The entire Crime of the Century album is a masterpiece! Released in 1974, it clearly influenced Pink Floyd's The Wall, which was released five years later in 1979. Crime of the Century is one of those unique and special start-to-finish albums where you are mesmerized and lost in the wall of sound. Incredible!
I share your amazement and excitement for the unique sound quality of Supertramp...it all started for me in 1975 in my university dorm hearing Crime of the Century played next door.
If you have 40 minutes, listen to the album Crime of the Century in its entirety in order, just 8 songs that are threaded together that tell the story of Rudy...not supposed to be a concept album but you be the judge...it is brilliant, not always uplifting but amazingly produced and worth listening to at least once in a lifetime
Rudy is one of their best off their best album. Interesting train and train station effects. Some don't like 'Crisis what crisis' but I think it's a good second. Well done for not interrupting much.
Hi Angela, you're all forgiven for not paying attention to the lyrics: the music is multi-layered and so good! 💥Basically, the song is about Rudy, a man who dreams his life away and waits for things to happen instead of taking charge of his destiny. As you said, it takes more than just one listen to appreciate it. But I'm glad you picked it (it's my favourite Supertramp song). Cheerio!🐝
I will remember it always I was in the back in my car laying down with a joint in my hands listening to that song my friend maaan that was a ride exceptional song
Crime of the Century sold 50000 copies in the city of Winnipeg the year it came out. Super tramp was a underrated band that put out 4 great albums. Glad you liked it. :)
Thanks, DayOne! this is a great song.. I always felt like "School" was my favorite by Supertramp, but the more I go back, this may be even better.. so close! What a brilliant band with incredibly balanced musicianship, and great changes... appreciate your reaction and look forward to more...
We've all been there. It's the best song on an amazing album. Every song on "Crime Of The Century" is a gem. "Hide In Your Shell" is another highlight - or - "If Everyone Was Listening"
For me, Supertramp is and always will easily be one of the top 5 best bands of the 1970s..and of all time for me... with the others being Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes and Rush... all followed of course, by the Beatles, but they broke up in 1970. You could react to every song on every one of Supertramp's first four albums, and they would all make for great reactions. Supertramp is a more than worthy rabbit hole! But if anything, Billy Joel was following Supertramp's lead, not the other way around.
Crime of the Century album was (and still is) a masterpiece way ahead of it's time. It deserves to be held in the same reverence as Dark Side of the Moon. They were brilliant at creating concept albums. You really need to listen to this album in full from start to finish in the dark with a good set of headphones and let yourself drift away with the story.
A suite type of composition, all about a day in the life of Rudy..very creative. But no one could ever say they lacked imagination..2nd vocal was Rodger Hogdson, the Band's keyboardist/guitarist/2nd lead singer. The Police weren't a band yet, but ironically, they'd also be signed by A&M records around late '76.
Rodger is not "the lead singer", there many songs with Rick Davies as lead singer. Not to open a "box of Pandora" here, but I'm somewhat more into the voice of Rick (of course that's all personal).
@FredtheFrisian well, let's see, I have reread my comment several times, and I still don't see anything there about me saying he was the lead singer for Supertramp. I said he was the lead singer on The Logical Song and many other great Supertramp songs. This wasn't intended to be in favor of him and against Rick. I like both of them.
Great reaction, Ang!! If you are only two songs in to your Supertramp journey you have so much excellent music ahead of you!! Start with this LP, Crime of the Century, then do Crisis? What Crisis? followed by Even In The Quietest Moments. Not a bad song on any of them, and all reaction worthy!! This album came out in 1974 and Billy Joel did not get started until 1977 I believe, so while the piano bits might be similar they were definitely not influenced by him, at least not until many years later. "School" should be next!
The 19.45 train for Bristol Templemeads, will depart from platform two, calling at Reading, Didcot, Swindon, Chippenham, Bath Spa and Bristol Templemeads. Passengers for Radley, change at Didcot. (Train leaving London Paddington heading west)
One of Rick's very best songs, top 5 I'd say of the Davies-penned Supertramp songs, at least. Saw them do this in concert in 1983 and it was powerful as a locomotive.
Don't stop there! This song is part of one of the finest produced rock LP ever. The opening song "School" is epic as are every song from Crime of the Century
One of my favourite bands, another good song from them here, so musical and great invention. You should check out' Take the long way home' which is just great, maybe someone will suggest it in future!-Colin Ward
Good reaction, and fun to see you enjoy this song. Supertramp released this song on their classic album, Crime of the Century in 1974, the year after Billy Joel released Piano Man, his first LP (and the year after Dark Side of the Moon). Not sure if they would have heard Piano Man before recording this. Supertramp had two lead singers, Roger Hodgson (high voice, guitars, keyboards) and Rick Davies (lower voice, keyboards). By the way, Sting released his first album as the lead singer and bassist of The Police in 1978, four years after Crime of the Century appeared.
The voice you heard that sounds like Sting is that of Roger Hodgson. He's the one that sings the Logical song, he's a solo artist now. The main singer on this song is Rick Davies.
Such a great band. It is easy to get so involved with their music that you miss the lyrics. That is why re-play is such a nice feature. Again and again and again.
I was interrupted on my 1st comment, but now I can elaborate! The beginning reminds me of Al Stewart! You know, the artist who sings the amazing masterpiece of a song Year Of The 🐈😺 Cat! This song does take you on a journey! There are a few songs in this category that I dig a lot, such as Can't Get It Out Of My Head 🗣️ by ELO! Roundabout by YES, and a few others, but the best one in my opinion, the full version of Nights In White Satin by The Moody 💙 Blues! Bye fellow music lovers!
You can't go wrong with Supertramp, anything off albums 3-8 range from great to amazing. There are some gems on their first two albums as well. How about "Child of Vision", the closer from their biggest album (6th) , "Breakfast in America"
Billy Joel released his first solo album in 1971, then his second Piano Man in 1973, I don’t think they sound like him at all, but just for the record.
Lol it's phone worthy regardless of the lyrics. The lyrics are nothing to worry about. You like their audio effects so listen to Fools Overture, it a masterpiece.
you should talk out loud during the song playing tell us your thoughts, a lot of other reactors do. we can't lip read :p . Take a Poll and ask us if we would like u to give us your thoughts during the song :)
You like the Carpenters, right? React to Superstar - Leonid & Friends (a Carpenter's cover). You will not be disappointed. Thanks. I enjoy your reactions. They cover numerous, famous groups, Chicago, etc.
Billy Joel first solo album was released in 1971, his second Piano Man in 1973, I don’t think they sound like each other at all, but just for the record straight.
YEAH ANGELA, THE WHOLE ALBUM IS LIKE THAT FOR SURE, YOU'D GET INTO IT MOST LIKELY! 👍😊OF COURSE THE 2 BIG HITS ON IT WERE : BLOODY WELL RIGHT & DREAMER AND THE STARTING OF THE ALBUM WHICH IS : SCHOOL 😊
HEYYYYYY GIRL! 😊 HI ANGELA, THIS WAS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE SONG OFF OF THEIR 74 GEM ALBUM ( CRIME OF THE CENTURY )👍LUVVVVV IT❤😊JUST AWESOME PRODUCTION LEVELS THESE GUYS WERE 💯, ESPECIALLYYYY ON THEIR PRE BREAKFAST STUFF! BE GOOD

