Octopus VS Unsolvable Puzzle - Behavior Observation Experiment

  • We've all watched in awe as these intelligent invertebrates solved puzzle after puzzle. We're always surprised at how effortlessly they solve almost every challenge we put in from of them. But what if we set up a challenge that is impossible to solve? How will our octopus react to an unsolvable puzzle?
    We took some crabs and sealed them in a plexiglass box. We made sure that Michael, our big powerful octopus, would not be able to open the plexiglass container no matter how much force he applied.
    We ran this observational experiment for nearly an hour before we gave him his treat. The final 15 minutes were entirely uneventful. Our octopus ignored the box with the crabs after having failed to open it during the first 45 minutes. We wondered if he would also ignore the second box that contained his treat due to the fact that he was unable to open the box with the crabs. He didn't.

    I want to know wether the octopus understand bouyancy and gravity and have an idea for an experiment:
    Take a transparent cylinder, with a hole in the side of it. at the bottom of the cylinder there is floating balls that fit through the hole, on top of them there is a sinking plate, as wide as the inside diametre of the cylinder. On top of the plate is a treat. The octopus mus take the balls out to make the plate sink in order to get to the treat. another idea is to design an expreiment to see if th octopus can balance a scale with weights and/or floats.

    Since an Octopus's brain is in its arms, Do you think those 8 arms have 8 different personalities? Like, is one the leader? Might 1 be more scared? Hesitant? Curious? Impatient? Angry? Psychologically scarred from a previous bad experience?
    However you look at things, though, those crabs are going to be suffering from PTSD!

    • @TheBestofJuan
      @TheBestofJuan 3 роки тому +7

      2/3 of his neurons lie in his arms but they also has brains as well in their heads. However you're right that each leg essentially all think separately. I don't think each leg has emotional feelings independentally from on another, they all just feel the environment to help the octopus's decision making. I could be wrong tho

    • @lawrence18uk
      @lawrence18uk 3 роки тому +4

      @@TheBestofJuan would be fascinating to try to see whether each arm had its own psychological history... but maybe the arms have no memory. What set me off was wondering what a 'brain' of a re-grown arm might do...

    • @milkyway3455
      @milkyway3455 3 роки тому +3

      They might just be like the nervous system in the human body, all communicating in some point (if I’m not wrong that would be the actual brain) so the hole system functions together. In that case I don’t think they would have different personalities in they arms, but may be they have.

    it would be interesting giving him an EVENTUALLY solvable puzzle.. like, how much patience do other beings tend to have...?
    Just incidentally (if this is interesting to anyone), i notice with myself that my approach is EXTREMELY dependent on how I feel (unfortunately)... Wven if i am tough enough to ENDURE circumstances, the point is that I tend to not take the initiative when i'm not feeling super well for some reason.
    I took 2 (excruciating) WJ3 iq tests when I was younger. One was when i was off of all medication and one was when I was on Adderall. There was almost a 20 point difference. I kept asking myself why.
    Contrary to more popular theories as to how such meds work (direct activation of prefrontal cortex), this was when I discovered that my desire to even approach prolonged functional analysis was dramatically affected by how good I felt (ie, yes, the prefrontal cortex would be more activated, but only because it was a natural consequence of my own functioning during times I felt more apt to engage).
    Point: Give me something that curbs my tendency towards (focusing on?) discomfort and negativity and I can emjoy engaging and troubleshooting, etc. Otherwise, I'm essentially always seeking to end the pain of living all the time, which cuts potential paths.
