One of the best parts of this anime is that the game's rules are never fully explained, yet they're so intuitively displayed that you never feel lost during the matches. This goes on for all seasons of the anime
I remember watching this when it came out, when Infected ended on a cliffhanger we all lost our minds! Being an anime original, there was no indication that a season 2 was in the works and the last episode seem to line up for a Madoka-like conclusion and then they pulled the rug from under us. Also, the OPs for Infected and Spread were amazing!
Actually I encourage everyone to continue the wixoss universe with Lostorage season 1 and 2, since part 1 takes a break from the main cast and has a new main cast (soft reboot) but part 2 brings back the og cast with an all out battle finale. (Until Diva A Live fully reboots the series into typical card anime involving team building and friendship, with a hint of idol anime)
I see youre one of my people hello! totally agree with you, in my own comment I talked about how much I love infected and lostorage and believe they are genuine true masterpieces
@@vollied4865 (I'm really bad with names) but the conflicts in Lostorage are very unique, the heroine fighting for memories and the antagonist being okay with losing them. Also the two polar perspectives they have about conflict. Main character is more upbeat and positive facing conflicts while* the antagonist blames everyone else for their misfortune.
There is no "reboot" Lostorage is a direct sequel meant to take care of the root of the problem that turned mayu into the villain Diva is the future of the cardgame after its curse was lifted, there is no reboot, everything happens in-universe
As someone who's watched a handful of card game anime, and who's actually invested in most of the card games said anime promotes, I gotta say, Wixoss is the best one of all of those card game anime I've watched. And I mean both Selector and Lostorage series when I say this. The dark secret, the twists, the stakes. And in second place comes Build Divide (which briefly appeared in this video). Now, that one is not on the same level as Wixoss entirely, but the revelation that comes later on takes one a bit by surprise. It's intriguing
As someone who had watched infected and spread first, I cannot get into build divide or Vanguard at all. Not sure about other card game anime but I can forgive conflated and incited
That was one hell of an advertisement. But then again, I appreciate this kind of difference. I don't think living in Yugioh's shadow plot-wise would always be a good idea.
I was in card game business at time this anime released, I bought some boxes and they sold like hot bread, even being in japanese only. Wixoss was one of a kind, the game was fun with absolute amazing anime making it popular among weebs. And you missed an important part, Ruko found her wish to be freeing the LRIGS and selectors and she did it in most satisfying way.
I think the thing about Wixoss is exactly that, they didnt want to just advertise the card game, they had something to say and used the card game as that mean. It's a really fun card game and it's a great anime, that's all I have to say
I think a series that deconstructs its own franchise can work really well. Digimon is a great example, especially Digimon Tamers. It still applies reality to the setting, like the dangers and moral quandaries of raising and fighting Digimon, but it doesn't do so in a way that feels like the writers actively disliked the source material. I would also argue that it does it better than wixoss seems to do, judging from this video at least. The thing about Yugi's line "it's about how you play" is... It still works in any context other than wixoss. In Yu-Gi-Oh, as well as in real life, just because someone beat you at the game it doesn't mean your dreams will never come true, it just means you have to try harder or find a different approach.
So..what about Selector Destructed Wixxos? While it is more a 60% recap and focused more on Ulith's side of things, it also give a proper ending to Ruuko and Tama's story (the first scene answers why Ruuko though of "Tama" as a name). And it makes more sense as a connection to the event of the Incited/Conflated Wixxos series.
"WIXOSS" is what you get when you take "Yu-Gi-Oh!", "Madoka Magica", "Black Rock Shooter", and "Cardcaptor Sakura", and put them in a blender. It's a great series and I enjoyed every bit of it.
I actually watched both Selector anime when they came out; didn't get into the other WIXOSS anime though. I totally forgot about Yuzuki being a brocon; she was actually one of my favorite characters. Might need to watch it again. I liked Ruko too and Akira. I still remember the latter's "Aki-lucky" catchphrase. Iona to me was pretty cool, the real villain was Ulith, I think. Hanayo was also cute.
I love wixoss, its a masterpiece, and the sequel is even better, sadly the 3rd series drops the ball for more of a typical idol waifu show, but the 1st 2 are complete masterpieces that deserves more attention.
@@randalljolla yeah unfortunately it's the current format they decided to release the game finally in the west totally wish we got key format instead, but the idol show 'diva-live' doesn't get back to the wixoss goodness til it's like last 2 episodes
I'm still annoyed that the selector infected and spread animes were the only ones in the series to get a physical release in the U.S. I really loved lostorage as well but it's unavailable to own. It's nice hearing kanon wakeshima sing an anime opening again. I hadn't heard her since vampire knights ending themes.
Hey! I’m new here but I love what you’ve got going so far! I can definitely see this channel blowing up sometime in the future and I can’t wait for it. (At first I did honestly think this was a big UA-cam channel just from the quality of the videos haha)
Looking back on it, the show was heavily flawed, but I still can't forget the animation and the background settings. It felt so melancholic and realistic, it reminded me of my hometown a little bit.
The best comical deconstruction of card game anime I've ever seen is, hands-down, no questions asked, Vanguard Extra Story -IF-. overDress also deserves some recognition, because a key part of the backstory of a major character is that they were essentially a child prodigy forced into a stressful hamster wheel of school and studying, who became addicted to Vanguard after their grandmother gave them a deck as a fun little diversion, and their life almost entirely fell apart because of it. This is in an anime that is by almost any definition SLICE-OF-LIFE. The darkest it gets all season.

