Beehive MTB trail is as nasty as it sounds! Pisgah | Thrills with Phil

- Today we're mountain biking on the Beehive trail in Pisgah. It's a very short trail but it is very gnarly and ungroomed mountain bike trail. Not for novice riders.
If you're wondering what I'm talking about with the leaves ruining the quality of the video, watch Tom Scott's video on UA-cam Compression. It'll explain it. ua-cam.com/video/r6Rp-uo6HmI/v-deo.html
Skills With Phil that video was a great explanation. You can help a bit with the leaves and grass by using neutral density filters to lower your shutter speed to 1.5-2x the frame rate. That way you get nice, cinematic motion blur instead of foreground strobing. :)
Skills With Phil highland this weekend?
Wish! Won't make it :( In NC until next week.
What kind of microphone cover are you using for your Gopro?
You should also check out and ride Wissahickon Park Trails in Philly! They are Super Fun!
"Going to go slower since I'm alone" then bombs the shit out of super sketchy downhill!
Holy cow!!! That trail is so overgrown and you're absolutely cruising! At 12:13 it looks like you're just free riding off trails. Nice riding my dude!
That adds a whole'nother element to the ride. Keeps you on your toes!
So fast its great!
ALL OUT WAR FOR THE WIN!!!!! Hey man I wanted to say I love your commentaries, you have a great way with the talking, its actually my favorite component of your videos, your awesome!!!
Crazy trail, I would have gone off course several times there riding blind.
"self-preservation kicks in"
Proceeds to try and jump on a downed tree to snap it.
It was 3 ft off the ground. If I fell, I'd be fine :P
I love riding in the forest. I think it's such a great natural environment, with all those surprises that come with it, and it's so beautiful at the same time.
This combined with your unbelievable riding on this descent makes this probably my fave mtb video ever.
Love your work and how you present it. Keep it up man.
I'm a simple man. I see you upload (notification squad), I click, I watch, I enjoy :)
Phil your thumbnail game is on POINT
Thank you GeddyMX!!
Fast, gnarly and raw. This kind of videos are great man! Instantly added to favorites.
Hey Man, dig the video this one is probably one of the greatest mtb'ing vid's I've ever seen your slamming into what appears to be uncharted territory and you do like you've done it before but with incredible confidence, no fear factor, your a calm maniac
Phil, your so down to earth. Keep being awesome👍🚴🌄
That trail starts off looking pretty mellow and flowy, but it gets pretty crazy, pretty fast! Great edit Phil, thanks!
The fields are wild food plots for deer and other game, in turn is used for hunting. Great video! Keep them coming.
Greentown is the trail that comes from the right at the top of Beehive. Used to link Raspberry, Greentown, Beehive quite frequently. Enjoy the commentary and vibe from all your stuff. Well done!
It really shows that you were a pro downhiller because you makes those fast, narrow, hazard filled downhills easy
Such a rocky trail! It must be painful for the suspension! But you cruise through like it's nothing. Thumbs up! :)
Love the videos man. Definitely true about not being reckless while riding alone lol I fractured my arm last week riding by myself so I won't be riding for a little while. Watching these videos has me excited to get back on the trails though!
Man the end of that trail looks like more like a river bed than intended trail. Awesome stuff!
Superb reflexes and bike skills.....I am totally entertained with this...thank you Sir.
When you said, "That's just a warm up!" I was like, "YASSS!!!"
Phil, watching you ride boggles up my mind. Every other turn I'm seeing a crash or a washout but you just keep on going. I dare to say you ride those trails better than most people ride tarmac. Mad respect for your skills. It's really not something you see all over youtube.
Thanks for taking us along on that one, that was a lot of fun to watch!
Phil, love how you say you're not going all out because you're alone; sure seems like you were flying down that trail!:-) Looks like a total blast though!
I can tell you like your Element, you keep showing shots of it at the end of your rides! I just got one, their so nice for mountain biking.
Great vid Phil, my kind of trail....well, bit rocky for my hardtail! Keep up the good work.
Great move @1:54 taking branches out the way, Phil !
It's interesting that we use our hearing as much as we do on the trails. That ping, you knew instantly what it was and what caused it. Good video and my god that was fast.
This is insane! I have my first mountain bike ever in the mail coming and because of this video im subing.
