Hey Stan, I'm Al's daughter! I'm posting this here for my dad, as he 's refused to do any social media, so I get to do it for him! Here's what he asked me to post to you: Stan, I just wanted to say thanks for bailing me out on this one. I had considered doing it myself, but with my back having issues now and again, I didn't want to take the risk of messing it up moving and laying those blocks, and being down for a week while it straightens itself out. Here's a quick history just so you know how I got into the situation I did. Those 'original crap blocks' were there from when the original deck on the house, which was 6' deep by about 14' long, was expanded out a bit about 20 or so years ago, and the original 2' cinder block retaining wall from when the house was built was replaced by those, which were a definite improvement. As I had wanted an even bigger deck (in the end it'll be about 27'x27') I also wanted a bit more room under it, so I used my excavator and Progator and dug it back into the hill about 6-7', and the original contractor hauled it away. The plan with them was, to do a 2 level retaining wall, pulling out and palletizing the old wall, which I then cleaned up a bit, re-using them on the lower level (were they ideal? No, but they were functional, and the wall wasn't going to be that high, so I figured as they'd be locked in with the concrete pad at the bottom, and have a deck over the top shielding them from the worst of the rain, they'd be more than sufficient), and then using the 2+ pallets of the Keystones, that I had left over from when all the other retaining walls were built when my workshop went up over a decade ago, to finish it. This all started in the later fall of 2018, and unfortunately we got frozen out before the 2nd level could go in. I was promised that they would put me 1st on the schedule in the spring, but it was a wet one so I kept getting pushed back and pushed back, and finally around the 4th of July, they went Ghost on me.
Seeing as I really didn't want to mess my back up humping those things around, I'd contacted another contractor to finish it up, and was promised that by early fall (Sept?) they'd be back to whip it out for me. Unfortunately, they pulled the same crap, and winter came with no wall, no deck, and lots of tarps. I am Sick of tarps! lol So, as I'd seen some of Stans vids in the last year, I figured why not call him up and explain my tale of woe? I knew this was a tiny job to them, that's why I'd not bothered to call them in the first place, because I see them building 100' long, 25' high walls, and then take a look at my 12' by maybe 4' wall, and figured they would have no interest, especially since they were finishing up someone elses work. Well, turns out that since they'd helped me with my workshop build all those years ago, they had took mercy on me and sent me out Sam and Blaine to get this one put to bed. Tell you what, those guys were great, they knew that they were getting into it a little deep from the outset, as it started out with the 'concrete' base, but we worked past that pretty quickly, then it got to the leveling, they spent about a day getting that base row in properly, but by the end, it was about perfect! After that, it went pretty well, till we ran out of blocks. I did a bit of hunting around, using a few leads that Blaine had given me. I contacted a company that made these, and was actually told that they were still available. Slightly different, but basically the same tri face ones I had. So, I made the well over an hour drive up to the plant where they had them waiting for me loaded on a pallet along with the caps, and had them load them on my trailer without actually taking a close look at them. Drove over an hour back home, and then found out when I got there that they were actually the flat faced ones. I was struggling a bit at that point, didn't want to spend a couple hours running back and forth for the 'correct' ones, when Blaine came up with a great idea. Pull the 'normal' ones off the top row of the wall, and use them down at the fire pit wall as there were just enough to do it, and use the straight face ones up top, as they wouldn't be seen anyways. I thought that was genius, and contrary to Stans assessment, I think they turned out.. Ok! Unique, definitely, and actually, they will be exposed, as that section of the deck doesn't completely cover them, but regardless, they came out fine! Now, it's on to putting in the final 2 Sonotubes and pouring those along with the fire pit pad next, then filling and compacting around the larger Sonotube (long story, don't ask), and pouring the patio below the deck, and finally flying in the two 27' steel I-beams and laying the deck. It's going to be a busy summer around here, no doubt about it, but at least I have my retaining wall done properly, and my back is still in one piece. Sure can't wait till its done, though! Thanks Stan for your help with this one, I think it came out Great, and remember, Function before Form can be a good thing too! Al
@@Dirtmonkey Hey Stan, curious why you built a tiered wall as close to the wall below in this project. Asking because Ive watched many of your videos and I'm now familiar with your rule of thumb for the distance between walls is a tiered project. Thank you.

