This is the type of upset that gets talked about for years on end. It’s fitting that out of all the MAC teams to be the first to beat a top-5 opponent that Northern Illinois would’ve been the first to do it, usually a pretty solid team year in and year out and occasionally ranked as well.

The refs were consistently setting back NIU ball placement by .5-1 yards
NIU running back clearly had a first down towards the end of the 4th quarter.

As an independent ND owns their rights & has one outlet who is super proprietary over them.

NIU has been getting better every year, gaining more talented recruits. This goes to show how far they've come from being an easy win, to beating the mighty Irish at home on their own field.
One only has to remember that many of the major colleges have the best 5 star recruits and ND is one of them. Big upset by a mid-major with usually no 3, 4, or 5 star recruits.

Northern Illinois outplayed Notre Dame IMO. They out rushed, out passed in terms of yards but had some missed field goals. Congrats.
When you play against Notre Dame, at Notre Dame you have to play against the officials too.
With 5 yards to go for the first down got to luv that #5 NI dude piling on the #5 team in the country around 50-yard line at the 1:05 mark!!
it was a pleasure finally to see the epic game in more than five plays that NIU did. I took the time to read the comments and I see that some say ND has some rights to the game. Once again thanks for the time to post this. I see now how great this game was by INU to beat ND

That was definitely a first down... by a mile, it wasn't even close. That ref just wanted to make NIU kick the field goal with enough time on the clock for ND to get the ball back.

Good job by the defensive coaching staff. They heated Leonard up constantly on 3rd down and even went with zero help over the top. They really trusted their guys could cover on the backend and get pressure up front. Whenever you're seen as the "least talented team", never be afraid to roll the die every so often. Sometimes those are the gambles that pay off the most.

Btw, great game (as always) against my Ducks! No one will ever give credit to the little guys like the should, as all this week I've heard nothing but 'Oregon should've won by at least two scores against the Broncos! How bad is Oregon?', when it should be 'no one really understands the abilities of the Boise State program as a whole. They're far better than they look both on the field and upstairs. There's a reason Mighty Oregon just beat them for the first time in four attempts!'

Being a Notre Dame fan this was disgusting. I never really put much stock into early season games but this was an embarrassment all around. Everyone talked about how great ND would be because the beat a team last week that was barely ranked. Why they ranked ND this high in the first place is beyond me...
The defense got man handled for the most part all game long the sad part is it was by 1 player. They just looked slow, weak and outmatched something you really shouldn't be seeing a team in the MAC doing.
The offense is ran like a damn middle school offense. They don't push the ball down the field at all and the one time they do it is underthrown by 10 yards for an INT. All while the announcers kept talking about how ND took in the QB and 3 WR transfers to push the ball down the field.

NO…another overrated season where they don’t play anyone (except a rebuilding Texas A&M and USC) of top 25 rated teams and is sickening that they play Army, Navy, Air Force (no football scholarships) and lesser teams so they can always get 6+ wins and they go to a school that has pedophile priests.
I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for this.....please advise

Weak schedule doesn't give ou a chance UNLESS NIU becomes ranked and you win in dominating fashion.

This has to be the weirdest Football year of all time or at least for college sports. Crazy. I thought Notre Dame wooped ass only to find out it was the other way around. Id be crazy in saying this but maybe Josh Pate was right, there are no good teams this year and there are only a top 3-4 teams: Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, and whoever that 4 team might be.

if you simply watch the replay you can very very clearly see the knee go down right before the 22, the referee spotted it exactly right, which is actually extremely impressive given he probably could barely see it
@@ChaseRiver2no way. He was just starting to get hit at the 22. And if his knee was down at the 22 the ball would have to be outside the 20. Also he was falling on his back so his knee didn't hit first. And finally most of his body was past the first down marker. Did he crawl there?

First of all, he had to get to the 18, and according to all the replays, the football was past it when he went down. 2nd, he was tackled with very little forward momentum as he got closer down to the ground, and still finished half a yard ahead of the line to gain. Third, and most importantly, it wasn't even close enough to require a measurement according to the crappy spot by the official on the sideline. That's not only bad, that's horrifyingly bad. To have marked him a half yard short when he was about a half yard past it means that the ref missed it by a full yard. Disgusting.

also, they are letting a mid major in as the 12 seed every year, who will play at the 5 seeds home stadium. so you will guaranteed have a 63 to 3 blow out game every single year
