Thank u for this video!!! People think antisemitism began and ended with the holocaust which is NOT true. That’s like saying racism started and ended with slavery. It’s insidious and dangerous and thank u so much for ur words !
thank you for using your voice & platform to speak on this. i'm Jewish and extremely concerned with the very REAL antisemitism that's rising at an alarming rate. those fandom type responses tell us we're "overreacting" to the point of holocaust DENIAL. yes, many villains (disney, fairytales, even literature) are based off Jewish caricatures/stereotypes. it's made me so insecure about my appearance, such as my curly hair. representation has gotten better, though i hope we can see more for Jewish children. the comparisons you made with mutual hatred towards the Black and Jewish communities are valid - both racism and antisemitism have roots in white supremacy. aka it was no shock that ye is both racist AND anti semitic. it's sad that it took the bigotry of a celebrity to shed light on this issue, but now more than ever, we need allies to show themselves and stand with us.
@@TwelveTribesForever no they are not. this shows me you did not read my comment and now you want to gaslight ME. anti blackness has reared its ugly head as a result of ye's actions, and yes, there is anti blackness in the jewish community (which hurts Black Jews the most). but we are not pinning the entirety of antisemitism on a particular community. don't know why you're bringing the talmud into this. we literally just want people to be allies and not demonize us. that's it.
@@TwelveTribesForever you are gaslighting me by saying jewish people are gaslighting by speaking up about the hatred they face. i did not say ye caused antiblackness -- people are using his actions as a reason to be antiblack, which helps no one, especially not Black Jews. as stated, i'm not talking about the talmud. it seems you're using that to justify jew-hatred. i see you're defending ye, so you seem to have no understanding of the concepts discussed in this video, so i do not know why you are in this comment section. i hope you come to realize that jewish people aren't your enemies. white supremacy is. i'm ending this conversation here. good night.
I apologize for the Owl House fandom's behavior. To deny that a piece of media has not-so-great parts is anti-intellectual and childish. I am a fan of the show, but we do need to analyze it a bit more.
@@DEADLYFACED I hate it, as well. The show is fantastic, but the fans are a bit too sensitive. They get overly upset at ships and headcanons, but when something worthy of criticism happens, they shut their brains off. Not only that, but they've flanderized amazing characters like Amity to "gay panic" (fun fact! the term "gay panic" comes from "gay panic laws" which is a legal defense that essentially makes it legal to murder gay people).
@@drowsy7921 I love The Owl House as well. Right now, I’m just a little frustrated that some people think there’s antisemitism in it. The show has great representation and great themes of friendship and acceptance.
@@christopherrichards2350 I do understand. People's criticism of the show has been valid, in my opinion. Some proof is a bit of a stretch (how dare Belos be a villain???) but that concept art was rather suspicious. A lot of shows with queer rep has had bad rep for other groups, however. It's because of the whitewashing of queer history. I still adore the show, but we must think critically about the things we love.
9:45 This!!! I've been in situations before where people try to argue that "You shouldn't let politics get in the way of friendships" and all that but when someone literally disagrees with my existence or the existence of my loved ones then I'm sorry but that's not just "politics". I used to be friends with this one family, only for the mother to say hateful things about (non-white) immigrants. Since I am white, she probably thought I would agree, except for the fact that I am the granddaughter of a middle Eastern immigrant! Their family was also discriminatory towards Jewish people, when some of my closest family members are Jewish! It's crazy how people will just say whatever nonsense they think just because they assume that since you look like them, you'll agree with them.
People like to excuse the hooked-nose villain trope by saying “Its not antisemitic because not all Jews have hooked noses”. While it’s true that not all Jews have this feature, there are still a lot of Jews who do, and they shouldn’t have to feel embarrassed about it. Also, many non-Jews have that nose type, too.
It honestly scares me how much antisemitism was lurking, especially in the black community, for all this time. Honestly, it amazes me that it still happens. Like... I've always felt more kinship with the Jewish community, tbh. We were both ethnically cleansed multiple times, both targeted by evil groups like the KKK, both denied jobs and housing for a while... I don't feel mad that they managed to (mostly) recover and we didn't because I know we had a lot more systematic challenges to overcome, but I never saw them as the enemy or the main perpetrator of those ills of society. I feel like tearing us apart and making us see our brothers and sisters as enemies is what the fat cats on top want. I'm not about to give it to them. Jewish people are not villains; they're people.
@@antonioalford4403 Yeah, we should bring them back, but just stop giving them Those Appearances that allow them to be easily coded one way or the other. It's literally as easy as giving a nose job to some of them. Also has there been a single Disney villain with blonde hair? I have trouble remembering if so.
I think that's what people who bitch and moan about how much they hate the newer villains are missing. As much as I enjoy villains like Captain Hook, Jafar, Hades, and even Mother Gothel, there is still a lot of gross "othering" in the way those characters are designed and characterized, and I think a lot of people underestimate how that impacts real people and the way they think. There's value in showing villains that teach that you can't always judge a book by its cover.
