Ross, you're insane bro. I've spent the last 6 months starting up my own production company and this info has been a huge help. Your channel is also growing so fast you're gonna pass me in the next couple days, but you totally deserve it! Just subscribed after binging like 5 videos haha.

Fair play, this is great content. I’m a TV Director and started doing videography in lockdown and my next move I think is start a production company. This video was really spot on 👌
Great video. I only disagree with two points. The gear absolutely matters, and so does your website. I think using Instagram as a portfolio is the same as having a gmail account. Otherwise great video! Been in business since 1996
Hey! Totally appreciate your point on this 👌 from my experience it hasn't been the case with the website but with equipment how I should have worded it was, equipment matters but latter... most people get in debt before they have a client to pay for the gear, which isn't a good way to start a company 👌😊 I really appreciate the comment and congrats on having a business for so long! That's awesome 🔥

Hi from Melbourne Australia Ross! The content your putting out is great and super valuable, thank you! Would love to hear more on 1. Outreach examples/success stories. 2. Marketing. 3. Different types of services to offer. Thanks again for the great content!
Hey James! Great to speak with you. Thanks so much for the comment and content ideas! I've added those to my list so I will cover these in the next few videos 🔥. I did a video not too long ago about "the number 1 platform for outreach on", if you haven't seen it, that will be a good one to get you warmed up!!
I just subscribed and I'm glad I did. I just started my own business doing Graphic Design and Video Production. I just got a project where I'm going to be making a UA-cam channel and filming 5 P.S.A.s for a local non-profit and I happen to run into this video while researching on how to run your first production. I appreciate your style and your honesty.
Thanks for the information. I am just starting my own production company. I was making so many of the mistakes that you spoke about. Going to reflect on them and do my best to improve.
This was brilliant Ross, I am a one man band as a freelancer, something I struggle with is imposter syndrome or selling my services, completely just pluck a number out the sky to get the client...
Valuable video. Just one point to add about equipment. Equipment matters to some extent. If we show some fancy equipment clients think we are having a quality production though it doesn’t matter a lot for production companies. And you are right about burning money on equipment isn’t a sustainable way.
XD I'm doing my due diligence in preparing to start my business and next to the tab where I'm taking my notes is my business plan document. Good to feel ahead of the game before the info came through your video. Great work though I appreciate all this information.
Thank you for this, before I watched your video I was going to stop doing paid work for the next two months until I received my new camera. You made me realize that I am not my camera and I can still pull performance out of a Nikon from 2006 until the new one arrives.

Fantastic video! Such amazing and well spoken information. Just the video I needed to watch at this particular point in my life. Much appreciation for really taking the time to explain these 10 points in such detail.
Greetings from Arizona! Just found your channel! I recently moved out here to pursue my media career. Your videos are very informative and stoked to see more!

Fantastic video Ross! Just subscribed. I'm currently working as an assistant for a production company called Visual Eye. It's slowly progressing but i'm itching to get stuck into my own stuff. These tips are amazing.
Hey!! Thank you so much for reaching out. You are more than welcome and I'm glad the video helped. It's great to see you investing in your business knowledge before making the jump - I'm sure you'll smash it! Is there anything in particular that you would like to see on the channel which would help you more??
@@RossWelch Appreciate you taking the time to reply! Have to admit after binging your videos you have a serious amount of quality content here. Pretty much answering all of my questions! As for myself, I don't usually feel comfortable approaching new clients (i'd prefer to leave the networking to someone else if I could haha) but it has to be done. Could you possibly dive deeper into how you handle a new client from start to finish? Thank you Ross for your honesty, I would like to know about your experience putting together a team, It has been the hardest part of the projects I've been working with.
You're welcome! It takes time but if you can build up a freelancer matrix that works well. See this video for a bit more on that: ua-cam.com/video/OJk7ReY74rE/v-deo.html
I guess it's also important to decide what gear we need in the house, and what's better to be rented. And if we use it really often, it's probably still better to lease expensive gear instead of buying.
Great information. I invested in some gear, and editing software. I’m trying to fine tune my craft before I create my LLC, considering I’m a woman in a men dominated business, the pressure is on 👽
Brilliant video. Almost all points resonate with me and the current/past state that me and my business is/was in. Subbed. Gonna watch more of your content when I get back home 😁

Really nice video I subscribed immediately man your chanel can help me big time. I am exactly at the beginning of turning my hoby into a business. Thanks and keep the great work
Hey Ross, This content is actually awesome. I am in the process of launching a business and I have been lucky enough to get a couple of mentors early on. These tips are super helpful and align with the other experts I have been in contact with. So you must be doing something right. :) I hope I can get the ball rolling and have the ability to keep pushing through the dips. As you said, your why is the most important thing.
Okay! I subscribed, your content looks very useful and you seem so genuine and honest! Can you make a video on how to and what to charge? Also do you mentor or give lessons?

