- Dive into the profound teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky, and the psychological commentaries of Maurice Nicoll as we explore the intricate world of self-observation. In this video, Mark Roach shares reflections from Nicoll's work, particularly from April 18th, 1953, discussing how illness can serve as a unique lens for self-observation and how our inner voices react during such times.
We'll cover:
*Self-Observation in Illness:* How physical ailments can quiet the personality, allowing for a different perspective on our inner selves.
*The Dynamics of Sympathy and Symptoms:* Understanding the complex relationship between our desire for sympathy and the manifestation of symptoms.
*Resentment and Inner Peace:* The necessity to see both ourselves and others fully to dissolve resentments and achieve a balanced view of life.
*The Soul's True Function:* Insights into how the soul should relate inward to higher centers rather than outward to the sensory world.
*Completing the Self:* The journey from being half-developed to becoming whole through inner work and self-awareness.
This video isn't just about understanding Gurdjieff's concepts; it's about applying them to transform our daily experiences into opportunities for growth. From the mechanics of our inner conversations to the transformative power of true self-observation, we'll explore how these teachings can lead us towards a more conscious and complete life.
Join me as we navigate through these philosophical and psychological depths, aiming to not just discuss but to embody these teachings in our quest for greater self-awareness and personal evolution.

Hi Mark, thank you for this lecture. It’s interesting how you mentioned that as long as a person is in love, a true relationship is impossible. It seems like the illusion of love makes one unable to see the other person as they truly are, but instead, they idealize them.
That struck a chord with me as well. It sounds similar to a Jungian theme of doing work to accept the opposite sex in oneself to become more rounded. Anima and Animus, I if I recall correctly.
There is no other. When I begin to see the game play of the false personality, then I deny the self and disengage from their’
s. Its lonely down here…:)
@ I’ve also encountered this loneliness, tho at times find a new a different connection to others on the path. Txzhanks for commenting and wishing you the best!
Choose the life you want
Blessed to be an AMERICAN
It does offer such a powerful perspective and potential. Thanks for the comment!
Iron sharpens iron, strong men lead with strength
Thanks for the comment! Powerful and insightful comment to apply to our lives. All the best.
Pack Animals, lead with Strength, like Dogs and Wolves
But because they are pack Animals they copy intelligence and intelligence leads them wherever it wants
And intelligence is not physical
@@KevinMannix-sf5zk Love the comment and perspective. Perhaps it leads to the idea several masters have shared how groups act without a reflection of the character and values of individuals .... Thanks for the comment and all the best!
Does Gurdjieff cover the observation that there is no self? I`m not familiar with the teachings but very interested.
I like that question … as I’ve understood Gurdjieff’s work I’ve not seen the absence of self or “no self” mentioned. The concept of attention to an identity that may be a major or minor element of one’s consciousness is important to the system he’s unfolding in the 4th way. Hope that helps
A machine that knows its a machine is no longer merely a machine 😉
@@gazzyb1079 Exceptionally well stated!
"G" taught people in the first instance that everything within the work will not achieve anything until you learn to "self remember"
So correct in the present there is no self, there is only the observer, so nothing is there to remember
The future self is imagined and therefore has not happened and cannot be remembered
The only Self you can remember is the Self that has already happened
So the lesson is basically stop pretending you know who you are, in the I imagine who I am sense
But take a good hard watch of who you are in the past, Like how do you speak to that person , how did your day go, what went wrong, ? how did you handle it
And practice watching yourself in the very real sense
Lesson 1 you will notice you cant remember what you were thinking, so the recording process pays no attention to the very thing most people imagine they are
Lesson 2 the Vividness and clarity of the thing you are remembering , Getting caught in the rain is a vivid memory , walking along happily in the park is hazy , You need to work on allowing the good memories' to gain vividness
how can you work on yourself if the only idea you have of yourself is the one you imagine in the present ?
You need to really learn and "know thyself"
That's a profound take on self-observation! Understanding the distinction between the observer and the self is crucial for personal growth. Your insights about the clarity of memories really resonate with the teachings of Gurdjieff.
any word on *Self attunement* ? *Divine attunement of self* ?
That’s provocative. Thank you. I want to reflect on that word - “attunement” as it relates to self.
🕊️💝🌞👍
thank you

right on !
Freedom over subjugation
Amen!
Gurdjieff man or Titan?
I love the question. I never met him (obviously). Nor have I known a Titan (to my recollection). All the best!
It ain't easy being with someone who is also in the Work but it is healthy for you. I guess from what you're saying is if it ever happens again I'm supposed to call Her daddy?!🤣
Once you’re in …. It can feel there’s no going back - but I’m here to say there is a dignified way to live with one foot in and one foot out (of course with some cooperation)
Sympathetic.. unsympathetic
or
Understanding / misunderstanding
Well stated … exactly!
