    I would recommend the TI-Nspire CX CAS. It is permitted on the AB or BC exam and you will enjoy having it around for any future math class as well.

    Awesome! Now I know I can use it. At first I thought CAS couldn't solve simple equations for some reason.

    Most certainly. I have enjoyed using it AP Calculus for many years. There are a number of files on TI's website (and mine) for learning and doing calculus

    I used the TI-89 in my pre-calc and calc class for 10 years, but when the TI-Nspire came out 4 years ago or so, I've been using that ever since. There are so many reasons why I would recommend, but space does not allow. A summary the reasons can be found on my blog. Also I highly recommend posting this question with to TI-Nspire Google Group to get a response from Statistics teachers as well. Links to these can be found from my channel site.

    Yes, and it is called Press-to-Test (PTT) mode. Some people put their Nspire CAS into PTT, which disables some CAS functionality in the default setting, e.g. solve( ), however it is handy to have the cord and another handheld OR the software (or the free Computer Link software) in order to get out of Press-to-Test.

    The first question may be best directed at 1-800-TI-CARES (if you are in the U.S.). I would say, use what you have. You've got the package license, then use it. Some tips about graphing on a limited domain can be view on a youtube video called "TI-Nspire Graph Inverse limit domain x=" Use the vertical bar | , such that.

    I hear you. When I teach summer workshops where the teachers get a TI-Nspire CX or TI-Nspire CX CAS with the cost of the professional development, I try to encourage them to choose CAS (or at least know that it exists). So many times I've heard, "I would have picked CAS if I knew what it could do for me and my teaching." For those interested in summer workshops, I have info on my website or TI's website.

    1. You should probably get what your teacher recommends. 2. I wholeheartedly recommend CAS in Algebra 1. It is quite well suited for Alg 1 & 2. Being able to solve equations is a great tool for exploring, discover, as well as remediation and checking your work.

      spazvapes I have a ti 89. In comparison, I like the this one better. However, I don't know how to do ram sums and some other stuff that I do on the 89. I'm sure I haven't used this one to its full potential tho. I really like this one because it's perfect for stats and calculus, and other classes. It's very organized. The documents can be confusing but I got used to it now.

    Can I use the CAS in in Algebra 1 to do stuff like equations? Although I will use it for calculus and in college (if it isn't out of date). I heard it's not suited for Algebra 1 or 2 and that I should get the one without CAS.

  • @covenantbird
    @covenantbird  13 років тому

    @kkwalshiee The TI-Nspire CX CAS is better: It has more built in functionality that is a boon for mathematics and science exploration and discovery. For the teacher, I say "Get the CAS!" Good question about the exam. The CX CAS is permitted on the PSAT, SAT, and the AP exams. CX is allowed on those and the ACT and IB. Many state math tests do not permit CAS, but do permit the TI-Nspire CX.
    If you need to take the ACT, then borrow a friend's who got the TI-Nspire CX, while you enjoy CX all year.

  • @covenantbird

    CAS = Computer Algebra System. It has some additional features beyond the TI-Nspire CX. On my blog (click covenantbird, click the link to my blog, then search Computer Algebra System) I wrote: "The opportunity to use mathematical technology empowers students to wonder 'what if' and then actually investigate it. I think this is particularly true for the TI-Nspire CAS (computer algebra system - for a comparison to the numeric Nspire check out this link)." [Link is live on my blog.]

    TI-Nspire CX CAS easily wins for many reasons: (1) speed of graphing, doing calculations, running programs, etc; (2) color when graphing functions, 3D, slopefields (again it has this functionality built in and does it much faster than the 89); (3) color in mathematical interactive Notes pages, etc; (4) Nspire CX graphs conics, (5) 'pretty print' on the input, not just the output... Check out my godly dominion blog for more details on why I use TI-Nspire instead of other things. I used the 89

    Thinking of buying one.. currently in cal II integrals.. ive been using the Ti-83 and can do everything i need on there, however i heard this is good for linear algebra and vector calculus which i will be taking..I just like how the format for inputting math equations are.. everyone in my cal class has this or the ti-84.. only thing is most of the students have a hard time doing the math problems by hand and i dont, because since i been using the old Ti-83, my algebra is superb.. i just hope i dont get lazy and depend to much on this computer to do all the work for me.. Do you find yourself or students relying too much on these computers to where they have a difficult time in doing a problem like finding the volume on a solid using disk, washer or shell methods?

