This was the pinnacle of the Billy Joel Band. Liberty DeVitto (drums), Doug Stegmeyer (bass, vocals), Russell Javors (rhythm guitar, vocals), David Brown (lead guitar), David Lebolt (keyboards), Mark Rivera (sax).. Russell Javors's vocal parts with Billy at the breakdown and buildup at 4:55. So good.
Michael Grosvenor No doubt. The fallout between Billy and Liberty is quite a shame, as Chuck Bergi doesn't hold a candle to Lib. I like Mark on sax, but I also thought Richie was quite solid, too. you take this band and add the good pieces Billy has today (Dave Rosenthal, Mike Delguidice, Carl Fischer, and Crystal Taliefero), it's hard to imagine how awesome that band would be.
Agree about Richie. I'd rather have him on sax than Mark Rivera - never cared for him on sax. Other than that, yes this was Billy and the Band in their prime. sad that there's nobody left from the original band.

I’ve always Billy Joel was at his best with this band in this era both performance wise and creatively. He began to decline after The Nylon Curtain although he had many great songs later, he never recaptured the brilliance of this time
For me the highlight of the superb 52nd Street! They absolutely nail it here: a performance for the ages and a truly goosebump-inducing climax. The atmosphere is just electric - it must have been extraordinary to have been in that audience. Even Joel up on stage has that “WTF just happened here?????” look at the end. Fabulous!

Rosalinda's eyes was always my favorite It was about his mother who landed in Cuba because of America immigrant quotas She just passed at 92.We have her to thank for Billy's music, when he was 8 his mother sat him down and demanded he learn to play piano
What an album. The first I listened to all the way through as I was discovering Billy at 15 (in 1988). It was 10 years old but brand new to me (apart from the hit singles). From Zanzibar onwards, there is such a magical quality to the album. Rosalinda's Eyes feels like I'm watching him in a Puerto Rican band, then hanging out with Geo drinking cheap wine and from the final, rapturous moments of this song, we take a swarve, leisurely stroll down 52nd Street. It's such a gorgeous "listen in the dark" album...and wasn't it the first to be made into CD? Genius all round.
Billy Joel is really channeling Bill Medley in the vocals here, especially in the bridge. And when you hear Bikkding the song, you can tell that Billy wrote it with him and Bobby in mind, Great stuff!

I saw him again a couple of years ago at Dodger Stadium and he played it again! I think he likes it as much as we do. Billy has that amazing talent to be able to sound like most tenor male singers. In the early days he used to cover songs in his set impersonating such singers as Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker, Paul Simon, etc. He tells a story about Phil Ramone telling him that many of the vocals on The Nylon Curtain sound like John Lennon. (Laura, Scandinavian Skys, Goodnight Saigon). Billy said that it was unintentional, but at the time he was thinking a lot about Lennon and his genius.
I've seen Billy 4 times, once one his River Of Dreams tour and once in Ohio State stadium with 80,000 people with Elton John (a little after River Of Dreams tour). The last two times were in Philly in '97 and '99. The last time was special because he sang "An Innocent Man" and the stars must've been right and the Philly crowd which always have adored Billy and he them-- he hit the high note in Innocent Man, no stunt singer like he had started using around then when he didn't feel he could hit that note any more-- People were in tears, me included, knowing that there would not be many more people who would hear him do that live. If you can find that ticket stub take a photo to share it with me and whatever else would be cool. I've watched so many BJ videos, interviews, rare performances, etc and I have huge respect for him. Simply his best song and a superb live version. All that was missing were the French horns and strings. Not a huge Joel fan as such but this number and She's Always a Woman are two of my all-time favourite songs. An extreme talent.
Saw him at Wembley, 2019. Bucket list event ticked off especially when he sang Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. What a night! Only regret was he didn’t perform this, because Until the Night is such a complete and remarkable song in so many ways.
This is just another level of performance, the whole band in sync and just by listening you can tell everybody is feeling the song, playing from the heart!
Everyone in that band was outstanding! There never was a dropoff I'd experience between album and live performance.Joel and his band were electrifying.
I forgot how much I loved and appreciated this beautiful song. Terrific how Billy dedicated it to the Righteous Brothers. I would so loved to have been there at Nassau for this.
Bill Medley recorded it himself on an album a couple of years after Billy had done so on his 52nd Street album. If only Billy knew he was going to later record the An Innocent Man album, he might have held it back for that one instead.
I remember loving this song when I was 17 and had no real comprehension of the situation. I loved the imagery and the feelings that it conjured up. I recently bought 52nd Street from ITunes and listening to this song takes me back to the late 90’s when me and my wife at that time struggled to survive with two kids and somehow fit us in between all the work and obligations. Getting home at night and lying in bed talking with her was the only thing that kept me going.
upstatenyphann this band of that era,was an example of musicianship and musical behaviour ,they were all for one and one for all !(never seen them live, though, born in greece,in 1990 :l)

