I was really into this game as a kid. I was so excited for the sequel in fact that I wrote a nicely written letter to Warren Spector asking for the game early. Months later, I was sent a box full of Epic Mickey Merch like a cup, a hat, pins, signed sketches from the developers, the official artbook for the first game, and a response back in the form of another letter. The team said they they were having a rough time developing the game and losing moral, but my letter reminded them that they were making the game for young Disney fans like myself and boosted the team's spirit. They even said that when the game released that they would send me a free copy of the game for whatever console I wanted. While I never actually got that copy because the company was shut down soon after its release, it's a moment I'll never forget.
Oh my goodness I am so happy for you. This is amazing, I love when things like this happen. This is what makes the world stay together- the few people who try to brighten the days of other people, even if they don't know it. I'll also say I'm quite jealous of the special stuff you got lmao
Fun Fact about the Clock Tower boss: Within the lore of the game the “It’s a Small World” song was what drove the Clock Tower mad, and the devs originally wanted the player to redeem him a different way. The original concept was the same until the player is brought to its face, where instead of repainting the happy face, the faceplate would open revealing a small chamber containing a record player that the player would destroy to “stop the music” (hence the good path pin name)
I remember being frightened when seeing Mickey die in the game as a little kid. Just watching him melt into a puddle scared me away from the game for a while.
I kept trying to play it, but the blot dragging Mickey away and cutscene where the machine tries to remove his heart with a plunger always terrified me
While I had a higher tolerance to scare factor since I was raised on saw and dead space, I remember the clock tower scaring me a little with its freaky face and especially the music
@@vincentleonard3797 Bro imagine the conversation Disney: Hey how is the concept art going The dev team: Pretty good check out this eldrich abomination i drew Disney: wtf man it's a kids game
One part of Epic I really enjoyed is how they managed to shrug off certain tropes usually associated with video games. Best example would have to be their perfect excuse for using what seems to be the same characters over and over. Mickey even says that these extras all look the same, and Gus later clarifies that they were actually scrapped, old draft versions of same or similar toon, all ended up here.
I love how they also make up for the fact that they all look the same by giving EVERY SINGLE NPC a name. Well, almost, but that’s still pretty damn impressive.
Out of all the games I expected you to talk about, this was not it. I was filled with so much nostalgia watching this because I fell in love with the game the same way you did, a fateful Christmas morning
I am SO GLAD a lot of people in the recent years have finally accepted that this game is a Masterpiece. It may be a flawed platformer, but the story, the style, the concept itself is everything that gets you so involved that it makes you let those little mistakes pass. This game was my introduction to the Nintendo Wii, it didn't age that well in terms of visual quality, but does that really matter? I've made a lot of memories, and I still do. Everything in this game is perfect, in my opinion.
This right here is the series that I think needs a remake/remaster/sequel to more so than any other. A remake where the camera is improved, graphics are enhanced, actions have more consequence (especially in regards to epic Mickey 2 if it’s a collection). That would make my life complete
tbh I would love to see a Epic Mickey with the inclusion of the Scrapper and Heroic Mickey like I honestly wish they added those also because I love how Bastard looking Scrapper Mickey is
Ask, and you shall receive! They really did notice the swell of interest over time. It’s kinda funny you have a KH pfp since I distinctly remember being so butthurt that KH got so much attention as a kid and EM got way less. Now I don’t have to be upset anymore lol
God, just hearing the music from this game makes me feel so nostalgic, it really makes me sad how Disney pulled the plug on this franchise that had so much potential
Horror or not, it’s real fun to hear someone talk so passionately about a game period. Doesn’t matter what you do Pastra you will never get rid of me and a lot of others!
I really appreciate the mindset of "the only way to find out where the line is drawn is to cross it and go completely overboard with it". That was one hell of a power move to pull on Disney
Turns out it’s not so forgotten. They’re releasing a remastered or remake on every current platform. And the difference in visuals is substantial. Better lighting, better and more detailed textures, even remodeled objects. It’s called Epic Mickey Rebrushed. I’m so excited for it. I’ve been wanting to play it for years.
This is... unexpected. Epic Mickey is one of my favorite games of all time and I'm happy you're covering it :) EDIT: Cool to see there are a lot more fans of the game than I expected! Also, a little fun fact: Epic Mickey was the first videogame I ever played. I don't just like the game, but it also means a lot to me on a personal level. Playing it the first time was a blast and it was the same the other 2 times I replayed it. The sequel was also really fun to play with my mom :)
I’m glad at least one person talks about how good of a game this was, Epic Mickey is by far one of my favorite games to ever come out on the Wii and I’m glad it’s getting the attention it deserves.