with all respect to the bro code I LOVE YOU BRO your so well spoken and relatable and speak with such deliverance if i even used the word in the right context which im pretty sure it is not lol but you catch my drift thanks for the video ima watch all of your videos and leave honest comments
Hey Ross! Would appreciate an advice or even a video for this question: beginner filmmaker makes not bad videos, not worst than other locals make, got some portfolio and ready to step in and make money, how to reach out first paid clients? Maybe some examples of communication… for example I made couple videos for local companies and reached managers with ready videos and proposal to work in the future together, but they did not answer🤣 I’m pretty sure you’ve been there when started. Thank you
Hey dude!! Thanks for the comment. Yes absolutely! I've been there before! Outreach is 100% a numbers game. You have to speak to a lot of people before you get some sales. I did a video a while back that's still good advice : ua-cam.com/video/HyuQQ44acM4/v-deo.html Take a look and hopefully it'll help! I'll also revisit this for a new video at some point too 👌
I like the idea of not spending money until I get it. I have had a real problem of spending money I got promised for future work to buy gear. From now on, I'll charge clients a gear fee before I do the job so I don't get into debt.
Thanks a lot for valuable info mate ! I would love to hear some tips as of how to create a business plan 🙏🏼 If you already have it - I'll watch it in a sec 😁🙏🏼🖤
I think the website one does not matter on the website itself - but seo search, it you set that up well, it will give you business. A friends videography business had 40ish percent of the work come through the website
Hey Ross, great video with so much value. I wanted to let you know that the enrollment page on your teachable academy platform is not working currently. Looking forward to learning more from you!
Hi Ross! First off, awesome content. It really helps me grow me business and i'm creating my freelance matrix right now. I wonder if you have any videos regarding hiring your 1st employee and the process from recruiting the right person, expenses vs income, how to teach and motivate them and so on. It's kinda the state where I am at right now, so i'm just preparing everything I can before taking the next big step. Also i'm pretty busy atm and have been for last 6 month. This is without running any advertising what so ever. But I have a ad company ready to launch my ads on LinkedIn. I just don't wanna choke my self in work, so i'm looking into how to expand.
Hey! That's absolutely awesome that you're looking to expand your business!! I don't have a video on that yet but I've added it to my list!! 😁👌 Maybe check out this one.. ua-cam.com/video/3X9ty10Cx8o/v-deo.html
Hey Ross. I am watching you for first time but you give really good advices. I have a question. How do you make up a name for a new Video Production company? And if I live in a country where the native language is not english, is it still a good option to choose an universal Brand name including english keywords but not in the native language where we are working at? What do you think?
Hey! I'm glad you love the content!! I would name the company according to the country most of your clients are in 👌 there's no set rule for this but maybe consider your favourite colour followed by favourite animal 😁
Man....today have learnt alot.....Am from Kenya 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪 Africa and my issue was to get a good equipment Although I have to buy at least a camera since i use just a phone.....anyway Good studies have found in this channel and i have Subscribed for more content.....🙏🙏🙏🙏
I disagree with that “ in showbiz you need to show that . I shoot music video . I used Sony A7R4 for both photos and video . So for small budget video it’s okay . But if you hit a 10k music video client and you show up on set with just a camera and gimbal, what will be there reaction. Before waiting for the output they will judge you !!! Plus if you rig up the same camera and put matte box filter , a monitor , some reflectors , black flags , some c stands . Singer will have more confidence . Because they see the setup before the final video . That my personal experience . These days phone camera te more versatile and you have stabilisers for phone , you can achieve similar looking video , but will a client pay u 10k for a video shot on an iPhone ?
Hey dude! Great point and tbf... I totally agree. I guess for a lot of people they don't think of it I'm that way, and instead break the bank trying to get cameras they can't afford. You've clearly got a good understanding of how clients think and how to make what you've got, work for you 🔥🙌🎥
Hey!! Yes 100% focus on getting clients and then keeping them! This is an older video but super valuable and will help you out... ua-cam.com/video/HyuQQ44acM4/v-deo.html
Hey Ross, I've fallen in love with creating videos last year when I started my UA-cam channel, but now like to expand this to clients as well. I'm binging all of your videos because they are so packed with valuable information, but if there would be one thing that is holding me back, it would be the insecurity to steer people and situations during shoots. I'm a little scared of the possibility that my creativity will let me down in the moment itself and that it'll come across as unprofessional towards the client. Would you have any tips on this? Is this something that sounds relatable to you? Thank you in advance!
Hey! That's totally normal but you have to take that first step! Clients will look to you for advice and to lead as you're the expert in the field. That means that you can pretty much suggest anything see what they think and then go from there. It's a scary step to take but you'll regret not doing it and you wont get better otherwise 👌
I really appreciate your suggestions,I saw your channel growing so fast I shoot one music video but the quality is not good, please give me a suggestion so that I will improve next

