  • This is the LS 5.3 swap into my '87 Chevy truck over a weekend shown in time-lapse. I drove the truck home one Friday and started pulling the engine. Friends showed up and helped me knock it out. By Monday we had the swap completed and just had the bugs to work out over the next week. I'm daily driving it now and learning to tune on it. Once I get it tuned well I will have a dyno video up.
    This video doesnt have a lot of detail in it. Just a fun over view of the process.

      Jermaine Flowers Good question. I've got to get back on it hard next month. I've got to get it finished before September so that we have all the bugs worked out in time to drive it to LS Fest this year. So you'll be seeing more on it soon.
      Harness is mostly done on it and we even fired it up off of an external fuel source. We're probably going to have to replace the stock plastic fuel lines that came on that car though and find out whats wrong with the fuel pump.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  10 років тому

      Thank you spoogethat! The wiring isn't that bad, its just time consuming. I sat here and tried to think about what part was the hardest part and my conclusion was that I wouldn't call any of it real hard, just time consuming. But if I had to pick one part, I guess I would pick the wiring to be the hardest part because of how much time it takes.

    Hey did you say in a previous video that you can flash the ecm for a ls1 and swap it without having to delete wires from the harness? If so could you explain this a little more, I couldn't find the video where you were talking about it. Thanks for all the videos that help me alot. I'm currently swaping a 5.3 into an 1965 buick wildcat.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  10 років тому

      Hey Kaylan! Yep, you don't ever have to delete any wires from the harness. That is only done to help it look better. I don't usually do that. I just give power to the harness and have the VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft) system turned off in the PCM. Then it'll run and drive.
      You use LT1swap.com for the wiring diagram of where to give the harness power and you can use "CoolMike222" on ebay to flash your PCM.
      Here is a video that shows exactly what I explained running on a stand.

      Thank you Josh! Glad to hear I could help man. I'd recommend checking out the "Dirty Dingo" swap mounts. Since they're adjustable, it makes it much easier by eliminating possibly headaches from the engine now being where you want it. Also check out "Tejas Steelworks". they've got a different and interesting way to swapping these trucks too.

    Do you use the stock driveshaft from your c10 with the new gen motor/trans?
    I’m picking up a junk yard LS/auto trans next week but am trying to figure out if the factory 85 shaft will fit with the new motor/trans.
    Or if I could just use the beefier 2003 driveshaft from the donor truck and it bolt my factory 85 year end after a cut/balance.

      Does it have spark at the spark plug? Take a plug out of the head and ground it to the block or frame with the plug wire still connected. Crank the engine over to see if the plug sparks. If not, check your grounds on the back of the head and side of the block.

      Thanks GoodFellaAtxSS44! I haven't got an amount that I put into this swap, since I spent about a year hunting and collecting parts before the swap. I'll need to add it up one day though. The cost of a LSx swap can vary greatly depending on choices made, goal of the vehicle and patience. But an average swap usually costs about $2500 in parts.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  9 років тому

      Harness is $100 and PCM is $40. You do the wiring yourself using LT1swap.com for diagrams. Done. If you want you don't even have to strip the harness down like everyone says. All you have to do is give the harness power. I've got videos showing that, but I still need to make a video that focuses specifically on this in more detail. Check this video out and read the description. ITs with an ummodified truck harness. I just gave it power. At the end you can see me removing the two power wires.

    Love your truck! I've probably watched all of your postings. Have a question I have a 95 suburban k1500 I'm doing an ls1 swap. I want to put aftermarket headers. what do you recommend ? I have a dual Flowmaster straight pipe running of the stock 350 with aftermarket headers now. so I want to keep that setup except I know the headers are going to be different just don't know what I should go with. Thanks and keep up the great work.

    mark question how would u wire in the alternator i have 65 impala i did my harness and have a blue wire from alternator i was going to use for amp gauge the connector plugged in to ecu and i used the + from my old alternator that leads to junction block and doesnt charge any ideas

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      I just let the PCM excite my alternator as it did from the factory. Sounds like your wire to the exciter terminal may not be getting power as it should. You'll need to test the terminals on the alternator to see if the right one is hot when it should be. If not, reference the wiring diagram to see where that wire should be and make sure that it's in place.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 років тому

      or you just have a bad alternator. lol Check the power on the alt plug first though. You can even jump power to the exciter terminal on the alt to make the alt charge, but it said to be bad to leave it that way. Something about not using 12v to excite the alt and only using ~5v, like the PCM gives it. So people who just run their own wire to excite the alt, will use a resistor on that power wire to lower it's voltage.

