I have two tributes. A ASAT Classic and a Legacy. Love them both!
Yes. I got a Fullerton Deluxe Legacy HB. Really happy with it.
I have 3 G&Ls
A Fullerton ten-year-old butter blonde telecaster like
I have a strat like Fullerton Legacy
And I have ASAT Blues boy
Got an ASAT Special last year and love it. If I could have only one guitar it would be this one, love the Jumbo MFD pickups and the Saddle Lock Bridge.
I own an orange Skyhawk reissue and a made to order semi hollow asat classic, and I love them both!
I think it's worth noting that G&L has a model called the ASAT Special which has jumbo MFD pickups and a saddle -lock bridge, something that fender doesn't offer. Thanks, Leo!
I've been lusting after a tele style guitar for a while now, but I couldn't arrive at a decision. Thanks to watching a bunch of your tele comparison vids, I've decided to get a
I think you should have gone with th
it's the funniest comment ever
LOL !!! 👍🏆.
Best video yet ! Very descriptive and complete . Thanks for a Great job !
G&L is so under-rated. They make some FINE guitars.
they are rated pg-13 but should be rated R! something like that
I rate them G for Groovy, Man!
Mine rocked up in the worst condition ive ever had a guitar rock up in. I can't believe it ever left the factory like that. It was heartbreaking to send it back because those pickups sounded fat
I’ve been playing an Indonesian ASAT tribute for 7 years, and I couldn’t imagine playing another guitar at this point. It has taken a beating and still has a great sound. When I bought it, I also got a made in Mexico Telecaster, and sold the Tele within six months. I’ve always wanted a USA made one though, just hard to justify spending twice the price on. And from your demo here, I’m not really sold on it either. They sound damn close, closer than I was imagining they would.
nice!
I never had a G&L, but I recently picked up a 2nd hand ASAT Tribute Deluxe 2 (2 splittable humbuckers, , dark mahogany translucent finish called "Irish Ale"). I really like this guitar! Pickups are great, no need to upgrade. It's almost as good as my American Pro 1, but it does need a new switch. Good video!
Best end to a comparison video! Thanks Landon!
Wow, thanks!
I have an ASAT import model T-style. It has a humbucker in the neck and traditional single coil in the tray. Comfortable and sounds great. Under $400 new when I got it.
Thanks for the video and the nice comparison, Its weird the legacy Leo left us with Fender-MusicMan-G&L - he gave us choices and interesting progression
I used to own a Blues Boy Tribute. I wasn't crazy about the pickups or electronics and sold it.
Your video has convinced my to give G&L another try. I think I'll order the...
Honestly, great video this week.
I don’t make comments on this channel much but I have to say this channel has really picked up in terms of video quality. Keep up the great work!
And the Camera Dying was Comedy Gold 😂
hey thanks! ya the battery died before I could finis
Hi Landon! Thank you for the video! I have a Tribute. The nut is plastic. But it's good one, when i dropped it on a table it sounded nice, like quite hard material. It was too low from the factory - i had to up it a bit to resolve buzz, but some buzz still exist, i believe it would need frets grinding to resolve completely. Glad to know Deluxe is wider - for my small hands even a Trebute is bulk enough. The switch and potenciometers in Tribute are chipeaper. Also Tribute series has different options for necks - from glossy to almost bare necks. In Russia a Deluxe costs as three Tributes. And great vid's ending by the way! hahahaha))))
I have the G&L Fullerton Deluxe ASAT Classic in sunburst. Beautiful guitar. Also have a G&L Fullerton Legacy Custom in red with matching headstock and black pickguard. G&L makes great guitars.
They just gifted you a Fullerton that you got to keep? That's incredible! I love G&L's, I've become such a fan of G&L this year. Within three months I've bought a G&L Espada (Fullerton), a Tribute Fallout and a Tribute Doheny. Found the Espada (first version with mini split coils) on reverb used and it cost a small fortune with import taxes and shipping (those guitars are hard to come by here in Europe). It instantly became my favorite guitar off all time. I would still love a Comanche, an S-500 and an ASAT Bluesboy. I'm seriously thinking about making videos about each. I've never made a video on anything but they deserve it and I'm really passionate about guitar again, since I discovered those instruments!
