Hawaii and Idaho were the only ones who answered satisfyingly in my opinion. The others either went around in circles or delivered their answers less sincerely.
Miss Idaho was first here with 9.62 Miss Hawaii Brooke Lee was third place in this round with 9.450, barely ahead than miss Florida with 9.443. This was really close call for Brooke!

But instead she get to moved on and pulled a coup and moved into the final 3 while front runner Florida stalled in fourth place. Also with Idaho. This was the last year of the top 6 format, because the next year they would revert to a top 5 then a final 3. Idaho made it to the top 6 in 6th place. She would've been out of the running the next year.
Going first in the top 6 was almost always a kiss of death. Brook, Kenya Moore at Miss USA ‘93, Taryn Mansell of Aruba at MU ‘96 and Shelly Moore at TUSA ‘97 were the only ones who went first in the top 6 round and advanced in the top 3 in the 1990-1997 era. (And 3 out of those 4 would go on to win!) EDIT: Forgot about Miss Colombia at MU '90 and ‘94 and Miss Venezuela at MU '93. So only 7 out of 24 times, not a great average.
Idaho entered the top 6 in 6 place and yet entered the final 3 with the highest top 6 Q&A score. If there was a top 5 like next year in 1998, she would've been out of the competition and Florida, who was the leader of the semi-finals, would've moved into third place.
Brook Lee had brains and poise. Her answers both at Miss USA and Miss Universe were just so full of substance that they couldn't deny her winning (but yes, facial and physically she's not stunning)
She may not be stunning facially to others, but to some she has this exotic look. I personally think she's one of the most loved and unforgettable Miss Universe. Have u seen her today? She's aging so well compared to some of the past Miss Universes who aged so fast......beauty fades!!!!
Miss Idaho was first here with 9.62 Miss Hawaii Brooke Lee was third place in this round with 9.450, barely ahead than miss Florida with 9.443. This was really close call for Brooke!
Nonsense. Her answers in Miss USA were great but her answer in Universe had ZERO substance. It was pure gimmicks. Had she not been Miss USA she would have never won Miss Universe.
Brooke Lee is incomparable in looks, personality and brains! Out of all the contestants that have competed in this pageant over the years, she was THE BEST representative we've ever had along with Terri Utley fromArkansas who won in 1982. Both were spectacular! I'm sick of hearing that looks were lacking. People making these remarks are shallow and artificial since we all know that the definition of real beauty is a combination of factors....including charm, intelligence, being articulate and poised addition to exterior beauty. Brooke had the complete package and she makes you feel comfortable and easy to talk to without being phony and plastic.
Whether Brook Lee’s view in 1997 aligned with your opinion of Marijuana, she articulated her rationale spontaneously, confidently and beautifully with a great personable touch. Philippines was asked a similar question at MU2018 and had a clearly inferior answer, even though this question had frankly been asked a few other times between 1997 and 2018. The standards of MU contestants answering questions appear to have dropped over the years, although Zozibini Tunzi kind of salvaged things in 2019, probably one of the most articulate public speakers at MU ever in its history.
I do agree, however, I think it is also up to generation difference which marijuana was well-known for addictive substance as well as the ongoing researchs of medical benefits of marijuana use. I do personally think if Brooke were to answer this question again these days, she would have given the different thought.

Brooke owned this pageant. She is so articulate and finishes her thoughts profoundly and concisely. Miss Tennesee looked like a drag queen and her answer was arrogant. Miss Idaho gave a strong, well thought out answer. Miss Utah rambled and seemed a little nervous which worked against her. Great job by all of them, and refreshing questions. However, judges (and fans) must remember that the judging and scoring must be not solely on the answer but of overall impression and performance. They must keep in mind, who would be the best candidate to be Miss....whatever pageant. This year Miss USA 1997 was an example of most of the panel scoring only the answer. They forgot about what to consider. If they weren't ignorant or forgetful and judged correctly, perhaps Tennessee and even Hawaii wouldn't have made top 3. Brooke Lee is perfection.
Hawai’i had the best Q&A. Her answer was personal, humble and anyone can relate. No wonder she won.
Too conservative her answer. However, it's 1997 so it's kind of justifiable.

Her beauty shines more because of her wit and personality.
So it's a beauty pageant for beautiful girl and she lacks physical beauty, why is she the best???
