Thank you. It always gives me a buzz when someone much more knowledgeable than me takes the time to watch and comment on one of my videos. Much appreciated! Fingers crossed on these azaleas.
Those azaleas are fantastic for budding back on old wood. I’ve taken them back to their main structure, no branches, and they’ve bounced right back. They’re both set up nicely for the growing season. Good luck. Thanks, keep growing
Thanks Matt. I'm glad to hear this as I was a bit unsure if I had gone a bit too far with them. My dwarf rhododendron from a previous video has really started pushing loads of new growth though so that gave me confidence.
Excellent! Just be ready for a root mass that is impossible to separate. You have to pretty much cut it like a birthday cake. I have another plant with two trees in it which I'll cut apart, so if you can wait a few days I'll do it this week. Also, I'm sure you know, but they must be planted in ericaceous compost.
@@TonysBonsai yes I did know about the ericaceous compost. And when I brought it I thought that I would just take it out of store pot and put it in one slightly bigger so saw the root ball then. So I'm expecting a game Do you watch backyard bonsai? he's just been working on his. I dream of owning a saksuki.
I use a mix of pine bark, perlite, grit and compost, so instead of ordinary compost, I just substitute in ericaceous. I also changed the percentages a bit and add a little extra compost and a little less perlite (Perlite is mildly alkaline). It's hard to get it into the roots, but I just teased them out as much as possible and then chopsticked the new substrate in.
I gotta say. I was watching both your trees and thinking about what branch I would remove. On the first one, I thought about cutting that long straight branch from the beginning and you finally removed it at the end. And for the second tree, as soon as you talk about that brach being too big, I thought "chop the trunk right there". I really like your videos, keep doing this! Looking forward to seeing the results, you need to do more updates! Cheers! From 🇨🇦
Hi Pierre. Yes I should update more, but I will definitely be updating these in the spring when they flower and then obviously I will be doing more work on them after that. I can tell you that they are doing great and had a really strong year with lots of growth. Glad you're enjoying my videos.
I look forward to seeing a follow video on these trees. I have azaleas in my Japanese garden in cloud style, so interested to see how they develop as bonsais.
brave cut, but i agree, i try and get 'reject' trees or shrubs so i can experiment on them rather than being scared of something i have paid a lot for. i am currently waiting for an azalea to finish flowering so i can try and make a semi cascade out of it.
Hi Kerry. A cascading azalea sounds fantastic. Great idea! You sound like you have a similar approach to bonsai as me. Get stuck in and experiment. It's the best way to learn. I've got a very video tomorrow which is extremely experimental!
Very original styling on the 2e plant Tony! I would probably wire and bend the lower branch to a cascade. My first thought was to then cut the top branch, but the longer i looked at the tree the more i thought that it would look nice to keep the top branch in place. Would make a very original design, but thats only my idea (and i love cascades haha).
Thanks Michael, and some very interesting ideas you've got there! I'm just going to leave this now for the year to gain some health, but I am sure I will be adding wire at some point to make it more interesting.
lol. there was 1 day talking with some girl. she ask me what i like to do, so i proudly say i like bonsai the love of nature see them grow and devolop. and then she say to me. you just mistreat and harm them and not let them grow how the want to. LOL. this would give here a heartatack i think haha
ha ha, I would ask her what she eats, and how she can live knowing that she consumes all those plants that are murdered just so she can have avocado on toast!
Hi Simon, yeah I agree. these little projects are great fun! Seeing as I potted it on a few months ago, I will probably leave it for a year or so now, but I may well look at sorting the roots and getting it onto a larger pot spring 2024 perhaps.
@@TonysBonsai yesterday i realized that azalea started to budback. Some little buds on the trunk and in some branches, not all of the branches unfortunately, but we'll see.. i like to follow your channel beacause of your approach is very similar to mine. Study, try and learn. Thank you for sharing!!
Great news Andrea, and if the odd branch doesn't bud, then that will only add to the randomness in the tree which only nature can produce! Mine are still not showing anything, but it's still a bit too early for me to expect buds yet.
Tony...I am going to make a video when I trim my Azalea Tree..my tree is five years old. Tony I lived in Hawaii for five years, and I got to learn the art of bonsia and got paid to do it. After my blooms are dead I'll clip. I'll let you see my approach.
Here i go big cut comming up says nigel. Tony cuts and goes Booooom 👍🤣
🤣🤣 Love it. Pinned!
Just started bonsai and all this is very cool. Love your channel.
Thanks Jack, I really appreciate your comment. We can both learn as we go along!
listen to the end, thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤️👍 good luck friend
Thank you, and the same to you. Keep up the good work!
great video Tony, really enjoyed that. I'm sure both azaleas will turn into really good bonsai!

Tony, I brought an azalea with 5 small plants in( obviously to make it look like one big plant) you've inspired me to now split it and be drastic.

I dream of owning a saksuki.
Yes, I do watch his content. I find his videos really entertaining with his laid back style.
You'll own a Satsuki one day I'm sure!
@@TonysBonsai just another thought. If you are going to bonsai an azalea how do you introduce ericaceous soil into your bonsai mix?

I'll make sure I update when they start pushing out buds Rhys. Your azaleas sound nice, especially in the setting of a Japanese garden!
Thanks for tutorial, I expected more exciting vedios!

Thats radical but the idea of bonsai is often to break rules. Love it.
love these random finds... nothing to lose
when would you repot? next spring? or are you going to slip pot and let it develop for a few years?

how are these trees doing now Tony?
They're alive and doing well. I took them round to my parents the other day to go into the ground. I realised they would never fatten up in pots.
Good job! I did the same in my azalea three weeks ago ..still waiting for new buds🤗.. but sure she's going ti respond!🤞
Keep the faith, Andrea. I'm sure it will happen. Let me know when they start to show!

Sounds interesting Mark. I don;t really know a lot about azalea
Eh, I went on and cut both the limbs and the roots. Still waiting for any signs of growth :)
Fingers crossed Pawel. I think they need a few weeks to start to bud out properly.

Thanks for watching!
Where’s the update?? 😂
I'm sorry, but Tony' cancer returned and he's no longer in this world. 😢
I think it was a good choice but OUCH!