Your videos are great btw!
I love G&L. I currently have the S500 40th Anniversary, 2012 Legacy Special USA, Tribute Bluesboy, & the Sweetwater exclusive Asat Classic Tribute.
nice!
while i could hear a slight difference in the clean sample, it wasn't much at all and they both sound great. picking one would definitely come down to how it feels in the hand. thinner and more satin neck generally appeals to me but that's a taste thing.
Good stuff, thanks. Have you ever checked out a Luxxtone tele? One of my favs.
Great comparison video! I would be interested to see what you think of the Comanche. I have one and love it!
The Rolls Royce of e-guitars!
Whenever I can't decide between two guitars, I just buy both. It saves on buying strings later.
I played a Tribute Tele December 20and loved it . They disappeared in lockdown and when they reappeared in September 21 the one I played weighed nearly 10 lbs which is ridiculous for a Tele . Would still buy one if they weren’t the weight of a coffin . More recently I played a Fullerton Deluxe Legacy Strat which had the pickups replaced by Fender noiseless pickups . The neck is glossy and amazing which I prefer but it would not stay in tune -maybe due to having 8s on it . They are at any level great guitars but resale compared to Fender will be low . I own a Deluxe Strat which has a nice gloss finish on the neck and tbh don’t like satin finish ones -feel it’s a cost cutting measure ?
Landon...very nice...keep your options open...don’t back yourself into a corner picking one...nice job my man!!!
🎸👍
A fun and informative video, as always. Soft Maple? Yes, there is such a thing, but it's only soft compared to the harder maple. There are around 132 different species of maple, but I would think all maple guitar necks are hard enough.
Soft maple sounds similar to cherry wood. Good stuff.
I have an Asat Classic tribute and love it. Great guitar especially the sound
Great video, love my G&L bass and guitars.
Rock on!
I've been wanting a g&l for a while. I got a classic vibe and it felt really...stamped out of a factory.
Get a G&L. You won't regret it.
Great video and lucky man Landon to get your hands on the U.S. made model. I guessed right between them. Though very similar sounding the U.S. one has a slightly more defined tone on the clean channel
Super fortunate to have the opportunity 👍🎸
G&L always looked cool to me but I never really checked them out. Great sounding guitars. Same goes for Music Man. Always wanted to check them out too.
I have a Petrucci Majesty Sig. in the Enchanted Forest Color, its very very nice, the Quality and playability matches the looks, expensive but its like a bass a Yamaha or a Fender J/P Bass are great but the Stingray is a bit of the top shelf of basses that I have played. Worth the price that is more up to you and your choice and situation.
The thing with Music Man is: 1- the build quality is remarkable! 2- The necks are unusual. It's hard to describe, but something you'd have to get used to.
Love your reviews, Landon! As a fellow Canuck, how do you get Sweetwater to deliver to Canada? Their site says they only deliver within the US.
I don't have an official answer to that. It may be special accommodations because I'm an affiliate. I'm not sure
I have a couple of tribute G&Ls and Iprefer them to Fenders. As far as I know the pickups are the same on American made as on tribute so they sound the same. They are just great guitars.
That is my understanding as well.
I look forward to watching this.
Before I do, I am guessing it might come down to the guitarist on whether they must have a fender shape headstock or not?
I could be wrong 😀
If you have not played an ASAT Special you need to. The MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups are amazing!
👍🎸
Would it be possible to replace the G&L pickups with other pickups like the Fender ones? Or does the G&L pickups have different dimensions that would require adjusting the pickguard and rerouting the body?
All brands will fit G&L
I want a Butter Schlotch guitar. Honestly though, I'd take either one and be happy about it.
I just love my Tribute ASAT w/ a Rose Wood fret board. Indonesia model however, so precise. 😊👍🏻🎸
👍🎸
Great video!!! Thanks man. G&L are great guitars
You bet!
I’ve only played one G&L, it was the non-American version but it was great. The necks, to me, feel better on G&L versus Fender.