@@silvaguy7059As a lifetime fan, admittedly it isn’t very well designed in a lot of places. It’s to Mickey Mouse games what Sunshine is to Mario. Amazing World building and an interesting premise with some questionable design choices.
Thank you so much Pastra for talking about this game. I played this game when I was 6 on my nintendo wii and it is still easily one of my favourites of all time. Will you ever talk about the sequel? I remember it wasn't nearly as good, but still quite interesting. Thank you for the amazing videos!
I remember my brother and I playing the sequel a few years ago on our Xbox. We never completed it, and since we don't use the Xbox anymore, I doubt we'll complete it anytime soon.
This game was probably single-handedly responsible for my obsession with music when i was like 6/7. The soundtrack is one of the best game soundtracks in existence imo, and it's criminally underrated.
I love the darker side of Disney, it really shows how the company can make media for everyone. And personally, the game are my favorite form of their media. Kingdom Hearts, despite its admittedly insane story, is still amazing and does delve into darker themes. Especially when you talk about the keyblade war and heartless. Twisted Wonderland is japanese mobile game that recently had a global release and delves into a world where the villains are praised. It also talks about the blot with its recent chapter revealing information about the history of the world and the Shroud family.
It's so refreshing hearing someone talking about this game in a positive light, I had watched some other videos in the past that had a lot of gripes with the game. After hearing them I wanted to write what I think the darker version of the game would be like (inspiration from Suicide Mouse and Alice madness returns). However hearing you gush about reminds me of all the joy and unintentional terror this game had brought me as a child. not to mention its dark as it is if you squint hard enough, and it reminded me that it's ok to love the game the way it was even if the game could have meet something more.
Honestly the game is cool. It sucks it never got the true treatment it deserves. The only problem I had when playing was the camera (god it sucks) but it wasn't enough to keep me from playing. I remember being terrified of this game as a kid, literally only because of the opening haha
I've always loved this game to bits and pieces... But yeah, by the time I was finishing my 3rd playthrough (yeah, seriously), I was just wondering about the things it could've done better. I could say that the choices between being good or evil are rather minimal for the plot... but Mickey isn't an evil character. At worst, he's just impulsive and mischievous. Although there could've been a better incentive to actually ponder between making a "good" choice and a "bad" choice. The fact these are usually so paper-cut clear does make it less interesting. I mean, why use thinner on a pump, which you've been told it makes the thing work shoddily, when paint is obviously the much better option? And the rewards you get with the paint path are usually way better too. The only incentive for such is merely to see a second playthrough of the game, which isn't bad... but it is a little uninspired. And let's be honest, making the thinner path always the bad path, and the paint path always the good path is a little basic. Sure, one is a tool of creation and the other of destruction, but they're just tools. Like folks usually say, "it's the choices that make the man, not his tools", or something like that. Using the thinner cleverly for restoration, or paint in an equally clever way for destruction, that would've been hella creative! They did it well for the platforming and obstacle traversal, why not for the choice making? Now, I didn't mind the extensive side quests, it actually gave me a lot to do as I kept going through the game, and they were a good incentive to explore!... but one thing I don't like is the fact you can't freely revisit older areas in the game. What, you actually didn't manage to find an important item in Tomorrow City, or Tortooga, or the Lonesome Manor? Welp, tough luck, see ya on the next playthrough, chump! Sure, you can buy _some_ items, like the animatronic parts, but these are expensive as heck. Now, this could work as incentive for being thorough with your exploration... after you notice this fact for the first time, by which is then a little too late, which still kinda sucks. I just don't see a natural explanation to why we just can't... go back to the damn thing. We can visit the hub areas, why not the areas they connect to? They're not much of a hub if they don't serve as the hub to something at all times. And this is all why the World of Gremlins, as fantastic as it is in terms of visuals, content and exploration... still ends up feeling super disconnected from the rest of the game. You revisit Mean Street a lot during the game, it's the main hub. Yet you don't return to the World of Gremlins even _once._ Not even during the last part of the game, where you revisit all hub worlds and almost the entirety of Tomorrow City. So... was the World of Gremlins just a lengthy "tutorial"? Just a transitional area? It kinda sucks you can't go back... especially since it also has a proper village. And then there's the stuff that was cut. No, I don't mean the concept art. I mean the areas that were conceptualized, some even being developed, but didn't make the cut. Wonderland, an area based on the vast cut content from the Alice in Wonderland movie! We could've seen the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon, the Jabberwocky! Maybe some of the characters that only appeared in a series of comics that were a direct sequel to the movie, does _anyone_ even know these? They had Humpty Dumpty and the White Queen, and more! How about the other cut area that also made it into the game but we never play through, the Beanstalk Factory? I'll be honest, I don't even know what area of Disneyland parks was that one supposed to be inspired on, but for it to make it into promotional material, even the intro cutscene of the game? It had to be something big, even if the level was never made. Disney Gulch, based on Frontierland, another one (though that one appeared on the sequel, but... well, y'know, it's the sequel). And there's other ideas that didn't fit with the final story and setting but could've inspired cool stuff! An underwater kingdom ruled by an older design of Ursula, that could've been dope! I'll always love this game, don't get me wrong, but it's because of my love for it that I wish it really could've been the best version of itself! That it could be looked at fondly more consistently over the years, rather than as "the game that could've been"!
