Because this video centers around the idea of overcoming apathy through the connections we forge with others, I feel it's only fair to dedicate this video to the person who helped me make it.
If you look at the large gaps of time between my uploads, it's safe to assume I haven't always been the most motivated. While I enjoy making videos, it can be incredibly time-consuming, tedious and demoralizing at times.
I had always worked on my videos alone, and because I lacked outsider perspective, I strived to make them absolutely perfect, and if they were anything less, they were garbage that wasn't worth the effort.
Being an incredibly small channel with less than 300 subscribers, you might think this is an incredibly strong overreaction. And you'd be right, but I couldn't change the way I thought.
Eventually, the stresses of life combined with my perfectionist mindset became too much, and I abandoned most of my projects and hobbies. Slowly, I started to become used to the emptiness of not pursuing any personal passion or goal, and drifted through most of my days on complete autopilot.
I was beyond lucky enough to stumble into someone who, without even trying, showed so much care and interest to my passions, my hobbies, my interests, the things that make me, me
You've probably noticed that the commentary in the last third of this video is much more profound and elegant, which is a direct result of their help. In fact, if it wasn't for the influence this person has had on my life, I might not have related to the themes in 1999 at all, and this video wouldn't exist.
So I want to thank you, for pulling me out of my own cycle of apathy, for motivating me to make my silly little videos, and for making the effort to see every part of me, even the parts I was so dedicated to hiding.
Thank you for healing things in me, you didn't even know needed to be healed.

I love these kinds of videos now can I request an interesting subject oddly nobody done yet. Warframe has many similarities with Buddhism the lotus is important in Buddha I know many other religions used it too but still I feel warframe has many relation of Buddha such as the lotus herself
      identity crisis of 3 personality
Buddhism views the human identity as a construct that is transient and impermanent, and that clinging to it can create suffering. I saw something else related but at this moment I can't find it. I am not religious at any means as I learn more about Buddha I can't help that reminds me of warframe.
Oh right the color of the lotus purple is interesting.
Buddhism that represents spiritual transformation, enlightenment, and self-awakening

@@StrongGuySean haha no I don't mind, I never made a UA-cam video before. I am not qualified try to learn Buddhism. I just happen to saw some connections between Warframe. Since I Google what the meaning behind the lotus then learn the purple lotus is the rarest color of lotus. It an interesting stuff, such as the symbolism with lotus flower and tenno
It goes like this, this plant grows such an ugly place (the swamp mud) yet it able to grow and bloom beautifully in such conditions.
Much like the tenno from Umbra story remind me of this. An tenno sees an broken thing, it able to understand it and take away it pain.
anyways I'm sure there way more examples what the teaching of Buddhism. I'm not religious at all, I find it interesting a fun connection. Beside there is already a warframe monk I kinda wish it has a lore of at least who he was before become a warframe. All I can imagine an Orokin assemble and gathered all greatest warriors throughout the Galaxy to help figut the sentient. But turns out they are just ingredients of war.

Even the scene at the end of the Finale shows us exactly who the Hex are. Quincy sticks around on the sideline because despite the strife between him and Arthur, he does owe him one, and he does care. Aoi is obviously still concerned both because he is her ex and also just because that's one of their own. Amir seems slightly aloof but is definitely still concerned. His looking around shows his anxiety. Lettie, of course, is the medic. Rushing in to save someone in need. But Eleanor? Eleanor is walking slowly, away from the group. Because she feels her condition has driven a wedge between her and the rest of the Hex.

Albrecht's only way of describing what wally is is that, something indifferent to the world, with no "care", that "feed" on our emotions and turn that agaisnt us. The power of love is thus not actually a dumb weapon, it's an actual poison to something like that. Loving something is caring about it, it's a stabilizing force, alike a beacon in the dark, something that protect us from the entropic emotional devastation that wally use to turn us into food. Strong bonds tame the void itself.
So yeah, getting pegged by Eleanor does hurt wally, as while the railing itself is actually not important, the reason why you are getting your back end absolutly anihilated and turned into a quivering mess by Eleanor IS important.

It... strikes ya hard, hits the soul... when ya have put someone who walked seconds ago, six feet bellow. 2009-2012 was something I won't ever forget. Military records might be smoked, but the memories aren't gone. So I, for one, think your spot on... 'cus it never really leaves you. You learn to adapt to the aftermath, functionally or in a disjointed way. For me, Amir wants to remain free from havin' blood on his hands... and if we could do so, I'd be all for it - my hands, and in turn, my drifters' hands are already coated in blood. Let's see what the future brings us?

