Dont get me wrong MC of course has a good voice but I wish Martha would finally get the recognition she deserves. Talent has nothing to do with how thin or big a person is.
Mariah - Lighter voice, amazing resonance for how light it is, beautiful tones and complex runs and agility. Martha - Heavier voice, fantastic resonance and not by force, womanly gospel tone and beautiful head voice. Both are incredible, in their distinctive ways. Mariah is my all time favorite, but Martha is amazing too.
MY GOD Mariah's different textures of her voice are just beauty to any ear. The way she goes from strong to soft without a moments breath is just astonishing. But Martha does also does have that beautiful powerful voice. They both are magnificent.

LaMont B. I think it's more just that there's a difference in voice types than anything else. Martha is like a dramatic soprano with a bigger and more sustainable voice while Mariah is a lyric coloratura with a lighter, more flexible voice.
Lows go to Mariah but Martha has a great lower register too. Mid belts are a tie - Mariah as a solid voice and good resonance here but so does Martha, while Martha takes the upper belts for sure as she has a naturally bigger voice. Head voice is a tie - Mariah uses more falsetto but has a nice head voice, while Martha's is fuller and she gave Mariah a run for her money with that F6 run in head voice (Mariah's was a whistle).

WOW. I need to go to bed but I HAD to click on this. These two are part of a very elite class of powerful voices. It's one thing to belt "on pitch" and another to like, make the pitch have an orgasm. I mean just... makes my jaw drop every time.
Does Martha get points for preserving her voice all these years and still being able to perform live? Neither Mariah or Whitney achieved this. Sad to say but it is the truth. Something about the fame. Sad. Team Martha!
rochiggidy Well yeah but Mariah has been singing with nodules for years while Whitney's declined to drugs, smoking and overworking. Plus Martha - who does't perform as much as both of them - has the bigger and naturally more sustainable voice like Patti Labelle's (both dramatics).
+Edward E No? They both have tremendous power in the upper register and are most comfortable in the highest soprano tessitura, they both have that similarly dramatic, metallic-like timbre (Patti's is more pronounced) and have a darker timbre than the average soprano (most of which are light lyrics these days). Martha certainly has a far bigger voice than a standard full lyric, she's not a coloratura soprano and she isn't a spinto either since she has more power and volume output than one and her timbre is more akin to a true soprano than a mezzo (which is what most spintos sound like)... If they're not the same voice type then do explain? I'm interested to know your thoughts but there's no point just saying they're not the same then not elaborating.
Patti is not comparable with Birgit Nilsson, Kirsten Flagstad or Jessye Norman the way Martha is. How can you give someone a vocal fach based on powerful dramatic singing alone Shirley Verrett could sing both dramatic and spinto roles but was considered a Falcon or Mezzo. Patti has a powerful voice but there is nothing dark about Patti's voice compared to a dramatic soprano, I believe she is a spinto because her voice sits between the lyric and dramatic and I note that spintos can sing dramatic roles

Please, both aren't 20 anymore, it's not like martha is still hitting all the top notes. People milk talented people for all its worth and are suprised that they leave with little less
For me, I don't know much of Martha's music other than it's raining men. From listening to her from these clips, she puts me in the mind of Jennifer holiday, another power singer. So as follows, with low notes it's a tie eventho the music isn't as clear as today I could still hear her vocals on the lows and they were very clear and strong. As far as the belts are concerned, that is based on the individuals taste. If you are going by strong, powerful gospel voice then you would choose Martha but if you were going for strong, somewhat sultry, pop and R&B ish type of vocals, you would choose Mariah. For head voice again it's a tie but the whistle is Mariah hands down....she does it so effortlessly.
Everybody dance now (gonna make you sweat) is one of Martha's famous 90's dance tunes...she was cheated out of recognition for that song and many others because she didn't have the 'right image' ....disgraceful really! She's amazing and a powerhouse! Love Martha ❤
I like Mariah and always have but...Martha Wash & Donna Summer have stronger more powerful textured voices hands down. Especially live...That does not take away from what Mariah had but is slowly losing. She once closely rivaled Whitney but now now. We all know the late Whitney destroyed hre vocal perfection with drugs. Martha is older and can out sing Miss Carey as could Donna in her early 60's , before her untimely death.
Great vid Murt! Um Mariah Wins On Lows and Belts Although Martha put up a great fight. Headvoice goes to Martha Hers was stronger and richer to me. Overall Winner - Songbird Supreme
Pretty cool comparsion and the winner here is clearly Mariah in all registers, her voice has a special tone while hitting notes, which is untouchable. Martha is a great singer with a strong uniqe vibrato (the only strong vibrato I like^^) she is my favorite Ghostsinger of all time ;) ps.finally somebody used the song "Imperfect" for the lower notes, I like ;)
@BrenTheGorgeous Ok, that came out wrong. What I was trying to say is that Mariah is more resonant in the upper chest than most other singers, including Martha
Mariah was really going for those studio notes because in live singing Martha's voice seems so much heavier and darker. BTW how come didn't I hear F5 from "Everybody dance now"? :)
ksionc100 You are right. But the problem is there are really few live videos of Martha singing in the 80’s and the 90’s so that you could really hear the same notes as in studio. Her range has been getting lower with age. But she still has a wonderful voice.
Oh! Oh! Oh! New Video :) Or am I late? I thought this was Adele and I got excited, but it's not lol xD. Never heard of her before. I love Mariah's low notes. Mariah's tone is just perfect or should I say Imperfect... oh wait, that wouldn't work :P Mariah wins for me, of course xD

Have u heard Martha now compared to Mariah now Mariah would wash her but Martha is doing good for her age💁🏻♂️
Great vid Murt!
Um Mariah Wins On Lows and Belts Although Martha put up a great fight. Headvoice goes to Martha Hers was stronger and richer to me.
Overall Winner - Songbird Supreme
@WhitneyElizabethH
Yes, she's a flop because she died, but when she was alive she was amazing
Just checked - she was along with Black Box (strike it up is such a good song)
@ThePianoguy89 No problem, thanks for the 'like' :)
@sentfromupabove what song is on 8:25 please tell me
Pretty cool comparsion and the winner here is clearly Mariah in all registers, her voice has a special tone while hitting notes, which is untouchable.
Martha is a great singer with a strong uniqe vibrato (the only strong vibrato I like^^) she is my favorite Ghostsinger of all time ;)
ps.finally somebody used the song "Imperfect" for the lower notes, I like ;)
Mariah is not a clear winner here.
PEOPLE HAVE THEIR FAVS! I Prefer ,Miss Wash!! All day, every day!! Love her!!
Why so many C5s and E5s? Are all these songs in C major?
1st G#5 - Loverboy 2nd G#5 - Theres Got To Be A Way
MARTHA
@BrenTheGorgeous Ok, that came out wrong. What I was trying to say is that Mariah is more resonant in the upper chest than most other singers, including Martha
Maríah of course
Tone : Mariah
Head voice : Martha
Mariah was really going for those studio notes because in live singing Martha's voice seems so much heavier and darker. BTW how come didn't I hear F5 from "Everybody dance now"? :)
ksionc100 You are right. But the problem is there are really few live videos of Martha singing in the 80’s and the 90’s so that you could really hear the same notes as in studio. Her range has been getting lower with age. But she still has a wonderful voice.
Wow
Mariah all the way!!!!!!
Martha always

I thought this was Adele and I got excited, but it's not lol xD. Never heard of her before.
I love Mariah's low notes. Mariah's tone is just perfect or should I say Imperfect... oh wait, that wouldn't work :P Mariah wins for me, of course xD