@@renasilkwood224 heh, I remember being terrified of that one too. I wasn't even aware it was based on a real attraction, as I had never gone to a Disneyland park before.
I played this like 5 times through when i was younger. I found oswald so appealing because, well, he was “the forgotten one.” Story was better than most stuff ive played when it comes to action platformers. I’ve watched almost all the available seriously old Walt Disney films and shorts, seeing characters that i saw in those extremely old shorts being remembered was exciting, and melancholic too. I mean, they were forgotten, how would you feel if you got absolutely forgotten? Most of these characters hadn’t seen the light of day for over 50+ years at that point. Hell, some were from the 30’s. Disney started making cartoons in 1920! And Oswald the lucky rabbit was from 1927! Imagine being forgotten for almost 100 years. Oswald was almost 80 years old and forgotten when epic mickey was made. The kind of feelings that would leave you with, and then you see your copycat. You see he was the one responsible for ruining your utopia. Its a shame we never really saw Julius in the game, Walt Disney’s first reoccurring character. We never got to see characters from Disney’s “Alice Comedies” series of comics. Which is where he all started after-all. It would have been excited to see some of them, to see actual characters from the 1910’s being remembered. It makes sense we didn’t see them because they probably don’t have the rights to them anymore, probably public domain by now.
It's about time someone brought up this ol gem. I remember watching my sisters play it as they got far in the story. As for me? I couldn't make it past the first level on account of how terrifying the first boss was. All in all, this game holds a dear place in mine and my sisters' hearts, I'll bring it up to them next time see them, thank you Pastra!!!
On the concept of the game's art direction, you may notice time and time again that Wasteland is mainly a ravaged and torn apart version of Disney World, as Dark Castle is a abandoned and destroyed version of Disney Castle, the boat rides in the beginning is a ruined version of the "It's a small world" ride, and the Dark Manor in Bog Easy is literally the Dark Manor from Disney World, even has the stretch paintings! The world is shaped and built like Disney World, but more torn apart and ravaged.
One quick thing I wanted to say about the Clock Tower's battle theme: Anyone else notice it was a dark fantasy version of "It's a Small World After All"?
I honestly really like the idea that was used for the concept art, as in the whole "go as over the top as possible, then dial it back bit by bit until it's approved to find out where the line is drawn" It feels like it would result in some really cool and fresh stuff, by finding out RIGHT where something or someone's limit is, and then sitting right on it.
Epic Mickey was such a cool game. Despite being a Disney IP based game, it felt more... obscure I guess, compared to some of the other games on the Wii. Another obscure-like game on the Wii that I really enjoyed was Dokapon Kingdom.
@@chaos1187 Indeed. It's one of those games I wish I could erase all memeory of to play again like it's my first run of it. Another is Xenoblade Chronicles.
Oh wow Dokapon kingdom!! I almost forgot about that game, me and my siblings would always play it, with me usually being the thief class. They weren’t too happy about it bc they knew I’d just keep going over their spaces to steal their stuff 💀 pretty sure my sister was the most competitive, wanting to get the most towns and yet being extremely unlucky. I haven’t played it in ages but now I feel like I should, it was such a fun game!!
I am so happy you're talking about this game. It feels like a game that shouldn't exist (due to how incredibly greedy Disney is with their IPs), but I'm so glad we did get it and that more people are talking about it.
I never expected you making a video on this game but I swear to god, seeing this just gives me flashbacks of the past that I loved, playing as a kid that game was so fricking good and memorable. Thank you
Part of me is going "who cares if it's not horror"-cause sure you have covered things like horror games and such, but you've always put a strong emphasis on art-style and direction. You do a lot of deep dives into art-style and how they help with the narrative of whatever media you're covering, I kinda make that connection to your channel. So yeah, I think taking a chance to go into just darker themes for games through the points you like to point out and draw attention too fits in perfectly. Can't wait to see what's in store for the next one.