And when you start thinking about how it is possible that the drifter did the time thing, it gets even more crazy.
Like we might just be in the void, 1999 being a duviri, conceptual place type deal. It would answer some Kin message questions from Elanor about how can the void reach the hex without a heart of deimos. Also the void tongue popping up sometimes and even the rap tap tapping in the mall's small tvs.
But that would also mean, that by technicality the Hex might not be fully real. Which is kinda sad.

19:50 Albrecht's arc up until now has truly embodied the Nietzsche quote:
“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.”
The Indifference, or more specifically the man in the wall, is the conceptual embodiment of the abyss that stares back at us. And in order to fight that entity, Albrecht became a monster. He knows this and wants us to avoid the same fate as him.

I think in some ways, it may go further then that. I've heard the Void creates echos of emotions. I think that, by stealing the MITW's power, he cause him to shift towards being the Indifference. And us, by taking it with consent, and by learning love, to connect with other, we won't just be able to fight it back, but change it. I always found it weird that while we see the Indifference posses people, the only ones we see it directly take the form of, is us and Albrecht... The two people it came into contact with (us in the Zariman, and Albrecht when he stole his power.)
Much like how Albrecht experimented on others, the MITW experimented on us. Almost like it's an echo of Albrecht.

I had thought of something similar. This sense that in most of the other cases the goons end up as obstacles who would throw themselves to their deaths regardless. Meanwhile the fact that Albrecht (Who we don't even know whether it's Albrecht or Wally talking) explicilty tells is makes it more suspicious, and a bit of a sense that Rusalka isn't even aware of what happened for the past Void knows how long she was possessed.
Edit/Addition: Like even the specific answer you can give "This isn't really Her" points to the explicit fact that it's more about how Wally is puppeting people into doing something they aren't even aware of. Yes, Rusalka is an individual we'd probably end up killing anyway, but the fact that she's literally possessed makes it more complicated. If she's going to die it should be for her own failings, not as collateral for being puppeted by someone else.

Glad to see the writing in the KIM messenger getting more appreciation rather than just being written of as a dating sim. As someone who is used to and enjoys fragmented storytelling style like that in From Software's games, Fate/Grand Order etc., I really loved what they DE did here. I'd add that its not just fleshing out the Hex and conveniently dumping lore; it also gives more character to the Drifter in a meaningful way. We see a lot of emotions from the Drifter based on how they interact with the Hex as well as their feelings regarding certain stuff like how they view the Operator or Dominus Thrax.

I love the comparison and contrast between Drifter and Operator. In the Sacrifice, we learned that basic human empathy was a concept so foreign to the Orokin that they saw our ability to take away pain as a super power. But we always had that empathy, thanks to Margulis and Euleria.
By playing as Drifter, we are given the experience of building and discovering that empathy from the perspective of someone who has completely forgotten what it means to feel.
I dont remember who said it, but while watching a different video essay on 1999, someone said "The opposite of Love is not Hate, it's apathy, the complete lack of emotional response at all" and that stuck with me ever since. I feel like 1999 teaches us that love and hate can both drive us; both can be used constructively and destructively, but apathy is total destruction. There's nothing human left when emotion is taken out of the picture.

Entrati: 1) made the man in the wall penetrate the origin system. 2) abandoned his own family, leaving them to rot with infestation on Deimos. 3) sent tons of innocent animals to the void, just to kill them and experiment them. 4) travelled back in time to give a serum to the Hex to "save" them, then to kill them all in the nuclear blast, and he wants us to help.
The man in the wall, on the other hand, saved the drifter and lotus both from Ballas' rage when he was going to make the Sun collapse.

The greatest weapon against indifference is love. Because the opposite of love... *Is* indifference. Not hate. Not disgust.
    Indifference.
Love, is an overwhelming cocktail of emotion. There's care, sadness, compassion, unity, desire... indifference, is an emotional void. Indifference is what you get when emotion dies.

So a little bit of spoilers for the chats here, when you get in good graces with Quincy he basically fully believes that if you were to go back to the present to fight your battles, that you won’t forget about the Hex and he actively wants to help he wants to be brought into the present to help YOU because you’ve become part of the misfit family, The Hex.
Basically saying that if it’s possible to bring The Hex to the present somehow, every single one of them will gladly fight for you in your war, because after everything you’ve done for them, they don’t want you to suffer alone ever again and will fight with everything they have to prove that.
On a side note, I’m hoping after we get Techrot liches that we get more Proto frames, not only just for new characters with their own diverse personalities, but it’d also make way to rework other long forgotten/overshadowed frames such as Loki and Nekros (Nekros feels less necromancer to me and more gravedigger okay?)

We are more connected than ever by technology in theory, yet so many people ARE indifferent to what is going on in the world around them and are disconnected on a close interpersonal level. Our modern world's interconnectivity is a blessing and a curse in this sense and I believe we fall victim to making ourselves numb to extremely important things that impact us and those close to us.