My Tribute ASAT Deluxe has dual humbuckers. G&L are great but need to look at the naming as you expect Deluxe to mean the same thing on both lines.
I still don't know what most of the names mean :)
Thought that was the battery on my phone, I really like the G&L guitars but like I said before the headstock really bothers me .....it gives me anxiety
trying to age my g&l asat bought it from a pawn shop in 2001, not finding out by the serial number
great intro "hey hows it goin'? alright."
I hope you do a review of the Asat special review. maybe even a comparison of the Asat special vs Asat classic. Your reviews are very good.
Maybe one day!
i've owned a few g&l's. they sound almost identical clean but the deluxe sounds a little tighter, more refined with some gain.
you must have super hearing.. they have the exact same pickups and the pickup is 99% of the sound
@@TedSchoenling yup. i can hear a snail fart at 40 paces.
I’m glad you did this because it cleared up a misunderstanding for me. I’d been given the impression that Tributes had the same pickups AND electronics and now I see it’s just the pickups. Knew the wood and tuners and such were difference, and I never could understand why they wouldn’t have better electronics in the Fullerton line. Was actually holding me back from taking the plunge on a Fullerton Doheny (really like my tribute) but now that I know that isnt true…
The necks of the Fullertons are a different galaxy than the tributes. They are like playing two different guitars
Nice thing is electronics are very easy and simple to replace.
@@thenewmedic if that’s the only thing you’d like better on the Fullerton or what would make it worth it to you, it is a solid option.
Hey Landon, quick question, I know this is almost a year old video so I don’t know if you’ll see this. Would you take the Fullerton Deluxe over the Fender equivalent ?
I've since sold both and bought a Fender American Original Telecaster in Butterscotch blonde
2:25 it's such a cool transition between the two guitars
nice review!
Thank you! Cheers! I've got a full demo coming up for the Fullerton model
So spoiler for some without looking at the headstock the bridge pickup is mounted closer to the neck on the tribute. They both have the same pickups but the tribute uses import wiring. I own a 2,000 which was made in Japan and weight more then my Les Paul
I noticed that after too
I have a ASAT tele with the splittable humbuckers. OK they don't growl much, but it's a fine and good value guitar!
nice!
Every time I hear Swamp Ash, my inner child wants to come out with a good Beavis and Butthead joke. Great video.
Swamp ass 😂 sorry couldn’t resist
yesh!
@@mattdoliver1984 😅
I have a ASAT special, USA from 1995, and it has been my main axe for the last 20 years or so...., and if I was to replace it, it would be with another one..., maybe the tribute...., but these are outstanding guitars....
G&L, if you're reading the comments in Landon's videos.... for your left handed Tributes - please get the bridge in the right spot on the body. The high E string ends up being too close to the edge of the fretboard. No amount of neck wiggling helps.
My 2009 Legacy was corrected by shaving and shimming the neck pocket.
My brand new Bluesboy suffers this too. I may be able to bodge it by putting a nut in between the high e saddle and the side of the ash tray bridge to push all the saddles inwards but I have no idea how that will effect the tone.
Those are the only two lefty G&L tributes I've ever played and owned so I could just be unlucky.
I never had an ASAT, but I had a lefthanded 2019 Tribute S-500 and I currently own a left handed vintage 1984 Skyhawk. The necks never gave me any issues, but the pots are worthless. They are all righty pots wired lefthanded so all the sweep is in the last bit of the range. Amazing sounding guitars but crummy QC for the lefties.
@@nobodys.shapeshifter I was actually going to end my post with "And give us proper lefty pots." ! I had the wiring replaced in my legacy with lefty correct PTB wiring. They did install good quality sealed might mite pots but for righties - at least I have an antilog 1Meg pot if I ever need one.
It was discovered that the factory had put the neck and bridge pickups in the wrong places as well. Correcting these things was worth the expense and effort. I love the Legacy pickups and it's solid instrument. It did come back to me sounding completely different.
Same here, loosened the neck tried a wiggle and pressure,re tightened same as before, ended up putting a spacer between ash tray and bridge saddles.