This was one of my favorite videos games of all times. I have the art book and it’s one of my most treasured possessions simply because of how insanely creepy the concept art was
I like this content where you delve into the details of horror ideas without actually trying to scare anyone with our own horror. It means that i can appreciate the videos more by considering the aspects of a piece instead of being distracted by being scared of a piece.
Everything about Epic Mickey has fascinated me since I originally played it back on release day. The story, art, concepts, and music are all something that feels so...non-Disney at first glance. I remember being scared of fighting the Beetleworx Pirates in the Neverland stage after finding out they were actual Toons that were forcibly changed into robotic servants of the Blot. Shoutout to the Tomorrowland level, that MUSIC is still stuck in my head.
I think taking the time even as a horror-focus channel to shed light on smaller, darker but not horrific titles would be a nice addition to your channel's lineup of content. I like ooky spooky flesh-rending nightmare games now and then, but a subtle approach to terror and the darkness can be just as interesting and fun to watch, especially if you make more videos like this about otherwise cheerful brands going a bit darker and acting grim for a change of pace even if it's not "on brand" for them.
I’m happy to see you moving away from horror content a bit! I mean, as you mentioned in the beginning, the game still has a kind of dark story, but it still isn’t exactly horror. Still, seeing you cover something non-horror related, especially games like Epic Mickey which deserve more recognition, is something I would love to see you do more in the future!
Game def had the concept art to lean more into horror that’s for sure. I think they got a nice compromise between scary and not traumatizing children in the end at least
Pastra’s covered yume nikki which isn’t technically horror, the upturned which was a horror comedy game. Him branching out a bit into covering media that isn’t really horror but still gives us some fun dark qnd spooky vibes just feels natural.
I grew up with epic Mickey, the title theme alone brings back so many memories of watching my oldest brother play it and they him teaching me how to play it. This game is amazing, thank you for shedding light of this masterpiece of my childhood Pastra!
my favorite part about epic mickey is the soundtrack. every part about it OOZES emotion, and i love how it changes depending on whether you’re good or evil. i might like it too much honestly, i have the entire soundtrack downloaded on my phone 💀💀
Wow this video was a blast to the past! My step mom was the producer working on Epic Mickey 2 so we got a bunch of free stuff from it including the first game which absolutely delighted young me. I forgot all about it honestly, so glad this reminded me how good it was!
i've been trying to remember the name to this game, i remember as a little kid me and my brother would play a game with oswald and mickey with paintbrushes and that wizard scene but i never remembered enough to think of its name, now i know more about a franchise that filled my earlier childhood and a quality pastra episode to constantly rewatch, thanks pastra:]
I absolutely love this video. I’m a massive Disney fan, so getting to see all this amazing commentary of this amazing game was a treat. I adore hearing others talk about Oswald, as he’s easily my favorite Disney character and he doesn’t get the light he deserves most of the time. And just a small little thing to add about the clock tower theme, I absolutely adore that track, as the calliope and melody of its a small world as happy as they normally sound in the actual attraction serve the horror so easily.
Sometimes, with all of the corporatism surrounding Disney and a lot of their… less ethical decisions (cough filming the Mulan remake in a location with internment camps cough), it’s hard to remember that even though the executives might not care about anything other than the dollar sign (that and their approval on social media), most of the people behind the work itself truly put their heart into it. Rewatching stuff like older Pixar films and realizing how mature many of the themes were, watching flicks like Fantasia and just staring at how incredible the animation is, as well as stuff like looking at this game’s lore (which is surprisingly dark, even for the tone this game already has) and concept art for it not only takes me back, but lets me bring that to the present with a new appreciation for it. The world isn’t all doom and gloom, and this game actually reminds me of that, and I respect it for that.
I was so young when I got Epic Mickey that I wasn’t able to play, so I forced my dad to played it for me instead lol. I was so fascinated with the art style that even though I couldn’t play I wanted to see what would happen. One game I would love to see you cover is Darkwood, that game is honestly terrifying with no jump scares with an amazing art style, and it would be amazing to see a video on it.
I honestly didn't expect to see you cover this, but the absolute happiness i felt upon seeing you make a video on one of the games that gave me nightmares as a kiddo is incredible. Please keep doing what you do, love your content!
Just a little correction; Oswald wasn't dropped in favor of Mickey. Walt Disney was working for Universal when he created Oswald. When Disney left the studio, he couldn't take Oswald with him since he was legally owned by Universal. It was only much much later that Disney re-acquired the rights for Oswald from Universal.
I am filled to the brim with nostalgia. Pasta, thank you for bringing light to such a wonderful piece of history. I have a troubled childhood, but I was able to relive such a happy memory through this video. Thank you for giving me a happy memory and for shedding light on the absolute art piece this game is. Props to the game makers.
