Why I'm Afraid of STALKER 2

  • Today, DJ Peach Cobbler experiences a Stalker 2 anxiety attack. After becoming a cult-classic, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise is soon going to receive a sequel in the form of the imaginatively titled: STALKER 2.
But will GSC Game World stay true to the soul of what made Stalker a cult-classic to begin with? In the pursuit of having "modern" features, can what made Stalker special...disappear?

ALRIGHT, so I only learned literally while uploading this video...that the “Complete" 2012 mod that I've been using...adds fast travel, which I literally spent a decent portion of this video insisting shouldn’t be in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, at least not without making it super obtuse and a pain like in CoP or Clear Skies.
I didn’t use fast travel, of course, because I was unaware the mod added such a sickening feature.
I just wanted no more bugs and prettier graphics, is that so much to ask for?
As it stands, this is a crappy oversight, which shouldn’t detract from the thesis of the video. I was looking forward to making just one Stalker video without a major mistake, but I guess I can’t have nice things...

Earlier today I was doing a side mission where I had to kill another stalker, I was heading off to Garbage where he was located but then I looked at the PDA’s Encyclopedia to read up on some anomalies where I heard gun fire and then got a mission update saying to return to Sidorovich. That’s right, the guy I was supposed to kill wandered into Cordon and got killed by some NPCs, not even the player.

Fast travel was quite believable part in Clear Sky, as you had to pay for a guide to get you to places. And yet they managed to limit the amount of guides and the places you can go. It wasn't really necessary but for looting, side missions and some basic back and forth stuff it was nice to have.

The community manager of GSC GW responded to this video on their post on r/stalker: "We love most, if not all, the games that you've mentioned in the video, but as much as we want to make the Zone more appealing to the mainstream audience, the fact that we are based across the globe from the studios that are making these games heavily influences our vision of the gaming trends. While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will definitely be different from the previous installments (a lot of time has passed, technology has evolved, yadda yadda yadda) the unique cultural imprint that every developer is carrying just won't allow us to make the game identical to what our colleagues are making. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was always about loneliness, the struggle for survival, and being just a cog within a grand mechanism, inner workings of which cannot be comprehended by a regular human. It's a feeling many of us can relate to and we hope to let you in on our perception of this feeling."

Stalker had fast travel (CS & CoP) however the difference between it & most games is you can’t fast travel on the spot, constantly. You had to find someone willing to “guide” you, & those guides would ask for payment to take you somewhere.
As long as Stalker 2 keeps this kind of system, fast travel will be fine.

Reload and hide while the dogs kill TWO other stalkers before being put down. Get tutorial mission to kill a few boars. Get one-shot killed by a single boar instantly. Try again and let the totally-strong-and-important (TM) village guardian go first. Boars kill him, then chase me into the village and wreak havoc before killing me. After several more reloads and several failed strategies I found a way to climb into an old car and kill the boars without them being able to reach me. Fetch an artifact as the second part of the tutorial. Get such a dose of radiation, that I barely make it back. Sell EVERYTHING I JUST EARNED just to get healed and not die. Finally walk away from the Rookie village. An emission hits and I have to sprint back to the village and take shelter. Wait out the emission, sit at the village campfire, listen to another STALKER play the guitar and contemplate #1 how totally and utterly fucked I am, #2 why I am doing this shit to myself, and #3 how totally and utterly awesome this game is. This was day 1 of my current playthrough - day 1 of the true STALKER experience. Anything less in the next game and it won't be STALKER.

I really like how in Shadow of Chernobyl you were never the main character, how the world just sort of existed and you went with it. I remember once being with an important character to the story and we got caught in a gunfight with the military. He got shot in the head and fell straight down and I just... sort of stood there... like, no plot armor, no checkpoint, no mission reset, it just happened. You could still carry out the mission with the info on his PDA, but it's like, it was so different to any other game. That's the moment I realized how immersive this game was.

funny story: On my recent playthrough as a mercenary in Anomaly, I was on my way to Sultan(The Bandit's Leader) and his mission for me is to kill a mercenary and that mercenary was on Dead City, but I've never paid any attention to it because my dumbass thought it's all about the money and I don't give a crap even if he's my ally or comrade. Consequently, that backfired because not only did I kill a mercenary in Dead City, but I killed a fellow mercenary with his fellow squad nearby like 3 meters away from him. And I went to Sultan and got my money, but as a result I have a restraining order from never entering the Dead City ever again. A few missions later, I forgot about the squad, but they sure did never forgot about my dumbass face and have any opportunity to kill me in any chances they got. And they sure do... And that's what I learned from the Zone, never be greedy.

In Stalker its not your character or destiny that makes you survive insurmountable odds, its planning, preparation, and a healthy supply of good luck. Very few games have had me stop mid "dungeon" realizing I'm out of resources and not as well equiped as I thought before leaving and grinding for better equipment before coming back. Stalker makes you consider the dangers of just moving to the next region, and if you are unprepared on anything, you're going to be lost to the zone real quick

