complacent due to their market share and didn't see the others as major threats, which will lead them to either improve their parks or die. That's the best metaphor I can think of.

“Disney does not work as the side part of the trip.” This right here is the problem. Universal has more affordable hotels that are just as good. So if I’m staying there, it’s an expensive headache to add a few days at Disney with all of the excessive planning that has to be done. Universal is straight forward with very little planning needed.

I think 10-15 years from now we'll be watching videos on the shocking decline of Disney. They became Disney because of their imagineering. The parks were magical places to go to when I was a kid. Fast forward to today, where Disney I stead of dreaming up amazing ideas, has bought just about every IP they can get their hands on, flood the market with movies and shows so you can sell merchandise. They don't build new theme park attractions anymore, they build gift shops for their characters. And if all of that isn't bad enough, they now write movie scripts not to make a good movie, but to introduce new characters or environments that can be used at a theme park in an attempt to extract yet even more money from their fans.
it's going to be extremely satisfying to watch Universal win this battle.

I think Disney's biggest doomsday event is generational. The generations that attend Disney today did not have options like Universal in the 70's and 80's and most of the 90's. I hear all the time about the nostalgia aspect and people bringing their kids to the parks as a kind of rite of passage. The doomsday event is when all these kids born in the 2000's grow up and start having their own kids they are not going to have the same nostalgia attraction and will have no problem taking their kids born in 2020 and beyond to Epic Universe or Studios before going to Disney. Disney is a brand like Apple, for some its all about status. So they can get away with premium pricing and not offering anything truly innovative... although RotR and Guardians is really nice. Flight of Passage is cool too.

We’re already see this happen, but it’s clear that Disney is prioritizing a higher class audience of guests, especially with their recent cruise ship and park add ons. Universal however seems to want to remain open to the average citizen, with more affordable prices and less crowded parks. I think in the oncoming years we’ll see a massive divide grow between Disney and Universal as equally popular parks but with largely different audience classes.

I think the peak of how bad some of these ideas are is Dinoland being considered for replacement by Zootopia and Moana. Disney has always handled dinosaur IP pretty poorly (Disney's Dinosaur and the good dinosaur are considered to be not well received), but Dinoland holds a lot of younger kids well due to it's theming as well as it's flat rides and carnival attractions. It's basically what you recommended for Lost Continent in a previous video, except Disney needs the space for holding guests far more than Universal does. Cutting Dinoland USA is essentially forfeiting the Dinosaur market over to Universal Studios, which is abysmal when you consider how Walt Disney World already has to deal with the Marvel agreement and this is essentially giving a monopoly of Dinosaur attractions as well. Dinosaurs are such a draw for young children and families, and while Dinoland could have cleaned up visuals or theming (It's pretty outdated especially compared to Jurassic sections of Universal Studios), I think the premise of Dinoland is solid and it just needs a modernization rather than a replacement because the public understanding of Dinosaurs and spatial management of theme parks has evolved a lot in the last 30 years. Moana is already present in Walt Disney world at EPCOT as well so there's really no reason to put it here, and if you did put it here you would put it in the Asia section! I could see high potential for a Zootopia area, but what about putting it in it's own immersive area at Hollywood Studios instead similar to Galaxy's edge?

The sad thing in all this is that despite the decline in WDW’s offerings for the money you pay, people still keep paying it. So even if Epic Universe captures some of Disney’s market share, Disney will still make more money & satisfy investors. It’s a vicious cycle. That said, my next annual pass will be Universal …. I think one of the biggest signs that Disney just doesn't have a clue on where to go was what happened during the early days of the pandemic. With the parks closed, cashflow was virtually down to a trickle and so a lot of projects had to be canceled or put on hold, and what does Disney do? Instead of investing in park infrastructure or new rides, they pour everything they have left available into the Galactic Starcruiser. A thing nobody wanted, costs SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS for essentially all day dinner theatre, is transparently just stuff they cut from Galaxy's Edge for budget reasons, and within a single year has already likely exhausted the bulk of the target audience who could even afford it.
Meanwhile, Everest got taken down for refurbishment and they literally don't care enough to bother trying to fix the Yeti even though it would be the perfect time to go ahead and do what needs to be done. The Monorail trains are in dire need of replacement, legitimately dangerous given the parts falling off and the doors not closing on rare occasions (plus the smell). They won't even entertain the idea of rebuilding Disneyland's Peoplemover even though that would be a godsend for the park as a crowd-eater attraction with excellent throughput. Hell, the number one thing that would restore faith in Disney more than anything is fixing Journey into Imagination to its original state and it's INSULTING that all they did with Figment was make a stupid mascot costume for a meet and greet instead of actually giving him his attraction back properly.
No. Disney decided they needed a big, stupid, small capacity hotel that doesn't actually support any of the existing parks and was a bad idea from the moment of conception. Because they thought they could constantly milk rich people of six thousand dollars for years.