And why include a person they hate even in a racist cartoon? If they don't like them so much they should just not include them, it makes me very uncomfortable to think that Disney characters were based on Jews because it reminds me of how horrible they are to Jews and how they constantly victimize themselves. They don't even deserve an offensive cartoon, better to include minorities that are nice
I immediately ran to this video. harriyana thanks so much for this. I'm a black Jew that's subscribed to your channel and watched your videos for a while and this warms my heart (I'll post my thoughts on this after watching).
Jewish features are one of the most beautiful ive seen and looking back on these character designs im so irritated that theyre accociated with so much negativity. Even some naiive artists may make villians with these same features and keep the loop going of villianizing a group of peoples features simply because "Oh boohoo the white man was ignorant, give him a chance." Hopefully we can come together and break that loop :)
Emperor Belos on The Owl House is both frightening realistic and fantasy. He’s pretty much the representation of a religious fundamentalist and a colonizer. There’s people in the real world who are just like Belos
He's not a colonizer. He's a crusader. People have been throwing that word around without realizing the meaning of it or because it sounds trendy. Belos didn't establish a colony. He created a movement and a way of thinking throughout the Boiling Isles the same way Christianity did, through fear, manipulation, and violence. The Boiling Isles were already colonized when he arrived as shown in Elsewhere and Elsewhen and he was too young to even establish the town of Gravesfield to be a colonizer. He's not even from there if the lore is to be believed, he and his brother just stumbled upon the town and settled down.
Thanks so much for making this video 💜💜 And yeah luckily in the past few years, Disney has made some more "heroic" Jewish characters, like Princess Rebecca in Elena of Avalor (voiced by Cuban Jewish actress Jamie Lynn Sigler!). Also live-action Prince Eric in the new Little Mermaid with Halle Bailey (which I am so so pumped to see her in!) will be played by a Jewish actor, Jonah Hauer King
Germans were not any more antisemitic than the rest of Europe at that point in history, so at least rest easy knowing it's not like the brain baby of Nazis trying to lull their Superior Hellspawn to sleep or something EDIT: Nvm it was literally used as propaganda by the Nazis 🤡 Not created by them, but still... If you're bad enough that the Nazis use you as propaganda, you may as well be
@@drawingwinxstyle9193 I still want to give movies like Strange World a chance because it reminds me of classic Disney movies like Atlantis The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet. I also love Turning Red, it’s my favorite movie of 2022
TOH fans in general have a really horrible tendency to ignore or get pissy with people criticizing it's representation. First it was black fans talking about the representation of black people, then it was Jewish fans talking about antisemitism in the show And I get why people may get really defensive of the show, especially because it has good queer rep, which is honestly pretty rare. But good rep for LGBTQ individuals doesn't mean it's free from any criticism for its representation of other minorities (as a lesbian) And to any (fellow) TOH fans: Trust me when I say this, most of the people pointing out racism and antisemitism in the show don't want you to hate it or stop liking it. In fact, a large portion of them are fans themselves. They just want you to be aware of the problems with the show and to be critical of it
@@antonioalford4403 nothing is wrong with the representation. It’s just that the original concept art of Eda’s owl beast form that was shown in this video was kind of sensitive. I’m glad it wasn’t used in the show and they changed it. The Owl House is a good show and the story and the characters are amazing. I’m against racism and antisemitism.
Imo one of the best ways you can show love to a show is not only pointing out what you like about it, but also not being afraid to share criticisms. Some people just wanna live in a bubble where everything they like is morally perfect Ig lol.
I’m not Jewish, so I’ll never be able to fully understand the full extent of the pain the community has experienced but I do know that from the outside it’s a lot and I wish people would just leave them alone, they’ve done nothing to deserve any of the hate they receive.
I think that a lot of antisemitism and other forms of bigotry find its way into popular media via ignorance. People often don't realize that something is offensive because they've seen it be done before many times. Obviously some people are malicious, but in the modern age I think a lot of it comes from ignorance. Given this, I think that videos like this that are informative as to why a certain portrayals or statements might be hurtful are a good way to bring it to more people's attention. I haven't watched your channel very long, but it has definitely taught me some things that I had never considered before.
I was aware of the anti-semitism in Tangled (and other Disney cartoons), but daaaang! I didn't know the fandom was that way too! Thanks for releasing this. It really opened up my eyes. I didn't know about The Owl House being that way and it saddens me that the fandom is that way too. :(
The owl house fandom (especially on twitter) is pretty bad lol. It almost makes me embarrassed to love the show as much as I do because I don't wanna be associated with them :(.
After finding out that Grunkle Stan was Jewish, his money-hungry scamming habits rubbed me the wrong way. Eda always felt like a similar character to me, and now that I've seen that concept art... yikes. Thanks for reminding me of my blind spots.