    • @covenantbird
      @covenantbird  9 років тому +1

      Silver Reyes Yes, it is a delightful tool for linear algebra and all levels of calculus and on. Students still need to know the calculus for the set up. Back in the day we would use a table of integrals to solve the difficult ones. Now we can explore and do more mathematics because it can get done more efficiently.

    Is this calculator relatively easy to get the hang of quickly? It seems as though it is pretty simple, so long as you don't delve into anything too complicated. Some features that I am really wanting to see in this calculator would be changing equations into other forms (y=mx+b , Ax+By=C. , etc.), getting the main info (slope, y value, x value) directly from putting in the equation, clear functional notation capabilities (being able to input a question written directly from a text book Ex: 28 x 8^6, 917,000,000,000).

      There is a TI-Nspire Google Group. Just today someone mentioned a book (electronic book) called "Using CAS Features Like a Champion" on the TI-Nspire CAS. On the TI-Nspire Group Website, under tns files, you can find a number of Calculus activities that I designed so that students are better equipped to use their TI-Nspire CAS. For differential equations I would especially recommend "Infestation to Extermination." Chemistry activities can be found through TI's website education.ti.com I highly recommend the periodic table available on the Nspire group website.

    This may seem like a silly question, but I really need to know because I'm having trouble with this on my current calculator. When you plug in multiple equations into the graphing screen, will the Nspire show the various functions in different colors? Let's say I have entries in Y1, Y2, and Y3. +Jakki Rose I recommend you join the Nspire Google Group (you can Google search for it) and ask all your questions. Yes, the TI-Nspire CX will automatically show the graphs in different colors. Instead of using Y1, the Nspire's default is to use f1(x), f2(x), ...

      Do you see the button under ENTER? There is a ?!> If you push that button twice and then enter it will give you the factorial.

    Can this calculator solve : 1] Analyzing Function. 2] Exponential and logarithmic Relations and functions. 3]Trigonometric identities and equations. 4]Conic sections and parametric equations. ??? Pls reply!

      @covenantbird  10 років тому +1

      Yes, the TI-Nspire CAS can solve equations of all sorts. If you are asking can it graph and analyze functions, then the answer is yes. It can graph conics and parametric. It can analyze conics. There are also nice things you can do with tcollect & trig expand to work with trig identities. So my answer would be YES.

      (if you still don't know) you press the control button then press 'on'. it automatically saves what everything you've done.

    can you put text or pictures on it?? there is no law in my country to forbid calculators of any kind so this would be super awesome to cheat!

    For instructions to install the software you can do a google search of "TI-Nspire installation activation Guidebook" and you can get instruction in a number of languages. UA-cam comments don't all me to give the direct link.

    does anyone know how to switch from radians to degrees and vice versa on this calculator so i can solve sin(60) the right way?

    • @covenantbird
      @covenantbird  10 років тому

      1. I recommend keeping it set in radians and using the degree symbol. sin(60 degrees) = sqrt(3)/2. The degree symbol is found by pressing the pi button near the bottom left of the keypad.
      2.(a) From the home screen press 5, 2 Document Settings and change the settings to degrees. Be sure to make it the default so that the Scratchpad is in degrees.
      (b) Or access Settings when you are in a document, from DOC.
      (c) Or click the gear in the upper right.
      3. Regarding "vice versa," did you see that there is a little r near where the degree symbol is?

    I am a senior engineering major in college. I like the idea that this calculator was designed to be used for AP and standardized college entrance exams... But why the heck would a high school kid need a calculator this powerful? I get by in most of my classes with a simple scientific calculator, so why would a high school student need this? Oh well.
