- The Shirts are a New York-based American punk band, which was formed in 1975. The band’s early existence (1975 to 1981) was closely linked with CBGB, a music club in the Bowery, but it reformed with many of the early members in 2003 and is currently active.
The Shirts had their roots in Brooklyn, where Robert Racioppo and Artie Lamonica had been playing together on and off as early as 1970. Members of the band were gradually added (including lead singer Annie Golden) in the next three years. The band got its name when Racioppo, having just broken up his existing band, asserted his desire to form a new one, and his indifference to its name: "call it anything ... shirts ... pants ... shoes ... The Shirts!"
The original line-up was singer Annie Golden, Artie Lamonica (guitar, vocals), Ron Ardito (guitar, vocals), John Piccolo (keyboards), Bob Racioppo (bass, vocals) and John Criscione (drums , percussion).
The single 'Tell Me your Plans reached #4 in the Dutch Top 40 on November 11, 1978.
This Toppop recording was first broadcast on September 16, 1978.
The Shirts also recorded 'Reduced To A Whisper' for Toppop, which was never broadcast.
The follow up single Laugh And Walk Away' reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40 on December 1, 1979.
Annie Golden now plays the character Norma Romano in the Netflix series 'Orange is The New Black'.

Annie Golden, stars in Orange Is The New Black, as Norma.
In the series, she is partially mute because she has a SEVERE stutter, but she does sing at a prison Christmas play, and, oh, can she sing! It's just beautiful. 🥰

Er was een ander, eerder toppop-clipje waar de zangeres nog heviger op haar kauwgum tekeer ging. Halverwege slikte ze het, duidelijk zichtbaar, per ongeluk door. Prachtig om te zien hoe ze daar de smoor over in had.
Overigens: leuk dat iets dat harmonisch zo spannend in elkaar zit een hitje kon worden. Apart nummer.
Fantastic band, have this single and the superb Shirts album. Saw them in the 70's in Cornwall (St Austell I think) when some guests of theirs on holiday (Sham 69) sang a few numbers also. It was one of my favourite concerts of all time but at 65 years of age, hope I didn't imagine it! If you were there, please let me know.

It didn't irritate me but I did catch me off guard when I saw her chewing and was surprised she was doing that during the track

it's called : "looking cool without trying", might not work in this modern age, but I can tell you every Dutch (and Flemish!) boy thought it was cool in the 1970's :-)