I am a big fan of both shows, but I also felt a bit off after finding out Grunkle Stan used to be Jewish (according to Alex Hirsh, Stan is an atheist who was raised Jewish, but then again there is more than one way to be Jewish)
@@drowsy7921 I didn’t know Grunkle Stan was an atheist. I’m an atheist as well but please understand this. I’m not against all religious people, I’m only against religious fundamentalists or what you call religious zealots.
Is it even possible to separate the stereotypical witches from antisemitism? Second hand antisemitism is so annoying. Witch characters are based on fairy tale witches, which are based on antisemitic traits. The creator of a character usually isn't antisemitic, but the character can be called antisemitic. Just like how most people don't know Cabal is a jewish term and just use it for any hidden shady organization. So wtf do you do.
@@christopherrichards2350 I just learned from this video that jews were compared to birds so Eda has antisemitic roots. And the kids are highschool harry potter expys. It's better than harry potter, but the entire school setting is a Hogwarts expy that Disney wanted and Dana had to give. I'm talking about actual stereotypic witches that fly around on brooms and eat children in every medieval fairy tale. Even though they have origins in alewives and pre-christian village healers they are so jew-coded you can't talk the subject without running into antisemitism
@@christopherrichards2350 It's literally one of my top 5 favorite shows. I had no idea there was anything problematic with the show until Harriyanna brought it up. And I grew up with harry potter so the hogwarts parodies in Owl House (like the golden snitch) are funny. Doesn't change it's a HP parody. It's even more annoying when I heard Dana didn't want to go in that direction, but Disney wanted that. But on the other hand we got a lot of really good things from it, the setting fit really well into the show. They took a cliche setting and did their own twists to it, which is always great to see.
@@HotDogTimeMachine385 The Owl House is pretty much my comfort show because I love the diversity and world building. I also love the LGBT and neurodivergence representation of this show. Luz and Eda are my favorite characters.
I noticed a weird trend of behind the scenes nonsense in animation. Remember Kipo and the age of Wonderbeasts? I thought she was biracial do to her mom being Korean and her dad being black. Except apparently her dad is not her biological father for very stupid and convoluted reasons explained by the creator. Then there is The Ghost and Molly McGee. Molly was originally going to be black but the creators said they wanted her race to match her voice actress. In the show, she is half Thai and half white. On one hand, it is much better than Raya and the Last Dragon as a portrayal of a South East Asian. On the other, did that mean they could not find a black voice actress? Now the Owl House, I really like that show, which is why it hurts to know about this. Especially because that show helped many young queer people feel seen. I know that from James Somerton's video on the Owl House and the comments on it. Eda's love interest, Raine Whispers, is an enby and so is their voice actor who said they see Raine as transmasculine. That character was validating to many. It feels like every positive step in one area has two or more steps backward in another.
"Except apparently her dad is not her biological father" What? I can't find anything about that anywhere. Nothing on google and the wiki doesn't mention anything about it either.
@@jacqueshardin4601 Ok, I found the issue. Kipo was written and designed to be korean but later in the production they made her dad black, and it was too late to redesign her to be darker. THAT'S IT The creator felt like "she isn't designed to be half black so i don't feel comfortable in calling her half black". And the test tube baby thing isn't even in the show so who cares. He tried overcorrecting, but said it in a dumb and confusing way so people think he's racist. Yeah, this checks out.
Steven Universe is a great example of this with how they gave the Diamond Authority redemption despite them colonizing planets, creating slaves and killing gems that didn't fit their perfectionist ideals ON TOP of the drawing found in the SU art book where they had a gem with exaggerated black features and disrespectful words associated with her
Hey, I really appreciate this video, as Jews we often find it hard to fight for ourselves, we have the tendency to “go along with the joke” and double down on the antisemitism in fear of being outcast and attacked. I have been kicked out of my garden, called a natzi and asked to see my horns (the last of which was the least atrocious because at least it came from a sense of misinformed curiosity and not hatred but I digress). It is nice to have someone standing up against antisemitism especially when it’s not “popular” like fighting homophobia and racism (not to say those aren’t worthy cases to fight for, but that humans generally fight for whatever is (forgot the word but essentially social rewarded) or trendy, and acting despite or against that, even if insensitivised by a peak of online attention, shows virtue of character and should be recognized.) I really just wanted to put a small comment on something you said earlier in the video, heck I’m only about 5 minutes into the video and already wrote what feels like a full essay. I guess that just goes to show how little we get to express ourselves. At this point I’m just thinking out loud through this comment and I’m sure I’m also projecting a lot from other thoughts conversations and videos I’ve watched today but I’d love to further discuss this be it in the comments or on a live conversation but anyway I’ll leave the initial comment I intended to make and some other notes on my experience and the video on the edited part of this comment or on a secondary reply comment, I’ll decide when I finish the video lol
