Regarding the homeless clutter, I've made a rule for myself since I've started decluttering my home, that whenever I think of buying something new, apart from thinking about if I really need it, I ask myself where it would go. I only buy the item when I know where its home is going to be
Hi! I'm a Computer Engineer major (graduating this fall), and took a lot of electrical engineering courses as well. I've been watching your videos because my living areas have become an absolute MESS from focusing so much on school and work (finals and whatnot, you get it!). To add on to your frustration about so many different cords: I absolutely get it! But the answer that you might not like: we need different cords due to the amount of power delivery & electricity going to each device. Your phone needs a lot less power than your laptop, which needs a lot less than your TV. The cords & wires are adjusted so it delivers just the right amount of power without wasting any and for safety reasons, such as avoiding big bursts of electricity that might ruin things (your device, your wall socket, anything that's connected by electricity in your home). There are lots of wire routing/organization suggestions out there for computer & desk setups, especially in the computer enthusiast community! It will take time, research, and looking at your own space to figure out the best wiring setup for your home and tech areas, but it can be done! :) Thank you so much for your down-to-earth personality and easy-to-follow suggestions. I've become more motivated and confident when I can take care of myself and my own home.
So AC to DC adapters and such use different size plugs and thickness of wires to be matched to what is needed for optimal power delivery? I see that with newer USB type C some of that is passed off to the wall brick and can then be used for both your cell phone and laptop and each device controls how much power to receive. It seems like USB is being used more for more variety of devices also.
@@Seanwmca I've seen that, too! However I don't believe there will be a one-size-fits-all as far as charging and power, especially when companies need to provide solutions for differing international power standards. Some companies also want to stick with proprietary parts. We can only hope a singular standard might be realized one day!
About random electric cords, I use my label maker to make a label that says what the cord goes with. Then I wrap it around the cord like a tag. Works great on detachable cords. That way there are no "homeless" cords laying around & I don't wind up having no idea what a cord bongs with.
Yes! We recently did this! But just used some mini color sticky notes, I have neat writing. Figured out the cords & chargers, labeled & got rid of ones that seemed old, bent, frayed or didn't seem to charge. Labels are life!
Our families have a rule, no objects as gifts. Donations, experiences, gift cards, food, consumables only. Did this 2 decades ago, everyone loves the policy. We also got rid of expectations of gifts on certain days of the year if you are over the age of 16
Us too! Except for my parents, we've all stopped gifts across the board (and that's okay, exchanging a couple of gifts with my parents for Christmas is just fine). We all like good booze and food, so we put the money there, and just enjoy the time together ❤️
My family also stopped gifts with the exception of Christmas where we will get a Deodorant and body wash set cos we all know that'll be used. My parents get us the same brand every year cos they know we'll like it and use it and honestly it's brilliant
I had an impromptu decluttering session and threw out all my "I might be able to use this for something" and "just in case" items- my daughter and I laughed when we saw that I'd kept the legs off my old futon 😄
Giggle! I kept the legs off my chickens feeder for some reason. The feeder is hanging and has never and will never set on the ground. They must be out of my house before sundown!!! 🐓
The "aspirational version" of myself is a new idea and you're so right! I've made progress by decluttering things from my "past self", but hadn't thought of the aspirational perspective. I'm going to look around my house now with that fresh idea!
I had to come to terms with "Fantasy Dee". She does ALL THE CRAFTS. "Real Dee" sews. I had to (painstakingly) part with the non-sewing craft items: paints, glue gun, cricut etc..💁🏼♀️
I laughed at the “good box”. Growing up we would and still do make fun of our mom. She could never throw away a “good box”. Well she has passed it on to her kids and I hate to admit I passed it on to my kids. If the box was really save worthy mom would then get out the contact paper, now it’s he perfect box for something. Lol
I have empty boxes that I don’t like but my cat plays in them . I do put limits on the amount because I would be wall to wall boxes if my cat had a say lol but I keep her favorites and that makes her happy
OMG! Yeti type mugs! I have a whole kitchen cabinet full that my husband won't get rid of. I finally told him every new one he has to get rid of one. So what did he do, he packed some in a storage bin and put out in the shed. He said for camping. We have NEVER gone camping in the 30yrs we have been married!
OMG. You just gave me permission to pitch the attachments that came with my immersion blender ... I haven't used them in the 20 years I've had the blender & they take up so much awkward room! Thank you!
Great video! I do want to say, I have a good reason for multiple spatulas and other utensils. :) My husband and I don’t fill up an entire load of dishes in the washer in just one day, so if I use the spatula to flip my eggs one morning, chances are that the next morning, that spatula is still dirty. I use two of everything basically, plus multiple serving spoons for parties. :)
This video is awesome! Only thing I do not wish to change is my super random mugs and glasses collection. They tell a story of all years of my life. The random vintage teacups at a market when I was 13, things my parents or other people gave me when moving out, the first (mighty ugly) flowery mugs I bought for myself at 19, heirlooms from my love's grandma, the ugly mug at the thrift shop that just looked at me with puppy eyes like "no one wants me", the kitsch yet also nice christmas gift, the glasses of festival with my love 15 years ago... It would look so neat to replace them with complete sets, but I like it as it is and our guests are used to it too and find it cute ^^ Otherwise I am working on a giant declutter and many of the items that need to go fall into boxes mentioned in this video, which is not confronting at all XD
When you got to the 'homeless items' and said they could be seen left on a dining table I felt sooooo relieved I am not alone. I was beating myself up in frustration and feeling guilty all the time because of this. And since I am finally writing the comment below your video - thank you so much for all your good advice and kind helpful words for people like me drowning in their own clutter. I try to listen to your videos at least one per day to learn something new, to inspire myself and find new ways to organize my life and home. Cheers from Poland!
