Beat Detective - Avid Pro Tools - How to use Beat Detective to fix drums

Timing and tuning are the two most important elements in music. Well other than emotion and feel.
What we’ll cover today is how to put a bad drummer into perfect timing on the grid using Pro Tools Beat Detective.
This isn’t always the best thing to do musically. But, that could be a long discussion over a cold beer.
If I didn’t have Beat Detective. I could line up the drums with the grid manually by slicing each transient. Then line up the drum transient with the grid. Then crossfade. This would take a very long time transient by transient for an entire song..
Luckily, Pro Tools Beat Detective does this for you.
Move drum files to the start of your session
For these drums set the Bpm at 144.
Group drums by selecting tracks and shortcut command G
Create New Playlist - in case you need to go back to the original tracks
Name the new Playlist drums BD
Beat Detective is found under Event menu
Use Beat Detective to place drums perfectly on the grid
Highlight the section you want to BD.
1. Choose clip separation
2. Contains 1/8 note. Choose the smallest subdivision for the most accuracy. This will vary from song to song.
3. Highlight 1 bar of the drums and Capture selection. Sometimes you can do more than 1 bar.
4. Analyze - set sensitivity to find the transients of the drum hits
5. Separate
6. Clip conform
7. 1/8 note
8. Strength. 100%
9. Click Conform
10. Edit smoothing - fill and cross-fade
11. Move to the next measure - rinse and repeat
12. When finished check all your edits and crossfades for clicks, pops, flams and unwanted noises from the computer's inaccurate cross-fades.
You have to fix those manually.
Now all your drummers should play perfectly in time.