The look of recognition and relief at the end....Joel just knows it just fucking brilliant..what a song..what a performance..what a great band he had then....kills me every time...takes me back many years when first married 40 years ago..I got to moonlighting..decorating on the side..midnight and early hours stuff..I had this shitty little cassette player,a friend of mine lended me 52nd Street and Glass Houses...played them to death thru the long night...great memories..

@@1060michaelg sounds like your a huge BJ fan. I rediscovered Billy about a year ago and was blown away by how many great songs he has. Just about every song is wonderful to listen to. I went to see Joel for the first time on January 25 2020 at MSG and the show was fantastic. Sold out and people there of all ages truly enjoying Evey moment. I would listen to Joel in the 80s and I bought his greatest hits CD in the late 90s. I have all his music at my fingertips through Google play Music (paid app) and have created several playlists of his songs. If you can find that ticket stub take a photo to share it with me and whatever else would be cool. I've watched so many BJ videos, interviews, rare performances, etc and I have huge respect for him. I was planning on seeing him in concert again in Michigan this July but damn Coronavirus has upset everything. Well thanks again Michael and look forward to your BJ memorabilia!
I danced to this as my first dance at our wedding. 40 years ago. It still makes me want to be with my husband. Great words, great sentiment.
Simply his best song and a superb live version. All that was missing were the French horns and strings. Not a huge Joel fan as such but this number and She's Always a Woman are two of my all-time favourite songs. An extreme talent.
based on what you like you probably would be a fan if you listened to more of his stuff.
That part of the song that goes. Im just beginning to live.... Im just beginning to feel.... almost brings me to tears.
cheyboo67 , the chord progression is simply amazing, he is such a great composer!
STEVIE AND BILLY JOEL ARE THE 2 WONDERS THE WORLD EVER HAVE
Everyone in that band was outstanding! There never was a dropoff I'd experience between album and live performance.Joel and his band were electrifying.
I think this is one of his best deep cuts. Very righteous brothers-esque. I wonder why he never did this song live more often?
One of my favorite songs of all time. really great stuff man
One of my favorites ❤
So UNDERRATED...He did this in Philly..I went CRAZY! Very happy he dips in to the deep tracks
Yep
Amazing song. Handsome Billy Bjoel
My Favourite. Love the sax solo too.🇦🇺
I forgot how much I loved and appreciated this beautiful song.
+amazed66 thanks for the info-i have to get the medley version for sure! Thx again
They need to remaster this concert and release it It's that good!
My favourite Billy song and always be in my all time top ten
I remember loving this song when I was 17 and had no real comprehension of the situation. I loved the imagery and the feelings that it conjured up. I recently bought 52nd Street from ITunes and listening to this song takes me back to the late 90’s when me and my wife at that time struggled to survive with two kids and somehow fit us in between all the work and obligations. Getting home at night and lying in bed talking with her was the only thing that kept me going.
We REALLY need a remastered release of the full concert!
Just beautiful
Wow amazing talent all round - top 5 best rock band line up ever
may be his best most consistent album. really on top of his game here. still have the vinyl from the Columbia record and tape club circa 1979
Sweet Jesus, his band was tight as fuck back then...amazing performance, one of my favorite songs by him..god, I love me sone Billy Joel!
i believe the correct term is: His band was "tighter than a bugs ass" back then. amazing performance no doubt.
upstatenyphann this band of that era,was an example of musicianship and musical behaviour ,they were all for one and one for all !(never seen them live, though, born in greece,in 1990 :l)
I once described a friend's a capella version of "Zanzibar" as "So tight, it should be illegal." I knew what I was saying (To sound like that, you must be breaking some laws somewhere), but everyone took it the extremely dirty way.
Nevertheless, this performance is so tight, it should be illegal.
ビリージョエルの曲で、1番好きです。
大好きです。
I wore this album out in my room in the 1970s. Just magnificent songs.
My all time favorite song!
The master of urban epics!
this song is so beautiful