As someone who teaches cleaning, organizing, and sorting - your videos are kinda awesome. I've been running my students through 'one area a day' for over a decade. (Though, I do not advocate minimalism, but that's another ramble.) You mentioned boxes. I keep and collect cardboard boxes, but I run through them FAST. A cardboard box wrapped in duct tape can last me years, where most plastic containers I buy places die in weeks or months. Most of the time, if I have something in a container, it's because I access it a lot, and I want it organized. I also give cardboard boxes to my students to use. I can almost always find a cardboard box of the right size and shape for storage in my garage, but it might take me three stores and hours of shopping to find the right plastic bin. My students are often very disorganized and don't have the money for new storage - but the boxes I give them and they get to decorate and label work really well for them, too. I often forget most folk view cardboard boxes as an enemy, not a tool. (Though, I am very picky about the boxes I keep, and often do not keep a lot of boxes products come in, because they are finicky and annoying. I know some folk who move often will keep TV and other boxes for moving, but even that is a lot of clutter unless you move once a year or more. In my opinion, at least.) I also keep lots of charging cables, mostly to pass out to students who lose and forget theirs. I always seem to have a plethora of extra cables that I roll up and twist tie (something else I never seem to run out of?) and then make sure to have 2-3 of the most common kinds of charging cables with me. Most of my students have mental illness, developmental, physical, or other disabilities, so those are a constant in/out cycle for me. Your advice is great. It's making me review a bunch of my own stuff and make sure I'm keeping to my own systems and principles (though, I don't think I'll ever be an early riser.)
Yes, ALL the cords & stacks of papers! Love your idea of discarding all of the packages of items like snacks, diapers, etc. and putting them away, instead of them sitting in our open spaces, on counters etc. Thank you! 😊🙌💜
My husband is a lot older than your husband and mine saves boxes and it works on my nerves. After thirty seven years of marriage we don’t save boxes from everything anymore I had to put my foot down. Thank you for sharing
You are exactly right! I’m so guilty of buying “the second “ thing just in case I run out. I am pretty good about combining bottles of things but still finding seconds. Thanks for sharing this video. You have great ideas and are an inspiration! 😘
What if the first thermometer head breaks? Boom 2nd one at the ready. Kid decides to cut the Alexa cord? Boom there's one that works in the old cord box. Big food processor breaks? Boom there's the attachment for the immersion blender. I have had so many things like this that I am so glad I have a backup or workaround!
Great video! I would love a segment deeper into aspirational clutter. I think it can be a blend of knowing you don't have to give it up, just not now/right season. And you mentioned that on this one and it can be reassuring and accurate. But I also think digging into more of why we keep it when it's not just the wrong season, it's 99% not EVER going to happen. Whether that's mourning the season has past (my tennis raquet just went away for good after not being used 15 years), accepting it, or whatver, I'd love more tips for moving through that. (And maybe more on the most common aspirational clutter: entertaining? fitness? crafts? )
I suggest you do a time will tell box, if you find yourself needing the item then you can take it back out but put a date on it and if you don’t use it by that date then you can rid yourself of the guilt to get rid of the item, see The minimal mom for more info on it
You really hit the nail on the head about mourning. I think some clutter (not all, for sure, but some) has a LOT of emotion attached to it. For instance, at one point in my life (like 20 years ago!), I was really into making homemade cards and LOVED it. And I made time for it. I haven't made time or had time for that now in 20 years. But because I did love it and also because I learned about stamping and cards, etc, from my beloved auntie - I hold onto all the supplies. And I have a LOT, like a whole closet full. The stamping and card-making is so emotionally tied to my aunt, who passed away about 10 years ago now, and I don't want to let go of all these things. That's just one small example. I think therapy can truly help people to let go of physical items that are actually obstacles to the life we want now. I plan to seek a little therapy to make it easier to let go of a lot of stuff I still have from when my now-adult son was a child, too. I loved that time in my life, but it's past time to move on. Not forget, but just move on in regards to too much stuff!
I love your videos. Your tip about spatulas was a total surprise for me. I polled some of my family and friends, and they had multiple spatulas, too. The upshot of these conversations was that one friend told me how handy her fish spatula was. So now, instead of ridding myself of my several spatulas, I’m adding a fish spatula to the mix. I’ll make up for it by getting rid of a couple of my really good boxes. 😀🐟
For almost empty shampoo or conditioner bottles, I keep a travel size bottle in the shower and decant the leftover into that. Better yet, switch to bars.
I’m guilty! Of a lot of things. Like spatulas! I keep 3. It’s inevitable that 2 will be in the dishwasher when I need one. Well there-an excuse for keeping more than one. When I was in my 30’s I probably had only one and no d.w., so when I needed one, I had to wash that one before I could use it again. Many times I wished for more than one of anything.
My husband has paperwork around his chair in the living room and save bigger boxes. I do have 2 spatula’s,1 for greasy foods, 1 for cooking eggs which doesn’t make sense, but I do use them. I also have too many wooden spoons. I am making changes in my other habits. Thanks to you. 👍
I started labeling the shelves in the bathroom cabinet so that my family might 🤞 put the towels away on the correct shelves - or at least stop pulling out random towels hoping for one the right size!
Usually boxes were kept for at least a month, in case the item had to be returned for any reason. But agree boxes and paper are taking over our lives. I'm flattening boxes now & have a rack on the door to file paperwork. Am also removing food packaging straight away. Your explanation of the psychology of clutter is so valuable. LOL!!! I keep “really good boxes.” In my defense, I do have a place to store them, and I DO reuse them…I promise. I am a school teacher, and we are required to tear down our classrooms every year…it’s part of our check out list. Anyway. I rebuild the boxes to use for them for summer storage.
We really need videos that address the needs that teachers have. Does anyone have solutions for these needs? ie, Dealing with so many papers that you need for class, the papers that need to get graded, the fact that we can't just clean everything every day -- because grades are due or that it's exam week , the handouts that students need to write on (not everything can be digital). Any other teachers or instructors here to weigh in on your paper clutter???? Or that during lockdown, I had to bring home every lab worksheet, all the reference books, and other materials needed for Zoom meeting that had been stored in at least 3 different rooms on campus. Or... that we have to bring work home all the time --- so our evenings are not available for house chores all the time.

