As someone who is Indian I appreciate you talking about this topic. We really need to talk about South Asian representation a lot more. Disney also did a lot of duds with Raya and the last dragon with its South East Asian representation as well
i watched spin when it aired and it was incredible!! as a first-gen american i geeked over seeing another poc embracing their culture. what you said about new disney is spot on though, i tried recommending it to my friend and she looked at it and thought it was “too childish” :/
I’m a white person and I work as a nanny for an Indian family. The mother is always cooking me these delicious traditional Indian dishes and the baby adores me because, in her mother’s words, “she’s never seen anyone who looks like me.” haha Also I freaking loved this movie. It was surprisingly good for a modern DCOM, which are pretty rare nowadays.
I only found out about Spin by accident, because I saw nobody was talking about it and I saw one poster online. I've been meaning to check it out, but never got around to it, so thanks for reminding me.
I found out about it from Harri's channel a few videos ago, since I don't really keep up with Disney Channel the same way I used to. But I'll definitely give Spin a watch just as well! I love wholesome content so I can't wait to see it. Having seen the trailer and premise, it looks very promising.
My sisters and I absolutely LOVE Spin! We are Arabs but we've always loved seeing South-Asian representation since we were children because we grew up watching Bollywood movies and have a love for their culture. Spin is perfect because not only does it have South Asians working behind the scenes but it has a girl who isn't embarrassed of her culture. Her incorporating her culture to the DJ party was such a nice and fun idea.
Thank you for making this video, as an Indian Pakistani girl I really appreciate it. Most Indian rep in media is non-existent or just horrible, so i'll definitely be checking this movie out.
Wait a minute, people are not aware of this movie? I have seen it and I definitely recommend it. I am not actively on Twitter or anything. But it doesn't surprise me that nobody is talking about this. But I need to rewatch this movie. I have seen POC treat other POCS like trash. I am going to leave before I start ranting. Ps. I am enjoying this content, please continue to share.
Damn I didnt even know this existed either D: Its been so important youve been bringing up nostalgia blindness not just in this video but other disneycember videos, its wild cause plenty of stuff in the past was ass too!
I mean... I dunno, I didn't really see anything of this movie at all when it came to the marketing, especially when compared to their other works starring POC like Turning Red or Encanto. Though that could also be due to me not really using Twitter all that much either for reasons that i think all of you would understand. But even then, I think it was mostly Disney's fault for limiting the majority of the marketing to just one platform, and the platform in question being one that has had a very bad reputation over the years too. Not saying the audience is free of this either, but putting such disproportionate blame on them and accusing them of "failing indian people" is a bit much IMO. But now that you've mentioned it, i think I could go check out what this "Spin" series has to offer.
Don't forget Shanti from The Jungle Book first and second movie. Also Priya from Turning Red too. Honestly I forgot about Shanti until I thought about all the South Asian Indian characters Disney created throughout the years. Like you said, it's SAI representation in very little quantities. I didn't even know about the movie until you shouted it out in your Progenies primere. I watched the trailer + the movie and personally enjoyed it. Spin has a great story, premise, cinematography, emotion, subtle humor, and imo it was beautiful representation for those of South Asian Indian descent.🌻
spin was such an amazing movie, and the time we get a south indian centered movie, it flops. smh. will you be making a vid of the new total drama season?
If you want to see a movie with amazing story and great Afghani rep, go watch the breadwinner. It's a amusing animated movie and on of my favorites of all time. It's a bit heavy though but really sure opening
ayyy me too :))) but anyways yeah, south asian representation is few and in between and not good at all. there’s also very few widely known people in hollywood who are south asian. if you’re looking for some bengali rep (they’re young adult books and are romance) i can offer some.
Im glad you bring up people being racist to other poc and antisemetic shit and i feel its worth pointing out even people within effected groups can push stereotypes and negative ideas about their own groups. Like especially with jewish people spreading anti-Semitism within shows like with south park or with harley quinn and its writers and creators
Could be because I’ve gotten older I saw the promotion for it, but i realized new live action movies don’t appeal to me anymore after a certain era. Sometimes it feels like watching cocomelon 😂.
Apparantly Prince Naveen from Princess and The Frog was meant to be South Asian. His name is sanskrit and his mum wears a saree in the film. However they made him so racially ambiguous that its hard to tell
I'm taking my cousin to see the new Mario movie in April my sister is taking his sisters to see little mermaid in may she asked if I wanted to come with I said no I don't really like live action movie I prefer Animation
if you could watch spin, please do. give this movie a chance cause it could really used the love and attention. it's on disney plus!
Obsessed with it
As someone who is Indian I appreciate you talking about this topic. We really need to talk about South Asian representation a lot more. Disney also did a lot of duds with Raya and the last dragon with its South East Asian representation as well
Raya and the last dragon had such gorgeous animation but i think it would've worked better as a series instead of a movie
Raya is actually South East asian not South
Disney announced last week we’re getting an Indian princess musical! With Bend it Like Beckham’s Gurinder Chadha to direct and produce!
Raya is not south asian i thought
@@cluelesssubliminal Sorry about that ill edit that
I'm Indian and even I personally didn't hear of this movie till this video. Thanks for talking about it!

I didn't know spin existed until this video lol...
I'd never even heard of this movie before now.
I don't think I've ever heard of it, tho... I don't watch much of Disney anyway.
I’m glad to say I was one of those people who watched this movie when it came out, and I’m still an avid follower of the lead actress (avantika)
If you want to see a movie with amazing story and great Afghani rep, go watch the breadwinner. It's a amusing animated movie and on of my favorites of all time. It's a bit heavy though but really sure opening
oh i’ve heard of that!
im bengali but why am i not surprised 😞😞
ayyy me too :)))

Nah Harri, I was hype for Spin! It's really good. My sister and I watched it on the premiere and we liked it a lot.
There are Bollywood films made and distributed by Disney. I watched a cool film named Zokkomon on Netflix, which is one of them.
Thanks for telling us about this film! I'll watch it over my break
Yes !!!!! Spin was amazing and very cute great cast !
This movie is so underrated and it's so good idk why nobody talks about it

Could be because I’ve gotten older I saw the promotion for it, but i realized new live action movies don’t appeal to me anymore after a certain era. Sometimes it feels like watching cocomelon 😂.
