What if Luke was Aware of the Events in Force Awakens? [Conceptual Re-edit]

  • When attempting to re-edit The Last Jedi I wanted to start from the "beginning". I wanted Luke to be more apart of the events in The Force Awakens. I always thought when Rey first touches Luke's light saber it awakens him. This stirs him to be more pro-active in what's going on in the Universe. It would be in The Last Jedi we discover his reason for solitude and self-exile BUT we would see a willingness to train Rey properly if not eccentrically.
After the events of this video...
Later, in a surprise return, Luke would fend off Kylo Ren (after Rey and Finn have fallen) on Star Killer base. Luke will see Rey and Finn off safely before returning to his hiding place... but would awaken R2D2 so the map... remember that?... would lead Rey back to him.
Further details of my re-edit will depend if there's interest. This re-edit goes beyond story. It's a character driven edit where characters "shape" the story.
    Thanks for reading and watching!

The concept in this video is the "foundation" on how I approached my re-edit of The Last Jedi. Please read the description box for further details. Because there are dozens of re-edits out there I chose not to add to the noise, but if there is further interest from people about my approach I can create a video embellishing more details of my re-edit of The Last Jedi. If not I thought this video would open some discussion in "what could have been". Thanks for reading.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the edit in the video is a "rough cut". There is definitely room in improving it's execution.

Interesting edit. Perhaps you could tell me how you avoided it from being blocked Worldwide for copyright infringement? I did an 11.5 hour livestream talking to camera with no footage of any Disney movie shown on screen, and it was blocked Worldwide for the use of the audio from Luke finally confronting Kylo on Crait which is a short dialogue scene without soundtrack. I had left it running whilst I transcribed their dialogue with a view to improving it by rearranging their lines. That was enough to fall foul of Disney. I don’t see how I can upload anything when the rules are this restrictive, but then I see others using clips in their critiques and making their own edits with soundtrack and the video is five months old and I can somehow still see it.

This edit is really great. Luke defiantly should’ve been in the movie more than just at the very end of the movie. He should’ve been a major character and not someone clouded in mystery in The Force Awakens.

This is awesome. I enjoy the pacing and it mirrors the younger version of Luke in The Empire Strikes Back. His concern out weighs his own needs and he then acts to help his friends and those in need. Something that was gravely overlooked in TLJ.

Awesome edit! Would have been nice to have Luke more in Awakens. It would have been a great throw back to A New Hope when Obi Wan felt Alderaan's destruction. Not to mention the whole the student has become the master part of it. What could have been.

Are you planning on doing an edit of the Sequel Trilogy like DKR? If so, may I make a suggestion? Cast Kylo Ren (at least while wearing the mask) as Hugo Weaving. There is a lot of great audio to work with their. For example, in TLJ when Rey asks why Ren killed his father, he could reply "The only verdict is vengeance. A vendetta held as a votive, not in vain," from V for Vendetta.

That's great! haha! I can see it now, Kylo reciting the "V" monologue. I can't see it more than a quick clip unless you extract more Hugo dialogue from his many other movies. Maybe when Kylo takes his mask off he is agent Smith from the Matrix haha

Huh that entire lightsaber-hallucination sequence, was it always that chopped up? If it is, it felt kinda rough... I know it's suppose to be disorientating, but it got so many cuts! Anyway, lovely edit! Interesting choice for darkening all of Luke's scenes!

I kind of like the take on Luke's character in TLJ, but I think that he should've tried to resurrect the Jedi order multiple times and fail to get to that point (and maybe add his students becoming siths/Dark Jedi or something just to add to the pain, Snoke being among them). Maybe the new canon books can fix that.

I think the scene would be more powerful if the vision just ended in Luke opening his eyes. I like the idea but now it just feels a little back and forth, breaking up the intensity of the vision.
The cutting between Luke and the firing of Starkiller base breaks up that scene as well, and in that way it loses its momentum. Assuming that this is a part of the opening sequence of The Last Jedi, it would maybe work better like this:
    - Rey runs out of Maz' castle and looks back
    - Luke looks out across the ocean, knowing that something reconnected him to the Force
    - Rey runs off into the woods
    - Luke looks down, troubled, sensing that something terrible is happening
    - Starkiller firing scene happens
    - Luke drops onto his knee and grabs his heart, sensing the tragedy that just transpired. He pants, looks up to the sky, and sees the glowing red of Hosnian Prime
This way, it's not as back-and-forth, keeps the momentum of the scenes going, and still involves Luke. It also does the whole Star Wars Rhyming thing -> think about Yoda and Ben both sensing Order 66 and the destruction of Alderaan respectively, and Chirrut saying that "The Force moves darkly around a creature that is about to kill".
Anyway, just my thoughts! Would love to hear what you think about that, and look forward to seeing more of your work!