I'm looking for advice with my household tasks that I can't manage because of all the time that is required when you are an instructor. Our profession means that you ALWAYS bring school work home --- I could easily have work to do 24/7. So.... I get behind with my household tasks. Most of the videos that are out there are from Mom's not instructors --- Pocketful of Primary is about what she does in her classroom -- I didn't see any advice about how she keeps up with household duties even with her gym schedule and grad school on top of her classroom duties. Our grandparents never threw anything away but we also don’t have the same quality of items anymore. Things are made to be replaced nowadays where in the past things were built to last and be repaired. Now we throw out and get new ones
So thankful for motivational videos like this. I donated stuff over a couple of years & some charity shops register you for tax purposes & then send you details of how much they have raised by selling your stuff. Currently £300! I find that spurs me on to donate even more.

I am so guilty of extra items in my home! I recently went through my dishes and all but 1 kid has moved out of my home so the house of 7 went to a home of 3! Boom cleaned it out. In the garage it goes! Keeping there because holidays they come home and I am not going to go out and buy more to once again having the extra clutter. You give some really good advice. Yes my husband is a box keeper..lol
I open all shipping packages & boxes in the garage beside our recycling bin. I Remove address & other labels, keep a box cutter hanging above the bin, break them down & out they go! For plastic bags, if it’s a blue/white Amazon bubble bag, I do save those for returns as UPS can re-use them to ship. Other thin plastic bags get turned inside out & used to line waste baskets-at least they aren’t a total loss.
About keeping boxes- sometimes you need it for the warranty, especially with gaming systems. I worked at gamestop and ALWAYS recommended that people keep the boxes for gaming systems and expensive accessories like headsets. Nintendo is a big one for requiring boxes.
Guilty! We got a new sofa a couple of months ago. The other one is still kept as a second one.... In case of .... hmmm... It's in the middle of everything just taking up space. It's not even comfy. LOL

I agree with you totally EXCEPT the meat thermometer. you love that thing , Its perfect it always works and then one day, the the "expletive" stops when you have a house full of people to feed and you think you are gonna poison them with raw Poultry.(or dry and over cooked) Keep the spare in that particular area!!,all else your correct and I am in a Scurry to purge.....ok I am signing off to pair down my multiple sizes of spatulas!! LOL

Had the same thought, plus the one she’s using is battery powered for sure and I doubt the freebie is. So if she kept the spare, a dead battery wouldn’t be a problem…
I was skeptical of decanting for a long time it's annoying to have to wash the containers so often but it defiantly 100% promotes USING the thing u put it in it so it makes sense to do it if you want to use all of what you buy
I seriously just bought another one of my favorite spatulas! Haha! But I do have more than one favorite. It depends on what I'm cooking, and like someone else mentioned, not wanting to wash one that's still waiting for the DW to be run, which doesn't happen every day here. But my kitchen/house are not cluttered. I've been doing what you're teaching for 30+ years and agree with and live pretty much everything you say.
I know this isn't the video for this but I had a really hard time decluttering my clothes yesterday until I had a breakthrough thought, so maybe this can help someone reading who is decluttering clothes I had a lot of things that I absolutely loved but couldn't wear Because they needed something else to go with it that I would have to buy so i made the decision that "if I need to purchase something else just so I can wear this then it can go" Made decluttering my closet so much easier because I also realised that by getting rid of that item, I would also be saving money Eg, I had this beautiful flowy mute pink top and I had nothing to wear with it, I knew I'd have to look for & buy a matching skirt or leggings; there was absolutely nothing in my closet that I could pair with it so I just gave it away 💘
But also, keep a few of the beautiful things when you absolutely love them. Many times jeans work with everything, or maybe create a new unique style with what you have already. And your friends might have something they don't like anymore that would look nice with something you have. I'm actually sorry about some of the things I decluttered a few years ago :(

