spend 15 hours on a project to save a few bucks, that sounds like my life lol. The thing is, guys like us enjoy the process and the sense of accomplishment more than anything. And just think, if you ever do a version 2.0 it will take half the time and probably turn out better
Yea, thats what I tried to bring across in the video. If you like this sort of thing, its worth it. If you cant fabricate, or if youre not all that interested in learning... Maybe buy the kit.
Thoroughly enjoyed the video, it was helpful and informative. Your trials and tribulations have helped me come up with a couple of ideas on how to create my own "intake air box". I've always wanted to free up space in the engine bay for other mods. Thank you!
I am glad to hear that my pain and frustration is benefitting others. :D I toyed with the idea of 3d printing a box. If you have access to a 3d printer maybe that'd be an option.
Im thinking i might just use a hole saw through the firewall and put rubber bulb seal (like used around doors) to hold the filter in place. It might draw a little air from the engine bay, but the majority will come from the cowl.
this would probably work. i wanted to be able to be able to access the filter from under the hood though. which is why i made the box and access door. there’s also the matter of clearance there’s not as much room under there as you might think.
Yea! Shaping it was so much easier, but attaching things was a challenge. I need a lighter duity welder, or maybe just thinner wire. Ill need to do some experimentation.
Reusable air filters are not a good to use if your are off road, they allow more smaller dust particles to get into your intake , wix paper air filters are the way to go they have the best filtration media, speaking from experience
I have over 200K on my reusable. Not sure what test you have done to show they don't last. Maybe you tested to 400k, that would make more sense I guess.
Lol! Sometimes it feels that way! I did it because I wanted to see if I could, and share it with all of you. If this video simply serves as a warning, so be it. ;) Maybe I can convince THOR to send me a commission for anyone who buys their kit after watching this. :D
It's some bluetooth obdII reader from amazon, i dont even remember the make. I'll have to go look to be certain, theres nothing special about it. The app though, that's whats important. This is Torque on my android tablet.
There are several reasons why. And I built it so you can remove as little as possible to clean the filter. Under the hood you remove the panel on the box i built, then disconnect the intake tube from the throttle body. the entire tube and filter should then come free and you can clean the filter. Yes, its more work than stock, but ive also moved my intake to a safer location, out of the hot engine bay, and it should get less trail dust. Everything's a trade off. As for how "smart" it is? *shrug* to each their own. This is a very similar build to the THOR kit, which a lot of people love.

Nice video, thanks for the links in the description. I'm definitely gonna take inspiration from your project and see what comes out of it on my XJ
Awesome thanks for watching! Good luck on your project!

Working with sheet metal is a whole different ball game. I'm starting to have fun with it.

@@SWBCrawler you just need more practice. My 220v welder does a much better job than my little 110v Lincoln.
Nice video!
Thanks!

Random question. What is the Bluetooth reader that you're using that'll give you all of that data?

Would you like test our mig machine?
Hey, sorry for missing your reply here. I may be interested.
@@SWBCrawler ok,i will email to you

Why? In order to Clean Filter you will have remove everything. Not Smart at all!

Please don't laugh as I don't have any hole saws. Are Hole Saws direction?
Do you mean are they directional? Yes they are made to cut with the drill in the forward rotation. Clockwise i guess? or every one i’ve used has been.
