I’ve personally suffered from a major case of FOMO when it comes to camera kit. My main camera is the LUMIX S5 but just recently I’ve been using the DJI OSMO Action 4 with the DJI Mic 2. Honestly the ease of that setup is so great. Point, shoot, edit, upload. Job done ☑️

nice an older fashion photographer gave me his old d300 also! I met him at a hair show with my mom when I was 15 and he stayed my friend till now but took a long time till I met a street photographer Joshua Best who gave me a lesson that really got me going. Now I mostly use my cell cause it's so convenient and inconspicuous plus speed captures moments you would miss setting up or pulling out a camera. Audio is most important but like even today I looked back at my 1st upload on this channel 3 years ago. My daughter is 3 and so cute I loved it more than my latest stuff. It's more about capturing moments and sharing memories, entertaining and that is done more by you as a person than by the gear you use!

Having the lastest features means little if you don't feel inspired to create.

I switched to my Samsung Galaxy S22 ultra for 6 months, used dedicated audio and good lighting instead and not a single comment was made of the quality of the videos. Good gear just makes everything easier since it can handle more complex lighting and difficult focus situations better. If anything I would say that lighting and sound is more of a key for success than the camera when it comes to gear.

Creativity, charisma and ideas make the Channel.
Get a Panasonic gh5 and Sigma 16 f1.4 - sooo cheap and so functional. 35mm ish FF is the ULTIMATE all round focal length. And so much room to grow into performance shooting.
I like the Sony A6400 advice too - again - with fast lenses
As a Panasonic fan boy (S5s with nice lenses) - I used an FX6 recently and it was sooo sweet in outdoor shooting - and brilliant for someone that shoots ALOT on the daily.
however... indoors under lights - no difference to my Full Frame Panasonic that is 1/4 the cost.

Thank you for this extended, personal op. video. This was fun first to watch, which passively supported one of your big points: talent first! We can all tell how an actor or presenter kinda feels though the lens. We respond better to humans over robots; I found myself smiling each time you flubbered a word and carried on, especially because we've all been there speaking 'in public'.

When I started thinking about starting a channel a while ago I thought a lot about what I could bring to the table having only access to limited gear (my phone and a mic) and late last year I sort of figured it out and made a couple of videos at the end of the year, and a couple this year.
What I landed on, to just *get going*, was to make some videos about how I was going to make those videos and how I could make the gear I needed myself (lights/softbox/stands/reflectors/slider/softbox-grid/etc) - both for myself just to get some practice, but also to show others who want to «get going» that you can get shit done, and hopefully make things look good, by making stuff from cardboard, some broom handles, white cardstock, and general crap.
Building a «youtube studio» piece by piece, making a keylight with a softbox, making a grid for it (video coming soon), failing miserably at being consistent (3, soon to be 4) videos in 5 months … but I’m having fun, and creating stuff based on where I’m at, which makes it possible for me to create some content, rather than «saving up for an A6700 before starting».
So a small tip for anyone wanting to start a channel would be to create content based on where they are now, and where they might want to go, document what they do to get to where they want to be, and take it from :)
The double win is that the content is relatable for many who themselves might want to start, and by doing this one gets to start creating videos, which is a double win, and eho knows what igje happen down the road :D

You're absolutely right about how you use the camera is more important than the camera itself. I think it's also important to consider the conditions you film in. I am in the early stages of my channel but I used to use a camera and tripod for my hiking videos. I got so fed up with hiking with the weight that I down sized a few times and now I just use my phone and a mini tripod. I've made a few mistakes but have learned from them. I do like to look of the Osmo Pocket 3 though, it would be perfect for my needs but until one is in my hands my phone will continue to do the job.

Couldn't relate more with everything you said! I have fancy cameras because of my business (Sony A7SIII + Sony A7IV) but I am at the start of my UA-cam journey and even though it's nice to have nice equipment, practice/repetition is what really matters...or what Peter would say: "CONSISTENCY!"

Once you understand how to run the wheels off on the camera you quickly find out its limitations. But I agree, the camera doesn’t make you a better story teller. If you want specific shots and your camera straps your creativity… then it’s time to upgrade. That will exponentially increase with learning to edit. You know what shots you want, and how to get them through editing, and learn quickly if your camera is capable of capturing said shot.

100% true! People forget / are unaware there are a lot of channels which have 6 digits sub count, who are recording on a phone or action cam only. As you said it always depends on the story and the person conveying the message through the lens.
That being said I fell down that gear trap myself and bought a lot of stuff I thought I would need to start. But in the end all that stuff only hindered me to get the reps of practise in.
Now I think I have a good rhythm between job and two kids get these videos out for my channels. And unfortunately I have to say gear videos are just easier for SEO and growth ^^''
Thank you Peter again and again, specially for these kinds of motivational videos. All these years your words were a part of my journey to keep me going (next to Heather, Tom and Arnulfur :) and now after passing the 4k hours watch time milestone I'm closing in to the 1k sub mark.
Thank you from the botton of my heart! 🙏

Thanks Peter for a another nice video
I would say that it also depends a bit on what kind of content you are going to create, for example flight reviews which I do for fun. If I would use my Nikon Z8 (which I mainly use for bird photography), I would not be very popular in airports and onboard aircrafts. It brings to much attention and instead I use my iPhone together with my Osmo Pocket camera which are much more discreet but still gives a descent picture quality, especially the iPhone 15 and the Osmo pocket 3 camera.

I also think it is important to keep it simple, in the beginning forget about logfiles, colorgrading etc, just use standard profiles and automatic settings. What is much more important than super good picture quality is to improve your story telling skills, something that I still try to learn but hopefully getting better at it , but it takes time:>) Learning by doing!

I have some pretty decent gear. DJI mini 3, go pro 10, cinewhoop DJI o3, canon m50 full set of lenses and filters, Sennheiser and rode mics. Honestly, the more I put into the video the worse it usually does. When I make stuff off the cuff, it goes way better. Lots of those might be off just the Samsung or GoPro. Not every viewer on UA-cam is looking for cinema quality. It's easy to forget that, story and camera presence truly is king.

Sitting with me right now is a completely rigged out fx6 totaling about $17,000 and about two months ago I decided to ditch using stuff like that and just pulled out my phone to start making UA-cam videos (client work is done on my fx6 and REDs).
I got too caught up in the “everything needs to be perfect and superior quality” mindset that I never actually pressed record.
The cameras, lights, audio, etc isn’t the content… what you create is the content. And until you press record, you aren’t creating content.

For UA-cam, Instagram and other social networks, even sony a5100 is going to be enough. Sony zv-e10 or Nikon z30, these cameras are ok for vlogging. Yeah, I got full frame camera, so what I am going to do it for Instagram, in the end Instagram will compress that video, nobody is going to watch on big screen. And again, to take pricey camera when you are traveling and accidentally dropping pricey camera going to be more painful than dropping nikon z30