Absolutely less know to this newer generation. A must for the phone the whole album every song on it!

Totally agree on "crisis, what crisis?" It's an underrated album.

Wonderful music ok fantastic!! Thanks Angela
I think you'll enjoy that journey even more after a second listen. I still love it after my umpteenth listen.
One of my faves from them.
I will remember it always I was in the back in my car laying down with a joint in my hands listening to that song my friend maaan that was a ride exceptional song

Very successful across Canada in the 1970s, from Crime of the Century through Breakfast in America. Still have the vinyl of those LPs.
"School" on the same album has an amazing piano interlude.
Thanks, DayOne! this is a great song.. I always felt like "School" was my favorite by Supertramp, but the more I go back, this may be even better.. so close! What a brilliant band with incredibly balanced musicianship, and great changes... appreciate your reaction and look forward to more...

Really great song by a superb, talented band!! 😅

Where does ELO fit into your list?

Love how, after the sounds of a train station, the guitar makes us think of a train rolling along. So prog-rocky.

If you've enjoyed the last 2 supertramp songs you're going to love "Goodbye Stranger" 👍
My Fav on this Album, but I love the entire lp.❤😊 50 years of listening next year. Sad but Beautiful song.
The higher register vocal was from Rodger Hodgson, the lead singer on The Logical Song and many other great Supertramp songs.

Sorry to be pedantic (you know how much UA-cam hates misinformation), but trains to Bristol leave from London Paddington, not Waterloo. 🚝GB

New song to me! Pretty cool tune! Until next time!
A progressive rock masterpiece

And I think I heard a strong influence from the Moody Blues in this.

Please listen to the whole album crime of the century in order.
Watch the video of Rudy.
Probably Billy Joel influenced by Supertramp , he would have still been at school when this came out
Billy Joel first solo album was released in 1971, his second Piano Man in 1973, I don’t think they sound like each other at all, but just for the record straight.