Ok wow, just finished watching and I have a lot more notes than expected, most stemming from the thing I was originally intending to comment on, a line about how some of your audience is right leaning and that you don’t want to associate with that. Now I’ve interacted and heard from all sides of the political spectrum from the alt right to the hard left and what I found was that both sides generally want the same thing but disagree on how to get there. Most people on the right agree that we must fight racism but might disagree on how we go about that, believing that say sensitivity training in collages and race swapping in movies may push segregation between races in an over correction of the past, And most people on the left would agree that freedom of speech is important but might disagree with where that may balance with say freedom of self expression with preferred pronouns and such. Obviously there are outliers but I’d put the “kill all men” and the “keep the bloodline pure” types in their own category and leave them to die alone, trapped in their own echo chambers for all I care. Because those people have lost themselves to the echo chamber, they are a cautionary tale of what happens when you surround yourself with likeminded people and don’t let other opinions in. Both sides are trying to make the world a better place and only together can we achieve that, but the media both new and old constantly tries to demonize the other side and make them out to be evil or insane and we all to often just blindly follow that and it’s fucking tragic. We need to let people with differing beliefs in especially if you disagree with them cause that’s the only way to move forward and never lose sight of the humanity of others. Unless they are literal nazis or terrible in which case fuck yeah, stay the hell away from those people😂 I somewhat agree with this point though not the sentiment it holds necessarily. To me this looks more like an apathy to the cries of Jews over an antisemitic hate towards them, much like the way it currently kisses up to the Chinese government despite the atrocities it continues to commit, but I’ll get more into that in the more Jewish and antisemitic sections. Sorry again for rambling but it’s nice to get the chance to let my thoughts out on the table 😅 Some additional notes on the topic that didn’t naturally flow with the rest: -casual antisemitism is stereotypically a leftist trait, do with that as you will, -the line I wrote about listening and connecting with others who don’t agree with you unless they’re literally a nazi/terrorist seems like a slippery slope, like yeah anyone unless they are crazy and too far gone, like where do you draw the line, what about people who are seemingly bigoted or anti man? Personally I’d draw the line at as long as they don’t physically intend to hurt/kill/cancel anyone because of their beliefs and are open to talking I would give them at least a level of human respect and decency to treat them like any other (in accordance to their actions and not there beliefs) but that’s just me. -you do make the point that hanging around the wrong crowds can be dangerous and as a white man at his physical prime I know that this part may hit different for us but just make sure you’re critical and aware of your assessments in these statements so that you don’t end up like one of them white folks who’ll avoid black or Hispanic communities cause “ya don’t want to be hanging around the wrong crowds”. - lastly I wanted to let you know that this is the most critical point I have with what you said and I only bring it up because I can see that you are a smart person who seems to want to make the world a better place, but discriminating and ignoring nearly 50% of the world because of slightly differing world views is never a good idea, tempting as it may be, and yeah some of us are a bit crazy but they’re not all Kanye and if you give them a chance you might learn something:)
I’m realizing now that this comment has basically enough content to make a full video response out of, what do you think should I make it? Should I just just shut up? Let me know. (Also I’m just assuming that these paragraphs upon paragraphs of thoughts are ok since a. They’re helping your algorithm and b. You can just not read them if you disagree or don’t care, but if you want me to stop just let me know.) I’m first gonna rewatch the vid once more to organize my thoughts and notes on the more Jewish stuff for the next and hopefully final section of my reply which should be a bit shorter and talk a bit more about my experience with antisemitism and how things like Walt Disney and others effect me as a Jew.
Fuck! I just spent the last two and a half hours writing the final section about Jewish life, antisemitism in media and practice, and how you yes actually you as an individual can save literal thousands of lives just by understanding the problem and then just as I was selecting all to copy it so I can try again if something goes wrong, I press the M button with the bottom of my thumb and all I’m left with is a fucking MMMM!