Since the operator would know the feeling of letting others in, to help others, to show compassion and empathy. More than the Drifter who was, as you said, jaded and apathetic due to their time in Duviri. Thanks for the video, it showed up a few days ago as recommended so I don't know what you did with the algorithm, but it worked. When I saw the title I knew that I would love it because I noticed that a lot of people don't usually understand the messages in all Warframe quests, well almost all, and I saw some comments about 1999 that showed me what I always considered about the game: "Warframe is a game that forces you to understand patience, and if you do and take your time (and I don't mean farming) you will be worthy to understand its beauty and feel it". Warframe never has problems with the plot of the island of content, as each island always explains stories related to everything else, you just need the patience and will to see them. 1999 just did the job for you, or more like... forced you to do it.
I have been struggling in my life because I thought everyone was, though not identical, similar to me. It turns out that I am way more than a rare kind of person, and that always rubs me the wrong way. The thing that you said in the video about "I don't know them, I don't care about them" is something that I really never understood because I never needed a reason to love someone. For me, everyone gave me something of value, even the ones who bullied me or despised me. As I see it, a tree always makes sounds when it falls, no matter if someone is hearing it or not.
Even though it wasn't 1999 the quest that helped me realize this, it was The Sacrifice, it helped me to put into words what I already felt before, I cannot be indifferent to others, but myself. It is difficult for me how hard it is to express the difficulty on how hard is to balance love and indifference, or in otherwordss, what is important and what is not. It sometimes feels like we have a limited amount of importance we can give things and we have to sacrifice something to have "more space to care".
I have just started to try to give myself some kind of importance like you seem to do to yourself. I loved the video, even if there are things that I don't share, and you helped me a lot inwithomething personal without even trying to. I wanted to share it with you with an honest comment to encourage you to go out there and be yourself. You don't know when you will save someone else's life.

I will say, some of the dialogue options you get are like bad and worse and lowkey I don't blame people for picking the wrong one sometimes. There's a particularly infamous line with Eleanor and like, yes it's obviously bad, but the other line is also bad. It just sounds so dismissive and honestly cold when Eleanor is being vulnerable and scared to you. Like unless you knew about the hero virus thing, I can see someone seeing the choice, seeing that at least that line isn't being dismissive and go for it, only for it to blow up in their face. If you had the hero virus talk then yeah you should see why that blows up in your face, but without that you just have to guess correctly then. My point is, certainly you deserve it a lot of the time, but Drifter is bad at talking to people sometimes, and it feels like you're just trying to get them to say the least bad thing rather than something good.

Oh my god, I was BRISTLING in the beginning of this video from the way you were talking about 1999 and The Hex. It was one of those things that was like, "I begrudgingly see your point but HOW DARE YOU." I perhaps got attached to the Hex way too quickly (I tend to get invested in characters in stories), so it shook me to find someone who DIDN'T love them immediately. But... damn, you really make a good point. Why SHOULD we care about these random people at first? We have to learn to, because love opposes the Indifference. And yes, I think DE really pulled it off. You genuinely lay this out so well, partially through your negativity in the beginning, lol!
I think there's not enough attention paid in fandom discourse to how closed off the Drifter was. Like, they tend to make light of the whole Zariman/Duviri thing, probably as a defense mechanism to avoid remembering how absolutely insane and traumatic it all was. But as much as we/the Drifter need to get the Hex to open up to us... the Hex are getting the Drifter to open up as well. It starts with Amir asking us questions so we get more comfortable talking about our awful past, to stuff like Quincey calling us "space trauma," which kind of mimics our own way of making light of it all. But then we talk death with Lettie, and the Indifference with Eleanor, and as Arthur slowly opens up and asks us questions, there's that moment where he's like, "You were a CHILD." And it feels like the Drifter has to stop joking for a minute and take a step back and... actually acknowledge how fucked up it all was. And that acknowledgement, and being vulnerable with the Hex and finding them offering understanding and safety... the Drifter finally stops holding everyone at arm's length, and this is why they start saying that Höllvania is the only place that felt like home. Even though they're from thousands of years in the future.
So yes, to the point in this video... We needed to befriend the Hex to save them, but in turn, the Hex also save us. And that's what'll give the Drifter the power to oppose the Indifference. And god damn, Albrecht seems to have NO morals, but he really is trying to fix everything he broke, isn't he?

