  • To help you make good choices about what to plant, where and when, through all the season. It's easier with no dig, and when you understand parameters such as rotation.
I explain examples from my intensive cropping and intercropping at Homeacres. From May to October all beds are full , and some are double cropped with interplants.
Here is the Sowing Timeline charlesdowding...
More information on my website charlesdowding...
    in my books charlesdowding...
and in my online course charlesdowding....
A year of sowing dates, plus gorgeous photos and no dig advice are in my wall calendar, good to buy even late winter & spring charlesdowding...
Filmed, inspired and edited by Edward Dowding summer 2019 at Homeacres, 1000 square metres of no dig beds mostly cropped twice every year, zone 8 south west UK, climate is temperate oceanic, mild winters and warm not hot summers.

These videos of no dig vegetable growing are warming my heart. I have grown my own food all through the years for my family, for myself. This past summer I had the worst garden ever. Injuries, lack of time, and overall aging have been limiting factors and I have seen my precious seeds and money thrown to the wind. This gives me heart. I can make compost I can do all these things and whats more, there are many young gardeners who look to me for help and inspiration. Now, I can easily see another decade of my beloved gardening in these my senior years. THANK YOU

Hello Terry and this warms my heart!
Especially that you can put your accumulated knowledge of growing vegetables to good use, by helping so many younger people. There's a lot of enthusiastic youngsters now who need this kind of help, because growing vegetables successfully is not straightforward, unless they have a clear understanding of the principles, timings, pest protection et cetera, all of which you know.
      And how to make compost!
One last tip, as not to worry about a four-year rotation. Gardening suddenly become simpler 😀

I realise that this video is old and no one may read it. But I thought I would share. I am the proud owner of a beautiful patch of garden that has been growing potatoes and silver beet since at least 1949. I bought the house that my great aunty and uncle lived in all their married life. The bed in question has absolutely no attention whatsoever, no intentional watering, since the early 90s when Great Uncle Bob died. I am generously rewarded for no effort. I was even more surprised to find that the potatoes in question are a highly sought after heirloom variety that has not been available for purchase in New Zealand where I am from for many decades. Thought you may find this interesting. Thank you for the great videos. I learn so much from you.

Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experimental ways. I've grow potatoes (self growing) in the same spot for years, and they still produce good tubers, subject to water. I dont do it with any other vegies, but as I get older, I seem to get a little lazier. Keep up the great work, you are certainly changing the way people grow their food, a great skill to have!! After having an allotment for over 15years, next year will be the first spring that I will not have to clear the plot before I plant out. I've spent this year collecting paper and card to plough on with my no-dig method. I only have small patches left to cover and to go back and recover where the weeds are showing their resilience. My best year every in respect of work or should I say lack of hard work.

This makes perfectly sense. Cabbage - beans is a sort of rotation. The beans provides nitrogen by bacteria nodules, the cabbage is a nutrient demanding crop. As long as you have no disease in the earth (esp. fungal diseases) this can be done for years.

Everyone advocates your method of planting. I have been growing vegetables for four years by digging up the soil but I would like to try your method this year. I’m not certain if I should compact the soil and then put compost on top or just put compost on top but I’m going to give it a go. Thank you for posting your videos. They are helping to teach an old dog new methods.

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  3 роки тому

This is nice to know, and just spread compost on top, it's as simple as that. For clarity it's best not to use the word compact, because strictly speaking that is a condition of damaged soil. The best word to use is firm!
But it's rare that we need to firm soil, only if we have loosened it ourselves.

I will save this info for March and move it to March in my Pages planner. I love to be in the garden and smell fennel. It is also a host plant for the Swallowtail Butterfly. Repeating crops is fine. I keep my nitrogen high by planting Starbucks filters, coffee beans, and rabbit manure. I am going to plant a lot of potato seeds again this year. I love discovering them:-)

Keeping the beds full of growing vegetables and flowers sounds so much better than full of weeds. So I will be spreading the compost this spring, one bed at a time. Charles i feel like this will be a good year for changing some of the habits to tilling and digging. Gonna be trying more NoDig methods. Beans are a great crop for testing the non-rotation-ability of the no dig method. After about 4 years of beans, you will get more leaves/less pods for a few years as the beans switch into "Use up the excess nitrogen" mode.
If you have managed 7 years of beans without a problem, it is probably safe to say that rotation is unnecessary with the no dig method

Wonderful video once again. Planning is my big failing. We have such a short growing season here in central Minnesota it seems like I no more than get started and it's over. Better planning would probably do wonders.

For sure Mark and sow early too, like in your house, plus use row covers to increase your brief spring

I just love your lessons. Soo inspirational, informative and you make it sound so easy. As a long time gardener of vegetables, I know it's not as easy as you make it out to be but heck, you make us think we can conquer the art of growing our own food. It is New Year's eve 2021 in South Africa and I'm planting. Thank you so much

You make me anxious to get into the garden and start planting. But here, in Nova Scotia, Canada, we woke to -13 this morning, and it will only get colder from here on. And then there will be snow. I'm growing lettuce on my window sill, and I'll order seeds for spring. That's about all I can do this time of year. Thanks for making it feel 'warm' with your videos.

O wow, finally somebody who makes sense. Thank you for showing me (us) an out of the ingrained box!
I just got a fresh piece of community garden, and was ploughing through all the different charts and schemes, and didn't find any logic in those. Since when I look at nature, it's a 'little' different than in those schedules.
I'm starting to binge watch your channel, since I want to know it all! And apply as soon as possible in our garden, since it's already March... ;)
    Blessings,
    Diana, from The Netherlands/Holland

What a wonderful farm you have! I love the joy you seem to receive from growing. I enjoy watching my garden grow as well. Your advice is so helpful. I would love to know in your whole season videos the weather at planting, weather at sowing, weather when the plant is taken out. I'm in Northern California and we have such funny weather here. This year we had colder temperatures (55* F at the high) into May and then we had 85-115* F temps for the rest of the summer (zone 9b). Thanks for sharing your knowledge!! I appreciate it very much. :)

See this page here for my weather www.charlesdowding.co.uk/weather/index.htm and in the This Year tab at top, you can see weather on any day! From a Davis weather station in the garden :)