The short version is this: I was born Jewish to a modern orthodox ashkenazi family in the states and made Aliyah (moving to Israel) when I was three. And over the years, being called a “dirty Jew” asked to see my horns (based on old anti Jewish myth that Jews have horns), and kicked out of places simply for being a Jew. As a kid I remember the first white lie I told is that “just because I’m Jewish does not mean I don’t know karate” to defend myself from some bullies, but that generally all they ever were, bullies. And yeah, bullies suck, they can make your life a living hell, but the thing about bullies is that they’ll hurt you not because you’re flawed, not because there’s something wrong with you, but because something is wrong with them and because of that, because you don’t hold the problem, then they’ll find any reason to hurt you. Until we get rid of all psychopathy, insecurity, and fear of the other from the world, we’re all gonna have to deal with the shit that comes with discrimination. Just be thankful you’re not ugly, I was an ugly kid and I had ugly friends, and I’ve got to say, ugly people have it the worst out of all of us, they’re profiled as creeps and always step on eggshells, they are often seen as lesser than, get less job opportunities at work regardless of ability and are often seen as undesirable by potential partners. The world is built unfair and you can there fight on despite that or drown in self pity. Yeah it suck when someone calls you a slur or catcalls you unprompted or does a micro aggression but those people are bullies and bullies deserve nothing more than your pity. It sucks, but hey, Elon musk is one of the ugliest people I know, and hes one of the most successful people in the world. So is Walt Disney antisemitic? Probably. But I don’t really give a shit. Dealing with casual antisemitism and discrimination is a part of life, some people are just too weak for love and I’m afraid that isn’t gonna change any time soon. (Bad transition:) BUT and this is a Big But. Like the kind of but that would make Kim Kardashian jealous, so listen carefully, just because casual antisemitism get to us does not mean antisemitism is harmless. And does not mean that you’re hands aren’t clean from blood in this, but this is all in your control. There are people, masses of terrorists who want to wipe us off the map. Nazi germany was not the first time we were tried to be eradicated for the sole crime of existing and it is far from the last. We get so many antisemitic terror attacks that I had to turn off the app we have to track them for safety in Israel cause it was spamming my phone. I’ve been on busses mere hours before they blew up, I’ve seen kindergartens and holy places I knew burned to the ground in the name of antisemitism, I have family who have lost their friends to terrorists all just for being a Jew. It doesn’t bother me when some dead guy didn’t like us or some art piece misrepresents us, but when Hollywood celebrities ignorantly go on record supporting Palestine and us tax dollars go to literal terror organizations who kill their own people and seek to destroy all Jews in a genocide of mass prepositions. That fucking bothers me because the more money and support that they get the more people I know will die and the less we can do to defend ourselves. The fact of the matter is we can debate about the validity all you want, trust me I’ve been down that road and I can take you down there with me, but if you really want to be an ally to the Jews, you have to understand that in their own words the Palestinians will not stop until they push us down to drown into the ocean, and replace by a tyrannical state where the people are expendable, the women are objects and homosexuality is punishable by death. We are framed by antisemitic media as big strong powerful oppressors because in the seventy or so years as a country we built a strong democracy with and strong moral military to defend itself. Kids here are safe to go out late at night and play in the streets and I once had to sleep in a homeless shelter for a night (long story) and found it was surprisingly chill, the food was decent, we played settlers and the people in charge helped the homeless actually get back up on their feet and get their lives together. Israel is a beautiful strong country and these terrorists are trying to take it from us and the world is buying it cause the leaders are afraid and the masses don’t know what they’re supporting, they only see the underdog I mean look at them they’ve got nothing, their government treats them like trash keeping everything to themselves, spending charity money for the poor on weapons, and feeds the people nothing but lies about how things will all be better once the Jews are all gone. It’s only human nature to stand up for the underdog and they’ve been praying on that nature for years to oppress there own people and kill ours. But you, with your voice, your platform, you can spread awareness and help thousands, most pro Palestinians are good people who don’t realize the atrocities they support, and without their support the terrorists hold no power. This did not end up being short, sorry, I got a bit emotional though perhaps not as emotional as I should have, my last draft was far more emotional and I think it got the point across but I digress. Thank you for tolerating my rants, I know they at this point have little to do with your video but I just really needed to let that out and this was the platform it came out in, if you’re still here and you have questions disagreements or otherwise want to know more, I’m here to chat, I’m here;) thx
It's really disappointing that for a show that's supposed to be more progressive had that as concept art for one of the characters. It's really scary just how much racism and anti semitism is engraved in our media but we tend to look more into the race factor (primarily black). If you catch yourself disagreeing with a jewish person when it comes to anti semitism, either educate yourself or shut up. And if you see a jewish person disagreeing with another jewish person, keep your ass out of it unless you're jewish
Hirohito loved Disney as well. Mickey Mouse specifically. That literally doesn't mean anything because the vast majority of people who watched Snow White and Mickey Mouse loved them. Kim-il-sung loved Godzilla and Toho kaiju movies to the point that he kidnapped a director and his wife and made him make a kaiju propaganda film for N. Korea(Pulgasari). That's not Godzilla's fault. In fact, Godzilla opposes everything that the North Korean regime stands for.
Thank you for this video. I was recently informed about the antisemitism in Tangled and I honestly didn't know what that person was talking about at first. This video was very educational, though, and helped me to understand and better negotiate my own relationship to the movie. The part I found most helpful was your thoughts on Captain Hook and your personal opinion about his character, and I've found that I feel the same way. Tangled is a very important film to me as an adult survivor of child abuse, and I relate a lot to Rapunzel. But I have to acknowledge the extremely antisemitic portrayal of Mother Gothel. That shit is NOT okay. Especially because she was originally supposed to be white! Why didn't they keep her white??? (Like, I know *why*, but why? You know? What the hell, Disney?)
I couldn't even think that if there are villains in books and movies, they are usually based on Jews and that the whole antagonistic trope is anti-Semitic. I want to apologize for being so blind and that I have supported anti-Semitism indirectly and unconsciously.
