As Los Bravos said, "Black is Black". If there's a difference between one and the other, it's usually minimal. You can also use Navy polish or cream on your black leather to really make it pop if you're good at doing mirror "spit" polish on shoes, belts etc. Brown matching is a nightmare. If I'm wearing brown or oxblood shoes with a navy Saxon suit, I don't even bother with a belt, I just wear braces to avoid the problem. I definitely like the idea of the black and brown "Visual Transition Sporran". The nice thing about the one Rocky is wearing is that the color is light enough to allow the end user to darken it if necessary. For the rest of it, I'd prefer if suppliers sold relatively lightly tanned brown stuff so I could pick a color of leather dye/polish/cream from a company like Saphir so I could do it myself or take items to my local cobbler to make them match. Fur is fur, especially if it's a full mask. It definitely doesn't have to match anything else. Critters don't even need fur. Years ago I saw a guy at the Sarasota Highland Games in Florida who had an Alligator Mask sporran. The alligator's tail was the sheath for his dirk and it looked awesome.
An excellent point made here I had never considered before - how brown leathers are incredibly hard to match! This explains why it was near impossible to find a belt to match my wedding day shoes
My nicer day sporran (that I did buy at a Ren fair and spent a pretty penny on) has a black flap and a brown body, and I've worn black and brown shoes with it on different occasions. I only own a black belt, so I tend to default to black outside of the sporran itself. It matches more standard and tartans in general imo.
Personally, I prefer brown leathers just because brown leathers and gold metals are colors that work well for me. Plus they are also colors that work well with the tweed outfits that I wear. I make sure my tweeds match the tartan but I don't bother matching the leather to the tartan. I also don't try to have the same shade of brown for all my leathers as I'm not a matchy matchy type person. Different shades of brown will compliment each other so they don't have to be exact. Also I ignore the black after six rule as I consider it complete nonsense :-).
I understand the sentiment. Color works with our complexion. Due to my complexion, I'm in the "blues, grays & silver" camp, rather than the "brown & gold" camp. But I'm wearing the colors that work well for me, just as you are.
I purposely bought a brown and black sporran so that I could wear either a brown or black belt or shoes. It works nicely with my PA state tartan. Eric don't diss leatherwork from renfaire. I've got very nice and excellent quality items there. You get what you pay for. Btw oxblood is also known as cordovan.
speaking of mixing blacks and browns... I was wondering if one day you might carry a Welsh sporran where the dragon shows a bit more? I have your Welsh model, it's quite beautiful, but the black-on-black dragon engraving is a tiny bit too subtle. Awesome video, by the way, love your attitude toward mixing and matching items of different colours.
Here’s the thing. If the leather you’re wearing has black and brown in it then what you need to understand is that one color is going to be dominant and stand out over the other. And that is the one that you were going to want to make the dominant color. So if you’re wearing a black and brown Sporan and it has bold black outlines and black line work over brown, you’re probably gonna want to wear black shoes and a black kilt belt. The sporran Rocky is wearing right now, brown is the dominant color. So brown would be your main color.
Y'all did a short video once matching the Kilts&Culture tartan with a black and brown fenrir sporran, brown fenrir buckle, brown belt, and it looked friggin awesome! I ended up ordering everything above after the video lol😂
I’m surprised you didn’t mention King Charles mixes leather colors. And I broke the rule and wore dark brown boots and brown sporran to an after 6 gala because the invitation stated not to wear black tie but to wear ‘cocktail’ - it worked…
Brown leather tones can be mixed together...light & dark - yes, but be careful with the reddish/mahogany tones. Mixing black leather can be a disaster too if there are different shades and wear and cracks etc. - especially for a formal affair.
During the day I have worn Brown with a full dress killed jacket vest fly pad people complimented me on how I looked they said it looked great but after 6:00 it's black formal occasion it's black but you don't have to worry about a belt and sporing and all that at a formal occasion because you're wearing a jacket one I don't worry about when I'm full dressed so it doesn't matter if it's after 6:00 and it's a formal occasion I wear black if it's after 6:00 and I'm just going out to the local pub I don't care I have my kill I have my Spore and I have my shoes that's all I need but yes there are those matching matchy people and that's fine that's them me I just like wearing my Kilt does this foreign work does the belt keep my kilt on do my shoes look good and as far as shoes go a lot of people need to remember there's this thing called polish that really helps the look of your shoes Gilly Rogues boots whatever a little polish goes a long way thanks guys have a good day.

I was in the army, black brogues and brown day sporran. Never occurred that this could be a fashion faux pas.

I have worn a brown sporran with black Dr Martens for years.

Isle of skye would look good with either brown or black sporran, as the tartan colors are a little more muted.

Weathered tartans and gray tartans with brown sporrans. Everything else, just go with black sporrans or white fur. Black is more universal.
