They're not deer, that was an Impala. Impala are antelope. A key difference between the two is that deer have antlers that fall off and regrow every year. Antelope have horns and keep them year-round.
The lions know it's in their best interest, because most bodies of water in Africa are infested with crocodiles and/or hippos, both of which are deadly to lions. It's mutually beneficial. The lions get free water, that they don't have to risk their lives to drink, and the baboon troop basically gets free protection from the pride.
In a few generations the lions will live on a rock near the river named "pride rock" and the baboons will have priest like status to the lions in announcing the new king to the land.
@@bigevil1001 Not together. You're over exaggerating what happened, the lions just relate attack baboons --> no food. And that's all, the baboons just start seeing that the lions don't attack them so they are calm when lions are around. It's not that the baboons made a plan or something, it's just nature
@@bigevil1001 No dude, it's not a trap set up by the baboons. The baboons would be pretty stupid if they still flee from the lions when they don't attack them. Even a fish is smart enough for that. The process was like this: 1) The Lions slowly realize that when they attack the baboons, the other animals escape, and they end up with nothing 2) The Lions stop attacking the baboons and chasing other prays *1 or 2 generations of baboons pass.* 3) The baboons no longer see the lions as a threat, for they have never experienced issues with them 4) Since the baboons aren't afraid of the lions, they don't flee, making the other animals feel secure and falling for the lions
I will always admire that people take years to study how animal society works, then make documentaries out of their studies. Never would I have expected a pack of Lions and pack of baboons to be cordial, or in this case, form an alliance. This shit so cool to me
It's better defined as a "mutualistic relationship", aka both parties benefit. The fact is, a whole lot of savannah animals have a commensal relationship with baboons, meaning that the other parties benefit but the baboon sees little to no benefit with their alerting of predators. For unknown reasons, the baboons of this group decided that traditional commensal relationship wasn't benefitting them like this one does. I'd love to know how the baboons not only decided to enter this relationship with these lions, but also how they convinced the lions to enter it as well, but that would mean a whole lot more work for the zoologists who study this.
@@Wasserkaktus best guess is because one of them lost a sibling or child to the lions, and seeing that alerting other animals isn't going to save the troop, one day decided to betray the other animals and let the lions eat them, allowing for the troop to survive
@@EternalEmperorofZakuul "Betray other animals" Wrong, they aren't "betraying" anyone: This is a human cultural idea. The Baboons have always tried to ensure their own survival, and other animals just "piggybacked" on their very good alerting ability.