Playing persona 4 and am disgusted by the blatant and unrepentant anti semitism reflected in the persona designs. Didn’t notice it in p5, but 4? I want to GAG. Eeew.
This video is very informative. I have heard for years that Disney is anti-Semitic but I could never tell why. We are not educated on what is antisemitism unless it is in the extreme (I figured if I wasn't Eric Cartman then I was good). I now see that what people are talking about (I guess the way some of these characters are portrayed and designed are kind of like how people draw black people with big lips and stereotypical behaviors). As someone who wants to create in the future I will keep these things in mind.
One thing that rubs me the wrong way is taking one of Fabien's artworks and saying "This was Eda's original form". Characters can go through hundreds of iterations. The way you said it makes it sound like first Eda was this racist caricature, but then she was a human, which sounds so much worse than saying one of the artworks from one of the concept artists is this abomination. Fandom has such a habit of not understanding how concept art or the creative process works. And now it looks like I am defending antisemitism... great.
This creature "Jewish bird" is actually a harpy with the face of Baba Yaga (Creatures from Slavic myths), at least as far as I understand the appearance and mythology of the Slavs :V Although from the perspective of people from the USA and it is known what happened in my country (Poland), this look and face are not very well associated
Seriously, the context of mythology was not about slandering the Jews (Because the Slavs were pagans and the Christians stuck and you know what happened over the years), baba yaga got hit the hardest because they changed her to an evil witch (yes, the image of witches in pop culture is actually a modified baba jaga), while there is her cousin (From Kashubian mythology), who also has a brother (He performs a somewhat similar function to Leszyn), unfortunately, the downside is that the image of baba yaga is used as an attack on Jews (Disney) and it hurts so much, because even a character from this mythology does not deserve to be become anti-Jewish (Because, as I mentioned, Slavic mythology had little to do with attacks on Jews, at least as far as i know) Disney, thank you so much for destroying the mythology of the areas where I was born to promote anti-group...
Also, Hey Alma might not always have the best takes tho, a while ago they platformed a non jewish person who said she can be jewish without formally converting or even believing in god through the ways if judaism so be cautious😅 Judaism is an ethno-religion. The connection of one to ones jewhood is can be through ethnisity(AKA liniage), religious belief or both. If someone have neither, there is no reason for them to claim jewishness.
Lots of Jews who were born into Judaism and still practice Jewish traditions don’t believe in God. It’s kind of antisemitic to gatekeep our community like that.
@@mv9653 are you jewish to speak for us? She can drop her "judaism" like nothing, I can't. My shared history is not nothing, my practices and traditions are not nothing. The knowledge that I have been taught about my people is not nothing. Same as it's not okay to just say you're a native american and just pick and choose whatever you associate with a specific tribe to pracrice and claim. It's a closed practice and if the community didn't accept you - you're not a part of it. It's a protective measure.
@@FlyFox_Art Okay that still doesn’t negate the fact you do not have to believe in G-D to be a Jew. Jews by choice do not have to believe in G-D, same as any other Jew. hi, fellow white person here, and while I don't agree with everything you say on your channel, I do appreciate you for talking about issues with cartoons and the entertainment industry that no one else seems to talk about; as a fellow trans queer person and cartoon enthusiast, I notice some casual homophobia and transphobia in a lot of cartoons, (granted most of it being from older cartoons but that doesn't magically mean it was ever ok ) and no one ever seems to talk about it, so its great that we have a member of the community who's not afraid to talk about certain things because its so common for others in the toon community to silence others who bring up stuff like this, keep it up!

Come on. Grimm's Fairy Tales are not rooted in antisemitism. Where did you get that idea from? It would be nice if you could provide even one single reliable source for that claim.
People are relatively quiet when the US government funds fascist terrorists in other countries, so the outrage over antisemitism feels a little hollow. Not defending him, just noticing.
We must run in different circles but in my experience, people are very vocal about both issues. (Also, if this is about Israel, Israel is actually super antisemitic toward the Jewish diaspora so the issues are absolutely related.)

i think it's nuts that even with all their literal n*zi history, disney channel has more jewish representation than most children's media (save for pbs kids). although since ariel martin, jason maybaum, milo manheim, and ava kolker (disney's recent jewish stars) haven't been in disney stuff lately it has kind of stopped. the bar/bat mitzvah episodes in the last few years were really special but i still need my jewish main character!!! cmon. also yes heyalma is so good!!! kveller as well, but that's actually a parenting site i'm pretty sure? idk.

Yes, and unfortunately antiblackness within the Jewish community.
There more anti blackness in the Jewish community

I apologize for the Owl House fandom's behavior. To deny that a piece of media has not-so-great parts is anti-intellectual and childish. I am a fan of the show, but we do need to analyze it a bit more.
I’m a fan of The Owl House and I hate antisemitism
@@drowsy7921 you’re right
9:45 This!!!
