    What no one is mentioning is that TWO successful head coaches who QUIT at Wisconsin said a big part of the decision was the academic requirements that are even higher than in most of what is a high academics conference. They couldn't recruit players they wanted that others in the conference could. Bielema and his predecessor both said it.

      Chryst's predecessor, Gary Andersen, said that, and it's a well-known issue mostly for UW football and bball. However, Bucky still shouldn't lose to Illinois and WSU.

      I didn't realize that, but it makes sense. That's always a problem for schools with high academic standards like Vandy, Stanford, Northwestern, etc. There isn't a lot of overlap between people with above average IQ and elite playmaking ability, and the ones who do fit that mold are probably not going to Wisconsin over the few other competitors in that market. It's also why you see so many players in the SEC with majors like "African Studies" and do-nothing classes.
      My favorite example of this was a rerun I saw a couple years ago from a 1990 Tennessee game, and one of the highlighted players was majoring in "Urban Studies." It's really absurd that we still have sports so closely tied with academic institutions, forcing schools to play the charade of "student athletes."

      They aren't the only program in the country with high academic admittance standards. The real problem is the brands they recruit against for those types of kids. Michigan, Notre Dame, etc. I mean, if I'm a HS kid I'm not going to Wisconsin over either of those two schools.

      There's lots of great coaches out there. If you don't think you have a chance to pull one you're underselling your program. Unless you think he's just as good as Baylor's HC then ok. I'd give NW a call. They've made it to the B10 championship with far less. He can get the most out of every guy.

    Josh is spot on, Wisconsin needs to start committing resources to the program if it wants to stay relevant. I've read that they have a laughably low recruiting budget. Not sure/confirmed, but I know that they current class is 57th.
      They have won 9, 10 games a lot in the last 20 years, even 12 twice I believe, but when they have been in a division it has usually been a weak division. Winning that much in spite not even trying all that hard in recruiting and have some higher academic standards is pretty impressive on the other hand, but how long was that sustainable?
      When UCLA and USC join the B1G things get more serious. No more being coddled in an easy division. Not having a competent passing game won't cut it. I believe that the new AD sees this landscape / sees the future, and this why I was not shocked by this firing. A lot of people are saying they are shocked.

    • @AlecVice
      @AlecVice 2 роки тому +3

      @@andrewmueller9986 Laughable is about right. In 2019 a study was done and it showed Wisconsin ranked dead last in P5 for their recruiting budget, despite their class finishing 29th that year. Other programs caught on and poached their entire recruiting department the next year, and they(read Paul Chryst) decided not to rehire those positions for the next ~18 months, so essentially they decided dead last wasn't low enough. They recently filled those positions again, but this definitely helps explain the 57th ranking.

    With all due respect, Leipold has one successful season (the current one) in a power five league. Matt Campbell has a better track record. Also, i think. Wisconsin is not the type of place where you can get rid of coaches and not go through a bad rebuild. They do not recruit in that manner. They need someone they know or someone who has won in a Power 5 league. My choice would be Leonhard. If they dont hire him on a permanent basis he will get a head coaching job somewhere else, probably this year.

    So stupid. I remember when Mason had Minnesota winning eight plus games a year. They fired him because they were really good but not great. Minnesota was horrible for a while after that. Solich and Stoops had Nebraska winning a lot, but not competing for national championships. They were fired. Look at Nebraska now. Wisconsin was the top dog in the West. That wasn't enough. Now we'll see. However, Wisconsin has to realize that they are not Ohio State. The cupboards are not, nor will they ever be, overflowing with four and five star recruits. Occasionally competing with Ohio State, PSU, and Michigan should be enough. Developing players so that they have an amazing team once every few years and a solid team in off years is what Wisconsin is. Quit trying to be something you're not.

      Wisconsin has lost the last 8 games to Ohio State, most of them embarrassingly. But what has changed is that the Badgers are losing to Minnesota, Illinois, and Northwestern. The offense is so predictable and can't get the job done anymore. The only reason they were winning any games was because of the defense and they are very young this year and making many mistakes on the fly. It was time for a change.

    • @adamdearing6560
      @adamdearing6560 2 роки тому

      Minnesota got pretty good under Fleck. Illinois is vastly improved. Northwestern has its years. Wisconsin should be the premier team in the B1G West though. I am not arguing that. However, the nature of the B1G West is that it is super competitive. None of the teams really out recruit the others by much. So you have to consider that with less of a talent gap, there are going to be close games, unexpected losses, and bad years where things just don't click. A .720 winning percentage is pretty impressive under those circumstances. I don't have an argument about the boring offense other than that's what's worked in Madison since Alvarez. Until Wisconsin can recruit QBs and star receivers that's what they have to do. Wisconsin gets and developes plenty of great offensive linemen and running backs. If that's what they have, then what's wrong with utilizing them?

    Classic case of an AD having very little idea about how leading a football team works. Leonhard is the shiny new toy who draws up a neat blitz that sacks the QB on a 3rd & 5, but there is a major difference between doing that and being in charge of players, coaches, and other program people, many of whom think they know better than you do. Leonhard is assuredly a brilliant football mind and a high character individual, but this job he’s walking into is an entirety different situation than anything he’s ever encountered before. Leipold needs to be the first person they talk to on the phone the second they’re able to, because I have my doubts about whether Leonhard is truly up for this.

Wisconsin made the mistake of choosing the shiny new toy Graham Mertz over Jack Coan last season and it cost them a B1G Championship appearance, now they’re doing it again with the head coach.