Honestly, one of my favorite examples of this game not caring about me was when I got a mission from Duty to kill an enemy VIP in the Dark Valley. This was in the Call of Chernobyl mod, and I was just your run of the mill Clear Sky soldier. I fought the military in the swamp, gunned down bandits in the Cordon, kicked freedom ass while pushing through contested territory between them and Duty, etc. Every time I would either have to play my engagements carefully or hole up in a building and take pot shots outside of it while almost always walking away beaten to shit. So when I got to the Dark Valley, I immediately started moving towards the bandit base, when a Pseudogiant decided that my shit was unfucked and wanted to remedy that. Took a whole bunch of mags but I took it down, and then proceeded to make my way back to the enemy base. The whole fight in the base was me taking out the front guards, sniping as many people as I can, pushing in, falling back into a tower, and holing myself up in the tower like a the boogeyman hides in the closet. Took a while but I killed every bandit in the base and just barely came out alive, and decided it was time to go looting to make a profit. Found their armory, and while I was in the building I got a notification. "Defend the base from mutants."
I was all alone. In an enemy base. Where I had just murdered everyone defending it. And the game just told me a horde of mutants were about to come barging in to realign my chakras. Needless to say I decided it was time to run. Unfortunately the horde of dogs outside disagreed. The only reason I lived was because I fell back into a building with military soldiers, and because of my actions on Duty's behalf and my constant killing of freedom and bandits, they were at the very least neutral towards clear sky now. So in other words, if I hadn't been such a duty fanboy, I might have ended up with a squad of really well equipped military soldiers unloading their guns into my chest as a horde of dogs wanted to eat my soul. The game didn't save me because I was important, it was just a series of unfortunate events that I only managed to survive due to previous technically unconnected actions, and even then it was by the skin of my teeth.

Good points actually. But I think that GSC does know that community of Stalker is kinda diferent if you know what I mean, they wont create a world filled with massive amount of popping-out quests that just remind a player YOU HAVE TO DO IT.I really enjoyed all of 3 Stalkers and the one thing I adore is the atmosphere.Thing that you can approach the fireplace with few rookies around it and listen to the guitar song while waiting for the rain to end is more breathtaking than all of this cp2077 hype.Even if fast travel will be in Stalker 2, I wont use it, just because I want to meet some other npc's, take a look at entire environment is around me and feel the atmosphere just like I did 10 years ago

You walk out of garbage, you are ambushed by a bloodsucker in the middle of a night, you barely kill him and without any medkit or bandage you stumble onto a group of stalkers sitting next to a campfire, just drinking and playing guitar. It's honestly the best moment I have ever experienced in games. It just feels so real, even with the shitty graphics you still feel like you are there and so is the stalker Vasya to your left. I didn’t use fast travel, of course, because I was unaware the mod added such a sickening feature.
I just wanted no more bugs and prettier graphics, is that so much to ask for?
As it stands, this is a crappy oversight, which shouldn’t detract from the thesis of the video. I was looking forward to making just *one* Stalker video without a major mistake, but I guess I can’t have nice things...
There's also my omission of the guides in CS and CoP, sorry about that. The point still stands, considering that the feature is obtuse and still requires something from the player...

One thing I love about STALKER is the significance that comes with each action. Each bullet I shoot has the potential to end a life, or save one. If I shoot this mutant now instead if knifing it, I might really be wishing I had those bullets later. Same thing if I do knife the mutant - I use a medkit now that might come in handy in 10 minutes after I end a gunfight. Each item is so significant, and everything costs rubles. Nothing is free or easy to get, and nothing is trivial. You are on the same level as the other bandits and stalkers that will try to gun you do an and snatch your shit.

For any Quest 2 people out there, Into the Radius is LIKE stalker, and there is something to say that you are one of many walking corpses, you even collect their belongings periodically so the research can continue. BUT, the game does have you alone and the only person who can speak to some... entity? Person? Spirit? Illusion? It still conveys that you are just one of many cogs in the meat grinder of a post-apocolyptic, cyrillic, challenging, cosmic horror inspired machine, but you are the only one in a set station, who's the only one conversing with an entity, who also survives longer than expected. It's still pretty fun and very challenging.

In the FAQ's I believe there was a comment that basically confirmed it would be a seamless open world (and a very big one at that), which if integrated with a better A-life system (something closer to the 'warfare' system like in Clear Sky and Anomaly) could be really good and allow the AI to have an even better flow and dynamic than it already does. Apart from this I agree, especially having heard how some of the story plot design documents wanted the original STALKER 2 to play out, there was a LOT more linear storytelling and plot progression, so I hope they've kept the de-centralised vibe of the original games - not everyone is there to help you reach the center of the zone nor do they really care. That being said with them boasting about how big it is I would assume there is alot of 'dead space' inbetween the areas like in the original games which is a good sign; I'd say these games are at their best in some of the least assuming areas. Good video though, hopefully GSC sees this as an oppourtunity to make a true successor to STALKER rather than a AAA clone cash grab.

I found your channel thanks to the game Into the Radius. Fell in love with the loneliness of the setting and the other horrors hiding in the zone. Had to find more, so I read Roadside Picnic and then stumbled onto S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
There's just something so unique to the experiences of this kind of fiction, and I think you really hit the nail on the head with your statement of "When the player is big, the world feels small." I think you really caught some lightning in a bottle with that one.
I can't wait to see more and more of this type of fiction penetrate the imaginations of Western audiences. It's just so damn good 👏👏👏

This as hands down, the absolute best explanation of stalker, as well as what's wrong with so many games these days. I remember loving open world RPGS when they were rare and had all the rough edges and unique quirks and ways of doing things. When I first saw some of those thing be put in other more popular games, I thought, "oh cool, I like that things", but when I actually played it... It felt forced. Wedged in.
Now all games have blended so many genres and popular things from the best games together that each game is a "2005-2015 NOW THAT'S GAMING: Norse Hack'n'slash Edition" - or- "Trapped On An Island Edition" - or my personal favorite - "Opps All Nukes" . While I am worried that STALKER 2 will fall into this nearby trap, I have high hopes for the STALKER community as a whole and our ability and desire to mod the piss out of these games. I really do hope that they see their actual community and what we all want from the game. If it's a giant world, it would be amazing to have a train like in RDR2 as the absolute only way to get around, and even then it should be able o break down or have anomalies or something messing with it, so you might be forced to fight, or get stranded in areas you werent prepared for, I dunno, ust spitballing some solutions that sound kinda neat