Jewish people are not villains; they're people.
to quote that one lesbian (if I remember correctly) Jewish comedian. “You’re not white-white we’re hated either way.”
Stop attacking blk people
And folks wonder why we don't see many traditional Disney Villains anymore.
Honestly!!!! Im so sick of the misinformation campaigns! They need to end! There's noting wrong with genuinely being kind!!
Absolutely 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
I knew there was a reason Evil Queen and Mother Gothel just gave off the same vibes.

Jewish features are one of the most beautiful ive seen and looking back on these character designs im so irritated that theyre accociated with so much negativity.
Even some naiive artists may make villians with these same features and keep the loop going of villianizing a group of peoples features simply because "Oh boohoo the white man was ignorant, give him a chance."
Hopefully we can come together and break that loop :)
Thank you for making this video. To me, a Jewish person, your commentary is VERY much appreciated.

TOH fans in general have a really horrible tendency to ignore or get pissy with people criticizing it's representation. First it was black fans talking about the representation of black people, then it was Jewish fans talking about antisemitism in the show
And I get why people may get really defensive of the show, especially because it has good queer rep, which is honestly pretty rare. But good rep for LGBTQ individuals doesn't mean it's free from any criticism for its representation of other minorities (as a lesbian)
And to any (fellow) TOH fans: Trust me when I say this, most of the people pointing out racism and antisemitism in the show don't want you to hate it or stop liking it. In fact, a large portion of them are fans themselves. They just want you to be aware of the problems with the show and to be critical of it
I’m a fan of The Owl House and I understand it has its issues in representation.
They're spineless as heck

What do you think about the animated series The Owl House?
@@christopherrichards2350 I just learned from this video that jews were compared to birds so Eda has antisemitic roots. And the kids are highschool harry potter expys. It's better than harry potter, but the entire school setting is a Hogwarts expy that Disney wanted and Dana had to give.
I'm talking about actual stereotypic witches that fly around on brooms and eat children in every medieval fairy tale. Even though they have origins in alewives and pre-christian village healers they are so jew-coded you can't talk the subject without running into antisemitism
@@HotDogTimeMachine385 Do you hate The Owl House in general though? I’m just asking. I’m a big fan of that show and I do hate antisemitism
@@antonioalford4403 Well, that is good to hear. And that show does a fair bit better portraying Jewish people as well, or so I have heard.

@@HotDogTimeMachine385 It was a thing I found out from a video by the channel Too Many Crowns. It was a while ago, so maybe I am missing a few things.
@@jacqueshardin4601 Ok, I found the issue. Kipo was written and designed to be korean but later in the production they made her dad black, and it was too late to redesign her to be darker. THAT'S IT
The creator felt like "she isn't designed to be half black so i don't feel comfortable in calling her half black".
It is nice to have someone standing up against antisemitism especially when it’s not “popular” like fighting homophobia and racism (not to say those aren’t worthy cases to fight for, but that humans generally fight for whatever is (forgot the word but essentially social rewarded) or trendy, and acting despite or against that, even if insensitivised by a peak of online attention, shows virtue of character and should be recognized.)
I really just wanted to put a small comment on something you said earlier in the video, heck I’m only about 5 minutes into the video and already wrote what feels like a full essay.
Most people on the right agree that we must fight racism but might disagree on how we go about that, believing that say sensitivity training in collages and race swapping in movies may push segregation between races in an over correction of the past,
And most people on the left would agree that freedom of speech is important but might disagree with where that may balance with say freedom of self expression with preferred pronouns and such.
Sorry again for rambling but it’s nice to get the chance to let my thoughts out on the table 😅
Some additional notes on the topic that didn’t naturally flow with the rest:
-casual antisemitism is stereotypically a leftist trait, do with that as you will,
-the line I wrote about listening and connecting with others who don’t agree with you unless they’re literally a nazi/terrorist seems like a slippery slope, like yeah anyone unless they are crazy and too far gone, like where do you draw the line, what about people who are seemingly bigoted or anti man?
(Bad transition:)
BUT and this is a Big But.
Kanye is really starting to scare me... 🤔😳
thanks sm for making this video!
If someone goes to a maga party it DOES reflect on their views. Clearly they decided that oppression is acceptable when it's not them.
There's a reason why Snow White is H*tler's favorite cartoon movie
Hirohito loved Disney as well. Mickey Mouse specifically. That literally doesn't mean anything because the vast majority of people who watched Snow White and Mickey Mouse loved them. Kim-il-sung loved Godzilla and Toho kaiju movies to the point that he kidnapped a director and his wife and made him make a kaiju propaganda film for N. Korea(Pulgasari). That's not Godzilla's fault. In fact, Godzilla opposes everything that the North Korean regime stands for.
Thank you for talking about a big problem.
