The 80s, I Lived It, I Loved It, I Miss It. I will be 68 this summer and the 80s are so clear in my memory. If I could only go back for just one night, the night I met "her", Margie. June 22, 1982, I was 25, she was 24. I was a year out of college living in Texas working as a computer programmer in Austin. I met her at a pizza restaurant called "The Mellow Mushroom." She had the most beautiful smile, and I was smitten the moment I saw her. I was with a few of my friends, and she was with a few of her friends. Something told me to just go over to her and talk to her. I did, and we ended up spending the most beautiful summer together. We went everywhere, even spending a week camping in a tent on the beach at Padre Island. We had a whirlwind romance, but as fate would have it, it didn't last. She got a job with Mutal Of America in New York City. We tried a long-distance relationship, but as everyone knows, they never last. Eight years later I went to a convention in New York City and got a crazy idea that I would see if I could contact her. I did, and she agreed to meet me in Central Park. It was a beautiful Fall afternoon when I finally laid eyes on her after such a long time. I remember my heart pounding, and the moment I saw her, there was that beautiful smile, just like I remembered from that night on June 22, 1982. I fell in love all over again. We hugged, laughed and for a moment I felt like we might have another chance together, but once again, it wasn't meant to be. She was married and had a daughter. This may sound a little selfish, but I was saddened to hear it. We walked and talked for about two hours, then she told me that she had to go. I remember watching her as she walked back to her car, then disappeared out of my life once again, but this time forever. I never married because I knew I would never be able to give my full love to another woman. One day in 2010, twenty years after I had last seen her, I got on the internet, and through Facebook I discovered that Margie had passed away the previous year. Cancer, it's such a terrible disease. It floored me, I hadn't cried in a long, long time, but that day I cried until there were no more tears. It's now been 15 years since she passed and here I sit on UA-cam watching old movie clips from the 80s reminiscing and thinking of her. Maybe I'm just an old fool who could never let go, and here I am with tears running down my face. June 22, 1982, I'll always love you, Margie.

1988 here - there was some bleedover of 80s culture in the 90s and especially kids shows and commercials were slower to adapt than mainstream culture. Edgy grunge culture may have been in full swing by the mid 90s but that Sunny D commercial was still total cheese, and the Pokemon theme was total Bon Jovi. The movies being played on TV were usually older ones from the 80s and early 90s with that beautiful film grain and lighting that went away sometime in the 90s.

    • @johnz6877

@@jlee2383 The 90s were a reaction to the 80s cheese for sure. That said, as a 90s/00s kid looking back, I find the edgelord culture of that era to be pretentious and far more "cringe" than anything from the 80s. There's enough misery in the world as is without wallowing in it intentionally for appearances. I'll take the unrealistic starry eyed escapism of the 80s with full awareness that it's just that - escapism to help you get by.

Thanks, THE MIDNIGHT for constantly transporting me to the best years of my life. I grew up in the 70s-80s and don't believe I've ever been as happy as I was then. Sadly, I wished to grow up faster, but had I known how much it actually sucks to be an adult I would have paid more attention to the wonderful time I was having riding my BMX bike, playing Pac-Man, reading comics, playing Wiffle Ball and Manhunt with my friends and the general safety and security I felt. If you're a kid or teenager reading this please, PLEASE make sure you appreciate every minute of every day, you will only be this old once, and someday the people you love and maybe take for granted will start disappearing. Make sure you make great memories and don't be in a rush to grow up.

3:10-3:21 Oh, the many evenings of extra long kissing in the 1980s. We practically didn't touch any other part of our bodies but our lips when we kissed, cuz we were so overwhelmed with the feeling of pressing our lips against the soft wet lips of the opposite sex. Absolutely exhilarating!