I’ve wondered for several years what is Disney’s plan for a new Tomorrowland besides Tron? This parks panel confirms they have NO PLANS. They don’t have any IP to put in Tomorrowland since Star Wars, Marvel, and Toy Story have their own lands. Disney is afraid to create new original attractions for the parks. In the past Disney used CORPORATE SPONSORS to help fund new attractions, but they’ve largely moved away from them post-2008. When an attraction’s sponsorship ends and isn’t renewed, the ride is typically doomed to close.
Disney is intentionally building slow because they have contracts with the Asia parks that when they get a new ride, it’s exclusive there for 5 years. Timed exclusive rides.

Epic Universe is very likely to do well. However, the way in which it will do well is a different story. I think it will come down to two possibilities:
    1. The park will cause Disney to lose a percentage of their market share, as more people are coming to Universal Resort or making the resort a more significant part of their overall Florida trip.
    2. People will choose to visit Epic Universe instead of one or both of the existing Universal parks, with the new park either not affecting Disney at all or, better yet for them, bringing more tourists to Florida who will end up going to Walt Disney World.
I do not see that second option speculated enough, and it did not even cross my mind till I read more or less the same thing online, but it is a very real possibility. However, we will not know till 2025.

Everyone praises universal so I went on my last visit, without my kids, and sure, it wasn’t as crowded and the hagrid ride was fun and the Harry Potter stores were cool even though they were just stores.
My under 5 niece went and she basically rode the Simpsons spinner ride. That was the only thing she could do. I know there’s some Seuss stuff but we didn’t get over there. Disney is expanding into the competitive market with the tron rollercoaster.

Hell, not like they need a 5th gate when the 4 gates alone make up the largest tourist destination on the planet. Then add in the issue with Florida and how Florida revoked Disney's independent status as well as their freedom to do what they want on the property, and Disney now has to go through the state if they wish to do something new on their property.

Go back to Velocicoaster where they literally said it was going to be a churro stand until a few months out.
My theory is Disney has learned that they shouldn’t be announcing things so far in advance and get crowds disappointed (looking at you Tron). Like if they didn’t even announce Tiana until now it would have been such a huge surprise. But they decided it would be better as a PR move to announce it in the middle of 2020 in order to score brownie points and now it’s almost like it’s old news.

However, outside of Nintendo everything else is going to be new ventures in terms of rides and attractions. Now if all of these rides and shows are industry game changing then yes it will certainly take away market share. However, if only half of these new additions are great like recent additions of Hagrids, Velocicoaster, etc and the others aren’t “epic” (Jimmy Fallon, Fast and Furious, Simpsons) then Universal will certainly get the crowds, but maybe not as much hype as we are expecting and people will ultimately only go once or might even wait until there are new expansions.

Therefore if universal takes away a chunk of the crowds Disney are already trying to get rid of, and leaves Disney with those guests who are already willing to pay a high premium to visit, Im not sure they'd be too disappointed with that, as they'll cream off the higher spend per visit guests and at the same time be able to offer them a (slightly) less crowded day at Disney......mean while Universal will have to start dealing with the overcrowding issues Disney currently face as the masses realize its a much better value proposition as it stands! I suspect Disney care more about maximizing spend per guest than numbers through the gate given the market advantage they currently enjoy!