I feel Wixoss stands above the rest of the card game series, mainly because it does it's best not to be a cheap advertisement to just a card game. I found the character driven plot way more fascinating then simply. "Look at the dude with the silly hair, saving the world by playing with pieces of cardboard. BUY YOUR OWN BLUE EYES WHITE DRAGON NOW KIDS!" The thing that holds this series back is exposure, for whatever asanie reason, Tomy has decided with a release of the card game in the west, not to release it in several areas. The most noticeable one being the UK, you know the COUNTRY THAT GAVE THE WORLD THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!" As a guy that lives in England, this is baffling to me, sure there are some places that sell it in the UK, but they have to get their stock from Germany or other places in Europe. Because either Tomy or the UK suppliers refuse to stock it. It also hasn't helped that the series never really got advertised or promoted properly either. Selector Infected and Spread are the only seasons that have been dubbed. The Loststorage two parter has never been dubbed, and as of now Diva A Live has also not had any news of being dubbed despite the series been out for 2 years and the card game coming out last year as well. Proper exposure can make or break a series, an example of this would be the Fire Emblem series, prior to Awakening on 3DS, Fire Emblem was doing very badly, however, it wasn't fully dead in fact when the first international released game came out "The Blazing Blade" was actually advertised properly, in magazines, on TV etc. So it was in the eyes of the public. All the future games were given at best footnotes and as such failed to grab the attention of people, who weren't already in the know. However, Awakening was a last minute make or break so Nintendo promoted the hell out of it, and now Fire Emblem is a household name in gaming and one of Nintendo's big series, with several main series games, spinoffs (one of which comes out in two weeks from me writing this), and yes even a card game! Wixoss has the same problem, hell I didn't even know it was a series until around 2 years ago, and that was simply because a friend of mine, told me about it. And then I ended up watching the series and loving it. But it was really only us two who knew about it. So I don't think it is premise or anything that hinders the series, hell the series is a great example of taking an existing genre and making something creative and refreshing. But it is simply the exposure. It hasn't helped that card game animes tend to focus on male leads too. So automatically people go "Er a girl focused series, this is so stupid and moe and erp a derp!" and don't actually try to watch it solely on appearance.
I did give this anime a chance and finished the 1st season, but didn't follower because they didn't go into how to play the game and skip all the turns. On the other hand, a protagonist with Akira's personality would be cool thou.
I get why you think it's a deconstruction of the cardgame genre but I'd say not at all but it still is an underrated gem Even if it borrows 80% of it's plots from Madoka Magica.
Hold up so even when you win you don't actually get your wish but someone else gets it?! Wtf is this dogwater game. My guess is the main character wishes to free her elrig or whtvr and that'll stop them from swapping or smth.
9:11 No, look at Vanguard overdress. What's important about anime, promotion or not is the characters. People like yugioh because they had memorable characters like Kaiba and Atem. The same goes for Aichi and Kai. I don't give a shit about mechanics if the characters are bland af. If I want to learn mechanics, I might as well learn from top deck heroes and dkayed. Not wasting my time watching unlikable characters soullessly, playing the game without any sauce
The original selector series created a very strong "cult following" in the west- if it wasnt for the anime's small but feverant community, I highly doubt the tcg would have ever had a western release. More than half I talk to who currently play were fans of Selector. Wixoss is still around as a game, while Luck and Logic is dead (with a more typical card game tie in anime), and sells better than Z/X. I think the game would sell well among those who try it either way (as its amazingly designed), but with the "waifu" art I think a traditional shonen-trope tcg anime wouldnt have left the lasting impression Selector did. A large part of what makes Infected/Spread is the crew behind it. Series composition by Okada (Maquia, Anohana, BRS, IBO, etc), Directed by Sato (Steins;Gate), backgrounds by Studio Pablo (Flip Flappers later). The atmosphere is top notch for a "madoka ripoff" and really carves its own place.
One of the best parts of this anime is that the game's rules are never fully explained, yet they're so intuitively displayed that you never feel lost during the matches. This goes on for all seasons of the anime

Wixoss was basically madoka magica meets Yu-Gi-Oh and it was pretty decent.

Not all of them
Variated body types, young, mature, little, big
But they are all girls
Don't worry there's a mommy later on lol

I get why you think it's a deconstruction of the cardgame genre but I'd say not at all but it still is an underrated gem
Even if it borrows 80% of it's plots from Madoka Magica.
Its its own thing, it doesn't borrows from madoka at all
It was aimed towards girls
I couldn’t get past Yuzuki’s wish honestly
You mean "subversive"
Desconstruction is nothing more than a zoomer buzzword
Anime wasn’t very good tho
