I have the dubious honour of having driven all those thumpers on the Uckfield branch
I was at Norwood MT when this footage was filmed.
    Happy days

In the 70's I remember the rather silly thing where using 33's and coaching the old commuter stuff used to come in at LB plat 7 and 7a, BR spent a fortune putting in a 33 sized headshunt at neck of those platforms then someone decided "Oh lets use thumpers instead" and no more coached stock and a huge waste of money that despite its disuse had to be thoroughly maintained by the S&T as well as the individual signal relay points. On the old Bricklayers branch, down the ramp and along a bit was a signal that despite the track mysteriously vanishing, it was still extant, the S&T would maintain and repair both the branch exit signal and the one at the bottom of the ramp which local kids would rip to pieces within a few weeks but the Bricklayers brand never actually closed, it was for years mothballed with hopes Royal Mail or a dedicated freight station would reuse the line.

I have fond memories of Selhurst, up until my dismissal from BR I used to man the TOPs cabin and on occasion had to wander down into the depot to deliver papers or pick up completion dockets, strange thing too as my father had instructed me how to run a NX panel, I also would get the yardmaster give me a bell to open up such and such a lane and get a permission token from London Bridge for unit to entry or exit on the Norwood side using the tiny NX panel in the TOPs cabin. If my father was on duty over on the SE panels at LB, they used to rib me rotten calling me a pretend signalman and much ribald comments before I got the pathing, ironically the cabin was adjacent to old Norwood Junc's old Odeon which I saw in my younger years as well as the mighty Gloucs Rd Junc Odeon if I was allowed to go into work with me father on nights.

Loved the trains of the NSE era, just such cool mix of 60's, 70's and 80's stock. Most of its all gone now, the most modern trains seen in is this video, 317's? are on the way out :( Loved NSE livery too and that garish blue flecked seat moquette, while it wasn't as classy as BR blue / Grey is was more cheerful, had a certain tacky toothpaste charm about it, most of the franchise livery's that came after it were pretty crap, up until more recently where they've started to hark back to more classic looking schemes.

Yeah, since then i have researched that the last SUB was withdrawn from domestic serices in 1983 and, as you say, acouple were retained for departmental use. Thanks for the info.
