  • Ever wondered what a week without social media would be a like? This week, I didn't use UA-cam, Instagram or Facebook, instead allowing myself to read books for entertainment.
As part of my digital minimalism journey, I've been experimenting with different ways to use social media and smartphones to suit my lifestyle. I've always grown up using the internet, so as I move into adulthood, I'm learning how to reshape my thinking and approach to life without social media as the central pillar. Let me know what you think! Have you ever taken a social media detox for a week or longer? Make sure to subscribe if you are interested in videos like this one.
If you have any questions or further video ideas, feel free to request those in the comments and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!

I think we are, as a society, in a place where using or checking social media is just unavoidable. It is possible to go on without checking social media, but that might make us feel socially isolated. A mindful and conscious way of using social media is what I am striving to achieve. And UA-cam addiction appears to be the hardest one to overcome! It is great to see another young adult talking about and experimenting with digital minimalism. Love your content, keep it up!

What did you decide on declaring "Social media" in the end? To me, "social media" are digital applications specifically meant for interacting with other users of said application. That means things like messenger apps, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, what have you. Things like TikTok have broadened that to include content-consumption applications, but I'm not entirely sure if I'd call UA-cam a social media. It's got many of the same flaws, yes, but I feel like listening to music on UA-cam (to give an example) differs from binging UA-cam for hours upon hours without an end in sight.
Anyway, I hope you'll attempt this for another week. I've heard once that a habit forms after two weeks, and I wonder if that'll hold true for this case too. Definitely now that you've started enjoying just sitting around in silence.

Yes I agree, UA-cam can feel somewhat not like a social media app - but I included it as it is probably the place I consume the most content. WhatsApp maybe should be considered social media, but I would use it entirely for messaging - which I'd consider more important than Instagram, say, for keeping in contact with friends and family. Thanks for watching! I'll for sure do more challenges like this

@@EllaCharlotteJones Great, I'll be looking forward to it.
In the meantime, might I suggest next time you attempt a challenge like this that you do something creative while having those moments without social media? As much as I love reading (and I do love it a lot), reading is still a form of consumption. I wonder what effects it would have if one were to forego consumption of content entirely and move over to a creative experience instead.
I promise I'm not just trying to nudge you towards psychological experiments 🤞
