Sam speaks about being embarrassed at how revelatory this idea is, and that's how I felt when MR discussed the book How the South Won the Civil War. Just hearing the title really struck me, because I'd never really thought about it this way, but the South really DID win the civil war in a lot of ways. Black people were no longer slaves, but they certainly weren't free, and the Confederacy persisted in all but name through to the present day. The fact that the civil war was fought to either end or sustain slavery has been heavily diluted in the public consciousness, due in no small part to the influence that Confederate states hold over the education system, and the right still talks about "states' rights", which was always a racist con.
The South didn’t win the war, but they won the peace. Despite the best efforts of Grant and his administration Reconstruction had been fatally weakened by Johnson, even without accounting for the inevitable wavering of Northern determination to enforce equality.
i think the thing is though, though the north had plenty of radical and abolitionist support they're arc ultimately was towards wage based capitalism rather than slavery based. The south, and the global racist movement in general, won in many ways but the destiny of black people being an underclass of labourers in the cities was always a goal for the north (not to mention with slavery itself still existing in the penal system) - as they represented a shift in the dynamics of the emerging american ruling class
@@portmantologist oh of course, the north had a huge national and international backing of abolistionists amd radicals - but its interesting to consider that a lot of them, even Lincoln himself i believe, were aware of and maybe concerned with the rising 'wage slavery' stemming from the burgeoning industrial revolution. all to say i suppose is, it was, like many civil wars are, based in economic terms more than political
That’s…no, that’s not quite correct. Reconstruction failed due to first Johnson and then fading determination on the part of the Northern public. By 1876, there were a number of court decisions that undid the progress either made or sustained. In other words, it was far more than the efforts of the Federal Government-especially considering how hard Grant went to protecting the freedmen. Numerous times he enforced martial law in Southern states, but that could only stave off the inevitable regression.

Lincoln's biggest mistake was not executing the confederate leadership and granting condfederate soldiers amnesty. So many problems over the centuries after could have been avoided.

It's astounding how distinctly recognizable these enemy's of civil rights are in our "modern age". It also illustrates how outrageously ludicrous and brazenly dishonest it is to claim that America is currently "colorblind" and that all this is "ancient history". It is so abundantly clear the same exact mentality is still with us and still holds immense power in our society. The labels may have changed but the people truly haven't.