Omg my husband saves all the boxes for his electronic purchases too! He says he keeps them because the item has a warranty so he keeps the box and tapes the receipt to it. I tell him as long as he can store it out of the way then fine. And we have actually needed a few of them lol
My brother is the same way. He says it's important to save the boxes with the receipt for at least the first year or whenever the warranty expiration date is. I know the box for my microwave is over two years old now. But I'm pretty sure the box has been filled. I think the biggest problem with letting go of items is where do they go. It's hard to just throw away perfectly good stuff. Knowing where something will go would be very helpful. My brother recycles so the boxes have a destination. But what would you do with the extra two pitchers? We get into the mindset that we worked hard in order to buy things. Yet my sister is constantly telling me to get rid of things. While she can easily discard items, I have more trouble letting go. And unless I know where items that I worked so hard for are going because I can't just throw them away.
@@vickiepatterson1748 Vickie, I understand how you feel. I have a mindset that allows me to feel that "someone else" can make use of it so then I donate it to Salvation Army. I feel it is going to be put to good use instead of cluttering my drawer space.
@@vickiepatterson1748, that's what I do with boxes from stuff with warranty on- I keep them and repurpose them as storage boxes. If I need that box later for returns, I can always use it. If I didn't keep the box, I would be stuck with a faulty item I cannot return. Somehow, I do not like to waste a lot of money just for the sake of decluttering.
Yes! About the wires! I want to do that trick you talked about in another video about labeling the chords because part of it is not even being sure what they go to, so you don't want to risk throwing out something important. But my husband is such a culprit with electronics, wires, "nice boxes" 🤣🤣
The extra probe for your thermometer is for checking your ambient temperature- ie your oven temperature (surprisingly the temp you set your oven at will not be the number it says Love your channel
You inspired me to throw out some dated papers I don't need. I can add something else to your list--address labels! Honest, I have hundreds I get from charities. How often do we actually use snail mail these days? So I threw 90% of them away (even if they do have pictures of cute puppies and kittens!)
You should summarize everything you say in a list at the end because I want to take notes but I can't always take notes bc I watch these vids at work when im rolling silverware :) tysm

Great ideas.... in regards to the little bit left in the bottles, I will mix with just a tiny bit of water and I put them all in one squirt bottle and use it to clean the toilet or counters in the bathroom. Seems to work for me!

My husband literally has a stack of empty shoe boxes in his office as I type this. He also has phone boxes from 5-10 years ago. My prob is the dishes we never use, and gadgets we never use. That’s the problem with tons of cabinet space in the kitchen; it’s an excuse to hoard. 🥴🤷🏻♀️
My son is one to keep all boxes, actually, I'm I'm o ly one who throws away abox I get. Lol I go thru and break the boxes down to get rid of them. Although I have found that after I've tossed them, I end up actually needing one! Not all the time but it's happened.

@@hschultz3975 I said I liked the idea, not that I was going to buy containers. I have a few that I've had for years that I use in the kitchen like she describes. I also have a couple fabric covered boxes that I keep the food processor parts and other items in. I'm fully aware of fiber vs. plastic, which is why there are always extra boxes in the house.
Think I will review my kitchen now. I hav a few glasses which I do use though but I have some wine glasses that I don't use coz I don't drink wine so gona look at gttn rid of those! Thanks for this video Some good things in this video for me to look at
I agree with so much of what you advocate in your videos, specifically about decluttering. Do you have any suggestions on dealing with other household members (not kids) that are unwilling to declutter? We agree on the important stuff (religion, politics, etc) but living with too much stuff is becoming a topic of constant disagreement.
Start with your items (stuff you bought/own). As you make progress others in your home may be willing to try decluttering as they see you reaction to the process. Other option is use the container method, give their stuff boundaries, it must stay in this cabinet, closet, their room, etc. Tell them they can keep whatever they want but it must stay within that container/ space.
I love all my spatulas lol, doing better on the boxes,and very interested in the aspirational things. I do keep a second on hand of my beauty products and a few other items because I hate getting out of the shower and forgetting to put shampoo on the lost, then running out. I do have a home for these seconds though and I think that makes the difference.
I've been following you for a while now...love it, of course. Everytime, I watch, I let things go :D You mentioned papers.. did you ever thought about digital clutter? I have a lot of this and I am missing ideas about digital clutter, it's so overwhelming and I until now I am not capable of organizing it.. and now: I wish for a video for digital clutter :D
My husband keeps boxes, too!!!! He says things like electronics will bring more money if you go to sell them when you have the box it came in. 🤷🏼♀️ But are we selling these things, really??? Lol
I save SOME boxes because we move often and it's nice having the perfect size box for an item (especially if we kept the Styrofoam or cardboard cushioning). But it also makes unpacking the kitchen (AKA my least favorite part of moving) far less of a guessing game! If we didn't have the storage for them, I would just deal like I did in the past. But it's nice to have that convenience ;)
I have a favorite burner and spatula also, lol. One thing I was really surprised at was the bin of loose batteries. That is a big fire hazard...it was on the news maybe 2-3 years ago (could be longer). It's best to keep batteries in their original package or separate from other ones. My hubby keeps every box also and we have a small house. He's had the laptop box for several years and I've been hinting to get rid of it. What's the point of keeping all those boxes. And papers, we need a trip to our fav shredding company cause we can actually watch the guys shred our papers while there. Good tips/ideas!
I laughed when you were talking about boxes, because as much as I try I am still lax breaking them down. Currently I have 4 boxes in the house occupying floor space and about 10 in the garage! Yikes!
My husband kept all his equipment boxes too! 😂 I do always have a medium sized box on hand to hold to be donated items. I spent 2020-2021 doing the major decluttering but now I do a monthly sweep of my whole house (knickknacks, drawers, cabinets, closets) looking for additional items to get rid of. I even put that task on my calendar the first week of each month to make sure I don’t forget to do it.
Paper and cardboard + veggie scraps and you have amazing compost! I fight with my husband over him taking away all the boxes when we always need more brown/carbon in our compost bin. It's also the best weed matting.

