  • This is the minimalist challenge - you're going to grab your lens & camera and make your way around your neighborhood and take some photos. Pye often does this exercise in his photography workshops to challenge his students to use minimal gear to get the shot and focus on the artistry rather than the gear.
Welcome to “Master Your Craft,” a photography educational series by SLR Lounge, exclusively on Adorama TV. From gear advice to in-depth instruction, our goal is to give you practical, real-world advice to help you master the craft of photography. Whether you’re a beginner just learning your camera, an amateur looking to become a pro, or a professional seeking inspiration, this is the series you’ve been looking for to help you become a better photographer.

Definitely doesn't hurt, but you still need to understand light and composition. Don't get me wrong, a beautiful model creates that visual interest that attracts the viewers eye, but a beautifully composed and lit photograph will keep them looking at the photograph.

35mm is my favorite focal length for portraits. I used to love 85mm but it got boring really quick since you are limited.

A 35 mm focal length is good for environmental portraits where you want to show the subject and a specific environment. For example, this lovely lady riding a bicycle on a trail.

  • @enduraman1

The problem when you get too far away from your subject with a 35 mm is it pushes that subject away and makes them look very small in the frame. This is where a longer focal length can help magnify the subject when you’re further away from it. however, if you’re looking to make the subject appear small and isolated then back to the shop 20 feet away with a 35 mm with nothing in the frame except for walls and ground will make that subject appear lonely and isolated.

    Interesting tutorial, as usual Pye.
Curiosity: Why are you using such "muddy colors" in the first 2 shots? Do you like it? could be my monitor showing me a too warm image.. I don't know. Often When I see new Canon results it seems to me too much in the warm yellow-brown side.
Let me know if you can. thanks

Been doing this in NYC for 20+ years. The difference is I let the Model decide where. Where she physically stops is the 'exact' location we get the photo. Sometimes one foot would be in the shade and the other would be in the sun. It was up to me to get a pro shot. Have fun.

The only way 35 mm is going to work well for a Portrait is if you want negative space for a magazine or advertisement. For example, you plan to use words or other product images with the photo. Otherwise, a longer lens is much better for portraits. For example, 85 mm 100 mm 200 mm are all superior for portraits than a 35 mm.
