  • A water pump has many uses. But did you know that it can also be used to help octopuses shed the skin on their suckers? Neither did we! What started out as free massage turned into a full blown exfoliating session.
    In today's episode of Octopus Reacts, we placed a water pump in the experiment tank. We opted for a 0.5 HP pump. Enough pressure to get Albert's attention without stressing him. We were all smiles when we noticed he was using the pump to help rid himself of the dead skin on his suckers. There's never a dull day when you get to spend time with these eight armed wonders.

    Aaawww Albert went to the spa!! 🐙🚿
    I never knew their suckers shed skin. I’ve seen enrichment videos where someone will take a sprinkling can and sprinkle water over the surface and the octopus goes to the surface and turns himself upside down so his suckers get a shower.

    I wonder how he would react to an air pocket that allowed him to exit the water? You know how zoos sometimes have those bubbles where kids can pop up in the center of an animal exhibit? Something dome shaped like that where Albert could pop up out of the water and into an air pocket.

    Having worked with marine mammals in my early career, I’ve seen bottlenose dolphin use a running water faucet, (keeping the tank at constant volume), to do things to itself that isn’t really safe for work viewing, if you know what I mean. I was stunned when I learned what they (yes, they (when one figured it out she just had to share)). The other trainers and I were hysterically laughing when we figured out what they were doing.
    Anyway, I commented here because I’m so impressed with just how resourceful and clever these highly intelligent organisms are.
    (And yes, I’m well aware that 🐙 are not marine mammals) just had to share.
    Love the vids. Thank you OctoLab!!

    Do you have any experience with the mimic octopus? I was fascinated by cuttlefish when I first encountered them whilst diving, but from what little I know about the mimic octopus it's on another level - obviously it has the chromatophores and dexterity, but the intelligence, memory and capacity to learn are incredible!

    He seems to enjoy it. Love the humor of your group of researchers. The little signs are cute. What size are the tanks you use for these experiments and what are sizes of octopus? I’m very new to them and know little nor can identify them. Do you use different types of octopus? Have you noticed one group is smarter over the other?

    It's my understanding that octopuses have a distributed nervous system. How coordinated, then, are the eight limbs? More specifically, is there any way in which the arms can have individual "personalities", distinct from the others? For example, can one of an octopus's arms be more playful or curious than the others? Or are the limbs too coordinated for separate personalities to be possible or, at least, noticeable?

    • @LittleKitty22
      @LittleKitty22 3 роки тому

      A very interesting question. From what I know, each arm has its own brain. They also seem to live on if they get seperated from the octopus and even still try to catch food, though the octopus can regenerate lost arms. And I've heard a story, not sure if it's true, where someone killed an octopus and the arms then found the person on the beach and suffocated them. And apparently the only reason an octopus doesn't suffer from arms that get knotted into each other is because they somehow repel each other.

    fascinating. Do octopi have a "preferred" arm that they tend to sense with first? If so, does it vary between individuals, or is there a primary arm that is universal?

    I love octopuses and would love to watch this video. But . As we prob all know octopus do not do well on captivity and this channel clearly is monetized and lives off of the views it gets.
    There isnt really a good way for us to see if these octopuses are well cared of.
