A modern building with fire supression systems and procedures should never have a fire spread that quickly. Something is fishy here.

Walmart is the ruling class. They are always up to corruption. Add to that, look at the color of the smoke. It's toxic plastic/oil smoke.

If I had to guess. I'd say electrical fire. Not much a sprinkler can do when they are below the fire.
But even aside from that. We are talking about a tar roof and paints that are more often than not, incredibly flammable. By the time a fire suppression system got activated, the fire would already make it past the suppression systems, getting to the tar roofs.
Also, I worked in a Walmart deli. Sometimes things got smokey in there. If the sprinklers had that kind of tolerance, a fire could become pretty unmanageable before it got triggered. But the question is, would it be too unmanageable for the suppression system?
I also don't know if they were tuned any differently compared to the rest of the store. And I wouldn't have hesitated to pull the button if a fire occurred near the oil.
But one event scared the shit out of me. Our used oil carriage sprung a leak and we didn't realize until after the return trip. So over 100 ft of oil was dripped across the store. This would obviously take time for 3 people to clean up and over a dozen wet floor signs. So I was trying to get ahold of a manager, and they never showed up. A hour later we had it cleaned up and luckily nobody slipped despite us only having access to 4 wet floor signs. - I wonder if anyone tried contacting a manager concerning this fire, and failed to get their attention.

I can say that as a retired building inspector I find it very unusual the fire got out of control so rapidly. This type of building occupancy S-1 requires sprinklers. Something is just not right in this fire. Sprinklers turned off? Didn't want to pay for the water service to feed the system. Yes, those systems are expensive to support. So is the damage and worse yet the possible loss of life that can't be measured. 🤔

CORRUPTION AT ITS FINEST. Somehow, this building met all fire codes. This could have been a mass casualty incident very easily. Someone or multiple people were obviously paid off to look the other way in regards to fire inspections and whoever is in charge of building permits. The local fire inspector and whoever is in charge of building permits when this was built should be fired and investigated. It is absolutely ridiculous that a fire from that warehouse got so big, it literally tapped the box in the entire county and called for mutual aid in neighboring counties. As someone who has worked in fire inspections, this is an obvious lack of or inadequate fire suppression system for the size of this building. If it was adequate and working properly, the zone the fire started in would have put the fire out.

I work at the DC in illinois, and it strikes me odd that it appears none of the built in firewalls did their job. Were they not closed? Was the wind really that crazy today? The loud explosions could very well be from the aerosol room. It is usually kept separate from the rest of the building, with its own firewall. If the fire were to have started in a central location, it would spread very rapidly as that is where most of our backstock merchandise is stored. (in our dc anyway)....just found out this is a return/damage facility so their layout is obviously different, but between firewalls, sprinklers, and protocols it should have not been this crazy. I curiously await the cause and the reason it spread so fast.

WTHR, great news coverage! From Plymouth, MA, thank you WTHR for sharing this information in such a way, and do such, with much journalistic professionalism. Also, to those that work at the Plainville, Indiana D.C., I'm very happy to know that, from what I'm told at this point, that ALL are accounted for. I hope that is true. I'm sure your Walmart family members around the company are following this, and care about all of you.
This is a devastating event for Walmart, and those associates that work there, and those associates that work in the stores nearby, and around our company. The impact will affect many, including the associates, and the stores, and its customers in the coming weeks and months ahead.
From my personal view as an associate myself, I'm sure that our company thanks ALL emergency responders, INCLUDING those behind the scenes, and those that follow up with this investigation, for their tireless effort to deal with this tragedy, and to aid in further ways to prevent such, from occurring in the future.

I'll tell you this. Walmart is a very clean operation. But, and I warn people about this. As a Cherry Picker operator when people pull the cartons and place the labels on the cartons they leave behind the backing of the labels their going to attach to a carton or cartons in the racks they leave the backs of the the labels in the racks. And they build up. When a fire breaks out those label backs catch fire because the label backs are non-stick and rise into the air on fire and land on another rack and start another fire to break out. Over and over like burning a pile of dry leaves.