There's definitely room for rearranging and repacing. This is, after-all, a rough cut.
My efforts in making a fine cut rendition of the re-edit died months ago, however, if I pursue it again I'd certainly incorporate suggestions.
In regards to your comments, I tend to edit by having the music shape the moment, however, your suggestions warrant some re-evaluation on my part. I think I tried too hard to bridge Luke with the destruction of the Republic by trying to create solidarity that what Luke is seeing through the force was the "destruction of the system" and not Leia (as the scene was originally intended). So maybe pulling back on that some (and not intercutting so much between Luke and Star Killer Base) would alleviate any disturbances in momentum.
One last thing not mentioned earlier. My re-edit would "combine" TFA and TLJ into one film. This would take paragraphs of explaination so I can't go into it yet. The reason I'm able to use some of The Luke footage so early in TFA was because I never intended to use it later in TLJ.. meaning... more than half TLJ is cut out. No Leia getting blown out into space, no mission to Canto Bite, no Rose Finn relationship, no infiltration of Snoke's ship, etc etc. Again, reasons for this would take time to explain.
My focus, at the moment, is mainly on concept. So far my execution is a bit sloppy, but, like I said, if there is interest I can certainly refine and redefine my edits with some collaboration and evaluation!
      I appreciate your input!

ponquinful I wouldn’t say that exactly. Luke definitely still believes in the Force, just not in the Jedi. In his eyes, they were blind to Palpatine’s rise and got themselves killed. Now whether or not you agree with him is another story.

@@georgecampbell3687 I guess that when I say Luke doesn't want force users I mean that by him refusing to teach new students he is dooming them to be killed or turned to the dark side. Also he isn't searching for force sensitive people either which is how most force users seemed to learn about the force in the past. Otherwise they end up as people who use the force as a parlor trick and little else.
Remember, the Jedi were seem more as monks or Buddhists in a way, you don't need them to teach you to be a good force users, but you do need them to learn from their mistakes in the past and be wise with their use of the power.
It's as if all Buddhists got killed in the world but people who want to be new Buddhists now have to start all the teachings and history from scratch rather than being slightly guided by someone with way more knowledge than all these beginning students

The sad thing is, I’ve seen several other videos kinda like this one, written by fans who don’t work for lucasfilm, and may not have much directing experience, but rewrite The Last Jedi and make it far more better than how the actual movie came out. If any of you happen to like The Last Jedi, I respect that. At least you walked out of the theater feeling content and happy with the movie you were waiting two years for. But as for me, the script was weak, characters underdeveloped(don’t even start me on snoke) and a total desecration of Luke. Sorry, I’m getting carried away here. Thank you, Jamin, for sharing with us a little bit of your version of episode 7, I would like to see this be more fleshed out into your version of episode 8! No matter what lucasfilm decides to do with Star Wars, I think it’s people like you who will write the better stories in the long run. Thank You!

    • @jaminschmitt
      @jaminschmitt  5 років тому

Because of all the re-edits out there, especially Ivan Ortega's, I abandoned this effort months ago. People talk about "fixing" The Last Jedi, I don't think that's the correct word. Film is an "art". Story telling is an "art". People take away different meanings based on their own experiences. Having said that I feel that Lucas Film has dropped the ball in their continuation of these films. A lot of people have since then been trying to pick up the pieces.
The biggest take away from TLJ is that I stopped caring about any of the characters. My efforts, like so many others, was to retell the story that I would care about them. Kylo can potentially be the most menacing villain we've yet seen. Snoke's sudden and unceremonious demise could spearhead an effort to show that Kylo was manipulating him all this time. There are still ways to mend characters that have lost their integrity and create a Universe we can care about again. With this video I merely wanted to introduce a Luke that is still integral to the trilogy, not a Luke that has given up.
But I also don't want to beat a dead horse.

    • @rileytrader9472
      @rileytrader9472 5 років тому

Jamin Schmitt Exactly. The essence of Star Wars should be dependent on the characters, and well written ones at that. Luke and the Jedi didn’t always win, and sometimes the bad guys had the upper hand. That was relatable. We can identify with people even if they are fictional, because they go through similar things we do in the day-to-day life.
It’s very interesting how we all care about the different aspects of “art”. You ponder about characters and their development, and I think deeply about the story and plot. They both go hand-in-hand with each-other, and are both equally important. Like I said, episode 8 had probably the weakest story of the Star Wars films. With such a character and story driven franchise, I was just shocked at the lack of both in 8.
Even the prequels deserve some acknowledgement. Yes, I agree that the acting was not top-notch, and the effects do look dated by today’s standards, but the Stories they told were rich, and they probably equal or tower the originals as far as the stories are concerned. But it did lack motivating characters, plus with very technical dialogue, so I’m totally fine if no one gives a crap about the prequels.
Well, you happen to be reading this, thank you for hearing me out, and I really do share your reasoning on characters in general! I have probably been watching your channel since mid 2013, and my buddy and I still quote lines from your Mark Hamills joker/emperor videos. Thank you for your amazing editing skills and making us laugh! Keep up your good work!
