I wonder if Hannibal had planned to Kill Abigail before Will said that. The look on Hannibal's face, as he realises Will is right and that he has changed him, are completely heartbreaking. He knows Will has betrayed him, but in that moment, he realises how much he has hurt him, and ultimaltey why he hurts Will just as much

The episode for this scene was amazing but the majority of the series focused on a meandering killer of the week plot with too much surrealist scenes. A nice scene doesn't make up for that, and not to mention it went down hill trying to tackle the red dragon plot.

    • @489Acresofwheat
      @489Acresofwheat 8 років тому +125

I would argue it's deeper than that; Dexter had a meandering 'killer of the week' plot, but the killers in Hannibal each had the effect of revealing information regarding Lecter's role as the Ripper and held opportunities of strengthening the viewer's understanding of character relationships. I agree to the extent that it became slightly repetitive through the course of seasons 1&2, but I definitely don't think they failed in their attempt to make a cohesive story line.

I find it so tragic that Hannibal never reached the success of Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. I can honestly say that it has been one of the most consistently outstanding shows I've ever seen. In a way I'm glad that it wasn't a massive publicised thing, but I wish it had survived. Still, they ended season 3 so perfectly.

The teacup analogy is quite fitting for the experience of watching this show or any great piece of art. You can never perfectly recapture the moment of your first experience with it, and any consecutive engagement is merely an attempt at recostructing the teacup in your mind. It goes from in moment appreciation to melancholy.

I finished the show almost a month ago and I can't stop thinking about it. More specifically, the teacup metaphor. It took a rewatch to finally understand that Abigail was the teacup, and some reddit browsing to learn about Hannibal's obsession with time reversal. I now think that while Hannibal tells Will he shatters teacups for Abigail, it was originally for Mischa. In a way, I think everyone he kills is a teacup. He feels compelled to murder people at his whims because deep down, he's waiting for proof that people can come back from death. He also refers to Will as a teacup in the very first episode, which is made more interesting by the fact Hannibal guts him in the season two finale, thus shattering him.
Mischa was the original teacup which shattered permanently, the people Hannibal kills are teacups he drops without care, Abigail was the teacup he only pretended to drop, and Will was the only teacup to shatter and come back together again.

Love that exchange, especially as Hannibal leaves and stops to let the rain cover him, like he's letting everything that happened wash away. Then he takes the jacket off the dying Alana and walks away. But it's WILLS jacket. I always saw that as a subtle way of showing that as much as Hannibal might want to, he can't let go of what happened, he can't go back to being who he was before.

This is the 1st time that I've ever felt like I belong in a cult. Simply because I found out there are others out there who also shed tears over couple of particular episodes in the Hannibal series. Nobody I know did. Nobody. Not even my own brother. And he's like, the TV show geek that I know. He's practically a TV show enthusiast. The one that has been introducing me to this show or that show, over the years.
I've recently watched the entire 3 seasons of Hannibal all over again. Back to back. And I was amazingly surprised that this time around, I found myself crying my heart out, literally sobbed, during and after, the Season 2 Final Episode. I was surprised actually, realizing how much this show, and that episode in particular, had touched me like it never did before. I was surprised because knowing that I had seen these three seasons before, couple years ago, and yet I don't remember crying at all, watching it. How the hell did I missed it??? But this time around.. man. And then when this particular scene was played again in Season 3, I cried again. Then, there's also this music.. I've always known that this series, "Hannibal", was one of a kind. Truly. No series after this had ever touched me so deeply. Not one. This was it. And as sorry as I was when I found out that it could only lasted for three seasons, but the recent rewatch made me to value the ending more than I ever did before. Should this show be picked up again by another network, man, I hope they can surpass beyond our expectation. The show may had only lasted for three seasons but damn, those were among the highest bar ever set throughout the history of TV show industry. That's my two cent.

Don't let your love for Hannibal cloud your judgment, Hannibal was a masterpiece, definitely deserved awards, Mads and Hugh were phenomenal, maybe the surreal scenes and exaggerated reality prevented that, or the glorification of a cannibalistic serial killer, or whatever reason it may be, but Game of Thrones is also a masterpiece, with bad ending, but it deserved every won award, and all the recognition.