Wow man, Sweetwater gave you a guitar. Nice
Digging the way you dodged that question
I can present the facts, and what I think about each, but it really shouldn't matter to someone else what I would choose :)
I have an ASAT Tribute, and now is my fav guitar.....(i Have fenders, Gibson, Epi and PRS)
Some people say the MFD pickups are quieter than normal tele pickups, would you agree?
havent's noticed
B sounds a little more articulate to me with my headphones. barely. I think both have the same USA made pickups right?
Same pickups ya
Wow in the blind test the tribute sounded better to me.
Thanks Landon
cheers!
Thanks for doing this comparison Landon... Cliffhanger ending. We are all now waiting with baited-breath and heightened antici.........
😛
I have a ‘21 Sweetwater Exclusive ASAT Classic Custom with the jumbo MFD in the neck. Love the performance in neck and middle position but the bridge MFD is an odd bird. Definitely not the T Style for classic country sounds without a pickup swap.
My Tribute came with the same body as The Deluxe See Through with Grain ?
yes? 😀
These seem to be great. I just bought my first T-style guitar and I went for the Sire Larry Carlton T7. Would be nice to see a video on that. It really seems too good to be true. 🎸
G&L George and Leo. Amazing quality. In my opinion better than Fender. Just wished they retailed at more stores.
nobody sells them around here
@@landonbailey Fortunately I live in Long Beach. I went straight to the Fullerton factory and purchased my asat.
Did you keep one or both ? How often do you play it instead of your fenders/ other guitars ?
I kept neither
I have the USA G&L Tele...and the Indonesian Strat (Sweetwater Demo). ..BOTH with MFDs...both sound fantastic but the USA has better QA...no finish runs for example. The USA has a big C neck...the Tribute is thinner D?. Both keepers!!
nice!
Why didn't you test the ASAT Special? I think that was Leo's preferred design.
I'm not familiar with all the models
@@landonbailey Dude?? Why not...lol! G&L have earnt my respect over the years! P.s Hi from Queensland, Australia!
The ending is hilarious 😂
what ending? 😛
Great video.
👍🎸
Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp! & Baby Blue
you got it :)
I have many Telecaster's ordinarily my preference is for classic traditional Tele tone two low output single coil alnico pu's lipstick in the bridge, although I do have thee with humbucker s one with P90 pu''s. just a few weeks ago I came across a G&L ASAT Classic Tribute for sale. I did not want the MFD pu's. The one I was looking at was called Tribute Classic Limited edition. The wood is Ash, Traditional Tele pickup's, tortoise shell pickgaurd. Here is a link from Musicians Friends of the same exact guitar with all the spec's, these seem harder to find. This is the guitar I just bought for $200. it's a bit heavy, built like a tank and comparable to my American Standard Tele .that I paid 6 times the price bought new maybe ten years ago.
I meant lipstick in the neck not bridge.
Огромная благодарность)
I've got a tribute legacy .. its great.. from what I understand the tributes come with the USA made pickups.. and the same bridge/ trem is both
Sick dude
2:41 I couldn't tell, didn't care which was which, but I preferred the tone of Guitar B much better. Too bad for me it was the more expensive model
They are actually MORE Fender than Fender itself.
Consider Leo was in G&L from its inception through 'til his death. The 'Fender' Company was only functioning with Leo there for a tiny part of its history and Fender Co. is nothing like what it was when Leo was there. All the stuff people like about the Fender Co. brand and its qualities were only there when Leo was at the company. When CBS took over, the company's Quality Control went out-the-window and nearly ended in bankruptcy in the 80's.
Simplest way to tell - Modern G&L guitars have the build-quality and supreme tones of early Fenders. If you are looking for the epitome of "Fenderness" , better get a G&L!
R.I.P. Clarence Leonides Fender.
the neck pickup definitely sounds muddier on the tribute, probably because the neck pickup is higher up in the tribute.
not sure why they did that, other than the chance that they’d be otherwise indistinguishable from each other.
I think that's the first time I noticed that!
