  • Today we're mountain biking on the Beehive trail in Pisgah. It's a very short trail but it is very gnarly and ungroomed mountain bike trail. Not for novice riders.

    If you're wondering what I'm talking about with the leaves ruining the quality of the video, watch Tom Scott's video on UA-cam Compression. It'll explain it. ua-cam.com/video/r6Rp-uo6HmI/v-deo.html

      Skills With Phil that video was a great explanation. You can help a bit with the leaves and grass by using neutral density filters to lower your shutter speed to 1.5-2x the frame rate. That way you get nice, cinematic motion blur instead of foreground strobing. :)

    I love riding in the forest. I think it's such a great natural environment, with all those surprises that come with it, and it's so beautiful at the same time.
    This combined with your unbelievable riding on this descent makes this probably my fave mtb video ever.
    Love your work and how you present it. Keep it up man.

    Hi Phil. Great video, as always. I love your smooth full speed through MTB trails videos. Just a note that I also had problems with grainy videos when I was taking a video with a GoPro while climbing mountains. I found out that when rendering the final video increasing the bitrate to a ridiculous number, like four times the original bitrate that comes from GoPro tricked UA-cam into thinking that the video is from a super duper camera and then UA-cam did not make these detailed scenes grainy again.

    In regards to the small fields on the hills...they have many purposes. Fire control, helicopter landing, base camp if there is a fire. The reason for the road to them all. Feeding wild life, lost and found points. Forestry platforms for the equipment and staging lumber for future use.

    sometimes open spaces in forests like the ones you showed are maintained open by park services to help prevent forest fires from spreading easily. I don't know of that's the exact reason for the field you showed, but in California and northern Arizona those are common.

      She just moved to VT from NH, so I haven't explored VT trails. I've raced at Sugarbush, Mt Snow, Killington etc but haven't done much trail riding in VT. Perry Hill is #1 on my list of places I want to ride. When I'm in NH have 3 trail networks all within riding distance from my house so I tend to just ride my home trails (Primarily Drummer Hill)

    • @saywhaatnow

      Perry hill is fantastic. As is the stuff in Stowe (Cady hill and Adams camp). My favorite VT trails are hinesburg town Forrest, carse hills and sleepy hollow. Miles and miles of super techy singletrack with some crazy features. Let me know if you ever need trail beta!

    Phil, Are you thinking of moving to the Karma Grip extension cable? saves having the lower strap? I use the same setup and strapping ideas as you do and looking to try the cable out and possibly rotate the lower strap to my side and put the remote handle in the loop... You could use the gph4 in the grip with the GPH4 cage thats now available.

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  7 років тому

      All videos I've seen using the Hero 4 + grip show that it picks up the motor noises from the gimbals worse than the Hero 5, which is why I don't do that.
      As far as the cable goes, $100 for a cable is silly expensive. On top of that I would still need to have access to the controls. It's not like I can just put it in my bag and go ride. I'll be sticking with my current set up.