Boxes! Yes, me n my husband r both box hordes. We kept boxes that r 5 years old 😅 until we changed home. But surprisingly our mover & packer utilized some of the original boxes of the big appliances when packing 😆

Ha Ha ha I'm a spatula addict - not sure why, but I think it's that I'm looking for that perfect size/durability .. I can actually break them if they are too thin or flimsy. I sort of inherited my Moms favorite & sadly it became so old & brittle it broke. I like the solid without holes because stuff gets stuck in them, which makes them a pain to wash. They have to be fairly wide to pick up say a large pancake or homemade tortilla. Strong enough to lift a quarter-pound burger - steak etc.. lol Nice thick handle for putting squishing pressure onto said Burger !!
Aspirational items, yes! "I'm going to make my apartment balcony an Insta-worthy oasis!" so I have a string lights - still unopened in their shipping box. New rule: if I can't use it the instant I bring it in the house, or other things/steps need to happen before it's usable, it has to go on the wish list or shopping list to think it over. Saves clutter but also a lot of money too!
Ha! Me too 😁 I have a string of solar lights for the garden that I bought BEFORE THE PANDEMIC still sitting in their box. I need to figure out where to hang those suckers!!
Regarding the homeless clutter, I've made a rule for myself since I've started decluttering my home, that whenever I think of buying something new, apart from thinking about if I really need it, I ask myself where it would go. I only buy the item when I know where its home is going to be

Hi! I'm a Computer Engineer major (graduating this fall), and took a lot of electrical engineering courses as well.
I've been watching your videos because my living areas have become an absolute MESS from focusing so much on school and work (finals and whatnot, you get it!).
To add on to your frustration about so many different cords: I absolutely get it! But the answer that you might not like: we need different cords due to the amount of power delivery & electricity going to each device. Your phone needs a lot less power than your laptop, which needs a lot less than your TV. The cords & wires are adjusted so it delivers just the right amount of power without wasting any and for safety reasons, such as avoiding big bursts of electricity that might ruin things (your device, your wall socket, anything that's connected by electricity in your home).
There are lots of wire routing/organization suggestions out there for computer & desk setups, especially in the computer enthusiast community! It will take time, research, and looking at your own space to figure out the best wiring setup for your home and tech areas, but it can be done! :)

So AC to DC adapters and such use different size plugs and thickness of wires to be matched to what is needed for optimal power delivery? I see that with newer USB type C some of that is passed off to the wall brick and can then be used for both your cell phone and laptop and each device controls how much power to receive. It seems like USB is being used more for more variety of devices also.

However I don't believe there will be a one-size-fits-all as far as charging and power, especially when companies need to provide solutions for differing international power standards. Some companies also want to stick with proprietary parts. We can only hope a singular standard might be realized one day!

About random electric cords, I use my label maker to make a label that says what the cord goes with. Then I wrap it around the cord like a tag. Works great on detachable cords. That way there are no "homeless" cords laying around & I don't wind up having no idea what a cord bongs with.
I label mine too, with masking tape and a sharpie. Then they all get stored in a designated drawer when not in use.
Yes! We recently did this! But just used some mini color sticky notes, I have neat writing. Figured out the cords & chargers, labeled & got rid of ones that seemed old, bent, frayed or didn't seem to charge. Labels are life!
Our families have a rule, no objects as gifts. Donations, experiences, gift cards, food, consumables only. Did this 2 decades ago, everyone loves the policy. We also got rid of expectations of gifts on certain days of the year if you are over the age of 16

I had to come to terms with "Fantasy Dee". She does ALL THE CRAFTS. "Real Dee" sews. I had to (painstakingly) part with the non-sewing craft items: paints, glue gun, cricut etc..💁🏼♀️

OMG! Yeti type mugs! I have a whole kitchen cabinet full that my husband won't get rid of. I finally told him every new one he has to get rid of one. So what did he do, he packed some in a storage bin and put out in the shed. He said for camping. We have NEVER gone camping in the 30yrs we have been married!

I do want to say, I have a good reason for multiple spatulas and other utensils. :) My husband and I don’t fill up an entire load of dishes in the washer in just one day, so if I use the spatula to flip my eggs one morning, chances are that the next morning, that spatula is still dirty. I use two of everything basically, plus multiple serving spoons for parties. :)