@@elhammo7478 Instinct : "a largely inheritable and unalterable tendency of an organism to make a complex and specific response to environmental stimuli without involving reason". Merriam-Webster dictionary "a natural ability that helps you decide what to do or how to act without thinking" Cambridge dictionary So no, the behaviour in this vid is not instinct. They altered their response to the evironment, when instinct is by definition unalterable. The definition clearly states it does not involve reason, and yet you're here talking about "rational survival instinct", it's literaly an oxymoron.
@@AnomiEj From the wiki article on survival instinct, aka self-preservation: "Self-preservation is essentially the process of an organism preventing itself from being harmed or killed and is considered a basic instinct in most organisms." But also: "Self-preservation is also thought by some to be the basis of rational and logical thought and behavior." Basic instincts do not exist in a vacuum. In a complex, intelligent animal, instincts are wired into a brain that also contains a frontal cortex and rational thought. So there's definitely interplay between the two. Also from the wiki article: "However, when introduced to a novel threat, many species will have a self-preservation response either too specialised, or not specialised enough, to cope with that particular threat." This is why enhanced intelligence makes the survival instinct more effective. Because it's an adaptation to increase the complexity and flexibility of your response to threats.
@@ka-boom2083 Not necessarily because they might in competition for something like how the baboons maybe don’t want the antelopes around because they are both taking from the same watering hole
A million years down the road when humans are long gone, baboon researchers will look back and try to figure out how exactly "a lion is a baboon's best friend" came about.
If humans are to actually die out, no large mammal will take it’s place for a long time. The world will either be dominated by insects like cockroaches, or there’ll just be fish once more
One hell of a barter system. That is why I never underestimate other animals. You'd be surprised how truly smart they are, as well as fast on adaptation. Remember... If they exist among us... They been here a long time too... Survival is paramount.
This happened somewhat like this: 1) The Lions slowly realize that when they attack the baboons, the other animals escape, and they end up with nothing 2) The Lions stop attacking the baboons and chasing other prays *1 or 2 generations of baboons pass.* 3) The baboons no longer see the lions as a threat, for they have never experienced issues with them 4) Since the baboons aren't afraid of the lions, they don't flee, making the other animals feel secure and falling for the lions Unfortunately for the baboons, this may not last long since the other animals won't relate baboons to lions in some years and start relying on other things.
That’s a pretty good explanation. I was wondering how the baboons and lions could have stumbled upon such mutually beneficial behaviour. That’s a nice piece of rationale you used. Kudos 👍
@@booffish4563 I mean, it's a watering hole, not exactly an abundant amount of water around, and the baboons are essentially the best alarm system in the area, what other options do you think they have? Lions are extremely stealthy, and both species have very high intelligence to exploit this stealth.
That partnership reminds me a bit of the African honeyguide birds that have learnt to direct people straight to wild beehives so that they can get to share in the meal after the humans have safely extracted the honeycombs 😁
Now do you know this? The bee-eater also has a sinister side of the situation. If you double cross the bee-eater and leave nothing (no honey) for the bird, it has a way of punishing you. Next time it may lead you to a dangerous situation, to a snake or a dangerous animal. Problem is, since it cannot recognise one human from another, the victim might be someone different altogether. So next time you follow a bee-eater, be very alert. If you or anyone does not trust me on this one, please ask any African honey collector who usually follows bee-eaters.
Big Chungus, Big Chungus Big Chungus, Big Chungus Big Chungus, Big Chungus Big Chungus, Big Chungus Chungus! (Big Chungus!) Chungus! (Big Chungus!) When the Big Chung is sus!
I would assume, as this water hole Baboons are the only ones without this instinct, and other baboons from other parts of africa would still act as an alarm system, I don't think animals would stop feeling like Baboons are reliable, unless said animals spend too much time at that water hole that is. But that's just a theory, an animal theory, thanks for watching.
It's probably something that is hard to remove from your habits. Those grazing animals probably have relied on that alarm for so long it's instinctual. Without the baboons they go back to square one and lose an advantage rather than being able to adapt to the baboon factor.
I remember the original documentary of this. There's a scene where lion babies and baboon babies are playing separately, and they get close from not paying attention, tumbling around. All the parents tensed and looked, but the babies went back to their respective sides and all parents on both sides visibly relaxed. It's a cool relationship that I wish we saw more of. I'd like an update on the troop and pride one day.
Easy just like the January 6th incident at the cap what gave me a hard-on was seeing members of Congress crouching down trying to find some Way to get some protection and to get the f*** out of there I love that man these high and mighty m************ talking about their secret hollow Hall of Congress we're on their knees before the American people. I mean this was f****** priceless I never in my lifetime thought I would see some s*** like that not in my lifetime not in this life never. These are precious memories I am going to have for a very long time I wouldn't care if I was homeless living in the forest or the desert I'm going to have this burnt into my memory it was truly a beautiful thing for the first time in their miserable life they were made to heal just like you do a dog to the American people that people power is what get f****** things done.
This just opens up a lot of questions for me: 1.) How did this alliance get started? How did the baboons overcome their natural tendency to flee and make noise? 2.) Does the resident male lion accept this arrangement? They tend to be more aggressive 3.) I wonder if this has ever occured before in nature and if baboons have done this with other predators (hyenas, wild dogs, leopards, etc)
1. The baboons probably did it accidentally the first few times and then realized that they can survive by helping the lions. 2. He probably realized that its mutually beneficial for both his pride and the baboons / he realized that its easier and the kodoe is a lot more food. 3. It has probably occurred somewhere else in the wild. But no, they only do this with the lion, because they can fight the cheetah, caracal and other predators in Africa. And leopards aren't social enough. (leopards are also weary of baboons, because baboons are in family groups)
Good questions, here are some possible answers... 1) Baboons aren't as frightful as you think and they can adapt easily. For example, humans hunt baboons but baboons in areas where humans don't hunt them are not afraid of them anymore. All animals can adapt like this, but baboons perhaps faster. The alliance probably started simply because it was extremely successful, a satisfied lion will not waste energy chasing a baboon which is difficult to catch and does not have as much meat as other prey. 2) has been plausibly answered by another commenter, personally I don't know what a male lion would do in this situation, I don't know if it would be a problem or not. 3) the trick the baboons are using relies on an ambush. Lions are ambush predators and the same technique would not work with pursuit predators such as hyenas and wild dogs. Leopards are ambush predators but they are baboons' number one predator, I doubt they would ever risk such an alliance with them. They would be lucky to spot the leopard to begin with. Leopards prefer smaller prey and can catch them in the trees with ease. Anyway, those are just some ideas however I don't really know the answers and have many questions of my own. Good luck brother.
@@Kgoki890 they are still smarter than their prey however. Plus animals form aliances all the time even if they arent very smart..if they notice its benifical to both of them they simply keep on their role.

Yeah its like an alliance between horse and grass.

They didn't abandoned their instinct, they extended it.
You don't know what instinct means... intelligence and situational adaptation are the exact opposite of instinct
Odilon- In intelligent animals, instinct can be coupled with logic. They’re following their survival instinct, but in a complex, rational way.
@@elhammo7478 Instinct : "a largely inheritable and unalterable tendency of an organism to make a complex and specific response to environmental stimuli without involving reason". Merriam-Webster dictionary
"a natural ability that helps you decide what to do or how to act without thinking" Cambridge dictionary

They just discovered politics..
Give them enough rope.. 😈
@@AnomiEj From the wiki article on survival instinct, aka self-preservation:
"Self-preservation is essentially the process of an organism preventing itself from being harmed or killed and is considered a basic instinct in most organisms."
But also:
"Self-preservation is also thought by some to be the basis of rational and logical thought and behavior."
Basic instincts do not exist in a vacuum. In a complex, intelligent animal, instincts are wired into a brain that also contains a frontal cortex and rational thought. So there's definitely interplay between the two.
Also from the wiki article: "However, when introduced to a novel threat, many species will have a self-preservation response either too specialised, or not specialised enough, to cope with that particular threat."
This is why enhanced intelligence makes the survival instinct more effective. Because it's an adaptation to increase the complexity and flexibility of your response to threats.

This just opens up a lot of questions for me:
1.) How did this alliance get started? How did the baboons overcome their natural tendency to flee and make noise?
2.) Does the resident male lion accept this arrangement? They tend to be more aggressive
3.) I wonder if this has ever occured before in nature and if baboons have done this with other predators (hyenas, wild dogs, leopards, etc)
The National Geographic video is also here on youturbe, and it said this pride has no male.
Baboons eat left overs
