Catching BLUEGILL On The Ultralight Double Jig Rig!

- Life has been quite busy so this is likely the final kayak fishing trip of the 2023 open water season. I started the day off with a big bait in my hand chasing bass, but ultimately decided to switch down to an ultralight rod in pursuit of whatever was willing to bite. I was noticing some Bluegill activity in the shallow water, so I rigged up an ultralight double jig rig and started casting it around. Bam - literally caught one on the first cast!
The ultralight double jig rig can be a highly effective way to catch fish, and if things go your way, you may actually catch two on one cast. One of my favorite things about this rig is the fact that you can experiment with colors and determine what pattern the fish like best. On this day, it didn't surprise me that the more toned down black variety was the winner of the two I was using. The chartreuse worked fine too but the black just seemed to draw more, and bigger, bites.
I was using my Phenix Elixir 7'6 ultralight rod with a Shimano Sedona 1000 reel rigged up with 6lb Spro Finesse Braid to a 4lb Trilene Sensation leader. Both jigs were 1/64oz Mule Jigs, with the top one rigged with a Mule Minnow 1.2 and the bottom rigged with a Donkey Tail Jr. Overall, I was very pleased with this day of fishing :)

I just bought my first kayak today 👀 and I’m so excited to take it out!
Congratulations..in the process of looking for one myself..jus hope my motion sickness can handle being in a kayak 😅
I just bought one as well and itching to get it on the water. Can’t wait to get away from the bank and find more productive water!
Absolutely love to hear it! Hope you catch a ton of fish in the yak!
Just got my order of floats and the small minnows in. Can’t wait to hit the water with them
This is the best baits out there for ultra light fishing. And the best content on UA-cam. God bless and tight lines brother.
Thank you very much, Caleb!
Nice work, brother! Grats on the new baby!
Thank you very much Barry :)
Should have brought your fly rod out. I was able to catch several this weekend using one. Great video.
I would like to see that!
Someday I will commit to the fly rod. I just find traditional gear more enjoyable these days.
i always just spray my hands and then rub it on my face my guy, just some hot information.
Lol to be honest, I hate the greasy feeling of sunscreen on my hands. But fair point!
For my birthday my mom got me your new worms and a sun screen with built in bug repellent, funny enough it is from Avon but it is really good stuff. Happens to smell really good as well. I will find a link and send it to you!
I might have to track down that sun screen!
Sometimes you just need to go out and catch a bunch of fish. Great video had great time watching it.
Thank you :) Always a good time!
I've been catching tons of crappie on the chartreuse donkey tail jr. I have an idea for a simple shad color. White with the skinny part of the tail black, then the paddle part of the tail white.
Thank you for the feedback! I will definitely keep that in mind :)
Totally agree that bluegills are great! You caught a bunch of nice ones! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you - tight lines!
That's nice work brother. I love using the double around the weedline and transition areas. Usually I find them suspended and moving upward to feed. Pretty fish. Blessings Ethan
Heck yeah! Thanks Brian.
I just went out fishing yesterday in a river, and I didn't catch anything it was beautiful. Snow on the ground. And hopefully the order I placed with you shows up today cuz I'm really excited to use some of your plastics
Thanks so much for the support! Props to you for getting out and trying despite the cold weather. Tight lines Joe!
Where is bluegill city USA? My guess is Michigan? Looks a lot like our Canadian Shield lakes in Ontario.
Yep I am located in Michigan!
You are so lucky to have those panfish species, only real ultralight freshwater species here are our version of your yellow perch and if you could count trout then those too.
Yeah I am very thankful for all the fishing styles I have available!
You got my double-rig brain going; mule jig on bottom, and mini octo for drop shot nose hook on top. Maybe for dropping in deep or pitching cover.
Another promising rig!
Dude. $3 purple mule jigs right now? Better believe I just ordered 6 packs.
New limited color dropping soon!
Nice video Nathan. Catching bluegill are a lot of fun, but I’ve never rigged 2 jigs at once. Nice job. Enjoy every video.
Try it out and I think you will like it!
Is there any certain way to tie that double rig
Some of those bluegill were absolutely gorgeous!
I love the various colors of sunfish :)
I atill have not tried this rig, on my to do list!
How did that sunscreen taste?! Lol
Give it a shot, I think you’ll have fun!
And it tasted bad 😂😂
Bluegill are not only beautiful and fun but they taste great!
True!
What kayak are you using? Looks really nice
Old Town Sportsman PDL 120
What kind of knot do you use for the dropper?
You can see a demonstration of this knot at the end of this video: ua-cam.com/video/pJ9b8jUfiIo/v-deo.htmlsi=9At1BkmoaH5VQJLN
Can u put a link of the 2 baits u used
These are both available at www.MuleFishing.com
Donkey Tail Jr. and Mule Minnow 1.2 rigged on 1/64oz Mule Jigs
Hi Nathan, maybe it’s time to go back to that lake and see if you can beat your PB bluegill. Fun time, keep on fishing.
I would love to get back out and chase down another 10+
Nice