Woah!! I wish you the best, happy trails!
Man that trail is wild and you ride it like a boss! Very interesting video! Watch out for sasquatch while you´re up there. ;)
Damn. My nerves are rockin when I watched this video. You're the best phil
Dude that trail was stretching. Great run. Be blessed
loved the rock garden to the end very nice
I love Skills With Phil it fits in so nicely ''Skills with Phil'', It's so cool!
If that ride was done in self preservation mode, I would hate to see it in any other mode. That was an awesome ride. You got a new subscriber from that one!!
WOW BRO, Sketchy, FAST and Bro you have some awesome reaction time!!
Live-Life-Loud!!!
Lol! You taking it easy is still ridiculous speed and control.... I'd be a part of one of those fallen trees! Gagha good video
Sick ride Phil. Thanks for uploading.
Great video as always mate, looked crazy that one.
I rode this trail last weekend, It it sooooo much gnarlier now after years of weathering, you definitely should come check it out again
Another great video! Funny, Rides half speed alone and still rips down the trail faster than most.
a bit of Bob with the bike climbing or am I imagining things? and mad skills you have I didn't even see those trees !!!
Hi Phil. Great video, as always. I love your smooth full speed through MTB trails videos. Just a note that I also had problems with grainy videos when I was taking a video with a GoPro while climbing mountains. I found out that when rendering the final video increasing the bitrate to a ridiculous number, like four times the original bitrate that comes from GoPro tricked UA-cam into thinking that the video is from a super duper camera and then UA-cam did not make these detailed scenes grainy again.
Already do that!
In regards to the small fields on the hills...they have many purposes. Fire control, helicopter landing, base camp if there is a fire. The reason for the road to them all. Feeding wild life, lost and found points. Forestry platforms for the equipment and staging lumber for future use.
Love Beehive! Used to ride it almost every weekend, we would park up at Gingercake acres pull off and bomb down from up there, there used to be some wooden drops as alternate lines back in early 2000s
damn Phil! killing it! That was an awesome ride.
Sweet trail clean up, super smooth!
Gotta do my part :) Pay it forward.
Bushwacking and log jumping. awesome looking trail.
thanks for the trail maintenance at 2:00. Every little bit helps.
Haha.....You had me dodging behind my computer screen.....Good Riding!!!
sometimes open spaces in forests like the ones you showed are maintained open by park services to help prevent forest fires from spreading easily. I don't know of that's the exact reason for the field you showed, but in California and northern Arizona those are common.
Bad ass riding! Great vid brutha 👍🏻
I thought your were going to Bunnyhop that tree!! Shucks!! Lol.. maybe build a lil ramp to clear!!
One of the bettet footages by far! Felt like a speeder ride from star wars!
Awesome Phil 👍.
Beehive looked so different back in the day. It was very wide open. Wilson Creek's trails change so much though, even from year to year.
Yeah, it's crazy how quickly things get eroded and overgrown around here.
Dude that was straight up GNARLY!
I think those cleared areas may be from logging, often national forests permit areas of trees to be harvested. Smart not going too fast while alone, I'm careful myself especially in remote areas when riding alone.
I rly enjoy how u answer questions when ur riding and not doing like a sit down q and a like gmbn does
But I really like gmbn nonetheless
But I really like gmbn nonetheless
Great idea using the audio from the Hero 4! I have been editing out the wind in adobe premiere pro for my Hero 5 however, its a pain in the butt and still leaves the rest of the audio sounding funny. I will certainly use this hack!
Keep up the great work
nice Phil you're getting better with your edits
North Carolina looks better and better as a place to move. I always knew they had some good riding but these past few videos you have put up are insane !
Western NC has a great bike culture and amazing mountains. Eastern NC is flat and not as interesting. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite areas.
Phil My Man keep up the good work ❤️
The trail's been cleaned up since this. The lines are fire now! Love this trail :)
You're crazy man. love it
Wish we would have run into you there this weekend. We did lower black and bennetts. Would have loved to buy you a beer for the techniques learned from you that were put to good use there.
that was sketchy and exciting, great ride and video
That looked like a very fun track. I need to at least get a chest mount that cockpit view really beats my bar mount 10 to 1.
Kick ass! Gnarly trails indeed.