I’m glad I got my head on right and already knew these things when I’m barely starting lol
👌 on the right track 🙌🎥
with all respect to the bro code I LOVE YOU BRO your so well spoken and relatable and speak with such deliverance if i even used the word in the right context which im pretty sure it is not lol but you catch my drift thanks for the video ima watch all of your videos and leave honest comments
😂🤘👌 bro code!
I'm glad you liked the video dude! Really appreciate the support 🙏🏼
Awesome Ross thank you!!
You're welcome 😊
I did a video a while back that's still good advice : ua-cam.com/video/HyuQQ44acM4/v-deo.html
Take a look and hopefully it'll help!
I'll also revisit this for a new video at some point too 👌
thank you man! really appreciate this.
All good Charlie! 🔥
This is great content. Very valuable information
I'm glad you like it 😊 I really appreciate the support!
Fantastic stuff man!
Thanks dude!
I like the idea of not spending money until I get it. I have had a real problem of spending money I got promised for future work to buy gear. From now on, I'll charge clients a gear fee before I do the job so I don't get into debt.
👊
Really enjoying your channel!
Thank you, hope it is of value to you!
Thanks a lot for valuable info mate !
I would love to hear some tips as of how to create a business plan 🙏🏼
If you already have it - I'll watch it in a sec 😁🙏🏼🖤
Hey! I have one for photography we was a few weeks back but not yet for videography. They are similar but I'll add it to my list 🙏🏼🙌
Some great tips here, thanks!
Very Good points. Businesses should also be quicker to spend money on advertising than gear too.
Yes! 🔥🙌
Great video. Thank you so much for your insight! Would love to work with you someday.
🔥 you're welcome! Who knows! Maybe some day 😁
Thanks for sharing this valuable info. Saludos from Monterrey México.
You're welcome 😊 🔥
Is true,Thank you for your supoport
🔥🙏🏼
I think the website one does not matter on the website itself - but seo search, it you set that up well, it will give you business. A friends videography business had 40ish percent of the work come through the website
Very true, Seo is also important, its just most people forget about it to keep updating etc. Nonetheless still a good asset to any growing brand 🔥
Hey Ross, great video with so much value. I wanted to let you know that the enrollment page on your teachable academy platform is not working currently. Looking forward to learning more from you!
Hey! Thanks so much for the heads up! I'll take a look into that 😊 really appreciate you stopping by and glad you enjoyed the video!
Maybe check out this one..

Super valuable info ! Thanks for sharing Ross
Thanks Dylan! 🔥 appreciate the support dude!

Great video. Liked & subscribed. Best wishes.
Thanks so much!
After your first production should you have your own business contacts e mail and business land line or before you do your first production?
Ideally before or maybe just after 👌 just do it sooner than later
You’re putting out insanely good content man thank you 🙏🏼
You're very welcome Sean!
Well done! Genuine, wise and well-said. Thank you!
I'm really glad you liked it 🔥
I disagree with that “ in showbiz you need to show that .
You've clearly got a good understanding of how clients think and how to make what you've got, work for you 🔥🙌🎥
This helps sooo much! Just one question for ya, what would suggest for someone trying to start up in an area with very little to none media coverage?
Hey! Humm... its tricky. It might mean that everyone needs it but it might be worth trying that and other areas too so that it's less risky 😊
@@RossWelch Thank you!
If you had one advice on getting started, what would it be? My main question would be on getting those first clients.
Hey!! Yes 100% focus on getting clients and then keeping them!
This is an older video but super valuable and will help you out... ua-cam.com/video/HyuQQ44acM4/v-deo.html
@@RossWelch thank you! 😁👍
Valuable Information!
Thanks dude! 😊

Hey Kristian! I'm glad you liked the video 🔥 let me know if there is anything else you'd like to see on the channel 🤘
Great content!
Thank you!!
Good Video Ross. Very useful infos here.
🔥🔥🔥🔥 thanks guys!
I really appreciate your suggestions,I saw your channel growing so fast
I shoot one music video but the quality is not good, please give me a suggestion so that I will improve next
Hey! For music videos, you need to have lots of different angles and types of shots. That way it keeps viewers engaged 😊🙌
@@RossWelch thanks
What type of camera we need to use