This video is awesome! Only thing I do not wish to change is my super random mugs and glasses collection. They tell a story of all years of my life. The random vintage teacups at a market when I was 13, things my parents or other people gave me when moving out, the first (mighty ugly) flowery mugs I bought for myself at 19, heirlooms from my love's grandma, the ugly mug at the thrift shop that just looked at me with puppy eyes like "no one wants me", the kitsch yet also nice christmas gift, the glasses of festival with my love 15 years ago... It would look so neat to replace them with complete sets, but I like it as it is and our guests are used to it too and find it cute ^^
Otherwise I am working on a giant declutter and many of the items that need to go fall into boxes mentioned in this video, which is not confronting at all XD
When you got to the 'homeless items' and said they could be seen left on a dining table I felt sooooo relieved I am not alone. I was beating myself up in frustration and feeling guilty all the time because of this. And since I am finally writing the comment below your video - thank you so much for all your good advice and kind helpful words for people like me drowning in their own clutter. As someone who teaches cleaning, organizing, and sorting - your videos are kinda awesome. I've been running my students through 'one area a day' for over a decade. (Though, I do not advocate minimalism, but that's another ramble.)
You mentioned boxes. I keep and collect cardboard boxes, but I run through them FAST. A cardboard box wrapped in duct tape can last me years, where most plastic containers I buy places die in weeks or months. Most of the time, if I have something in a container, it's because I access it a lot, and I want it organized.
I also give cardboard boxes to my students to use. I can almost always find a cardboard box of the right size and shape for storage in my garage, but it might take me three stores and hours of shopping to find the right plastic bin. My students are often very disorganized and don't have the money for new storage - but the boxes I give them and they get to decorate and label work really well for them, too.
I often forget most folk view cardboard boxes as an enemy, not a tool. (Though, I am very picky about the boxes I keep, and often do not keep a lot of boxes products come in, because they are finicky and annoying. I know some folk who move often will keep TV and other boxes for moving, but even that is a lot of clutter unless you move once a year or more. In my opinion, at least.)
I also keep lots of charging cables, mostly to pass out to students who lose and forget theirs. I always seem to have a plethora of extra cables that I roll up and twist tie (something else I never seem to run out of?) and then make sure to have 2-3 of the most common kinds of charging cables with me. Most of my students have mental illness, developmental, physical, or other disabilities, so those are a constant in/out cycle for me.
Your advice is great. It's making me review a bunch of my own stuff and make sure I'm keeping to my own systems and principles (though, I don't think I'll ever be an early riser.)
Yes, ALL the cords & stacks of papers! Love your idea of discarding all of the packages of items like snacks, diapers, etc. and putting them away, instead of them sitting in our open spaces, on counters etc.

What if the first thermometer head breaks? Boom 2nd one at the ready. Kid decides to cut the Alexa cord? Boom there's one that works in the old cord box. Big food processor breaks? Boom there's the attachment for the immersion blender. I have had so many things like this that I am so glad I have a backup or workaround!
Great video! I would love a segment deeper into aspirational clutter. I think it can be a blend of knowing you don't have to give it up, just not now/right season. And you mentioned that on this one and it can be reassuring and accurate. But I also think digging into more of why we keep it when it's not just the wrong season, it's 99% not EVER going to happen. Whether that's mourning the season has past (my tennis raquet just went away for good after not being used 15 years), accepting it, or whatver, I'd love more tips for moving through that. (And maybe more on the most common aspirational clutter: entertaining? fitness? crafts? )
I suggest you do a time will tell box, if you find yourself needing the item then you can take it back out but put a date on it and if you don’t use it by that date then you can rid yourself of the guilt to get rid of the item, see The minimal mom for more info on it
You really hit the nail on the head about mourning. I think some clutter (not all, for sure, but some) has a LOT of emotion attached to it. For instance, at one point in my life (like 20 years ago!), I was really into making homemade cards and LOVED it. And I made time for it. I haven't made time or had time for that now in 20 years. But because I did love it and also because I learned about stamping and cards, etc, from my beloved auntie - I hold onto all the supplies. And I have a LOT, like a whole closet full. The stamping and card-making is so emotionally tied to my aunt, who passed away about 10 years ago now, and I don't want to let go of all these things. That's just one small example.
I think therapy can truly help people to let go of physical items that are actually obstacles to the life we want now. I plan to seek a little therapy to make it easier to let go of a lot of stuff I still have from when my now-adult son was a child, too. I loved that time in my life, but it's past time to move on. Not forget, but just move on in regards to too much stuff!
I love your videos. Your tip about spatulas was a total surprise for me. I polled some of my family and friends, and they had multiple spatulas, too. The upshot of these conversations was that one friend told me how handy her fish spatula was. So now, instead of ridding myself of my several spatulas, I’m adding a fish spatula to the mix. I’ll make up for it by getting rid of a couple of my really good boxes. 😀🐟

For almost empty shampoo or conditioner bottles, I keep a travel size bottle in the shower and decant the leftover into that. Better yet, switch to bars.
I’m guilty! Of a lot of things. Like spatulas! I keep 3. It’s inevitable that 2 will be in the dishwasher when I need one. Well there-an excuse for keeping more than one. When I was in my 30’s I probably had only one and no d.w., so when I needed one, I had to wash that one before I could use it again. Many times I wished for more than one of anything.
My husband has paperwork around his chair in the living room and save bigger boxes. I do have 2 spatula’s,1 for greasy foods, 1 for cooking eggs which doesn’t make sense, but I do use them. I also have too many wooden spoons. I am making changes in my other habits. Thanks to you. 👍

I started labeling the shelves in the bathroom cabinet so that my family might 🤞 put the towels away on the correct shelves - or at least stop pulling out random towels hoping for one the right size!
Usually boxes were kept for at least a month, in case the item had to be returned for any reason. But agree boxes and paper are taking over our lives. I'm flattening boxes now & have a rack on the door to file paperwork. Am also removing food packaging straight away. Your explanation of the psychology of clutter is so valuable. LOL!!! I keep “really good boxes.” In my defense, I do have a place to store them, and I DO reuse them…I promise. I am a school teacher, and we are required to tear down our classrooms every year…it’s part of our check out list. Anyway. I rebuild the boxes to use for them for summer storage.

ie, Dealing with so many papers that you need for class, the papers that need to get graded, the fact that we can't just clean everything every day -- because grades are due or that it's exam week , the handouts that students need to write on (not everything can be digital).