Oh my god its like you read my mind. I was just talking about this game with some friends recently and they hadnt a clue what i was talking about. Its such a creative masterpiece that has an ascetici c i havent seen matched by any other disney franchise. Thanks for covering this wonderful addition to media, pastra
Epic Mickey and Epic Mickey 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. I fell in love with the story the moment my dad introduced me to the first game. I still go back and play it from time to time, it’s pretty timeless.
Pastra , this is why you’re my favorite UA-camr. I never expected you to do a video on this game. This game absolutely made my childhood, and I constantly played it with my dad when I was younger. This means a lot, thank you for making the awesome content, Pastra! (Also, little side note, there is a reference to Epic Mickey in the remake of Five Nights at Treasure Island! On the desk, there’s a little splotch of ink. And I guess you can say Hourglass was sort of inspired by this game too!)
I thought this game was mostly forgotten about, it’s always interesting to me when people make videos talking about it and seeing comments from all the people that felt the same way.
When I was a kid, my dad bought this game for me as well as the walkthrough guide to go with it. I never played any signifigant part of the game's story myself (I was afraid of the blotlings and thus mostly just ran around the hub world, so it was mostly my dad who played it), but I had this weird obsession with the guidebook, reading it over and over again. It was like I was playing the game vicariously through it. Even though I was scared to play it, I wanted to know what happened and to see more of it. It's one of my dad's favorite games ever, and remains one of my very favorite pieces of disney media purely for the art style and darker tone alone.
I've recently been playing it on my old Wii again, I forgot how much I LOVED this game when I was younger. Not only was it unique, but it made me develop a love for the history of Oswald and the Walt Disney studios itself!
Man, I remember when this first shown on a TV commercial ad, I wanted this SO badly, thanks for making this video so I could remember this beauty of a game
I can't WAIT to play the Rebrush, it's an absolute MASTERPIECE! You're gonna make a video about the new version, aren't you? *Imagine a cute, sideways smirk emote or emoji is here*
I remember playing this game over and over so many times, wish I could play it again. After seeing the concept art I really wish we got that super dark version as much as Pastra.
This game was literally my childhood. Me and a friend always adored it and ive beaten this and the sequel so many times i cant even count, and me and the friend loved to play the co-op on the second one and probably got really close to 100%ing that one too.
I think your decision to make a video about this magnificent game regardless of it not being a horror was a great choice as it brings light to this treasure of a game, I remember playing it on my Wii and later getting it's sequel for my PS3 as I also played the Wii alot as a kid as well as the PS3 but that came later- and this video makes me want to go back and play them And it still does have horror esc tropes to it anyways and seeing the concept art shocked me on just how cool and detailed it is and hearing why it was made to be that way and later changed, hearing the development on it really explains why it's so different and unique and I was just as surprised when I played the game to find it wasn't any usual Disney content So I'm hoping this video makes people want to play the game or go back and play it if they've already got it as it's truly a pleasure to play and has such creativity in it and I can tell you really enjoyed the game and this video has much thought and care put into it (like most of your videos) just as much as the game has the same (I'm also hopin since you've got the sequel now you'll tell us your thoughts on that one as well as both games are terrific-)
Epic Mickey is my absolute favorite game of all time. To see someone talk about in such a positive light after so many “yeah it’s aight” videos is so good. And to think it’s from someone who has a relatively large following too, so more people will be able to see it. It’s definitely a flawed game. But it’s one of the most passion filled, ambitious games IVE EVER played. An absolute love letter that more than deserves a remake to perfect an already great game. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much for covering this masterpiece, I'd almost begun to forget how great it was, and as you say, it appears that it's more than simple nostalgia. Seems like it's time to dust it off again (and perhaps the sequel as well)!
this was one of my favourite games from my childhood, i grew up on this game, i absolutely love it. I'm sure this is where my obsession with the moral repercussions of choices in video games and how so many people are very comfortable with making poor moral choices in games and because of this it makes them uncomfortable when the game shows them the results of their actions came from.
this was my first personally owned WII game, as our parents usually got games meant for everyone, but this was a birthday gift for me alone and I loved it, never managed to finish it cause our WII's sensor ate the dust, but loved it none the less
YES epic mickey was so fun, I didn't think about it so much when I played because I was small, but hearing your points and reliving nostalgia was great
Sadly, my only experience with this game is recordings put in the background of other videos, and that’s a huge shame. Hearing about it now, it sounds beyond amazing and something little me would have adored with how much dark stuff I tended to gravitate towards back then (and still do!) Though honestly it seems very fitting for this game to take more of a backseat. Being about old and obscure Disney characters, it’s almost on brand for it to be a cult classic and not something on the forefront.