@blizzardlizzard Well to be clear hannibal gave psilocybin to abigail and she dropped a tea cup and shattered it in season 1. When we all thought hannibal killed abigail he said he drops a tea cup to remind him of her and tries to bring those moments back when she was alive. The whole point of the tea cup is hannibal trying to bring back those moments with abigail and will because he cared and enjoyed moments with them. So bringing back them back together as a family in the season 2 finale felt like time reversed and the tea cup shattered came together (even tho he stabs will and cuts abigail's throat).

First of all, it's "the tea cup that I shattered DARED to come together" and to the person wondering about the tea cup the response above me is nearly right, only, Hannibal never meant the tea cup that Abigail shattered to be the one that he "puts together" as during that time he still had hope for Abigail and will and he even says to Abigail about not wanting this life for her and that he is sorry he has to "kill her" but then we find out later on he never did but eventually would kill her but anyway I digress, Hannibal's words to will are that he himself drops a teacup to see it shatter and that he's not happy when the teacup doesn't gather itself up! It's obviously a metaphor but I feel that it should be pointed out that you never actually see Hannibal drop the teacup only thing you do see is A teacup shatter after his dialogue with will and then the teacup gather itself together again after the talk they had about how much they loved Abigail and how sorry Hannibal was that he couldn't give back Abigail to Will! Yes Abigail does drop a teacup and it would only add more foreshadowing to an already stellar show but the teacup is dropped by Abigail on accident and literally only is a coincidence that it fits Hannibal's further on "metaphor".

+tom campbell I must confess, I did boycott Hannibal for quite sometime as I didn't want to sour what I had already experienced from both the books and the movie adaptations, However it's been my loss. And in quite a few ways it is similar to how Silence Of The Lambs first impacted me and many others, and that's being pleasantly surprised. A seriously underated TV show, and I cannot give it enough praise. Hell, I even got my missus into watching it and she dislikes these types of horror genres...

I'm having a chronic pain as I keep deliberately listening to this brilliant music, it's really a form of beauty that the negativity of the beginning stave comes to me while I'm in my bed or at work, it slides down all of your emotions as if you were none, and eventually leaves you with an inner peace, yeah dear, you're walloing in your mundane suffering, your sustainable act of loneliness.

I have as much undying love for this show as Hannibal and Will have for each other, and that's saying something... Just hearing Bloodfest again after all those years makes my heart clench.
In a world of constant remakes and continuations of shows that have been cancelled for many years, I just _refuse_ to believe that we'll never see season 4. And however long it takes, I'll always be right here... thinking about what a one-of-a-kind masterpiece Hannibal is and sobbing uncontrollably... :( :)

This series was amazing. Season 1 could not catch my attention, but fortunately I gave a second chance to Hannibal and I finished the s01. The Season finale was great, and Season 2 have been becoming more epic and epic. But episode 13 was truly a masterpiece. Few series moreover motion pictures could achieves such heights in emotions and complexity. The elegiac tone of the final episode was so perfect that Hannibal Season 2 have become one of my most favorite tv shows (among Twin Peaks, True Detective and Breaking Bad).
With the music, it was like a very tragic opera. I watched it again and again.

i really do understand the situation hannibal is in, i mean i know he is
a psychopath and a serial killer who eats people but lets not think
about that, the thing that makes me a litlle sad for him is that even
tho he is so cruel he was all alone all this time, there was no one he
could trully trully relate to, there was no one who could really
understand him, and then Will came in his life and even tho they had
their bad momments, in the end i think hannibal actually thought about
Will as his friend, maybe Hannibal was kinda getting happy maybe just a
litlle bit, like when he still had his litlle sister with him, alive and
with a pure smile, Mysha, maybe he thought he could be not so alone
anymore, and then when he stabed Will he realised that it was just
small, tiny happy dream, that could never come true, and that he will
always be alone, no one else, just him... that made me deppressed for
    days to be honest...

@@yeahyeah6457 that would have been such a perfect and happy ending for them. sadly, happy endings aren't always realistic. i think it was better to end this story in tragedy. after all, it is a huge metaphor; Hannibal being the Devil/an embodiment of evil and Will being mankind. falling in love with evil should be expected to end in tragedy.