YOUR COMMERCIAL INTERLUDES ARE SO AMAZING LIKE THEY BRING ME CONFORT ALSO WHAT SONG WAS USED IN THE BOOK COMMERCIAL

…unfortunately 🤦🏽♂️😞
(Also, you should make a video series about trash fandoms)
Playing persona 4 and am disgusted by the blatant and unrepentant anti semitism reflected in the persona designs. Didn’t notice it in p5, but 4? I want to GAG. Eeew.
Really? Can you give me examples? I'm not trying to argue, I want to know.
As someone who wants to create in the future I will keep these things in mind.
thanks so much for this video!
tysm fo using your platform to call this shit out, it really is horribally normalised
Continue to drag Dr. Seuss 🗣️🙌🏾
Euuugh I didn't even know about the owl house concept art, that's so nasty.
Donna Murphy is so sassy.
3:33 Balenciaga is also a flop 👎
One thing that rubs me the wrong way is taking one of Fabien's artworks and saying "This was Eda's original form". Characters can go through hundreds of iterations. The way you said it makes it sound like first Eda was this racist caricature, but then she was a human, which sounds so much worse than saying one of the artworks from one of the concept artists is this abomination. Fandom has such a habit of not understanding how concept art or the creative process works. And now it looks like I am defending antisemitism... great.
Cause you are. Shut up and listen to Jews.
This creature "Jewish bird" is actually a harpy with the face of Baba Yaga (Creatures from Slavic myths), at least as far as I understand the appearance and mythology of the Slavs :V
Although from the perspective of people from the USA and it is known what happened in my country (Poland), this look and face are not very well associated
Seriously, the context of mythology was not about slandering the Jews (Because the Slavs were pagans and the Christians stuck and you know what happened over the years), baba yaga got hit the hardest because they changed her to an evil witch (yes, the image of witches in pop culture is actually a modified baba jaga), while there is her cousin (From Kashubian mythology), who also has a brother (He performs a somewhat similar function to Leszyn), unfortunately, the downside is that the image of baba yaga is used as an attack on Jews (Disney) and it hurts so much, because even a character from this mythology does not deserve to be become anti-Jewish (Because, as I mentioned, Slavic mythology had little to do with attacks on Jews,
at least as far as i know)
Disney, thank you so much for destroying the mythology of the areas where I was born to promote anti-group...
Also, Hey Alma might not always have the best takes tho, a while ago they platformed a non jewish person who said she can be jewish without formally converting or even believing in god through the ways if judaism so be cautious😅
Judaism is an ethno-religion.
Living as a jew, maintaining my connection to my tribe is importent and meaningful and not a costume you put on to feel whimsical.
HOWEVER, it is definitely problematic she wanted to just “be a Jew” without converting. Wish people realised the community is a lot more work than just “I wanna be Jewish teehee”
@@FlyFox_Artactually, yes, I am Jewish, and I am discussing members of MY community.
@@FlyFox_Artalso, shared history has nothing to do with how observant you are and whether or not you believe in God. And the Indigenous comparison holds no water because Jews are a diasporic people that exist all over the world.
hi, fellow white person here, and while I don't agree with everything you say on your channel, I do appreciate you for talking about issues with cartoons and the entertainment industry that no one else seems to talk about; as a fellow trans queer person and cartoon enthusiast, I notice some casual homophobia and transphobia in a lot of cartoons, (granted most of it being from older cartoons but that doesn't magically mean it was ever ok ) and no one ever seems to talk about it, so its great that we have a member of the community who's not afraid to talk about certain things because its so common for others in the toon community to silence others who bring up stuff like this, keep it up!
I'm about done with disney anyway, if elemental is good though I may change my mind about them. But all and all I'm just not liking disney right now.
What did they do to h
Do you know any good Jewish video essayists on UA-cam. It's been hard finding some recently.
Goddamn I have tried to link this post to a so-called Walt Disney researcher/fanboy who insists Walt was a "great man". Seems UA-cam don't like posting links even when its on the same damned site.
oh that's on me i have links blocked on my comment section! ill go approve it.
@@harriyanna Lol thanks I really want to shut this idiot up once and for all.
As a Russian Jewish trans man, thank you for making this, Harriyanna (and thank you for the work you do on your platform, I look forward to listening to more of your videos)

circumstantial
@@molls127 they’re quoted saying that
@@mv9653 israel is far from the only example, we have been overthrowing democratically elected governments to our south for generations. We are also responsible for the Taliban and Iran's theocratic dictatorship as well, though more people are familiar with those examples. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to learn we were involved with the illegal dissolution of the USSR.
Wait, they were jewish? I feel stupid cuz I never knew

i think it's nuts that even with all their literal n*zi history, disney channel has more jewish representation than most children's media (save for pbs kids). although since ariel martin, jason maybaum, milo manheim, and ava kolker (disney's recent jewish stars) haven't been in disney stuff lately it has kind of stopped. the bar/bat mitzvah episodes in the last few years were really special but i still need my jewish main character!!! cmon. also yes heyalma is so good!!! kveller as well, but that's actually a parenting site i'm pretty sure? idk.