Totally right too, when Aoi was stuck under that truck I messed around with emotes for a bit for a funny screenshot, cause I too was indifferent

This video essay is absolutely fantastic. The editing work and delivery as well as how you presented your argument was incredibly well put together to the point where I was in absolute shock to see that you are only (at the time of my writing this) at 941 subscribers. This sort of analysis and lore explanation video is something that I would've expected from a channel with a million subs. You have my subscription and I'm really excited and hopeful to see you do more of these! I recently got back to Warframe and there is so much warframe lore that the general Warframe UA-cam community has not grazed yet and I'm really hoping you cover more Warframe lore! Would also love to see Warframe lore theory videos from you if that's something you might be interested in producing!

As a longstanding player (Loki starter), Warframe’s story has always been about empathy. Factions grow in the story based off of that connection. We see how the people of Fortuna lift together, how the Entrati family empathize and give each meaning, how the people of Cetus hold faith as a community. Every quest too. The Sacrifice showed us in the literal sense as we learn the Tenno’s take away the pain of the “ugly broken thing” which mirrors their own experience. Now the Drifter does so here with his own experience of hopelessness and isolation with the Hex.
The overall message of Warframe to me: the pain we experience in life can turn us bitter and alone, or we can use them as ways to connect with others and be stronger for it.

  • @CrowePerch
    @CrowePerch 3 дні тому

The KIM messaging caught me up to so much I missed like the Cephalon lore that was dropped around when DE started doing seasonal content. But I was surprised how good it was written to the point to where I got kinda sad when I found out the messaging stops when you max out your affinity with the Hex. I legitimately missed talking to these people to the point to where I’m seriously considering resetting it even if I end up with the same romance with Eleanor.

Really, really glad the Algorithm directed me towards your stuff. The Hex might be my favorite quest since The Sacrifice, and while TSD has…definitely shown its age, I didn’t think anything was going to come close to those emotional reveals again.
…but dammit, I want to fight for these friends I made, this found family, and you’ve done an incredible job of putting all these feelings I had into words.

This has been the best explanation of 1999 and Albrecht.
I knew I wasn’t crazy. I knew Albrecht had something in mind when he gave us the choice to leave or stay and save the Hex. He didn’t force us.
When we choose to stay, he shot us so then Drifter would wouldn’t hesitate in reverting the year. Bc that’s what I think caused Drifter to end up alone in the Zariman when they made deal. The hesitation to wanting it. And as a punishment for not truly wanting this was the consequence.
Even at the end of New year we, the Drifter gets to choose wether or not to fully reset the events (Kim dialogues). “Is this what you want?”

    Returning newbie here.
Started playing warframe like 8 months ago with few friends, then dropped it at the quest where you build railjack (i was mr 7 i think).
Decided to give it a try again on christmas, and it was a damn good decision. The quests, gameplay, grind, all of it is so good. But, the most important thing for me in games is lore, and Warframe excels in that.
The New War, Whispers in the walls and now 1999, all great story quests.
Anyways, loved this vid. Great job and keep it up ❤

Amazing job @StrongGuySean with this essay. Myself, a 1.9k hour player of Warframe, like you I was indifferent or apathetic for my own reasons towards the 1999 update. I was frustrated with the amount of content islands and wanted story connection. Truth be told even after I finished the mission and did bounties and interacted with the KIM System to learn about the Hex I still just didn't care because I forgot parts of the story.

I've never known i would need a video like this, but the timing is quite perfect. Amazing video and it also made me look at 1999 differently. I never really looked at albrecht's POV of this and what he was trying to do the whole time, maybe he isn't that bad of a guy after all.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the kind words! To some extent I do think Albrecht is damn-near irredeemable (the cavia and the animals that came before them being my primary example) but I dont think he's trying to redeem himself, just right as many of his wrongs as he can

    • @connormcconnell7805
      @connormcconnell7805 7 днів тому +2

@StrongGuySean I really don't think he gives a flying fuck about redemption except for one person. He wants to be redeemed in Loid's eyes.
Also I find it a bit funny that he basically lied through his teeth throughout most of the quest.
      1. He didn't want the bomb to go off
      2. He didn't want us to shoot the general
      3. He didn't want to go to Tau
He said all these things to manipulate us into growing our heart so we could fight the indifference with love.

maybe this isnt the video for it but i missed the part about the chatting system that lets you retell the whole warframe story through your own lense, brushing off things you dont care about and delve deeper into topics you feel strongly about, pretending to "tell a story" to npcs while solidifying the warframe lore in your own head.
its genius if you consider that people learn best when trying to teach others.

The picto chat messages almost made me drop my controller at one point. Quincy wanted me to tell him something that would make him hate me. And i got to answer what happened to their parents and what my tenno did. And as my tenno continued to explain what she did, i had to put the controller down otherwise i would have dropped it like my jaw. Still remains one of the most memorable moments in the game. Finally getting some info on two people we only know existed because of a borken picture frame.