It was so cool seeing you talk about Epic Mickey! I can certainly say I didn't expect it, but it was definitely a welcome surprise, and while it isn't a horror game, its nice seeing you talk about any game, horror or not, especially when its a game as great as Epic Mickey!
ohhh my GOD this is video just unlocked a core memory of me looking at the disc for this game when i was like 6 and being scared to play it because i thought it was a horror game 😭😭
Well I, along with several others, didn't expect Epic Mickey to be one of the games you would cover, but I'm glad you did! This game was one of the most influential pieces of media for my child self when it came to the dark/horror aesthetic, as well as solidifying my love for old-fashioned rubberhose cartoons. It's just such a shame that we might never see anything like this from Disney ever again thanks to their desire to maintain their "family-friendly" image, even though there are kids that love macabre stuff just as much as teens and adults do (take me as an example, I was 9 years old when the game came out and I was OBSESSED).
When I first heard of this game announcement as a kid I was instantly pulled in. I Loved the dark twist on Disney, turning old characters and new ones into horrid monstrosities or creepy dark versions. Watched the intro cutscene dozens of times and printed out artwork to tape up in my room. While I wish the game was closer to the concept art of dark dead cities, lands evaporated by an ocean of thinner leaving DBC left isolated on a pillar of rock, and creepyier Cronenberg robots, I love the final result. The blot is also one of my favorite game villains personally and would love to see him represented more in Disney media. I got it as an early birthday gift from my mom and played it immediately; Got stuck sometimes but I did beat it. Forever it remains a staple of who I am and kinda kickstarted my admiration of mascot horror. Over the years I think back on it and would replay it a few years ago to 100% by getting all pins and such. Now we're getting a remake and I'm thrilled beyond belief. I'm definitely gonna replay it soon before the Remake comes out to remember fully how it looks; Sorta prepare myself I guess. I also haven't played in years and it was due for a replay soon anyhow. It also ticks me off when reviewers slam the game for wasted potential or poorly executed, so I'm glad someone I like made a great defense piece for it.
This game is so freaking underrated for no go reason and I'm so happy you made this review. It's so detailed in every way and my personal fav amongst them is the little blotches the come off Mickey. Depending on the path you choose you'll either have more come off you (thinner) or less (paint). On that note it also somewhat hints at the ending you get Which brings me to my next favorite thing *SPOILERS AHEAD* The ending changes slightly when you take the thinner path after Oswald and Mickey meet through the mirror. Little blotches will come off Mickey implying the blot is still apart of Mickey/possibly possessing him (for some reason this is never mentioned in the sequel even if you do the thinner path again and it pisses me off) however this ending like the rest of this game was going to be much darker. Originally Mickey would basically turn into a monster and run lose to cause havoc in the wasteland. This version of him was called Scrapper Mickey and he has two designs as far as I know, one is basically mickey but black/dark purple with bright green eyes and mouth like the blotlings, the second he's much more disheveled with sharp teeth and claws. his original colors are there but some parts are melting and missing and in place those missing spots are sketches. You can look scrapper Mickey on Google and find the art, its really cool :). Sorry about my rambling I just really love this game.
Never finished either game, 1 & 2. Did beat the 3Ds version though- had great music, especially the final boss. Glad to see you greatly enjoyed it. And many others did.
I still remeber, two amazing games that were dragged down by time constrains. They both build great characters and enviorments.I still go back to them from time to time .Sadly we probably won't see or hear of Waren Spector's Epic Mickey after the second game.
HECK YEAH! I’ve always enjoyed epic mickey and I even had a birthday party themed around it, I loved it that much when I was a kid. The dark theme was kinda toned down in the sequel in my opinion and I missed it. I adore how. It actually showed how you changed the fates of a. Lot of different side characters if you did their side quests, a nice touch that gives your decisions more weight and gives the game replaibility. I don’t have my wii nor the game anymore sadly, but It’ll always hold a very special place in my heart. Glad to see you gave this game justice, if anybody could it would be you! Out of all games that have gotten remakes, this one DEFINITELY needs one on the switch, even if Disney interactive isn’t around anymore.
This game will always have a special place in my heart for being the first time I actively researched a certain topic. I became infatuated with the game when I was young and looked into the development cycle which inspired to me to look into the dark side of Disney. Making this game also one of the main reasons I got into horror.
man, I really love this game…! It also reminds me of the “Castle of Illusion” game, both games both bring me a really big punch of nostalgia, happy to see you really loved Epic Mickey too!
Gosh, as soon as I heard you start talking, I could not believe it. I could not *believe* there existed someone as passionate about this game, it's creative worldbuilding, design, atmosphere and... well, everything else, too! I relate to EVERYTHING you just said!