The person who builds something is usually their worst critic because they see and know all the flaws that are in the project. But once the project is finished, I bet you that most outsiders will never really see a big visual (or other) problem with these walls. They look at it from a distance and they will never see a problem. So don't you all be too harsh on yourself, you used what you had and it looks great!
Great example of a situation. It’s nice to see this, in a this is why you don’t do this or why a contractor will say we do it this way and here is the reason.

Love the videos and the energy of the crew. I have a question, I live in duluth and have a retaining wall about 3 feet high separating my backyard from a flat driveway space behind it. Currently there is a failing Railroad type tie as the wall. If i rebuild the wall in block, would I need geo grid or any type of reinforcement? Would the driveway and or cars parked on it count as a surcharge?

I really hope there is geogrid in the base layer because that upper wall is putting a weight surcharge on the lower wall. If you don't have geogrid to resist sideways pressure, you should give it double the height in a setback (e.g. a 4 foot tall wall should have 8 feet setback before the next wall) or it may push the lower wall down sooner than desired. But hey, it's done for a while at least.
Problem for me is that they "WERE" a customer. Obviously they chose to go with someone else. In some ways, they should understand that there would be issues and changes. Had they gone with you in the first place (as a customer) you would have done this right from the start.
Need some extra help been doing landscaping and alot of your type of handyman work for a while kinda feel like moving don't know where too tho 20 years old kinda hit a dead end in Nebraska or I feel like I have sometimes. Keep working hard
I never work for customers that say they had a contractor disappear on them so they decided to try do it themselves and then call me; red flag being that they probably didn’t value the job appropriately as a homeowner and treated the previous contractor like he was an idiot and then after firing him and realizing that they weren’t idiots at all because retaining walls can be difficult; he calls you to finish a half done job for less money. Scam artist customer in my eyes.

Problem for me is that they "WERE" a customer. Obviously they chose to go with someone else. In some ways, they should understand that there would be issues and changes. Had they gone with you in the first place (as a customer) you would have done this right from the start.
Dwayne should I just stole a couple inches of the crushed stone come up above and use it to set his base that’s all
Have you done a video on that vivarium, paludarium whatever you got going on in your living room? If so, link?

You live at the Great Wolf Lodge? Cool pad!
Hey at least the guy had decent equipment.
yes he did
my only question:
How is that “The Crow” shirt still alive?
You recognize that? Its from like 1984 or something
My wife had so many tee shirts that she probably had some from that era that had only been worn a few times. Also it was from 1994 👍

Need some extra help been doing landscaping and alot of your type of handyman work for a while kinda feel like moving don't know where too tho 20 years old kinda hit a dead end in Nebraska or I feel like I have sometimes. Keep working hard
keep at Timothy and never quite. Even when your backs against the wall and you feel like its a dead end. Never stop trying bud!
Working on a wall right now.
I like they are useing water
Can still plant some hardy climbing plants there. Cover it in green.
Ask a landscape guy what to plant.
Once the deck is over the retaining walls you will never see it .
Which blocks do you recommend for retaining walls?
Can you do a video on your fish tank one day
I never work for customers that say they had a contractor disappear on them so they decided to try do it themselves and then call me; red flag being that they probably didn’t value the job appropriately as a homeowner and treated the previous contractor like he was an idiot and then after firing him and realizing that they weren’t idiots at all because retaining walls can be difficult; he calls you to finish a half done job for less money. Scam artist customer in my eyes.
I have been there to . I feel for you
Hi stan, like your videos.
Could you put background footage when you're talking? After a few minutes it does get boring, especially at the start of the video. Maybe footage of loading the trailers, or even driving to the site.
Noted!
Jobs like that need to be twice the price for having to mess with someone else's handy-work.
