I’m just back from Lisbon and it’s hard to describe how magical the pastel de nata is. The filling is creamy and sweet while the pastry is perfectly flaky. The cinnamon spice is nice but honestly it’s perfect without as well
Are there any dim sum spots or Chinese bakeries there? Would be interesting to see the Chinese style egg tarts being served in Portugal.
Chinese egg tarts came from the Portuguese in Macau.
@@mongomondomongoI had the Chinese version (taught to them by Portuguese explorers) and it was delicious and very close to the Portuguese one.
@@ingGS I think the Chinese ones are a pale imitation of the real thing. I like them but given a choice, I'd go for the Portuguese ones every time.
If you have a Chinese dim sum restaurant near you, you can get it. Macau was a Portuguese colony and exported this pastry around it's colony 😊
I spent two weeks in Lisbon for work before Covid. I had grilled fish for lunch and dinner and it was a rare occasion where I lost weight in Europe. The only thing that kept me close o my weight were these amazing treats. You can get them almost anywhere but the ones at this shop were the best.
They are heavenly! A must to try in Portugal.
They are to die for! One can never have just ONE pastel de nata!! Once I had six of them in a row... heavenly... until I got sick😂🙈
I did that too in Rome, after I had a 12 hour stop over in Lisbon
What an amazing tradition, I'll have to check this out my next trip to Europe. Cheers!
Beware because they have become very popular and most places offer bad imitations…

Pastel de nata is one of the most delicious treats I have ever had, it is so good… you have to try it!
Looks & sounds Scrumptious ❤
Newark, NJ Teixeira Bakery. The best! What memories this evokes😋
We were there, and it is awesome! Amazing treat! Can't wait to go back... :)
this place is delicious. i actually thought it was way better than the one currently listed as the best. went out of my way to bring home a box of these
Trivia note: The US reality show The Amazing Race has been on for 34 Seasons, & they have traveled to Portugal for 3 of them; Seasons 3, 23, & 33.
That place is wonderful. It's in Belem outside of Lisbon.
Belém is in Lisbon 😅
The uk is currently obsessed with pastel de nata…me too lol they’re everywhere
Unfortunately they often are lousy imitations.
Looks and sounds wonderful. The history makes for a harming bit of background. Now have a reason for returning to Portugal.
Love this
Best I've tried, ever! No one does it better than Pasteis de Belem!
Santa Nata in London are just as good (the owner worked at the original place)
Theirs were terrible! You can get much better without the crowds. When correctly made they are delicious.
@@selin8274 Do you mean Santa Nata or Pastéis de Belém? I've had from both places many times and was never disappointed.
@@eleanor.shadowthere is a place in Newark NJ, same thing the guy used to work in Belem and are just about as good.
@@Gman539 good to know the wonderful flavours are spreading throughout the world!
I am not a fan of custard in general, but I did truly enjoy these.
I flew TAP in 2017, a discount Portuguese airline from Rome to Marrakesh, had a 12 hour stop over by choice. I had my 1 st pastry after dinner, also took away half dozen of the pastry at the airport to enjoyed it in Rome 😅
Can i have one before i start my diet
The Pasteis truly are the world’s best custard pie. Absolutely delicious and addictive. The only problem is that many places use the same name to sell BAD imitations. So you should look for preferably Portuguese tradition bakeries. Or look for a good traditional recipe and make some yourself !
If you go to Portugal you must try it. I loved
Gotta love that American accent. 😂 But nice try. 👍 Pastéis de Belém. I’ve known that Lisbon pastry bakery for 35 years, my parents longer then that. It’s gotten bigger, richer and more famous. But the natas? They thankfully stayed as delicious as ever. If you enjoy sweets in general and custards specifically, it’s a must try! Enjoy. Bom desfrute de Portugal.
I lived in Hong Kong for 15 years and these are readily available there and in Macau, a former Portuguese colony. Ate them maybe twice and didn't like them all that much.
OMG...this could be listed in my bucket list he he he
I’ve been there, done that. But there are many more things to get in Lisbon, such as grilled sardines.
I hope you thoroughly enjoyed this assignment, Ramy!
Looks so delicious and crisp.
Next you should come to Denmark and try the real Danish pastry. 😊
You'll probably stay here for ever.
Love it. Made ratatouille pizza tonight. You have allowed me to channel my inner pizza creative genuis. The skies the limit. Keep up the good work.
“More than one” said the American 😂
I'd have 3! ❤
PASTEL DE NATA = EQUALS = EGGS PUDIM CREAM PASTRY THE DOUGH IS IN THIN CROCANT LAYERS BAKED.
DELICIOUS BREAKFAST.
I made one batch, they disappeared in minutes!
Same. it was a bit of work to make the laminated dough, but they were worth it.
There is a place in Newark NJ the guy used to work at the place in Belem. Its just about as good as the one in Belem.
But the reporter is wearing flip flops in the kitchen - why?
The Portuguese tarts that I had in Macau were very good, better taste than 90% of the ones in Portugal.
people who say they don't like sweets??!!!!
PLEASE write down the recipe and put it in a bank or someplace. God forbid it should ever be lost! 😂😂💕💕
The next Mission Impossible plot, to get this recipe 😅 this message will self destruct in 10 seconds 😅
Its a pitty That you Don,t Show the Shop inside. The Small rooms there are to eat the Pasteis de Belem, with the th Azulejos Walls the proud of the Portugues People and the Historie they Tell. Then you could Sea the 200 years of Existenz. I found this Video in this Case disapointed.
I've not eaten processed food in 31 years.
I don’t think pastries count as ultra-processed food
Who cares mate? You have a lot of videos to post the same comment, so better get start
@@hugogrilo9742 I can't even understand that that means.
@@VitalityMassage explains a lot
You the man :)
Looks very yummy yummy.. if not that we are forced to deal with narrow human limits.. how many thousand calories such cute cookies? I already starve a week in order to afford myself eating fresh bread once a month...😂😂😂😅😅😅
Lidl do a very good one.😀
It's a good thing that he doesn't like sweets. If I was managing the shop, I would be eating all the egg tarts instead of selling them -_-
I prefer the Macau style Portuguese egg tarts. Less sweet.
They're good but not the best
40? Running a Portuguese bakery must be a hard life.
Tradition and Love for the Produkt. You can taste it!
You should've done a better research, CBS, Pastéis de Belém ARE NOT Pastéis de Nata and it's kind of a sacrilege to call them that. You just shot yourself in the foot by using the term Pastel de Nata in a video dedicated to the Pastéis de Belém.
I usually use this analogy to differentiate them: Pastéis de Belém are proprietary software, Pastéis de Nata are open-source software. Pastéis de Belém are unique, exclusive, they have a trademarked name and no one else can make them except for that bakery. Pastéis de Nata are everywhere, everyone can make them the way they want and they can compete against each other for the best one but no Pastel de Nata is better or worse than a Pastel de Belém because they're two different things.
It’s just an egg 🥚 tart
pastell de naadaa 🤦🏻♀That was so cringe.
Olive oil 😢
No,..Butter! They use Manteiga.
The secret ingredients?
MSG - MAGICAL SUGAR GRANULES.
The Chinese will replicate these secret tarts.
If they can replicate Van Gogh, Picasso, Michaelangelo, and other treasured paintings, this is easy peezy for them.
Lose the vocal tics.
These aren't even the best ones. I prefer the pastéis de nata from Manteigaria.