7:14 I did not know the soundtrack changed depending on whether you used the paint or thinner and this, this sounds like what you'd hear when your doom is imminent and there is no hope
This video made me feel a bit nostalgic. As a kid I had a hard time understanding the game but I do remember playing part of it and getting frustrated lmao. I loved this video from start to finish. Talking about the horror aspects in what isn’t necessarily a “horror” game is fun. I recommend checking out A Hat In Time, which although is quite goofy has some great horror in it, especially the DLC content for it. It kinda reminds me of that other game you talked about from the developer of it steals.
I never played Epic Mickey but Epic Mickey, The Power of Two with my sister. to see it being covered by my favourite youtube is just absolute prefection
Sooooooo turns out this game WON'T be forgotten anymore!
you know i had to rewatch this video when i saw the announcements
What's hilarious is that I immediately thought to come to this video and tell you the news, turns out you caught wind of it as well!
Today is a EPIC day, epic bros!

Wow that's amazing
thats so wholesome
Oh my goodness I am so happy for you. This is amazing, I love when things like this happen. This is what makes the world stay together- the few people who try to brighten the days of other people, even if they don't know it.
I'll also say I'm quite jealous of the special stuff you got lmao
Awww
my faith in humanity is restored
Fun Fact about the Clock Tower boss: Within the lore of the game the “It’s a Small World” song was what drove the Clock Tower mad, and the devs originally wanted the player to redeem him a different way. The original concept was the same until the player is brought to its face, where instead of repainting the happy face, the faceplate would open revealing a small chamber containing a record player that the player would destroy to “stop the music” (hence the good path pin name)
Interestingly in the novelization destroying the music destroyed the clock tower
@@supercamborg4218
There was a novel?
I know there was a comic about it.
@@daelen.cclark yeah there was a novel. I got it when I was young
i remember being fucking TERRIFIED of this game when i was really little so seeing it featured on a horror channel years later feels like vindication
That eye thing at the very beginning of the game was the stuff of nightmares.
I remember being frightened when seeing Mickey die in the game as a little kid. Just watching him melt into a puddle scared me away from the game for a while.
I could not play this game as a kid. Way too scared.
I love that they calibrated how far to take the grim aspect by taking it too far and then seeing how much they were told to tone it back.
Not to mention, they likely got much darker than what normally would be allowed as a byproduct :V

I know! This is why I love well thought out games like this
Out of all the games I expected you to talk about, this was not it. I was filled with so much nostalgia watching this because I fell in love with the game the same way you did, a fateful Christmas morning

Yeah this was one of the first games I’ve ever played from my memory
Yeah, I saw this in my notifications and nearly had a heart attack
Mee too , The same way
I LOVE THIS GAME
Never finished it BUT STILL
I am SO GLAD a lot of people in the recent years have finally accepted that this game is a Masterpiece.
Exactly! both games definitely deserve a remaster
The second game needs a bigger do-over, incorporating stuff like California Adventure and putting more of a focus on stuff after Walt.
tbh I would love to see a Epic Mickey with the inclusion of the Scrapper and Heroic Mickey
like I honestly wish they added those
also because I love how Bastard looking Scrapper Mickey is
the remake is real omg 😭
This is one of the games that I could never finish as a kid and I had to grow a couple more braincells to actually finish the game

It's hard beating bo1 nova 6 gas campaign level mission on easy when you're little
I really appreciate the mindset of "the only way to find out where the line is drawn is to cross it and go completely overboard with it".
I heard it's a full-on remake instead of just a remaster. Either way, WE ARE SO BACK.

EDIT: Cool to see there are a lot more fans of the game than I expected! Also, a little fun fact: Epic Mickey was the first videogame I ever played. I don't just like the game, but it also means a lot to me on a personal level. Playing it the first time was a blast and it was the same the other 2 times I replayed it.
AGREED❤❤❤❤❤
@@TheRPGNerd Lol nice, I was afraid of the clock tower as a kid
One quick thing I wanted to say about the Clock Tower's battle theme:
Anyone else notice it was a dark fantasy version of "It's a Small World After All"?
Yup, the clock tower is from “It’s a Small World”
There's a reason for that. The clock tower was driven mad by the song constantly repeating.
@@TheRPGNerd I can't blame the poor guy!
I honestly really like the idea that was used for the concept art, as in the whole "go as over the top as possible, then dial it back bit by bit until it's approved to find out where the line is drawn"
It feels like it would result in some really cool and fresh stuff, by finding out RIGHT where something or someone's limit is, and then sitting right on it.
