You want to leave the breather valve open when you turn the pump on until water begins to run out of it. once you have a steady stream of water, you want to close it. This allows all the air to be released from the filter housing as it fills with water.

I agree. We didn’t know that and when we started up the filter, all that air pressure came through the pipes and out into the pool. It was scary because the pipes were shaking and rattling. I hope it didn’t damage anything. Lesson learned. Keep breather open to release all that air.

Excellent video. If you are cleaning your Jandy filter than this is the video to watch. Thank you i followed you step by step and my first cleaning went perfect. I would like to add that I drained my filter and if you do this then after you put the casing back together and screw it tight and secure you will need to open up the other filter with the smaller white filter with the tab that he shows also cleaning and add 3-5 gallons of water and then secure that top ASAP to eliminate air. This will add enough water back into the main filter when priming and starting back up. You always want to make sure you see water through that clear top. Hope that helps. Thanks again for this video you have no idea how much help this was.

Thank you so much for this video! Still fairly new to having a pool, have a pool guy taking care of it. My sweep stopped working and he said the filters needed cleaning and was going to charge me above and beyond my normal rate to do it. I figured I could probably do it myself if I knew what was up, and your video showed me. Got everything done in about an hour. Seems like everything is all good, and the sweep is working just fine.

    Two things though,
    1. Drain the filter completely but taking the drain plug off. That ways you can rinse off the filter tank.
    2. Those cartridges need to be replaced. They look like they’re done.

Excellent instructions, thank you! The process is simple and easy to follow. However, the amount of dirt and sand in the filters was shocking to me. My pool is one year old this May, it's March right now, so I knew it was time but wow! I think each filter probably weighed 20 lbs dirty and maybe 5 lbs clean. My neighborhood is still under construction so there is a huge amount of dust, hopefully, this will settle down as time goes by. Thanks again for the excellent video, very helpful. I have a weekly pool cleaning service and they wanted $125 to clean the filters. Now that I've done it myself I can see that's not a terribly bad deal, but I can certainly do this amount of work to save that money. Now that I know the process I'll just clean them twice a year and try to stay on top of it.

I had a pool company close the pool in October and they are coming on May 3 to open it. I am going to use them to open and close the pool because that puts the liability on them for anything that is damaged. But I want to maintain the pool during the summer and these types of videos are what I need.

I just removed old ones and put new ones in using this video. so thank you. one thing I did want to mention is that there is a drain plug towards the bottom of the unit. After releasing the pressure, you can unscrew open that drain plug and water will flow out of the unit. you can then rinse inside and water and debris will leave unit out the bottom. overall though, great job!

There is no pressure when the pump is off. The sound you are hearing is air being pulled into the filter system as the water is receding, not pressure being released. If you don't let the air in, then it is really hard to get the lid off and water will flow everywhere.

If you open the filter pump lid as well as open the bleed valve then the water will drain back down into the pipes (if you’re without a check valve).
Makes it somewhat faster/easier to pop the lid off.
If your pool gets sediment in it and is vacuumed frequently the cartridge filters are suboptimal compared to DE filters.
Also, be careful with Jandy drain plugs if you take them off. They are notorious in the industry for failing if torqued heavily.

I also soak the filters after I'm done in a 10% bleach mix inside a big garbage can for 30min, that kills most or all the algae etc. Also open the valve at the bottom 1st, tons of dirt/sand in the bottom! hand tighten valve and put back together like he did - he did a gr8 job besides these 2 pts. I would add that you should "lubricate" the orings & the large one that the band sits on & i would have used some degreaser/cleaner on those cartridges after your initial water hose cleaning! 😏. Good video:)

Super helpful. NOTE: If your pool equipment is LOWER than your pool (especially if it's several feet lower) then you'll need to add a step to TURN OFF the flow of water to the pump. Otherwise, gravity will do its thing and draw water down to the system. Then, when you remove the clear strainer cap or filter housing, water will continue to overflow out of the system. Which can be scary. Turning off the flow is usually done with a simple in-line PVC valve just in front of the clear cap strainer. After you do your cleaning, remember to turn the flow back ON before you start your pump/filter again.

Why not drain the filter housing by unscrewing the large cap down there? Don't have to get all wet (but mind the miniflood that pours out).
Pool guy showed me to also use that detached cap to close one end of the salt cell/prop it up for cleaning.
    Thanks very much too!

I can't get that front cap back on without it dripping. Tried 4 or 5 times now

@@christinawebster3242 I've never had a problem with that lower cap on the main filter housing. Maybe I got them mayuhn hayuns.
I HAVE had a couple times where I didnt tighten the salt cell couplings enough and they leaked a bit. It pays to come back and check things one more time once it's all running again.

@@christinawebster3242 Judging by how hard it is to get that cap OFF, I suspect it requires a lot of torque to get it on properly so that it doesnt leak. This is probably why Gizmo doesnt drain it every time. I would siphon that nasty water out though, and not put expensive new cartridges right into the dirty water.

Hey, does it have an o-ring for the cap on the drain?

You also want to turn the clean/dirty dial so your needle lines up with the clean mark. Then you know when they are dirty. I’d also do this after putting new filters in. Then don’t touch it after that. Nice vid.