    Hey man you do some cool videos! I am a fan, i was wondering if you used the stock fuel pumps in the tanks of the truck? i have an 1984 c10 and thought of converting to EFI or maybe an ls one day and was curious if the stock 87 TBI pump would be good enough for the swap? I ran a tune port injected pump in my 69' c10 lq4 swap.

      Guy Taylor Thank you Guy! I usually use a Walbro 255 pump. This truck I used the '87 tank and sending unit, but with a high pressure fuel pump, like the walbro 255. You can get them for just under $100. But you could use a pump for a LT1 or LS1 car too if you wanted. I'd pick one that was made for an engine that used ~60psi.

I'M MEASURING 12.66V TO THE FUSE BLOCK UNDER THE DASH AND THE JUNCTION BLOCK ON THE FIREWALL AND THE STARTER AND ALTERNATOR AND MY NEW FUSE BLOCK WITH THE PSI STAND ALONE HARNESS. HEADLIGHTS, STARTER NOT DOING ANYTHING, I HAD THE 305 TBI MOTOR IN THE TRUCK ORIGINALLY CUT A LOT OF THE UNNECESSARY WIRES OUT MAYBE THIS IS WHERE I DID SOMETHING WRONG. • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  8 років тому

      Hey Nic! Yea, your head lights and all interior power should come from the same source, I believe. Usually there's one wire under the hood that your provide power to and it powers up the cab. The headlight harness is all separate from the engine harness and I believe runs along the driver's fender. But if you have power in the cab, your lights should work too.

Find out what the length of the driveshaft is in a truck like your that came with a 700r4 trans. That should be the same length DS you need as long as you placed the engine in the same right position. One inch set back swap plates usually put it there or use Dirty Dingo adjustable mounts.

    How does the bulkhead get connected to the harness for all your in car stuff like controls and gauges ?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  5 років тому +1

      quan nguyen There’s no controls that I can think of that you need to connect on the body harness (aka bulkhead connector). They’re be a couple that you use, like the large main ignition wire. Run that one to power the whole LS Engine harness. Wire for oil pressure will go to the oil pressure sending unit on the engine. Not much to it. If you’re attempting to make all of your gauges work, that is too long of a subject to be able to type here. That’s why I made the “LSx Swap Gauge” video.

Looks like theres only a few wires that are needed, but I'm also reading you can delete a couple of those. What all is necessary to run a t56 wiring-wise?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  10 років тому

      For the most part, 4.8s have flat top pistons and 5.3 have dished pistons. So take a spark plug out, get piston close to TDC and then stick a small flat head screw driver in the spark plug hole to feel for the lip of a dished piston. Look at pics of the dish pistons so that you know what you're feeling for. If its dished its a 5.3. Unless you've found a rare L33 5.3 that comes with flat tops. Good luck!

      Power steering hooks right up. For AC there are many options. The easiest and cheapest is to run the old AC compressor that came on the truck. Especially if its still working. There are a couple options for mounting that compressor on these motors. The budget way is to use a mounting bracket from a certain TBI truck of the 90s. Julien Bernal Well I've found it hard to give tips through text. The only think I know is to find the wiring diagrams and study them. I havent swapped a Vortec 5.7, so I'm not familiar with it, but should be pretty close to the same as a LS swap. LT1swapDOTcom problaby has the diagrams for you. You'll probably need to get the VATS dissabled in the PCM too.

      Jimbo Jerry I alwasy use jack stands and also test the vehicle before working on stands. I dont even let people work around me without jack stands. Glad to hear that he is ok.
