Sam & Josh might have names that are well-known to political junkies, but none of them have particularly famous faces... except for Zoe (which the script dealt with by having her say "You're kidding, right?") and except for CJ the Press Secretary. So because the screenplay required it, CJ was kept out of the scene until the last minute. In reality, two adult women in a crowded bar with a 19 year-old? Unless they were completely ditzy, they would have absolutely kept Zoe in their line of sight the whole time. Not saying the men wouldn't also have done so, but women definitely cover each other's backs in that kind of situation. Anyway, it wasn't the first time in Season 1 that CJ's intelligence was demeaned for script purposes. I especially enjoyed episode 1.6, where the script needed to explain the US Census to the audience, so Sorkin chose the character who's a supposed expert in polling modeling with a masters from Berkeley as the person who didn't know anything about it and picked the corporate M&A lawyer as the person to explain it to her, instead of the other way around.

As long as the president is in office his daugther would NOT be in a bar by herself. I remember that Michelle Obama said that the daughters were not allowed to enter any car that was not driven by the Secret service. I guess the parents and teachers at the private school had been checked out. Michelle said their friends could hop into their car (Motorcade ?) Also Obama was not allowed to drive while he was the president. Always driven by the Secret Service.

I had worked in the area of UPENN for 12 years. Ive encountered college students (not even in bars) that because they are 21+ (not having mom & dad to answer to) they do have NO ONE to answer to (police, teachers, etc). They above the law so act, talk and take as they please.
LOVE when Josh tells the president something to the effect of "not for nothing, but Charlie didn't hesitate for a second before putting himself between danger and Zoe".

This scene is both a masterclass in how different characters must have distinctly different voices and a cautionary tale of how very, very serious it is to cross the extremely powerful. In real life, those three young men’s futures just nosedived. Possibly even cratered.
I get why the panic button was pushed, but it always annoyed me. The guys get to save Zooey and get back at and laugh at the college guys. But Zooeys whole night was ruined. She has to go back to the White House while everyone else gets to hang out. I mean, she shouldn’t have been at a bar, but couldn’t they have dealt with this another way?
@daffodil852 maybe if they hadn't deal with it that exact way and Zoey was in some kind of danger, there would be much more severe consequences for all of them than a ruined evening. So they left the job to the people who are meant to do it. I love how calm they are. It shows that dealing with jerks is a kind of routine task for them, either professionally, or recreationally.

And when notes she is danger jumps to action. Her three defenders and their mindsets is just awesome Charlie is the street wise knight looking out for Zoe. First to realize the danger and knows to place himself in their way. Second to notice was Sam a genius jack of all trade studiyng his surroundings navigates by stars he is aware of his surroundings and realized the danger At this point the ruthless stratetic/tactical general is also going to charge in but turns around to grab their best weapon.
Here is the problem, we are not producing writers like Sorkin. We are not producing graduates from university who are truly educated. what they are now is young people who could afford the tuition and brain less. Today's presidents of University have no business being there! They are not knowledgeable about anything! They got there because of the wrong reasons. Do you want things to get better? Make sure the people educating today deserve that job. I don't care where they are from as long as they understand that there job is the hardest and most important job anyone could have. They must have a clear vision of what education is!!

Everytime I see this, I'm amazed. The things people can remember about characters in movies & actors entire lives and it just never stops with some of them. I have met some that were truly incredible in thier knowledge. I keep thinking, wow, they must spend all thier time doing this to know all these facts and interwoven characters. There have been a few that just never stopped linking everything together endlessly. I could only sit there and listen. Amazed and stunned that anyone would or could collect all these bits of knowledge. Movie & music lore affecinadoes definitely.

Yes, it's setting up the scene. To where they can come back and kick the doors in. But there is no way in hell the President's daughter leaves her panic button behind. Ever. And that goes double for when you are walking up to a bar filled with strangers. "Ruins the line of my outfit" No way. Ever. For the record. 2:50 is where they screwed up. Literally blocking her in and preventing Zoey from walking away. When she had more than a few chances to do so. They still didn't let her. Which means they deserved everything they got. This episode is foreshadowing to when she gets kidnapped. The very first thing they showed after the Secret Service agent (Molly) that got shot, was her panic button on the ground.
I can't imagine the secret service not having 2-3 agents inside with eyes on Zoey. Later, when she gets kidnapped, there should have been the same inside and out. I've never seen just one secret service agent in any situation. Otherwise, I love this scene though.
there were several secret agents inside they just didn't have the bathroom area (down the hall) under security. They did have some outside the back door but the agent was killed. That whole episode still stands out in my mind and it has been a long time since I saw it.
Fun scene, but I had a couple of issues with this.. .first, wouldn't the SS be in the bar with them, within sight of Zoe? And after Josh presses the panic button, the agents just kinda stroll into the bar instead of rushing in like it was an emergency?
They would but "plot reasoning". In reality the USSS are some of the only people that can tell the president and his family "no" if it interferes with their job of protecting them. They may try and be subtle about it but in no way would they take their eyes off of a member of the first family, especially in a highly charged environment like a bar where people haven't been screened for weapons.

I can't imagine the secret service not having 2-3 agents inside with eyes on Zoey. Later, when she gets kidnapped, there should have been the same inside and out. I've never seen just one secret service agent in any situation. Otherwise, I love this scene though.
there were several secret agents inside they just didn't have the bathroom area (down the hall) under security. They did have some outside the back door but the agent was killed. That whole episode still stands out in my mind and it has been a long time since I saw it.
Fun scene, but I had a couple of issues with this.. .first, wouldn't the SS be in the bar with them, within sight of Zoe? And after Josh presses the panic button, the agents just kinda stroll into the bar instead of rushing in like it was an emergency?
They would but "plot reasoning". In reality the USSS are some of the only people that can tell the president and his family "no" if it interferes with their job of protecting them. They may try and be subtle about it but in no way would they take their eyes off of a member of the first family, especially in a highly charged environment like a bar where people haven't been screened for weapons.