Or that during lockdown, I had to bring home every lab worksheet, all the reference books, and other materials needed for Zoom meeting that had been stored in at least 3 different rooms on campus.

I'm looking for advice with my household tasks that I can't manage because of all the time that is required when you are an instructor. Our profession means that you ALWAYS bring school work home --- I could easily have work to do 24/7. So.... I get behind with my household tasks.
Most of the videos that are out there are from Mom's not instructors ---
Pocketful of Primary is about what she does in her classroom -- I didn't see any advice about how she keeps up with household duties even with her gym schedule and grad school on top of her classroom duties.

Our grandparents never threw anything away but we also don’t have the same quality of items anymore. Things are made to be replaced nowadays where in the past things were built to last and be repaired. Now we throw out and get new ones
So thankful for motivational videos like this. I donated stuff over a couple of years & some charity shops register you for tax purposes & then send you details of how much they have raised by selling your stuff. Currently £300! I find that spurs me on to donate even more.

I am so guilty of extra items in my home! I recently went through my dishes and all but 1 kid has moved out of my home so the house of 7 went to a home of 3! Boom cleaned it out. In the garage it goes! Keeping there because holidays they come home and I am not going to go out and buy more to once again having the extra clutter. You give some really good advice. I open all shipping packages & boxes in the garage beside our recycling bin. I Remove address & other labels, keep a box cutter hanging above the bin, break them down & out they go! For plastic bags, if it’s a blue/white Amazon bubble bag, I do save those for returns as UPS can re-use them to ship. Other thin plastic bags get turned inside out & used to line waste baskets-at least they aren’t a total loss.
About keeping boxes- sometimes you need it for the warranty, especially with gaming systems. I worked at gamestop and ALWAYS recommended that people keep the boxes for gaming systems and expensive accessories like headsets. Nintendo is a big one for requiring boxes.
Guilty! We got a new sofa a couple of months ago. The other one is still kept as a second one.... In case of .... hmmm... It's in the middle of everything just taking up space. It's not even comfy. LOL

I was skeptical of decanting for a long time it's annoying to have to wash the containers so often but it defiantly 100% promotes USING the thing u put it in it so it makes sense to do it if you want to use all of what you buy

I seriously just bought another one of my favorite spatulas! Haha! But I do have more than one favorite. It depends on what I'm cooking, and like someone else mentioned, not wanting to wash one that's still waiting for the DW to be run, which doesn't happen every day here. But my kitchen/house are not cluttered. I've been doing what you're teaching for 30+ years and agree with and live pretty much everything you say.
I know this isn't the video for this but I had a really hard time decluttering my clothes yesterday until I had a breakthrough thought, so maybe this can help someone reading who is decluttering clothes
I had a lot of things that I absolutely loved but couldn't wear Because they needed something else to go with it that I would have to buy so i made the decision that "if I need to purchase something else just so I can wear this then it can go"
Made decluttering my closet so much easier because I also realised that by getting rid of that item, I would also be saving money
Eg, I had this beautiful flowy mute pink top and I had nothing to wear with it, I knew I'd have to look for & buy a matching skirt or leggings; there was absolutely nothing in my closet that I could pair with it so I just gave it away 💘
But also, keep a few of the beautiful things when you absolutely love them. Many times jeans work with everything, or maybe create a new unique style with what you have already. And your friends might have something they don't like anymore that would look nice with something you have. I'm actually sorry about some of the things I decluttered a few years ago :(

Omg my husband saves all the boxes for his electronic purchases too! He says he keeps them because the item has a warranty so he keeps the box and tapes the receipt to it. I tell him as long as he can store it out of the way then fine. And we have actually needed a few of them lol
My brother is the same way. He says it's important to save the boxes with the receipt for at least the first year or whenever the warranty expiration date is. I know the box for my microwave is over two years old now. But I'm pretty sure the box has been filled.
I think the biggest problem with letting go of items is where do they go. It's hard to just throw away perfectly good stuff. Knowing where something will go would be very helpful.
My brother recycles so the boxes have a destination. But what would you do with the extra two pitchers?
We get into the mindset that we worked hard in order to buy things. Yet my sister is constantly telling me to get rid of things. While she can easily discard items, I have more trouble letting go. And unless I know where items that I worked so hard for are going because I can't just throw them away.

If I didn't keep the box, I would be stuck with a faulty item I cannot return. Somehow, I do not like to waste a lot of money just for the sake of decluttering.

Yes! About the wires! I want to do that trick you talked about in another video about labeling the chords because part of it is not even being sure what they go to, so you don't want to risk throwing out something important. But my husband is such a culprit with electronics, wires, "nice boxes" 🤣🤣

I used to keep all the cute address labels, off my name & address and give the cute pics to my grandkids to make cards and such.

Great ideas.... in regards to the little bit left in the bottles, I will mix with just a tiny bit of water and I put them all in one squirt bottle and use it to clean the toilet or counters in the bathroom. Seems to work for me!

My husband literally has a stack of empty shoe boxes in his office as I type this. He also has phone boxes from 5-10 years ago. My prob is the dishes we never use, and gadgets we never use. That’s the problem with tons of cabinet space in the kitchen; it’s an excuse to hoard. 🥴🤷🏻♀️

My son is one to keep all boxes, actually, I'm I'm o ly one who throws away abox I get. Lol I go thru and break the boxes down to get rid of them. Although I have found that after I've tossed them, I end up actually needing one! Not all the time but it's happened.