Epic Mickey was such a cool game. Despite being a Disney IP based game, it felt more... obscure I guess, compared to some of the other games on the Wii.
Another obscure-like game on the Wii that I really enjoyed was Dokapon Kingdom.
dokapon kingdom is... now that's an experience
The remake just got announced, the forgotten has finally been uncovered
The way you talk about these games is so passionate and charming. It always puts a smile on my face when you upload, thank you :)
Whenever anyone talks about Epic Mickey, it warms my cold, dead heart.
One thing about the game that stood out to me was the fantastic soundtrack. The music is honestly gorgeous!
They just announced a remaster and I’M SO HYPED
Well this game did terrify me ngl 💀
AND traumatized me a little.

I loved Epic Mickey as a kid! I haven't heard anyone talk about it for a long time. Thanks for making the video!
Man, I remember when this first shown on a TV commercial ad, I wanted this SO badly, thanks for making this video so I could remember this beauty of a game
I adore this game’s atmosphere and style, the watercolor cutscenes and amazing horror aspects are so cool
I love this game. It’s so cool, but sooo underrated by Disney…
I think your decision to make a video about this magnificent game regardless of it not being a horror was a great choice as it brings light to this treasure of a game, I remember playing it on my Wii and later getting it's sequel for my PS3 as I also played the Wii alot as a kid as well as the PS3 but that came later- and this video makes me want to go back and play them
And it still does have horror esc tropes to it anyways and seeing the concept art shocked me on just how cool and detailed it is and hearing why it was made to be that way and later changed, hearing the development on it really explains why it's so different and unique and I was just as surprised when I played the game to find it wasn't any usual Disney content
So I'm hoping this video makes people want to play the game or go back and play it if they've already got it as it's truly a pleasure to play and has such creativity in it and I can tell you really enjoyed the game and this video has much thought and care put into it (like most of your videos) just as much as the game has the same
(I'm also hopin since you've got the sequel now you'll tell us your thoughts on that one as well as both games are terrific-)
The concept art for this game is my life source
I guess the game isn't forgotten after all.
i cant wait for it to come out
wonder when they'll announce a release date. hopefully it isnt cancelled before then.
this was my first personally owned WII game, as our parents usually got games meant for everyone, but this was a birthday gift for me alone and I loved it, never managed to finish it cause our WII's sensor ate the dust, but loved it none the less
YES epic mickey was so fun, I didn't think about it so much when I played because I was small, but hearing your points and reliving nostalgia was great
Sadly, my only experience with this game is recordings put in the background of other videos, and that’s a huge shame. Hearing about it now, it sounds beyond amazing and something little me would have adored with how much dark stuff I tended to gravitate towards back then (and still do!)
Though honestly it seems very fitting for this game to take more of a backseat. Being about old and obscure Disney characters, it’s almost on brand for it to be a cult classic and not something on the forefront.
Yes! This game definitely needs more attention than it got.
OMG I haven't thought about epic Mickey in years! Such good memories 😁
Also, Clyde looks awesome here! Did you change up his design?
Yes, i think two videos back
When I first heard of this game announcement as a kid I was instantly pulled in.
The Epic Mickey series is probably the reason I really want Oswald to show up in the Kingdom Hearts games!
This game is so freaking underrated for no go reason and I'm so happy you made this review. It's so detailed in every way and my personal fav amongst them is the little blotches the come off Mickey. Depending on the path you choose you'll either have more come off you (thinner) or less (paint). On that note it also somewhat hints at the ending you get Which brings me to my next favorite thing
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The ending changes slightly when you take the thinner path after Oswald and Mickey meet through the mirror.
While the remake isn’t being made by the same company, I do hope the old dev team can be involved in a way
Bro, Pastra is gonna be hyped!
To think a remastered version would appear on the Nintendo switch. Time does fly by!
Epic Mickey is easily my favorite game of all time, and I wish it was on other platforms so I could play it once more
So uhh, good news
coming back here after THE announcement. we're SO BACK
This game played a huge part in my childhood and I’m glad to see others experiences and reactions to this amazing game
Epic Mickey is what happens when Disney doesn’t have to worry about 5 year olds and their innocence.
I remember playing epic Mickey, so much nostalgia, it kinda weirded me out at times though, idk why.
man, I really love this game…!
That shit creeps me out more now as an adult lmao, the atmosphere of this game was insane as a kid
Epic Mickey 2 is just as good as the last one, incorporating new features and a surprising story line as you start to collaborate with Oswald.
Hello from the future. It’s back.
I never played Epic Mickey but Epic Mickey, The Power of Two with my sister. to see it being covered by my favourite youtube is just absolute prefection
The concept art and cut content is so fucken cool
He can make every game look good
