what a beautiful story!! on so many levels. And Isabel is so correct when she points out that people do not 'put up with' relatives anymore because they haven't been taught to. Pity that. How much better off everyone would be if they surrounded friends and family with a warm blanket of acceptance and love. It is a very lonely cold world out there for most people.
I am with Quentin Crisp on this one, relatives should not overstay their welcome and like fish go off after three days. Not sure if he borrowed this from someone else but I certainly agree with him - thankfully you can select friends but sadly landed with relatives
This has so much of the dramatics in it , fairly wore me to a frazzle ! Couldn’t help but keep on listening, it’s so far distant from how we speak together nowadays. Ah , how they lived back then 🧐
Shortly following the end of WWII, Isabel, a widow, finds herself struck with pangs of conscience. When she was a young woman during WWI, she deliberately interfered with the delivery of a letter meant for someone else. Now she feels she must confess and do what she can to repair the damage.
I was thoroughly disgusted with Tilly Cuff and thought Isabel was being a great fool who'd regret her decision in the end, but was so glad that everything worked out to everyone's relief and satisfaction! Really enjoyed this play.
Dear God, how depressing- though well written and acted. I imagine a companion play, dealing with the forthcoming murder mystery about 5 years after those two start living together. Seriously- if they were supposed to be 'gels' in 1913, they would be about the age of my late grandparents, all of whom lived well into their 80s, and the thought of being shackled to someone like this for more than a quarter of a century is horrifying.
Many women had to make a home together because an entire generation of men were slaughtered in the 1st World War. So many women lost their fiances or husbands or simply had no hope of finding a suitable man. Read Vera Britten's "A Testament of Youth" Her brother and his 2 best friends, one of which was her fiance all died. This carried on after the 2nd World War for the same reason.
It's meant satirically. Sharp was a great observer, and points out that sometimes a foolish seeming act is wise. But it takes a while for the rest of their circle to see it. But you saw it right off!
I thoroughly enjoy these old plays from BBC Saturday Night Theatre, so thank you very much for sharing this one,
One of the best plays I heard in ages.

Forget Downton Abbey. Listening to this makes me feel like I’m there! ❤️
What a delight! I LOVE British radio programs! Always excellent. What a good story. I’ve enjoyed this one several times! Thanks for the enjoyment! ❤️
Thanks. I read Margery Sharp novels years ago. Even Miss Bianca and Bernard. as a librarian ,of course :-)
A lighthearted play with no deaths! Lovely change👌
😂😂 I’m reading the comments as I’m listening …. You’ve dashed my hopes that someone would throttle Tilly!!

Loved it! Thank you ❤

If only there was still such brilliant writing as this.
I wonder if any of sharp's other books has been dramatized. They're always entertaining.
These are just magic. So English. 🇦🇺
Fabulous! Thanks for sharing. 🤗

Absolutely fabulous listening many thanks♥️ I love these plays 👏👏👏👏
A perfectly satisfactory unpleasant arrangement.
Living a selfless life....that iscwhat I believe we are called to do. ❤
One in a series of “Sybil Thorndyke’s favorite” plays (as the grand dame Isabel).
Nice Play.

That's a long description . Not one word of it told us what the story is about🤔
Interesting play, excellent Title as it describes Isabel to a tee, a very silly woman, just proves ' A Fool and his/her money are soon parted'😳
😊
Not my cup of tea. Ruin someone's youth and then think it's possible to make amends decades later. No thank you.
Dora is 56, she sounds more like 86
When 56 was 86 then lol
All that and no quick synopsis??!
An interesting study of the end of the entitled, middle class lifestyle, good bye 👍
So, did Tilly really love Mr MacGregor?
I have 10 minutes left. Hope there is a twist.
Awful Isabel! Nothing can repair the bad of her doings!
Great ply, so tired of actors thinking an Australian accent passes for a NZ one🙄

I don't really see why she's foolish.
