We started no dig last year when we found your Chanel and have found it to be far superior to getting the tiller out and spending hours basically destroying the soil structure. It is a lot easier to manage the weeds as they just pull out, no digging. Every video you post gives even more ideas on how to do better, thank you.

Hi Anne, I had the same positive experience, starting with No Dig last year, albeit with just a couple of small beds after discovering Mr. Dowdings' channel. Now already lettuce, brassica, chards and beetroot plants are growing steadily on my plot while in the other vegetable gardens in the village, people are just starting to work the soil... 😉 The No Dig method proves its self already. Thank you Charles, for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I would like like to see schools get involved, kids would love watching bare patches of earth come to life if they kept all their hedge trimmings and etc. Throw a bit of homemade compost ontop and grow pumpkins or something, sunflowers..

In these times of economic crisis and where human jobs are being taken over by robots and machines - it's the current battle in EU at the moment, stopping machines taking over cashiers, secretaries, bookkeeping, post etc. - and reduced pensions, it certainly is an ideal way of life.

It's great to see a video from a few days ago, to get a current picture of how developed your garden is at this time of year. It really helps me to judge where I am, relative to a master grower.
My biggest lesson from you last year was to understand that early multisown modules are the ideal start to a no-dig growing season.
There are now only a few seeds, which I feel can't be sown early in module trays. Carrots would be the main seed that I'd still only sow directly into the ground.
I went by the sowing dates on your calendar. Thanks Charles!

    Charles Dowding
    - Great inspirational video. I honestly get so well impressed with your garden.
Definitely a beacon to follow, regarding production and land stewardship in one pack.
Thanks for that and also for sharing basic simple techniques. That is a true "guide" to avoid tilling the soil to death altogether.
The fields (not mine) in front of my window have been worked with a sequence of plough, raking, chemical fertilizer, disk arrow, huge amounts of manure than more raking and disk.
Quite impressive I might say, but not in a good way. That as been going on for little more than 2 weeks. That's a huge amount of diesel, two heavy duty tractors. From dawn to sundown, some days into the night...
No dig, keeping "life" in the soil, makes so much more sense. If for nothing else the expense and workload alone. Is a good excuse in our money hungry society... ;-)
    Once more thanks.
    Cheers

Broad beans were planted out too early last Fall and a mild winter led to too much growth before the freeze came. Lesrned a bit there. our gardens we always tilled and fertilized and added sand or mushroom compost, and got loads and loads of weeds. last year before growing season I convinced the others to bury the whole bed. I buried it under leaves and bits from forest floor, layered on that 3 inches of straw some of it being soaked straw inoculated with wine cap mushrooms, then buried all that with 3 inches of small wood chips. the mushrooms quickly spread through the straw and chips, and planted rows of crops in it and both mushrooms and crops grew well. at first some of the straw had grass seed that popped up but as of now theres nearly zero weeds and we largely increase our yield by getting loads of mushroom and vegetables from the same spot.

Very informative video, my thanks again. It would be really interesting if in a future video you could highlight the fungal 'biosphere' aspect, and perhaps the worm /bug contribution to 'no dig'. I hear so many talk about 'no weeds', and 'compost' (both of which are important issues of course) but it always seems to me that is the underlying health of the soil in this method that is in contrast to the 'rotate, fertilise, weed killer' approach. I also hear so many who garden on clay, that 'no dig' is not possible for them. It occurs to me that the 'no dig' approach is perhaps more applicable to them than the rest of us! I learn something great every time I watch or read your work - my thanks.

Interesting points and yes, for clay soils no dig is absolutely the way to go, they have not understood how it works

Happy Spring! And greetings from FL zone 9b! My garden (compost on sand) is really doing well, thanks in large part to your excellent advice and no-dig gardening! Once again, must say that I truly enjoyed, and are greatly benefiting from, your online course.

If you can't keep up with this guy's planting, buy his Diary. I am kind of smug that I have stuff in the ground and food to harvest for the first time so early, no greenhouse, just window sills and a cold frame. Big thanks Charles.

Thank you for making such engaging and informative videos :)

    Hello Charles,
TY for this encyclopaedic review. I'd like to share you an interesting trick to accelerate carrots germination. After the sowing, I put a plastic sheet over it ; and they germinate much faster.
You can also use bubble wrap just during germination time. It works very well.
It's quicker than a polypropylene mesh. I tested both methods ; and under plastic, if you choose a favourable period, you can expect a seedling emergence into 7 to 10 days !
    Have a nice Sunday,
    Sam

love your videos,. 28 April 3:30 am currently 20 degrees F. soil temp between 40 and 50 degrees F. Our average last frost date mid June and first fall frost mid September. If gardening were too easy it would not be so much fun but I do love grazing in my garden and greenhouses. :)