You mentioned the cleared hill tops it might be for emergency for flight for life maybe not for sure but if it’s pretty clear , big area .
Nice video. Cool insight on the sponsor thing. Well... be cooler of you did get paid too. Ripping that trail for half speed. 🤘
Sounds good to me! I was expecting you to pull out a fancy mic. I definitely think it's at least good enough. I watch on my TV with a decent sound bar too.
Notification Squad
Holy crap that trail is intense. If that's even considered a trail
the fields are food plots for wildlife. good winter food source.
Awesome stuff
Some of those clearings are called "balds" as well.
Max Patch in Pisgah is an example of an area cleared for pasture land.
www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/harmon-den-max-patch/
Other openings are now maintained to keep them clear. Andrews Bald in GSMNP is one example of a maintained area.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrews_Bald
wow, super smart recording hack!
Rode this trail when i had a kona precept DL. Nothing else like it, Such a steep trail so gnarlyl
Really fucking cool man I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Phil, obviously you have Tons of skill! How fast are you going in this video? It looks pretty fast to me. A number of years ago I had a bad crash at 41 mph on a road bike. Just getting over my 2nd shoulder surgery from that crash. Not looking to do what you do but starting the move from road to MTB. I do enjoy seeing what you guys can do!
impressive, extremal riding, you have good reaction
Holy crap! Sweet trail!
Phil, those grassy mountaintops zones are called balds. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_balds
You need a limbo tune for some of the downed trees !!!
I like hitting Raspberry, Greentown, Beehive. Makes it worth it. Might wanna shuttle though!
I would have eaten it so hard in more places than I can count on two hands going that fast. Cheers for the motivation.
The clearings are wildlife clearings, purposefully cleared to attract wildlife for hunters during hunting season. There all over Georgia mens as well.
Really?! that's very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
NIce video...I am training to do the Pisgah 111K on May 20th .... It is going to be a long day. BTW you mentioned pinch flatting. Do you not run your tires tubeless?
Nice, you're in my neck of the woods!
That was full on dude. The pisgah trails look a lot like Vermont, except we have mostly singletrack climbs instead of roads. You should come check it out sometime!
I'm from New Hampshire, and my girlfriend lives in the Burlington area. :)
No way! That's awesome. Where do you like to ride when you're up here?
Kingdom trials for days man!
She just moved to VT from NH, so I haven't explored VT trails. I've raced at Sugarbush, Mt Snow, Killington etc but haven't done much trail riding in VT. Perry Hill is #1 on my list of places I want to ride. When I'm in NH have 3 trail networks all within riding distance from my house so I tend to just ride my home trails (Primarily Drummer Hill)
Perry hill is fantastic. As is the stuff in Stowe (Cady hill and Adams camp). My favorite VT trails are hinesburg town Forrest, carse hills and sleepy hollow. Miles and miles of super techy singletrack with some crazy features. Let me know if you ever need trail beta!
best guess on those big open fields is you have found someone's old food plot for hunting.
That was pretty fast still! There were moments when I though that you rode corners wide, but it was just hard to see the trail.
I dont know ig other people would agree but, some parts of your videos ( dont know if its the scenary) look a bit dark, and without a lot of color. If you could increase the brightness or saturation of those parts it would be great. Great video tho! Love great videos on fridays!! Haha
Very Cool...
Phil, Are you thinking of moving to the Karma Grip extension cable? saves having the lower strap? I use the same setup and strapping ideas as you do and looking to try the cable out and possibly rotate the lower strap to my side and put the remote handle in the loop... You could use the gph4 in the grip with the GPH4 cage thats now available.
All videos I've seen using the Hero 4 + grip show that it picks up the motor noises from the gimbals worse than the Hero 5, which is why I don't do that.
As far as the cable goes, $100 for a cable is silly expensive. On top of that I would still need to have access to the controls. It's not like I can just put it in my bag and go ride. I'll be sticking with my current set up.
Even with the stabilized footage the trail looks gnarly!
And the surprise is beeeesssss
when are you doing a game of BIKE with GMBN? (skills videos are great even if i'm not)
Well they live in the UK while he lives in the States so...
although they do travel to the states for tech shows etc so they might have something in the pipeline
gmbn are a bunch of wankers, idiots, why would phill affiliate with them?