Wow! Great tips!! The boxes in our house are always an issue. I love the idea of putting the items in containers and recycling the box.
Why buy a plastic container that is less recyclable than fiber? Plus box is free & you already have it.
@@hschultz3975 I said I liked the idea, not that I was going to buy containers. I have a few that I've had for years that I use in the kitchen like she describes. I also have a couple fabric covered boxes that I keep the food processor parts and other items in.
I'm fully aware of fiber vs. plastic, which is why there are always extra boxes in the house.

I agree with so much of what you advocate in your videos, specifically about decluttering. Do you have any suggestions on dealing with other household members (not kids) that are unwilling to declutter? We agree on the important stuff (religion, politics, etc) but living with too much stuff is becoming a topic of constant disagreement.
Start with your items (stuff you bought/own). As you make progress others in your home may be willing to try decluttering as they see you reaction to the process. Other option is use the container method, give their stuff boundaries, it must stay in this cabinet, closet, their room, etc. Tell them they can keep whatever they want but it must stay within that container/ space.

I love all my spatulas lol, doing better on the boxes,and very interested in the aspirational things. I do keep a second on hand of my beauty products and a few other items because I hate getting out of the shower and forgetting to put shampoo on the lost, then running out. I do have a home for these seconds though and I think that makes the difference.
I've been following you for a while now...love it, of course. Everytime, I watch, I let things go :D You mentioned papers.. did you ever thought about digital clutter? I have a lot of this and I am missing ideas about digital clutter, it's so overwhelming and I until now I am not capable of organizing it.. and now: I wish for a video for digital clutter :D
My husband keeps boxes, too!!!! He says things like electronics will bring more money if you go to sell them when you have the box it came in. 🤷🏼♀️ But are we selling these things, really??? Lol
I save SOME boxes because we move often and it's nice having the perfect size box for an item (especially if we kept the Styrofoam or cardboard cushioning). But it also makes unpacking the kitchen (AKA my least favorite part of moving) far less of a guessing game! If we didn't have the storage for them, I would just deal like I did in the past. But it's nice to have that convenience ;)
I have a favorite burner and spatula also, lol. One thing I was really surprised at was the bin of loose batteries. That is a big fire hazard...it was on the news maybe 2-3 years ago (could be longer). It's best to keep batteries in their original package or separate from other ones. My hubby keeps every box also and we have a small house. He's had the laptop box for several years and I've been hinting to get rid of it. What's the point of keeping all those boxes. And papers, we need a trip to our fav shredding company cause we can actually watch the guys shred our papers while there. Good tips/ideas!
True, plus the original pkg has their expiration dates.
I laughed when you were talking about boxes, because as much as I try I am still lax breaking them down. Currently I have 4 boxes in the house occupying floor space and about 10 in the garage! Yikes!
My husband kept all his equipment boxes too! 😂 I do always have a medium sized box on hand to hold to be donated items. I spent 2020-2021 doing the major decluttering but now I do a monthly sweep of my whole house (knickknacks, drawers, cabinets, closets) looking for additional items to get rid of. I even put that task on my calendar the first week of each month to make sure I don’t forget to do it.

Some great tips here. I am curious why you keep your metronome in your cupboard instead of with your piano (maybe it's an aspirational item)?
Paper and cardboard + veggie scraps and you have amazing compost! I fight with my husband over him taking away all the boxes when we always need more brown/carbon in our compost bin. It's also the best weed matting.
We have volunteer plants in our compost bin... Lol! No brown matting and many household scraps make for an interesting harvest!
This is an awesome video. I am curry I. A season of decluttering even after a move. I have been getting rid of all the extras we don’t need around the home.
💯 yes to your points about boxes!! Haha we totally tell ourselves “this looks like a good box I may need it I’ll keep it!” This made me laugh!! I do this absolutely but find I do end up using them when Christmas rolls around so I don’t know if it’s actually worth it or not!? 😂

Boxes! Yes, me n my husband r both box hordes. We kept boxes that r 5 years old 😅 until we changed home. But surprisingly our mover & packer utilized some of the original boxes of the big appliances when packing 😆

As your talking about the spatula lol I look over to my counter and realized I could get rid of all those triple of everything (spatulas, spoons) lol
Ha Ha ha I'm a spatula addict - not sure why, but I think it's that I'm looking for that perfect size/durability .. I can actually break them if they are too thin or flimsy. I sort of inherited my Moms favorite & sadly it became so old & brittle it broke. I like the solid without holes because stuff gets stuck in them, which makes them a pain to wash. They have to be fairly wide to pick up say a large pancake or homemade tortilla. Strong enough to lift a quarter-pound burger - steak etc.. lol Nice thick handle for putting squishing pressure onto said Burger !!

Aspirational items, yes! "I'm going to make my apartment balcony an Insta-worthy oasis!" so I have a string lights - still unopened in their shipping box. New rule: if I can't use it the instant I bring it in the house, or other things/steps need to happen before it's usable, it has to go on the wish list or shopping list to think it over. Saves clutter but also a lot of money too!
Ha! Me too 😁 I have a string of solar lights for the garden that I bought BEFORE THE PANDEMIC still sitting in their box. I need to figure out where to hang those suckers!!
All items you mentioned is my pet peeve also. Finding all those wires never labeled are one of my top peeve.