@@landonbailey it’s a subtle difference! it also means you have to custom order new pickguards for tribute series guitars since the USA ones won’t fit 😅
The difference, based on all the processing of tone that happens via UA-cam, cellphones, laptops, etc., definitely don't fairly represent the differences. For those who cannot tell the difference, especially in hand, more power to you, you're saving a lot of money.
what's the difference?
I bought a Tribute and it was pretty crappy. Not a big fan of the modern C. Fret work was pretty bad and I ended up just getting a new neck, tuners and pickups. Changed out the controls too. The current Tribute pickups are different than what came on mine so they may be better. An unaticipated project guitar.
That’s a shame, at that point I would’ve returned it. Seems like fender guitars are this way too. You buy a Mexican guitar but it meets you halfway and you have to finish the work to make if playable and decent
They sounded pretty much the same.
I regret selling my american Tele, went to guitar center and all the teles were terrible, its like they dont set them up anymore? Anyways, just got a blond G&L Classic tele from facebook marketplace for $360, its great for the money. Its missing a slight rounded tele sound so may change neck pickup down the road but, fantastic guitar.
nice!
Is tokai better than fender?😀
They sound absolutely identical
It's the same US made pickups in both models, at least that was the case on 2018 tributes
@@baileywatts1304 same pick ups, different wiring. Completely different neck and build.
That headstock could use a refresh imho. Epiphone did it to great affect. It's the main reason I've never had an interest. That may sound shallow but it's truth.
Didn't Epiphone go back to an original design? I don't think G&L would have that option
@@landonbailey I think you're right they did switch back rather than a redesign.
Let it roll Landon, Let it roll! 👍👍🙂🙂
😁
That headstock though 😬
Knobs easier to turn on the USA? 👍🏻👍🏻
ya super easy
The Fullerton models are known for the necks and options if you're ordering one to be built. The Fullerton and tributes necks are not comparable.
the tribute has a buttery look
@@landonbailey they look in the same ballpark but the neck on a Fullerton for me is like holding something I've had my entire life.
@@dingusfuzzklonnkt2755 Interesting. I have a tribute that I love, but I 'm tempted by a US model. Are the fretboard edges rolled? I can't try any since I currently live on an island without any guitar shop...
They look about as close as any premium/affordable versions I've seen.
Guitar A is the asult classic 👌 I have one I can tell the color of the neck headstock and body ... give it away
I’ve had a Tribute Legacy that I regretfully sold and I presently have a Tribute S500 which is going nowhere. No one should compare them to fenders. G&L is a different animal. HIGHLY RECOMMEND G&L. The availability is what kills G&L. If they were side by side with Fenders in every store, the G&L would be much more popular that it is. I’m a fender guy overall but my G&L is on par or above my Fenders across the board with quality control and fit and finish.
I thought guitar B sounded better but I didn’t know which was which.
I really think they are nice but the headstock isn't great. They remind me of one of those giant wood board used to put a pizza in the oven
I got it right, the Deluxe pickups seemed a lot more defined. I thought they were the same pups in each model, but they didn't sound the same. Love that Deluxe Ash. Great guitars!
I think they are the same pickup. The Tribute sounded a bit muffled but would clear up a lot if you lowered them.
@@nobodys.shapeshifter the pots are different but the pups are the same
The real question is, will a Fender neck fit in a G&L body?
No, it won't. Heel shape is different and in a different spot.
@@raytorvalds3699 well dang.
B sounded better. Which one was it?
Damn. Deluxe.
Honey… i need permission to buy something exoensive…

dont know its pickup setup wise but guitar A was bommier and less chimy than B
Badfinger! Nice one
I love that band

Don’t ya just love when the camera farts out before you finished the video?
it's super annoying. I used to run two cameras in case of this, but people complained the choppy editing, so I stopped and then the
Let's face it. They are Fenders in everything but name. Of course, they are great guitars. Will Landon's camera battery be recharged?
Na, completely different playing and sounding guitars from what you'll find in a Fender. If you're looking for a piecing tele with twang and buy an asat classic you will definitely be disappointed. Asat= Jerry Garcia, Tele= Roy Buchanan
